2. Introduction
Just like a product is produced with the main
aim of being consumed the same way a film is
made with the aim of being watched. A
successful film does not only rely on the
direction, the script the acting. A lot of the
film's success depends on the distributors.
3. Research and Decision
Choosing a distributor was a difficult task. I
researched on a lot of large and small
distributors and in the end came to the
conclusion that I wanted Universal Studios to
be my film's distributor. I wanted this for
many reasons.
4. Reasons
Firstly, Universal are interested in films of all
genre comedy, romantic, action and etc.
Therefore my genre of my film
(thriller/horror) will also be of interest to
Universal Studios. Since Universal accepts
almost all of the main stream genres, it is
very helpful for the producers.
5. Reasons
Secondly, they distribute both high budget and
low budget films. It's a positive point for me
since my film is categorized as a low budget film.
Furthermore a big name such as Universal
Studios also will help me attract audiences.
Universal Studios has distributed films such as
Les Miserables to films such as Kick Ass.
Obviously they like to diversify into different
markets of Hollywood. This is they type of
Ideology which will encourage Universal to work
with my project. Since, it's a low budget film so
the risk involved is less since the distribution will
be rather limited.
6. Reasons
Moreover, my film belongs to a niche market.
Even though this genre is used again and
again but films with similar treatments are
only a few such as I am Legend or 28 days
later. So a limited supply of such kind of films
guarantee that the audience will be getting
something different in the cinema.This
theory helps in attracting the audience. The
success of the sequels 28 days later and 28
weeks later is a proof of this ideology.
7. Logos
I used Universal Studio's logo at the start of
my film but with the sole purpose of giving
credit to the distributor. However the main
producer rights were reserved with my
production house 'Megamind Productions', a
special logo was designed for this company.
9. Production, Distribution and
Exhibition
It should be understood that the cost of
distributing a movie (especially worldwide) is
equal to the cost of production it. So 'The
Knock' being a low budget film obviously
cannot see a world wide release. Also because
the film lacks the elements of stardom, the
distributor will also be a bit hesitant in a large
scale release.Therefore after huge research
there were some cost effective ways of
distribution which I came across.
10. Production, Distribution and
Exhibition
Firstly, to show in cinemas the film can be copied
on to a hardrive. Originally the films are turned
into reels and shown in cinemas but its an
expensive process and the reels are not re
usable. However using a hardrive ensures cost
effectiveness plus the same product can be re
used. This approach is in practiced by small
British production houses such as Warp X.
Secondly, if the funds are really limited one can
always go with a direct to DVD release. However
research shows such type of an approach
hampers the success of a film.
11. Production, Distribution and
Exhibition
Furthermore with the new media age it is very
possible to launch films online for a fraction of
the cost through companies such as iTunes,
Netflex and etc. This makes the audience more
mobile and they can easily purchase the desired
film with a click of a button. Similarly films can
be shown through the latest satellites. This
options makes it easy for the customer to
consume but the absence of the cinema and it's
feel might influence the response of the
audience.
12. Conclusion
This clearly shows you the reasons for
choosing Universal Studios as the distributor
for my film 'The Knock'.
