Cisco is in a pivotal position as a leader in
data routing and application filtering (QoS)
Cisco has lead and introduced many
standards and protocols for data flow, QoS
measurement and Device Management
(NetFlow)
Cisco is on its way to include Application
Intelligence on the Routers to make them
more intelligent and adaptive (AON)

SkandSoft
SkandSoft’s Setu is a comprehensive AIDC
middleware with a solution development suite.
Setu covers the entire life cycle of data –
devices-data acquisition-filtering-routing-
feedback-Ent Apps.
Setu has distributed, Client-Server architecture
with intelligence spread between the Clients
and the Server

RFID data are high volume, unstructured,
asynchronous and non-contextual
This is true for data from other AIDC sources – Wi-Fi,
WiMax, ZigBee etc.,
RFID is an excuse to strengthen Cisco’s pivotal
position in data routing and filtering and consolidate
data AFM (Acquisition, Filtering and Routing)
domain for all AIDC technologies
Setu can offer multiple ways to move towards
Cisco’s App Intelligence objective, among other
things
5. - 5 -
Setu - Middleware that has selective event
filtering, event routing and business contexting
capabilities
Some of these features complement and can
fit with Cisco’s RFID/Application Intelligence
Strategy
Light-weight Setu Clients can be loaded onto
Cisco Routers with the functionalities
mentioned above.

Recent Additions to Setu
• Light-weight version on WAS-CE – can be
deployed on devices like routers – porting
fully supported by IBM
• GSM, GPS and UWB technologies
• Compliance with EPC RP1.0, TDS 1.1Rev28,
ALE1.0, EPC IS1.0
We look at the following specific areas
having promising synergy:

Setu-Cisco Routers
1. Build Application Intelligence on the Routers
This goes far ahead of the QoS intelligence currently there on Cisco
routers. Falls in line with current Application-Intelligence-on-Routers.
Setu, being open source, distributed and having the capabilities
mentioned above, can be used for infusing RFID application
intelligence on the Routers. Setu Clients can be loaded onto the
Routers as the foot print is also low. Any RFID Device in a given LAN
can be controlled, configured, monitored and managed from this
intelligent router. All functionalities of Setu can be part of the App
Intelligence
Setu is technology, vendor, protocol and frequency neutral- offering
high scalability.
This can complement Cisco’s AON approach.

2. Routers can be used for routing the events post
selective filtering., Based on the outcome after selective
filtering by applying business context, each stream of
processed data would need to be sent to different data
consumers like BI suites, ERPs, MES etc., This routing
can also be done by the Routers.
3. Device Monitoring and management modules -
architected to cover all wireless devices (based on SNMP,
Netflow and SLRRP) can reside on Cisco IOS to
transparently carry on monitoring and management
without additional tools. This is critical as the technology
is not yet mature and monitoring and tracking devices’
working status is important to make business decisions
based on data collected through such devices.

Setu’s uniquities - Features
Zero-code business process
• Confirms to W3C standards (van der aalst, BPEL and XML) unlike GlobeRanger(windows
based work-flow), OAT(rfXML – proprietary), Connecterra(only definition, no Execution)
Addresses all industry vertical
• Unlike OAT (retail oriented), GlobeRanger and Connecterra (both supply chain specific pre-
defined business steps)
Addresses various end-user profiles – manufacturer, reseller etc
• Hierarchy is present in GR and Connecterra but not Follow-Order. OAT has neither.
Handles data from other AIDC technologies – GPS,GSM,UWB. ZigBee and Wi-
Fi by Jul’06
• GR supports GSM. None have RTLS.
Complies with all ratified standards of EPC
• Not just with ALE events (as in Connecterra) but the complete cycle of RP1.0, ALE 1.0 and
EPCIS 1.0, along with TDS 1.1.
• Setu is the ONLY platform that can support non-RP (ALL existing readers in the market) on
RP 1.0

Setu’s uniquities - Other
Modular – can mix and match various modules – Device
Management, Data Capture, Data Management, Filtering,
Business Process, Feedback
Distributed – can be deployed across LAN/WAN. Setu
WASCE client that share server load, can be loaded onto
remote devices.
Custom requirements can be accommodated with rapid
development cycle
Strong development capabilities, coupled with modular,
layered, distributed and extensible architecture of Setu
enable us to accommodate new Data Capture
technologies quickly
