3. I. Introduction
Objective
Design an intelligent garbage collection service that
allows the correct use and recycling of these
elements, by creating a comprehensive solution.
Scope
The scope of the project is limited to the stages of
analysis and design, but an extensive study of the
factors involved in the entire service design is
required, detailing the operation of the critical
processes, the design of the mobile platform, the
design of The collection itself and the specific tools
required to achieve a service that can be scalable
and that provides detailed information on the
process of garbage collection from the homes until it
reaches the recycling companies.
5. II. Identification of need
Customer Identification
Many principal actors has been recognized in this project in different social, public and private
sector entities on the environment care; the municipality of Aguascalientes is defined like public
entity, some organization whose function is recycling are defined inside private sector and finally
in the social sector are defined the business and homes that use recollection service the recycling
materials and waste.
The project analysis consider the recollection services publics and privates, nevertheless, the aim of
this project is based on private service where the principal customer is the industrial and the
principal actors defined who are related on garbage recycling, on the one hand generators of
garbage for ordinary consumption, on the other hand, organism and people who recollect
garbage and finally recycling companies and/or consumers (recyclers)
Decision of Need
The team applied surveys on several ways, the society´a survey was applied in digital way, thinking
about this communication media to look the use of the people of digitals ways. Secondly the
companies interviews was realized via call and video call and have conversational interaction
about many points of the theme. the government interview was attended by a consulting person
who has the knowledge and interaction about that agencies are doing.
The outcome of customer identification give to the team the real need about the recollection of
garbage is the recycling as well as the origin of the issue starts in the homes and certainly the
governmental authorities tried to implement programs with unsuccess and the efforts culture
environment are complete null, and we found that the recollection of waste in the industrial
branch is almost covered and exist several private companies that work with them, and many
exports to other countries the material recycle.
6. II. Identification of need
Consensus of needs
Government
Collection programs: It is necessary to improve current collection programs that are insufficient to
cover the current collection demand in which the routes don’t cover one hundred percent of
assigned tasks, are not respected the fixed times to deposit the waste, nonexistent a schedule
established to carry out the collection by the municipality by the secretariat of public services and
ecology.
Industry
Labor culture: Manual and route collectors need a handle culture of the waste, to achieve the
optimal conditions for the material to be recyclable can't contain other types of substances that
make it impossible to use, it is also necessary to have the necessary equipment To operate and
reduce the risks that are exposed, currently by ignorance mix the garbage inside the containers
and become a mess and perform the tasks with sticks and without protection.
Civil society
Linkage: Linking with industry and government will allow a total integration with the origin that is the
citizenship, coordination with the transport and collectors of materials will make the process be
limited and efficient, besides knowing the current programs will help the citizenship to Empathize
with practices, so that the user with the use of the application will be able to find out what
happens.
Generation and Disposition: Citizen awareness and participation in the process, should reduce the
generation of garbage and will make a better disposition of waste.
Infrastructure: Having the infrastructure, effective tools from the residences and knowledge of the
logistics due to the linkage will be able to do the tasks of separation of garbage and provision for
its collection in the appropriate times.
7. III. State of Art
Empirical Solutions
In the proposed empirical solutions, we see a tendency towards the subject of recycling and
biodegradable materials, the subject of education of people being an important and critical
point, because the success of the service project depends a lot on attitude and awareness, which
can awaken citizens. The innovation of the creation of biodegradable materials and industrial
recycling is shown as an important issue and a global trend that gradually grows and takes on the
importance it needs.
Existing Solutions
In researching existing solutions, we have found enough information, quite a few applications that
are being used to help people become aware of the importance of recycling, both for the
ecological good, and for the economic benefits that this can cause in the Industries, we see that
this culture in developed countries is very broad and that there are several mechanisms that
support it, not in developing countries like Mexico, but it is a great opportunity to start with the
service projects that help to start with this culture of recycling, which allows us to improve the
conditions of our environment and support the industry with the reuse of valuable materials.
Patents
The research of the patents surprised us positively, we have found a great number related mainly
with the biodegradable materials, as well as several patents of intelligent containers that would
help to the population to better recycle their wastes, this indicates to us that we can Have the
tools to create an effective collection and recycling service, because they are creating the tools
to be able to do it.
8. III. State of Art
Innovative Concepts
The research resulted in very good concepts, such as housing construction projects using recycled
materials, this concept seems quite innovative and important because it gives us a tangible result
of proper recycling of materials. We find several mobile applications that allow us to interact with
different recycling points that are part of a network with different locations and information that
allows the user to know in real time the points to which they must take their recyclable waste.
Another concept that was found and which we found very interesting is the eco-fashion, which
consists of using discarded clothes, to create new clothes that allow the reuse of materials.
Scientific Articles
We find a lot of scientific articles, many touch the subject of recycling services, so our project of
creating an effective waste recycling service takes on greater importance and strength, the
scientific community is very concerned and interested in creating Solutions that allow the creation
of biodegradable materials and the reuse of materials and see a great need in the future,
because many of the natural resources we have today are non-renewable, so that their
management becomes vital and it is here that Recycling culture takes a decisive value.
Comparison Matrix
The research allowed us to find several technologies that allow us to create the following
comparative table, where we can observe and analyze the main current trends, it is observed that
one of the main topics is related to the creation of new biodegradable materials and optimize the
process of recycling, in the same way the integration of applications in mobile devices is also
presented as a trend which allows us to have on hand a lot of information in real time taking
advantage of wireless technologies and GPS location. There is also a trend towards applications
oriented to ecological education and high information content of different recycling processes.
10. IV. Innovation Protocol
New Proposal for Innovation
After analyzed the state of art in the previous section, waste management has
many improvements in the different areas. It is trending topic nowadays, but it
has been splitted in many areas those were improved one by one. It was found
that there are no services that could help to see the BIG PICTURE of waste
management. A service that can identify which part of the process is not
accomplishing its goal.
Hype Cycles
Software as a Service (SAAS)
For this project is necessary to have all the information in one place, a software
that has control over the whole waste management process. It has to be easy
to access from anywhere and from different platforms. The Software as a
Service will provide the flexibility that this project needs due to it is easy to
access from different platforms and it will have update information so other
parts of the process can access it fast and easy.
11. IV. Innovation Protocol
Hype Cycles
Consumer Devices and Mobile Application
An innovative functionality in this project is the creation of a link between
people who does recycling at home and the trash trucks that pick trash up.
Knowing exactly the day and hour when the trash truck will arrive to the
neighborhood is crucial to helps people to create a recycling culture. Providing
a mobile application to people will give them the information necessary to
make the recycling task easier for them.
Internet of Things
Considering the fact to control or monitor a process that involves different
hardware devices: cell phones, trash trunk, trash containers, warehouses, etc. It
is necessary to have them connected via internet. This monitoring is happening
from in one place so it creates a warning if something is not going as planned.
It must be in real time so every device involved in the waste management
process should be connected all time.
12. IV. Innovation Protocol
Technological and Social Megatrends
Wireless Technology
Waste management involves different devices to get its job done, so each one
of them has to let know to other parts of the process who is next in this chain.
For instance, people at home needs to know where the trash truck it’s located
to know the exact time when it will arrive to a specific location, for that matter
a GPS is needed in truck. Another example is a trash container needs to let the
organization know that is full and ready to be picked up so it has to use a
satellite connection to internet or a mobile device for the same.
Eco-friendly Consumer
Nowadays people is becoming conscious of footprint on earth due to trash.
Recycling is not a new topic, it has existed since several years ago, however,
now people wants to be “smart” and have control in their own hands. Provide
information to people about how they can help during the recycling process
and have real-time information handy could make recycling more successful.
14. IV. Innovation Protocol
Top three Innovative Ideas
•Monitoring Service
•Smart Recycling
•Everything connected
Selected Designing Criteria
•Sustainability
•Social
•Manufacturability
15. IV. Innovation Protocol
Improved Ideas by Selected Designing Criteria
Having control of the waste management process leads to improve areas that could
not achieving its current goal. Expose all the process weaknesses will lead to improve
it in different areas: financially, time spans, physical resources, etc. Having this
information is the first step to Sustainability, after analyzed all the information in the
Monitoring Service, it would come with a better picture of what needs to be
improved in order to make the whole process sustainable.
Recycling culture has not been achieved in the country, many people does not
recycle the trash. Many campaigns had been created during the past years but
people still not does recycling. Nowadays people has increased the usage of mobile
devices that could make easier for them to do recycling and make this Social
change happen. Smart Recycling will provide information that could help people to
organize their day in order to recycle and put the trash into the container on time.
To have Everything Connected is possible with the current technology, there are
many different technologies Technically Feasible to connect the mobile devices,
trash trucks, trash containers, computers in offices, cellphones, etc. All these devices
are used in the whole waste management process to update all information
generated during each part of the process.
16. V. Innovation Documentation
Documenting the innovation allows us to begin to test the solution we are proposing. Throughout this
experimentation process we can bring our ideas to life, by either creating diagrams, sketches or prototypes
we can start realizing our idea and transforming it into something tangible, learning while developing these
tools and gathering feedback from the different users and stakeholders. This continuous learning process
helps us to refine and improve our idea to reach the desired innovative state of the solution we are building.
We found helpful use application of IDEO techniques to know suggestion and get close to the final user
conceptual ideas. Also, we use the Activity Analysis to know and learn which are the actions, performers,
interactions and objects that exist into the entire process of recycle, beginning with the citizens and ending
with the recyclers.
Development Process
Design thinking and Human-Centered Design Recap
The purpose of this section is to document the project’s development process. To accomplish it we will start
by reviewing again the concepts of Design Thinking and Human-Centered Design and understand how
they influence the activities taken to evaluate the ideas and prototypes generated so far to resolve the
problem stated in previous project phases. The main goal of this phase is to develop the solution’s prototype
and design the required tests that will gather the necessary feedback from users and stakeholders to help us
evaluate the proposed solution’s design.
Design Thinking attempts to inspire the essential element of creativity, the ability to take an abstract idea
and create something with it. It’s based upon the fundamental belief that an unexecuted idea, one that is
never realized, is a worthless proposition and that doing is equally as valuable as thinking. A big part of the
Design Thinking concept involves empathy for those you are designing for. It’s often manifested through a
series of activities, which attempt to create an experience of what or how your idea will ultimately be
consumed.
Per Gartner, Innovation begins with customers, whether they're internal or external. Design thinking emerged
from the world of design with a focus on people and their behavior. It has five major phases. Its strength
comes from the human-centric design of the first three phases, and, in our model, the last two phases are
taken up by lean startup.
17. V. Innovation Documentation
Solution Prototype
This application will be for users at home with Android and IOS devices, this device will it interact
with the Cloud Platform Service.
For creating this prototype it is necessary to show the different screens this framework will display. In
order to achieve this goal it is necessary to fulfill the following requirements to select the right
technology: Fast, time should be short to create a prototype. Easy to use. Multi Platform, it has to
support different platforms(Mobile, Different OS, etc.).
19. VI. Conclusions
Recycling trash has been for many years a hot topic in our society due to ecological
footprint we are leaving in this planet. During the past decades many organizations
had put a lot effort and resources to manage recyclable waste and they had
succeeded in some parts of the process, but nowadays we have more
technological tools those can help in this big duty proposed in this project, to unify all
efforts in one single service.
This project was big provider of knowledge regarding how the waste management
works and how could be improved. It was challenging to put together all the
required elements in one place to be monitored and get the best solution. It was
required to analyze not only the existing process and tools for recycling but current
software and hardware to monitor each part of the whole process. Access to
communication devices such as mobile computers or computers is a factor to take
into account, as it is intended to design a mobile platform that allows the
communication and real-time effectiveness of the parties involved in the
recollection process.
Definitely a good project to be implemented due to the impact it will have in the
society and the planet. It will bring people closer to the recycling culture and it will
be a first step to get all the benefits of recycling.
