The Association Between Disgust And The Moral Foundations...
The Association between Disgust Propensity and the Moral Foundations in making Moral Judgements. Jack W. Hill–Rennie The University of
Melbourne Student Number: 766488 Subject: Personality and Social Psychology 20009 Tutorial Time: Friday 11am–1pm Word Count: 2131 Abstract
The emotion disgust is an omnipresent feeling that dwells inside every person. Previous studies have shown that there are relationships between
disgust and the moral domains outlined in (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva & Ditto 2011). This study looks at four domains in particular and
attempts to confirm previously proposed associations as well as develop others. It was hypothesised that Disgust Propensity would be positively
correlated with each of the four domains. The participants, who were 596 undergraduate students, were instructed to complete several online
questionnaires relating to the study.(This The vast majority of findings were consistent with past literature. The results indicated a significant positive
correlation for all of the moral domains except Harm. Since some of the results were barely significant it would be beneficial to alter some of the
methodology and rerun the study to grasp a better understanding of potential relationships between disgust and the moral domains. Keywords: disgust
propensity, moral domains In the last century the majority of Moral Psychology has been focussed on reason and its role in the production of moral
judgement. The use of reasoning

Unethical Trade Is A Strong Feeling Of Dislike Or Disgust...
Many trades are considered repugnantfootnote{Oxfod dictionary defines repugnance as a strong feeling of dislike or disgust about something.}
citep{Roth2006}. The best example of repugnant trade is organ donation in the United States where paying the organ donors is illegal. This leads to
efficiency losses, as over 10,000 people die every year while on the wait list for organ transplant citep{Julio2015}. Social, demographic, geographic
and other factors are involved in rendering some trades more repugnant than others for different communities, ethnicities and countries. In this paper we
study how age, gender, education, employment, ethnic, religious and political backgrounds affect attitudes towards one seemingly repugnant trade i.e.
payment to kidney donors. justify According to the National Kidney Foundation there are currently 123,193footnote{ Organ Procurement and
Transplantation Network (OPTN) of the United States} people waiting for an organ transplant in United States of America. Out of these people about
101,662 are waiting for a kidney transplant. The average waiting time for a person to receive a kidney transplant is roughly around 3.6 years. About 12
people die each day because they could not receive a transplant. And 3000 new patients are added to the waiting list each monthfootnote{https:/
/www.kidney.org}. The need of the hour is to reduce this waiting time, which can happen only with increase in number of donations. However, getting
a kidney transplant is

Disgust As A Device For Disney Villain Portrayal
Disgust as a Device for Disney Villain Portrayal
In the last 50 years, the films produced by Walt Disney Productions have become fixtures amongst what defines modern childhood, establishing
Disney's characters as some of the most prominent role models present in the lives of children. Due to the highly influential nature of these films,
Disney's characters are popular amongst young children, whom are often first introduced to concepts of good, evil and gender norms through their
representations. It is established that observation is a key element in a child's development, and with the relative ease of accessibility in the modern day,
movies can prove visually influential. Teresa Thompson and Eugenia Zerbinos argue that the gender stereotypes present in the portrayal of Disney
protagonists and antagonists "could impact and interact with both the expectations [children] develop about relationships and appropriate behaviour."
(429)
Disney character animation creates a visual divide between Disney's antagonists and protagonists, in which heteronormativity is impressed upon heroes
and heroines alike, while transgendered traits and otherwise deviant behaviours are exclusive to antagonists. In support, Amanda Putnam notes that
female villains often adhere to these observations as "their faces, body shape and behaviour lend "mannish" traits to their characters," (151) while male
antagonists frequently possess traits traditionally associated with females. She further discusses

Reason and Disgust in Moral Foundations and Utilitarian Judgments

PSYC20009 – Personality and Social Psychology – 2014Abstract
The current study considered the recent debate in moral psychology as to the primacy of emotion in individual moral foundations and judgments
(Haidt, 2001) against previous conceptions of consciously driven reasoning processes as the major determinant in moral decisions (Turiel, 1983). The
study, involving 596 undergraduate psychology students, was in part derived from the Dual Process Model (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen,
2004) and questioned how distinct characteristics of personal and impersonal moral dilemmas appealed to emotion and reason respectively. It was
suspected that the individual character trait Need For Cognition (NFC) would show positive correlation with utilitarian (i.e. harm minimising)
responses for both personal and impersonal dilemmas. These hypotheses were not supported. The intuitive measure Disgust Propensity (DP) was
expected to show negative correlation with utilitarian responses for the personal dilemma. It was also forecast that individuals with high levels of DP
would demonstrate sensitivity to violations of the moral foundation of purity (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva, & Ditto, 2011). These hypotheses
were supported. The findings provide limited proof of the role of individual characteristics in moral activities. Further research accounting for factors
such as age,

Disgust Anger And Stereotypes
Participants completed five sets of questionnaires in order to evaluate all the variables needed.
Trait Anger (TA) was measured using a 10–item sub–scale of the State–Trait Anger Scale (STAXI; Spielberger, 1996). Responses were made on a
4–point scale (scores ranged from 1=almost never to 4=almost always) to statements regarding anger. Disgust Propensity (DP) was assessed using an
8–item sub–scale of a longer measure – the Disgust Propensity and Sensitivity Scale–Revised (DPSS–R). This particular sub–scale measures the
frequency with which one experiences disgust (Olatunji, Cisler, Deacon, Connolly, & Lohr, 2007). Participants were asked questions regarding disgust
and their responses were made on a 5–point scale (ranging from 1=never to 5=always). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moral emotions and intuition come first and directly cause moral judgment (Shweder & Haidt, 1993). Researchers use personal moral dilemmas in
order to test the association between moral emotions and moral judgment. Personal moral dilemmas and judgments concern the appropriateness of
personal moral violations (Greene et al., 2004). The footbridge dilemma is an example of a personal dilemma (Thomson, 1986). A trolley is racing
down a track towards five workmen on the track who will be killed if nothing is done to the trolley. You and a large stranger are standing in between
the trolley and the five workmen. The only way to save the five people is to push the stranger next to you onto the track to stop the oncoming trolley
but he will die in the process. Most people would not push the stranger onto the track (Greene et al., 2001). Not pushing the stranger is a deontological
response (do not kill innocents), whereas pushing the stranger is a utilitarian response (greatest good for greatest number). In Choe and Min's study
(2011), it was concluded that disgust propensity had a negative correlation to utilitarian judgment, while trait anger had correlated positively to
utilitarian judgment. They had a variety of personal moral scenarios that were randomised and given to the participants, who were asked to choose an
emotion that they felt. In order to have a better understanding

Victor Frankenstein Monster Essay
In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein creates a creature, stronger and better than humans in every way except his looks. After
Frankenstein abandons him, the Creature meets the De Lacey's, a nice little family that indirectly teach him how to read and write. In truth, the
Creature only becomes a monster after the hatred that Felix, one of the De Lacey's, shows him. Before, he had done nothing wrong, but afterwards,
all he did was fall down a slippery slope. When the Creature first started living near the De Lacey's, he was innately good and humble. He believed
that they were greater than him and could not understand why anybody would look as sad as the De Lacey's seemed. All he wanted to do was make
life better for them,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the De Lacey's were such superior beings, the Creature believed that all influence that would come from them would be positive and greatly
help him to develop and become accepted by all humans. The Creature is innately good and so he spends all of his time dreaming about how he
would, "first win their favor, and afterwards their love." The De Lacey's are the Creature's first step into being accepted by all humans, and all he can
think about is being affected by them to become more like them in order to finally be regarded as a human and live happily. The Creature was so
innately pure when he first moved in near the De Lacey's house that he could not possibly conceive man 's idea of doing evil. The Creature could not
believe that man, as amazing as it is, could feel something as disgusting as revenge. He believed that there was no way that someone could be driven
to such an extent that they would feel the need to kill someone else.
"These wonderful narrations inspired me with strange feelings. Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious
and base? He appeared at one time a mere scion of the evil principle, and at another as all that can be conceived of noble and godlike. To be a great
and virtuous man appeared the highest honour that can befall a sensitive being; to be base and vicious, as many on record have been, appeared the
lowest degradation, a condition more abject than that of the blind mole or harmless worm.

The Theory Of Moral Reasoning
he tension between reason and emotion in the human psyche has intrigued philosophers and psychologists for centuries. Under this theme, moral
psychologists have investigated the roles of reason and emotion in making moral judgements, which, in the context of moral dilemmas, involves
evaluating the acceptability of an action, given the virtues held by a specific culture (Haidt, 2001). Moral reasoning involves the conscious, effortful,
and controllable mental manipulation of information, while moral emotions involve spontaneous, affectively charged judgements that lack conscious
reasoning (Haidt, 2001). While earlier rationalist approaches argued that moral reasoning formed the basis of our moral judgements (Kohlberg, 1981),
more recent approaches, such as Haidt's (2001) Social Intuitionist Model, emphasise the role of affective processes, arguing that reasoned judgements
are rare, and that most examples of reasoning are simply post–hoc rationalisations of emotionally grounded judgements. The dual–process model
(DPM) (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen, 2004) consolidates these two approaches, proposing that reason and emotion are distinct and
equally important processes, which are elicited to different extents by particular features of moral situations, competing to form the final moral
judgement. Under this model, Greene et al. (2004) made a key distinction between "personal" and "impersonal" moral dilemmas. In the Trolley
Dilemma, a runaway trolley will kill five men

Homosexuality And Stereotypes
"In almost all societies, people identify a group of sexual actors as disgusting or pathological, contrasting them with "normal" or "pure" sexual actors
(prominently including the people themselves and their own groups)" (Nussbaum, 17). This allows for the politics of disgust, to play a key role in
stating what society defines as normal or obscure. If an individual does not fit the norm in society, they will automatically get stereotyped. An example
stated in the article depicted societies to state that Jews are "slimy" and "similar to maggots"(Nusssbaum, 16). Different locations are also found to rely
upon the politics of disgust depending on how sanitary they are deemed to be; Cameron states that acts that are deemed as disgusting... Show more

A big aspect to obscenity is harm, but in obscenity, harm cannot be 100 percent prevented just like politics of disgust cannot be 100 percent changed.
An example of this is child pornography, "Obscenity is to be distinguished sharply from child pornography, which is prohibited because children are
harmed in its production and the harm cannot be effectively prevented so long as there is a profitable market for its products" (Koppelman, 1637).
Obscenity, like politics of disgust plays an important role in law. Acts of obscenity do not mean that "the law should police what we feel" (Koppelman,
1639), just like society should not tell individuals what is disgusting or unlawful. Another way that it cannot be controlled is due to self–centeredness,
"The first sort of objectification will here be called "self–centeredness." It occurs when one is so focused on one's own gratification that

Frankenstein Vs. The Monster Essays
Frankenstein Vs. The Monster
At this point in the novel, I sympathize with the monster even though he has become a terrible person. As his creator, Victor Frankenstein should have
cared for the monster despite his disgusting appearance.
Frankenstein failed to provide the monster with any type of parental guidance and instead ran away from his responsibilities. In the first few hours of
his birth, the monster is faced with rejection, even from his creator. If Frankenstein would have guided and nurtured him, then the monster would have
never sought revenge on Frankenstein and his family. However, I sympathize mostly with the monster because he is no the one to blame. I believe with
most instances that the parent is the one to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the monster would have encountered a family in which the husband was an abusive drunk and the wife beat her children,
Frankenstein would have evolved into a different person.
The monster is hated by every person he encounters. Frankenstein calls his creation a horrible disaster, which leaves a mark on the monster.
The creator leaves him for dead and does not care what happens to the monster. The monster had to learn things by himself like the effects of fire and
hunger. The monster learns that fire causes heat but learns that it can burn him sticking his hand in the fire. A good parent will teach a child things
about nature and will nurture the child. A good parent will also teach a child the difference between right and wrong. However, Frankenstein leaves his
creation for dead and wishes death upon the monster.
On the other hand, I need to show some sympathy to Frankenstein and place some of the blame on the monster. The monster learned much from the
time Frankenstein left him in the apartment. The monster kills the boy out of pure revenge against Frankenstein. The monster is disgusted at human
nature because of all the killing that occurs between us, yet he still goes ahead and does it himself. He contradicts himself and is a hypocrite.
In his second encounter with a human, the monster enters a home of a shepherd, who with one look at him, runs away in fear and disgust. The monster
then enters a

Behavioral Avoidance Of People With Facial Disfigurement
INTRODUCTION The authors of this paper are interested in the psychological basis of the behavioural avoidance of people with facial
disfigurement. Specifically, they are interested in how people respond to individuals with facial birth marks. Individuals with issues such as acne,
psoriasis, eczema, cleft palates, facial birth marks, and other facial lesions, have all reported being avoided by others. Such avoidance can occur in the
spheres of social relationships, employment opportunities, as well as within health and education settings. Thus it is clear that facial disfigurement can
significantly impact upon a person 's life. It has been suggested that the avoidance of people with facial disfigurement is due to the disfigurement...

METHODS Under the guise of an 'imitation study ' 98 participants were recruited (MQ students) (18–50 years, 72 female, 26 male). The study set out
to test responses to confederates feigning "real" disease signs (influenza), "false alarms" (birthmarks), and to a healthy control. Participants were
asked to imitate tasks performed by confederates who were shown in video clips. The imitation involved props, and participants were requested to
perform the imitation while they watched the confederate perform the action via video. There were 3 different props: towel, harmonica, snorkel
mask. In regards to prop use, there were 5 levels of usage: no contact, contact with hand, contact with head, contact with face, contact with mouth.
And the 5 levels of contact were carried out across all 'disease conditions '. The experiment was conducted in a small room with a table upon which
the props were located in boxes, there was also a TV which played the videos of confederates, and video recording equipment. T–shirts which were
worn by the confederates were strategically placed in the room so as to give the impression that the confederate had just been there. Participants were
informed that no one other than the person in the video had used the props, and that they were not obligated to perform any imitation that they felt

The Nature And Moral Significance Of Disgust
What is one vital concept that drives the existence of humans in society? Every moment of every day humans experience a phenomenon that has
grasped the interest of psychologists and philosophers alike. This perplexing notion is the manifestation of emotions. There are hundreds of emotions
that one can experience, but one in particular has caused a debate. The emotion of disgust has induced a plethora of theories attempting to explain the
following normative question: Should disgust influence one's considered moral judgments? On one side, the advocates state that disgust influences a
person's moral judgments. On the other hand, the skeptics doubt the power that disgust has on a one's considered moral judgments. A philosopher
named Daniel Kelly reflects on this particular discourse in his novel "Yuck: The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust" and defends the idea that
disgust does not impact a person's considered moral judgments. In order to support this position, Kelly expresses his opposition to multiple theories,
such as the Deep Wisdom Theory and Terror Management Theory, and utilizes the Entanglement Thesis and the Co
–Opt Thesis to substantiate his
claim. To begin, it is crucial to understand the controversy between the disgust advocates and disgust skeptics before presenting Kelly's own position
on the issue. Overall, advocates propose that an emotion, such as disgust, is a mechanism adequate enough to direct one's moral evaluations. Disgust
advocates support the

Emotions "No PDA!" I will continue to hear through out my day when I went from class to class at the midst of passing period during high school
and middle school. I never knew what teachers meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the
girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that "PDA" abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of the first times I learned an
American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is "unmanly" for a man to
show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how men show their
emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding
it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is
unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as
punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. I completely understand why burping at without saying excuse me is
unacceptable now. No one wants to hear anyone else let out gas in any way. It may have a disgusting same that follows it, and is so unexpected that

Analysis Of ' Anatomy Of Disgust ' By William Ian Miller
Jennifer Street Dr. Nigel Joseph English 2260F October 15th, 2014 Dos and Don'ts: Insignificant and Significant Taboos in Western Society When
people must interact in a public space, there are certain actions that are frowned upon and taught against from an early age. These unacceptable
actions can be referred to as taboos. The word 'taboo' refers to something that is prohibited or restricted by social custom. Since the parameters of a
taboo involve social custom, they differ from one society to the next. This essay will focus on taboos present in Western society. Three texts that
discuss types of taboos in Western society will be referenced in this essay. Anatomy of Disgust by William Ian Miller discusses the taboos that make
many people revolted and uncomfortable, and why. "Territories of Self" by Erving Goffman covers the reasons why we act the way we do in public.
Thirdly, Sophie Watson's "The Disenchantments of Urban Encounters" reveals the reasoning behind ones' actions in public versus private spaces.
These works all discuss the different types of human taboos and what makes them inappropriate, but fail to differentiate which are substantial enough to
cause humanity to falter, and which are trivial enough to not offend all people. Theorists have focused on "serious" taboos such as abuse and
unlawfulness, and have dismissed lesser versions as merely clashing behavior amongst different cultures. I will argue, however, that these milder
insignificant taboos are

The Use of Disgust Elicitors in Greek Love by Katherine Dunn
The fundamental nature of the element of disgust is quite unsavory. Disgust is a relatively new term for a sensory experience that spans thousands of
years, and has been studied throughout the millennium of Western history by philosophers and psychologists alike, to include Darwin, Hume, Hazlitt,
and Freud (Miller, 1997). Psychologists generally disagree that disgust should be classified as an emotion; but rather the sensory processing of its
elicitors is what constitutes an emotional response (Plantiga, 2009). The primary nature of the element of disgust is that it serves as a social
function by differentiating between appropriate class behaviors and attitudes. While Darwin's etiology of the term was reserved to primarily
describe offensive tastes, it has taken on very broad connotations since then, referring to anything that is extremely displeasing or revolting by means
of all five senses (Miller, 1997). More importantly, the term plays an important role in moral judgment, as reflected by social and cultural norms and
beliefs. This paper will briefly examine the use of disgust elicitors in the book "Geek Love," as well as the literary usage and connotations of modern
day applications.
In terms of literary practice, the physically disgusting is often described in visceral detail, specifically in adult fiction, and it almost always is used in
a narrative context (Plantiga, 2009). However, it has not been used extensively in modern fiction works. The book "Geek Love" by

The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The phrase "don't judge a book by its cover" usually means the cover of the book could mislead the actual meaning of the text. Just like that if the
author states that the genre of the book is supposed to be horror doesn't mean it is actually horror. Audience could view the novel or the text different
ways. Certain genre has certain rules and criteria that they need to follow in order to create that genre. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" byCharlotte Perkins
Gilman, she shows how the narrator who may or may not be Jane, moved into this big house with her husband John for few weeks. He is also her
doctor, treating her for postpartum depression. She wasn't supposed to do anything or meet anyone. Since she was so bored, she started to look in
depth in the wall paper, and noticed a lady, the monster trying to get out of the pattern. Toward the end of the story she got worst because her illness
became the monster in the wall paper. In "The Nature of Horror" by Noel Carroll, he explains how to decide if a text is classified as horror or not.
There are many techniques he suggested, like a horror text should have discovery plot, or audience and narrator should feel disgusted and horrified.
There should be a monster and the monster have to be from a foreign place. Based on Carroll's text, Gilman's story does qualifies as horror because
she used the discovery plot to set the story and explained how the monster from the wall and her illness was from a foreign place, and it was threatening

In the sonnet Written in Disgust of Vulgar Superstition by Keats, he attacks the church for how they conduct themselves and behave. As a romantic he

Frankenstein's Creation Essay : The Creation In Frankenstein
The Creation in Frankenstein did not owe Victor anything. Victor did the monster wrong by creating him in the first place. The monster went
through so many hardships by being an outcast and a looser. But to top it all off he felt abandoned and lost because when his creator first saw him
he freaked out and ran away and locked himself in his room. So the Creations reasons were justified because he felt abandoned by his creator,
alone or an outcast, and was given nothing to help him survive or enjoy life. In the beginning of the book Victor becomes so excited and he in a
way gets something like tunnel vision and doesn't really see clearly what he is doing and creating. Victor gets body parts and puts them together
but doesn't realize that the Creation is actually really disgusting and ugly. When Victor finally gets everything he needs to make the Creation he
has gained a god complex and i think the reason for creating this Creation is because of all the philosophers he has read about and he wants to be
just like them. Victor gives the Creation life and he finally realizes that he made a mistake when the Creation is alive. Victor was horrified and
disgusted by what he saw that he had created. He was so disgusted that he ran away and locked himself in his room. This would make anyone feel
sad and terrible about themselves so the Creation had to of felt abandoned by his creator when Victor ran away and didn't come back to see him. In the

Should Disgust Influence Our Considered Moral Judgments?
This paper will examine the normative question "should disgust influence our considered moral judgments?" Daniel Kelly addresses in chapter five
of his book, Yuck!, in two profoundly opposite views. These two views are between the moral disgust advocate who say, "yes" to the question and the
moral disgust skeptics who say "no". We will discuss these two very different views in depth, what Kelly's views are, his account of the nature of
disgust, and lastly, how he uses the Entanglement thesis and Co–opt thesis view to debunk the moral disgust advocates view on disgust. Before this
paper can examine moral disgust in depth we must first define core disgust and how core disgust transformed into moral disgust. Core disgust is an
emotional response of revulsion at the prospect of something that is considered to be offensive, distasteful or unpleasant. This emotional response
was created to protect our bodies from harm and originally was developed to serve as an oral defense, a function to protect people from poisonous
plants and disease avoidance. However core disgust has evolved along side with civilization and has now grown into elaborated disgust. Disgust is
now not just protecting us from food, animals, or body products it has now evolved to include poor hygiene, sexual violations, body envelope
violations, and any contact with death or dead bodies. Additional triggers of disgust are interpersonal contamination and socio–moral disgust, which is
defined as disgust around

The Cause Of Mental Shift In Shakespeare's Othello
In Shakespeare's Othello, the shame that characters have towards themselves and the disgust that Othello has for himself cause Othello's mental shift in
Act 3, Scene 3. It is the shame caused by the interracial relationships in the play and the disgust Othello has for himself because of his race that causes
his mental shift.
The existing and non–existing interracial relationships in the play cause shame in some characters which causes Othello's mental shift. In Deborah

states, "...To fall in love with what she feared to look upon"(I.III.116). His disgust for himself causes his mental shift by making him believeIago's lies
more easily. When Iago begins to manipulate Othello, instead of thinking that what Iago is saying is highly unlikely, he listens and allows Iago's lies
to poison his mind. When Iago says, "She did deceive her father, marrying you, And when she seemed to shake and fear your looks, She loved them
most" (III.III.238–240), Othello does not question it because of the disgust he has for himself which leads to him believing everything that Iago says.
This allows Iago to easily manipulate Othello into deciding to kill Desdemona. Othello's disgust also causes his mental shift by making him less
confident in his relationship. A simple solution to the conflict in the play would be for

How Is Mendacity In Cat On A Hot Tin Roof
Mendacity is untruthfulness and disgust is a feeling of revulsion by something. All the characters in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" have experienced
mendacity and disgust. For mendacity, we had all but Big Daddy, Big Mama, and Brick lie about Big Daddy's sickness. They, as in Margaret, Mae,
Reverend Tooker, and Gooper, said it was a spastic colon and not cancer, but it was truthfully malignant cancer (Brick did not know for a while that it
was a lie). This is something that angers and disgusts Big Daddy when he found out from Brick by accident. It was something he was not expecting
and resulted in his growing resentment for the others. They had told him something of mendacity and added on to the other lies he had experienced his
whole life. He was disgusted with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Disgust can be seen in Gooper also. When he learns that Big Daddy will most likely be giving his twenty–eight–thousand–acre plantation to Brick,
Gooper was appalled. Why should an alcoholic like Brick get an estate? Gooper was disgusted by learning that from Big Mama.
Big Mama experiences mendacity when she had an argument with Big Daddy on his birthday. He tells her that he never loved her, that she never
loved him, and that it was all just a lie. This also brought disgust to Big Mama because she could not comprehend it, which was why she left crying.
Brick was a major character that experienced mendacity and disgust. Skipper and Brick had a 'clean' and close friendship. The relationship Brick had
with Skipper was something Brick was truly happy with. It ruined him learning that Skipper was a homosexual man and had slept with his wife one
time. He felt disgusted with the mendacity found in their friendship. Skipper was untruthful by not telling Brick that fact and is why Brick felt
disgusted. However, I believe that Brick

Pennigon's Framework Of Analysis
Current research suggest that emotions have global effects on all aspects of cognitions. One manner in which to examine this interaction is through
Pennington's (2002) framework of analysis. Pennigton (2002) argues that cognitive neuroscience needs to be conducted using levels of analysis.
Pennigton breaks this into four categories: etiological (genes and the environment), brain mechanisms, neuropsychology, and behavior. Each of these
structures effect each other and can be better thought of as integrated system. The role of emotions (in particular disgust) and its relation to moral
judgment and reasoning can be analyzed within Pennigon's framework. The etiological development of disgust and moral judgement is hypothesized
to originate from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The findings suggest that emotions, disgust in particular, interacts with moral judgment. The fourth level of analysis is behavior. Inbar, Pizarro &
Bloom (2008) examined the role of disgust and moral judgment in politics. Inbar et al., (2008) contended that individuals that identify as politically
conservative would have a stronger disgust sensitivity than liberals. Prior studies suggest that conservatives view the maintenance of the moral
good as relevant in deciding if an action was right or wrong. Participants were given a scale to determine disgust sensitivity and a scale to determine
political orientation. The results suggest that disgust sensitivity predicts conservatism. In a follow up study, Inbar et al., (2008) gave an expanded
disgust sensitivity scale and political orientation scale. They also included a political issue questioner, where participants rated his or her view on a
variety of political issues ranging from gay marriage to the economy. Participants higher in disgust sensitivity were more opposed to gay marriage and
abortion, as well as tax cuts. Proneness to disgust was also associated with greater self–reported political conservatism. These findings suggest that
disgust sensitivity plays a role in moral judgment, and in

Descriptive Essay About Bum Hole
The Bum Hole is the most disturbing and confusing place in Davie. My best friend Khazi and I were hanging out one Friday afternoon during
summer break. While making plans, we got a call from our mutual friend, Conor. Conor found out about the Bum Hole through a couple of friends
before the school year ended. I could hear the anticipation in his voice when he said, "There's this dark, creepy place just on the outskirts of
Davie". We decided to invite our friend Andrew because he is always up for an adventure. I shiver at the idea that a darkness will hover over me
like a raincloud in the night sky. The Bum Hole is dark, disturbing and disgusting. The Bum Hole will drown you in darkness. The open field was
muddy and stamped in tracks from past visitors. The overpass of 595 casted a shadow over the defoliated area. Not only enclosed in shade, but
confined with the feeling of a dark presence. Underneath the highway, walking up the ramp of a cement support beam. We came up to a small
enclosure where we had to squeeze through two cement walls, two feet apart. After 10 minutes of struggling to fit everybody in, we were now in view
of a pitch black tunnel entrance. Entering the hole was another level of intimidation, that we were not ready to participate in just yet. That being said
Khazi, Conor and myself were still hesitant about going in without the assurance of each other. This became an opportunity for our minds to create
impressions of things. What if we actually ran into

Has America's Disgust At Seaworld Analysis
What has attracted millions of families and spectators over the years, SeaWorld has recently brought reproach and disgrace. A few years ago,
SeaWorld's unacceptable treatment of their whales and sea animals was revealed and has greatly impaired their visitor attendance. This was exposed
in the article, "Has America's disgust at SeaWorld already peaked?" written by Jordan Weissmann. This particular article caught my attention because
personally, I have made many visits to SeaWorld and to hear that the beautiful whales that I have witnessed were treated poorly, upset me deeply. I
would have never guessed that such a well known park known for its incredible sea life would ever dare to harm their animals. And as mentioned
before, because of this

Benefits Of Genetically Modified Food Products
Due in large part to the evidence that proves genetically modified crops to be much less safe than the crops that are bread without any modification,
many U.S. citizens express anger or disgust toward these food products. The acceptance of these modified food products in the U.S. is a controversial
subject, and it has attracted an extensive amount of research study due to the alarming difference between the opinions of the general public who say it
is unsafe, and the opinions of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, who claim just the opposite, by an almost 90% majority.
According to a more recent meta–analysis of these research studies, people feel that there is a greater risk than benefit to eating the food. The... Show

Next, the study conducted an assessment of the participants' affective reactions by using a two–version scenario analysis that described the
consumption of some foods that had been genetically modified. From this assessment, they found that disgust had a closer relation to the idea of
moral absolutism than anger did. Finally, they discussed different regulations concerning genetically modified food in the U.S. and applied a
rating scale to determine the level of the participants support for such regulations. The results of this assessment pointed to the idea that disgust
does indeed have a role in the support for restrictions on genetically modified food. The final hypotheses from this research study are as follows:
First, since the majority of U.S. citizens who oppose genetically modified food products were proven to be moral absolutists, they are best
described as individuals who are evidence sensitive. Next, these moral absolutists, as well as the rest of the citizens who oppose genetically
modified food, will feel more disgusted than angry when considering eating genetically modified food. Next, the feeling of disgust as well as the
sensitivity to disgust can make predictions related to the support for different legal restrictions of genetically modified food. Lastly, moral absolutists
view the issue of genetically modified food differently from everyone else because one's personal values lead

Evolutionary Theories Of Human Behavior
Before discussing this question it is important to understand how neurotransmission occurs. Firstly, the neuron impulse needs to be triggered, dopamine
for example can be triggered by something a human finds pleasurable such as cigarettes or food. After the neuron is triggered it fires the impulse across
the neuron releasing dopamine transmitters into the synaptic gap. From there, the neurotransmitter binds with specific receptor sites to activate the
dopamine. Almost immediately after the human is filled with joy and pleasure. This explains how (especially in addicts) the site of things can cause
pleasure and affect human behavior in a positive way. Contradicting this however if there is a problem or lack of dopamine, the human will have

Historically disgust would have allowed human ancestors to survive long and produce strong offspring because they would avoid harmful or rancid
food or animals. Because of this, similar genes would have been passed to the next generation. One case study that represents how disgust has
become an acquired and evolutionary trait that explains human behavior is Fessler (2006). In this cases study Fessler hypothesized that disgust
would help in keeping the potential fetus safe from harm. In order to best prove this 496 healthy pregnant women from ages 18 to 50 in an online
survey were given different images and asked to rank them on the scale system of disgust. This study discovered that women in their first trimester
largely scored higher on the level of disgust compared to that of women in the second and third trimester. Furthermore, when the study was controlled
more greatly it was found that higher levels of sickness were in response to that of food. This study helps supports disgust being an evolutionary trait
passed on by humans because it helps young offspring fight potential disease as well as assist in the reproduction of offspring for having a greater
survival chance.Within biological psychology, one of the primary principle states that there are biological correlates on behavior. By this, there are
genetically acquired behavioral traits such as hormones and neurotransmitters that explains why humans have particular behaviors. One case study
that helps to prove this theory is newcomer et al 1999. In this study participants were broken up into three groups, group one given the highest
amount of cortisol had tablets that were 160 mg of cortisol for four days. Following this was group two who were given 40 mg of cortisol for also for
4 days, and lastly group three was given a placebo tablet. Cortisol is a

The Anatomy Of Disgust
Hierarchy is a concept that has shown up in all of our readings, and the way it functions and is maintained is worth considering. In particular, Michel
Foucault's "Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison" and William Miller's "The Anatomy of Disgust" present two explicit examples of hierarchy,
and the role that the subject matter of these books plays in hierarchies. In these books I found that discipline and disgust are both used as tools of
constructing and maintaining hierarchy, and I argue that those in power use disgust to discipline and punish the people under their control in order to
maintain the hierarchies in which they possess power. Discipline and punishment, even without disgust, are a very important means by which people...

White Americans had to explain black subjugation as a natural condition, not one they imposed by brute force for the nation's economic profit.
Treating race as biology constituted the only suitable "moral apology" ...for slavery in a society that claimed equality as its most cherished ideal. (24)
With this, Roberts is saying that Africans were enslaved for profit, and that the biological difference of race was politically constructed to justify their
treatment. Their enslavement for profit created a hierarchy in which Africans were on the bottom and White men were on the top, and eventually more
races were defined and roped into the hierarchy. Once this was done, there were many ways in which disgust, discipline, and punishment played a role
in maintaining that hierarchy, and continue to do so

The present research aimed to examine whether individual differences in emotion can predict the judgment made in moral reactions. To be specific, as
the representative trait emotions, trait disgust and trait anger were investigated, and the study also analyzed their relationship with two moral domains,
harm and authority. It was expected that trait disgust would be positively associated with the moral judgment of harm, and authority values, and trait
anger would also positively associate with those two values. The results of this study only supported part of the hypotheses. A significant but weak

Relating to trait anger and the harm values, our finding failed to support the hypothesis. The present study indicated that it was less likely for
participants who scored higher in trait anger made a negative judgment according to the violation of harm. Surprisingly, the result was opposite to what
previous researches found. However, what the original CAD stated was autonomy violations cause anger (Haidt, et al., 1999). Moreover, Chen, Li, and
Gao's (2016) experiments based on the CAD theory found that Chinese people's angry about events which violated the moral foundations of harm
depended on context, such as the modern and traditional social context. It is difficult to conclude the relationship between trait anger and harm values
as different factors can induce anger and we cannot easily tell the differences between trait anger and state anger. Thus, the participants might not
accurately assess their trait anger in the study. In addition, our findings showed a non–significant and weak positive relationship between trait anger
and authority values. The result was in accordance with some of the previous researches. Studies conducted by Steiger and Reyna (2017) used both
Izard et al.'s (1993) trait anger, contempt, and disgust scales and Spielberger's (1996) Trait Anger Expression Inventory to find the relationship between
trait anger and all five moral foundations. Izard's trait anger was not significantly

" The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano" is a slave narrative that describes the experiences of one African slave's capture and
enslavement. In this story Olaudah is a young African boy who is captured and put on a slave ship to be traded in another country. This story reveals
multiple human traits, some are good and some are bad. The human traits that were most displayable in the story is fear, disgust ,and cruelty.
In the story of Olaudah Equiano one of the traits from the story is fear. Olaudah feared for his life and the white people on the ship. When Olaudah
first got on the ship he was afraid because he had never seen white men before. He says, "I was now persuaded that I had gotten into a world of bad
spirits and that they were going to kill me. Their complexions, too differing so much from ours, their long hair, and they language they spoke (which
was very different from any I had ever heard) united to confirm me in this belief.". Another situation where Olaudah showed fear is when he got on the

flogged so unmercifully with a large rope near the foremast, that he died of the consequence of it; and they tossed him over the side as they would
have done a brute. Additionally, another source of cruelty is when the white men, one day had caught some fish and killed them all. The crew caught
too many fish, rather than give any to the slaves, they tossed the rest back overboard; Even though the slaves begged and prayed the white men still

Analyzing Bruno Wicker's Perception Of Tort
The sensation of disgust occurs when we are offended by something, so simply observing someone eating an unsavory meal with an expression of
disgust can make us have the same sensation and expression as well. The observer knows to stay away from that particular meal. This incident raises
the question of how we each understand this behavioral cue. A group of scientists led by Bruno Wicker questioned whether the same areas in the insula
are both active during the experience of disgust and observing disgust in others. The authors suggested two kinds of hypotheses that could explain the
activations in our brain as well as our ability to recognize and understand disgust in others. One kind is the "cold" hypothesis, which signifies the
recognition of disgust through cognitive mechanisms that do not involve emotion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From these hypotheses, scientists predicted that observing disgust in another person should activate the same brain areas that become active when one
experiences disgust on themselves. Previous studies have suggested that there is merit to their prediction. It has been found that the insula is activated
when exposed to disgusting scents and during observations of disgusted expressions (Royet et al., 2003; Phillips et al., 1997). However, none of these
studies examined if the same areas of the insula were active for both conditions in the same subjects. This was the first study to actually show that a
common neural activation within the anterior insula was present when exposed to disgusting stimulants and observing disgusted facial

Moral Decision Making Is Not Independent Of Trait Anger
Abstract Many have deliberated over the cognitive processes involved in morality. Despite moral cognition being a very unique process for each
individual, there is far less research on the role of individual differences in moral judgments. It was predicted that one would find associations between
certain traits; disgust propensity and trait anger, with authority agreeableness and utilitarian judgment. Participants were 596 University of Melbourne
students, mean age 22.42 years. The data was collected from responses on a series of subscales in a questionnaire. There was a significant positive
correlation between disgust propensity and authority agreeableness, suggesting that emotional states (intuition) can override and influence... Show more

No two people will have identical reasoning and intuition processes, which motivate their moral decisions or judgments. Thus, it is fundamental to
study the influence of individual differences on the role of emotion, reason and intuition in moral decision–making. This in turn can tell us something
about the cognitive processes and the way they differ from person to person. The present study is set out to consider how certain traits influence moral
decision–making and how they interact with each other. The particular individual difference measurements focused on in this study include trait anger,
disgust propensity, authority agreeableness and utilitarianism in moral judgments. Haidt (2001) has previously suggested that moral intuitions are
largely dependant on emotions, with the use of intuition. Later, Graham et al., (2011) suggested a hypothetical model of five common moral
foundations, one being authority. Previous research has discovered that when disgust propensity is decreased (the situation is manipulated to be
cleansed or purified), participants found moral actions less wrong or severe (Schnall et al., 2008). More recent research by Horberg, Oveis, Keltner,
and Cohen (2009), also found support for the claim that disgust predicts stronger condemnations of wrong actions or 'purity violations'. It is expected
that there will be a positive correlation between disgust propensity and authority agreeableness. This would support the social intuitionism idea

Humans ' Anger Me, And I Disgust Them
Humans disgust me, and I disgust them. Humans are horrid creatures with their greed, hatred, and violence. They show no mercy towards other
humans. Humans, to me, are pure evil. Though many would disagree because they don't appear to be capable of such obscenities. They don't look
like someone who can do evil. They don't look like monsters. That's really all it is. Humans don't look like the disgusting, evil creatures that they
are. I look exactly how a human acts: disgusting and evil; that is why humans despise me. I look like some worthless, disgusting creature that
should be left to rot, even though it should be those humans, who should be suffering with pain and loneliness, not I. I didn't always look like this:

are handsome the way you are," she would say. My mother loved me. She cared for me with all her might. Even after I was cursed to look like a
beast. I went wandering out into the woods, and a witch found me. I don't even remember the encounter anymore. All I remember was the witch yelling

Summary Of Kazuo Nussbaum's From Disgust To Humanity
After reading Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, I now read the 'human' in 'human subjects' as anyone who is capable of exhibiting emotions and
thoughts that are specific to the human experience. Nussbaum's philosophical work, From Disgust To Humanity, has enhanced my understanding of
the concept that needs to be incorporated into our mode of thinking, in order to help us see one another as human; this component is imagination. I have
come to learn that imaginative attunement encompasses complexities in terms of its conditions and the role it plays in respecting individuals,
regardless of their gender or racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and religious background. Never Let Me Go centers on the lives of human clones who are
not considered 'human' because of their genetic upbringing; Madame is one of the characters who shares this belief, yet she performs acts that would
activate the imagination of those who are repulsed by the human–like clones. The ability to imagine encourages people to view others as agents of
emotion and reason; this relationship, in turn, creates space for respect and even empathy to be directed towards these beings on behalf of those with
imaginative attunement. In From Disgust To Humanity, the philosopher argues that disgust has influenced the creation of numerous policies that limit
equality for certain populations. She makes the claim that "a politics of humanity" would allow for individuals to empathize with others or at least grant
them the tools to understand the perspective of others, because of respect, imagination and curiosity. The most fascinating part of this relationship is
the "politics of humanity" which Nussbaum speaks of, cannot operate sufficiently with respect alone– "respect is politically incomplete without
imagination" (Nussbaum xix/xvii). With that being said, imaginative attunement has become not only necessary in my comprehension of what it means
to be human, but also my capacity to respect the identities of people whom I may perceive as different from my own. The human–like clones in Never
Let Me Go fall under this category; despite being genetically engineered into being, I believe that they are capable of living with the emotions and
thoughts that are

The Anxiety Of Eating Disorders
Anger and sadness are both common emotions when dealing with not only mental illness but specifically eating disorders. Both are easy to identify
however, most people don't realize disgust is a core emotion, best described as a feeling of intense aversion. Like any bodily system, the disgust
emotional response can fail and lead to severe health problems. Researchers have only recently begun to recognize the attitude of disgust and how it
plays a part in the vast majority of of mental illnesses, including obsessive–compulsive disorder, phobias and depression. While disgust does play a role
in mental illness, it mainly occupies eating disorders such as restrictive eaters, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. With these eating disorders
the emotion of disgust is altered and is either heightened or abnormally suppressed. In general, it is assumed that eating disorders stem from
depression or anxiety however disgust is an underlying cause of eating disorders and solving this problem will help lead to a cure for eating disorders.
(Schienle, Phillips, Houben, Ekman)
Disgust is classified as a "food based emotion" and was developed as an evolutionary response in order to forbid ingestion of harmful contents.

The Association Between Disgust And The Moral Foundations...

  • 1. The Association Between Disgust And The Moral Foundations... The Association between Disgust Propensity and the Moral Foundations in making Moral Judgements. Jack W. Hill–Rennie The University of Melbourne Student Number: 766488 Subject: Personality and Social Psychology 20009 Tutorial Time: Friday 11am–1pm Word Count: 2131 Abstract The emotion disgust is an omnipresent feeling that dwells inside every person. Previous studies have shown that there are relationships between disgust and the moral domains outlined in (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva & Ditto 2011). This study looks at four domains in particular and attempts to confirm previously proposed associations as well as develop others. It was hypothesised that Disgust Propensity would be positively correlated with each of the four domains. The participants, who were 596 undergraduate students, were instructed to complete several online questionnaires relating to the study.(This The vast majority of findings were consistent with past literature. The results indicated a significant positive correlation for all of the moral domains except Harm. Since some of the results were barely significant it would be beneficial to alter some of the methodology and rerun the study to grasp a better understanding of potential relationships between disgust and the moral domains. Keywords: disgust propensity, moral domains In the last century the majority of Moral Psychology has been focussed on reason and its role in the production of moral judgement. The use of reasoning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Unethical Trade Is A Strong Feeling Of Dislike Or Disgust... Many trades are considered repugnantfootnote{Oxfod dictionary defines repugnance as a strong feeling of dislike or disgust about something.} citep{Roth2006}. The best example of repugnant trade is organ donation in the United States where paying the organ donors is illegal. This leads to efficiency losses, as over 10,000 people die every year while on the wait list for organ transplant citep{Julio2015}. Social, demographic, geographic and other factors are involved in rendering some trades more repugnant than others for different communities, ethnicities and countries. In this paper we study how age, gender, education, employment, ethnic, religious and political backgrounds affect attitudes towards one seemingly repugnant trade i.e. payment to kidney donors. justify According to the National Kidney Foundation there are currently 123,193footnote{ Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) of the United States} people waiting for an organ transplant in United States of America. Out of these people about 101,662 are waiting for a kidney transplant. The average waiting time for a person to receive a kidney transplant is roughly around 3.6 years. About 12 people die each day because they could not receive a transplant. And 3000 new patients are added to the waiting list each monthfootnote{https:/ /www.kidney.org}. The need of the hour is to reduce this waiting time, which can happen only with increase in number of donations. However, getting a kidney transplant is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Disgust As A Device For Disney Villain Portrayal Disgust as a Device for Disney Villain Portrayal In the last 50 years, the films produced by Walt Disney Productions have become fixtures amongst what defines modern childhood, establishing Disney's characters as some of the most prominent role models present in the lives of children. Due to the highly influential nature of these films, Disney's characters are popular amongst young children, whom are often first introduced to concepts of good, evil and gender norms through their representations. It is established that observation is a key element in a child's development, and with the relative ease of accessibility in the modern day, movies can prove visually influential. Teresa Thompson and Eugenia Zerbinos argue that the gender stereotypes present in the portrayal of Disney protagonists and antagonists "could impact and interact with both the expectations [children] develop about relationships and appropriate behaviour." (429) Disney character animation creates a visual divide between Disney's antagonists and protagonists, in which heteronormativity is impressed upon heroes and heroines alike, while transgendered traits and otherwise deviant behaviours are exclusive to antagonists. In support, Amanda Putnam notes that female villains often adhere to these observations as "their faces, body shape and behaviour lend "mannish" traits to their characters," (151) while male antagonists frequently possess traits traditionally associated with females. She further discusses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Reason And Disgust : Moral Foundations And Utilitarian... Reason and Disgust in Moral Foundations and Utilitarian Judgments Gajan Thiyagarajah (636280) PSYC20009 – Personality and Social Psychology – 2014Abstract The current study considered the recent debate in moral psychology as to the primacy of emotion in individual moral foundations and judgments (Haidt, 2001) against previous conceptions of consciously driven reasoning processes as the major determinant in moral decisions (Turiel, 1983). The study, involving 596 undergraduate psychology students, was in part derived from the Dual Process Model (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen, 2004) and questioned how distinct characteristics of personal and impersonal moral dilemmas appealed to emotion and reason respectively. It was suspected that the individual character trait Need For Cognition (NFC) would show positive correlation with utilitarian (i.e. harm minimising) responses for both personal and impersonal dilemmas. These hypotheses were not supported. The intuitive measure Disgust Propensity (DP) was expected to show negative correlation with utilitarian responses for the personal dilemma. It was also forecast that individuals with high levels of DP would demonstrate sensitivity to violations of the moral foundation of purity (Graham, Nosek, Haidt, Iyer, Koleva, & Ditto, 2011). These hypotheses were supported. The findings provide limited proof of the role of individual characteristics in moral activities. Further research accounting for factors such as age, ... • 5. Disgust Anger And Stereotypes Participants completed five sets of questionnaires in order to evaluate all the variables needed. Trait Anger (TA) was measured using a 10–item sub–scale of the State–Trait Anger Scale (STAXI; Spielberger, 1996). Responses were made on a 4–point scale (scores ranged from 1=almost never to 4=almost always) to statements regarding anger. Disgust Propensity (DP) was assessed using an 8–item sub–scale of a longer measure – the Disgust Propensity and Sensitivity Scale–Revised (DPSS–R). This particular sub–scale measures the frequency with which one experiences disgust (Olatunji, Cisler, Deacon, Connolly, & Lohr, 2007). Participants were asked questions regarding disgust and their responses were made on a 5–point scale (ranging from 1=never to 5=always). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moral emotions and intuition come first and directly cause moral judgment (Shweder & Haidt, 1993). Researchers use personal moral dilemmas in order to test the association between moral emotions and moral judgment. Personal moral dilemmas and judgments concern the appropriateness of personal moral violations (Greene et al., 2004). The footbridge dilemma is an example of a personal dilemma (Thomson, 1986). A trolley is racing down a track towards five workmen on the track who will be killed if nothing is done to the trolley. You and a large stranger are standing in between the trolley and the five workmen. The only way to save the five people is to push the stranger next to you onto the track to stop the oncoming trolley but he will die in the process. Most people would not push the stranger onto the track (Greene et al., 2001). Not pushing the stranger is a deontological response (do not kill innocents), whereas pushing the stranger is a utilitarian response (greatest good for greatest number). In Choe and Min's study (2011), it was concluded that disgust propensity had a negative correlation to utilitarian judgment, while trait anger had correlated positively to utilitarian judgment. They had a variety of personal moral scenarios that were randomised and given to the participants, who were asked to choose an emotion that they felt. In order to have a better understanding ... • 6. Victor Frankenstein Monster Essay In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein creates a creature, stronger and better than humans in every way except his looks. After Frankenstein abandons him, the Creature meets the De Lacey's, a nice little family that indirectly teach him how to read and write. In truth, the Creature only becomes a monster after the hatred that Felix, one of the De Lacey's, shows him. Before, he had done nothing wrong, but afterwards, all he did was fall down a slippery slope. When the Creature first started living near the De Lacey's, he was innately good and humble. He believed that they were greater than him and could not understand why anybody would look as sad as the De Lacey's seemed. All he wanted to do was make life better for them,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the De Lacey's were such superior beings, the Creature believed that all influence that would come from them would be positive and greatly help him to develop and become accepted by all humans. The Creature is innately good and so he spends all of his time dreaming about how he would, "first win their favor, and afterwards their love." The De Lacey's are the Creature's first step into being accepted by all humans, and all he can think about is being affected by them to become more like them in order to finally be regarded as a human and live happily. The Creature was so innately pure when he first moved in near the De Lacey's house that he could not possibly conceive man 's idea of doing evil. The Creature could not believe that man, as amazing as it is, could feel something as disgusting as revenge. He believed that there was no way that someone could be driven to such an extent that they would feel the need to kill someone else. "These wonderful narrations inspired me with strange feelings. Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious and base? He appeared at one time a mere scion of the evil principle, and at another as all that can be conceived of noble and godlike. To be a great and virtuous man appeared the highest honour that can befall a sensitive being; to be base and vicious, as many on record have been, appeared the lowest degradation, a condition more abject than that of the blind mole or harmless worm. ... • 7. The Theory Of Moral Reasoning he tension between reason and emotion in the human psyche has intrigued philosophers and psychologists for centuries. Under this theme, moral psychologists have investigated the roles of reason and emotion in making moral judgements, which, in the context of moral dilemmas, involves evaluating the acceptability of an action, given the virtues held by a specific culture (Haidt, 2001). Moral reasoning involves the conscious, effortful, and controllable mental manipulation of information, while moral emotions involve spontaneous, affectively charged judgements that lack conscious reasoning (Haidt, 2001). While earlier rationalist approaches argued that moral reasoning formed the basis of our moral judgements (Kohlberg, 1981), more recent approaches, such as Haidt's (2001) Social Intuitionist Model, emphasise the role of affective processes, arguing that reasoned judgements are rare, and that most examples of reasoning are simply post–hoc rationalisations of emotionally grounded judgements. The dual–process model (DPM) (Greene, Nystrom, Engell, Darley, & Cohen, 2004) consolidates these two approaches, proposing that reason and emotion are distinct and equally important processes, which are elicited to different extents by particular features of moral situations, competing to form the final moral judgement. Under this model, Greene et al. (2004) made a key distinction between "personal" and "impersonal" moral dilemmas. In the Trolley Dilemma, a runaway trolley will kill five men ... • 8. Homosexuality And Stereotypes "In almost all societies, people identify a group of sexual actors as disgusting or pathological, contrasting them with "normal" or "pure" sexual actors (prominently including the people themselves and their own groups)" (Nussbaum, 17). This allows for the politics of disgust, to play a key role in stating what society defines as normal or obscure. If an individual does not fit the norm in society, they will automatically get stereotyped. An example stated in the article depicted societies to state that Jews are "slimy" and "similar to maggots"(Nusssbaum, 16). Different locations are also found to rely upon the politics of disgust depending on how sanitary they are deemed to be; Cameron states that acts that are deemed as disgusting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A big aspect to obscenity is harm, but in obscenity, harm cannot be 100 percent prevented just like politics of disgust cannot be 100 percent changed. An example of this is child pornography, "Obscenity is to be distinguished sharply from child pornography, which is prohibited because children are harmed in its production and the harm cannot be effectively prevented so long as there is a profitable market for its products" (Koppelman, 1637). Obscenity, like politics of disgust plays an important role in law. Acts of obscenity do not mean that "the law should police what we feel" (Koppelman, 1639), just like society should not tell individuals what is disgusting or unlawful. Another way that it cannot be controlled is due to self–centeredness, "The first sort of objectification will here be called "self–centeredness." • 9. Frankenstein Vs. The Monster Essays Frankenstein Vs. The Monster At this point in the novel, I sympathize with the monster even though he has become a terrible person. As his creator, Victor Frankenstein should have cared for the monster despite his disgusting appearance. Frankenstein failed to provide the monster with any type of parental guidance and instead ran away from his responsibilities. In the first few hours of his birth, the monster is faced with rejection, even from his creator. If Frankenstein would have guided and nurtured him, then the monster would have never sought revenge on Frankenstein and his family. However, I sympathize mostly with the monster because he is no the one to blame. I believe with most instances that the parent is the one to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the monster would have encountered a family in which the husband was an abusive drunk and the wife beat her children, Frankenstein would have evolved into a different person. The monster is hated by every person he encounters. Frankenstein calls his creation a horrible disaster, which leaves a mark on the monster. The creator leaves him for dead and does not care what happens to the monster. The monster had to learn things by himself like the effects of fire and hunger. The monster learns that fire causes heat but learns that it can burn him sticking his hand in the fire. A good parent will teach a child things about nature and will nurture the child. A good parent will also teach a child the difference between right and wrong. However, Frankenstein leaves his creation for dead and wishes death upon the monster. On the other hand, I need to show some sympathy to Frankenstein and place some of the blame on the monster. The monster learned much from the time Frankenstein left him in the apartment. The monster kills the boy out of pure revenge against Frankenstein. The monster is disgusted at human nature because of all the killing that occurs between us, yet he still goes ahead and does it himself. He contradicts himself and is a hypocrite. In his second encounter with a human, the monster enters a home of a shepherd, who with one look at him, runs away in fear and disgust. The monster then enters a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Behavioral Avoidance Of People With Facial Disfigurement INTRODUCTION The authors of this paper are interested in the psychological basis of the behavioural avoidance of people with facial disfigurement. Specifically, they are interested in how people respond to individuals with facial birth marks. Individuals with issues such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, cleft palates, facial birth marks, and other facial lesions, have all reported being avoided by others. Such avoidance can occur in the spheres of social relationships, employment opportunities, as well as within health and education settings. Thus it is clear that facial disfigurement can significantly impact upon a person 's life. It has been suggested that the avoidance of people with facial disfigurement is due to the disfigurement... The study set out to test responses to confederates feigning "real" disease signs (influenza), "false alarms" (birthmarks), and to a healthy control. Participants were asked to imitate tasks performed by confederates who were shown in video clips. The imitation involved props, and participants were requested to perform the imitation while they watched the confederate perform the action via video. There were 3 different props: towel, harmonica, snorkel mask. In regards to prop use, there were 5 levels of usage: no contact, contact with hand, contact with head, contact with face, contact with mouth. And the 5 levels of contact were carried out across all 'disease conditions '. The experiment was conducted in a small room with a table upon which the props were located in boxes, there was also a TV which played the videos of confederates, and video recording equipment. T–shirts which were worn by the confederates were strategically placed in the room so as to give the impression that the confederate had just been there. • 11. The Nature And Moral Significance Of Disgust What is one vital concept that drives the existence of humans in society? Every moment of every day humans experience a phenomenon that has grasped the interest of psychologists and philosophers alike. This perplexing notion is the manifestation of emotions. There are hundreds of emotions that one can experience, but one in particular has caused a debate. The emotion of disgust has induced a plethora of theories attempting to explain the following normative question: Should disgust influence one's considered moral judgments? On one side, the advocates state that disgust influences a person's moral judgments. On the other hand, the skeptics doubt the power that disgust has on a one's considered moral judgments. A philosopher named Daniel Kelly reflects on this particular discourse in his novel "Yuck: The Nature and Moral Significance of Disgust" and defends the idea that disgust does not impact a person's considered moral judgments. In order to support this position, Kelly expresses his opposition to multiple theories, such as the Deep Wisdom Theory and Terror Management Theory, and utilizes the Entanglement Thesis and the Co –Opt Thesis to substantiate his claim. To begin, it is crucial to understand the controversy between the disgust advocates and disgust skeptics before presenting Kelly's own position on the issue. Overall, advocates propose that an emotion, such as disgust, is a mechanism adequate enough to direct one's moral evaluations. Disgust advocates support the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I never knew what teachers meant by saying that until they would start to get on my case about showing some affection to the girlfriend I had at that time. That was when I learned that "PDA" abbreviates Public Display of Affection and one of the first times I learned an American display rule. At the same time, I believe some manners may contribute to the display rules. Then, the topic of it is "unmanly" for a man to show their emotions. The other discussion about holding in anger opposed to expressing it. I believe there are limitations to how men show their emotions, but I do believe that men should be able to show their emotions. Also, anyone should be able express his or her emotions instead of holding it and letting it all come out all at once. First, Some of the American display rules are manners. As an example, when I was younger I was taught it is unacceptable to belch and not say excuse me at the table with even if the situation is accidental. My mother would poke arm or pinch my arm as punishment until I would say those majestic words to make my arm stop hurting. • 15. Analysis Of ' Anatomy Of Disgust ' By William Ian Miller Jennifer Street Dr. Nigel Joseph English 2260F October 15th, 2014 Dos and Don'ts: Insignificant and Significant Taboos in Western Society When people must interact in a public space, there are certain actions that are frowned upon and taught against from an early age. These unacceptable actions can be referred to as taboos. The word 'taboo' refers to something that is prohibited or restricted by social custom. Since the parameters of a taboo involve social custom, they differ from one society to the next. This essay will focus on taboos present in Western society. Three texts that discuss types of taboos in Western society will be referenced in this essay. Anatomy of Disgust by William Ian Miller discusses the taboos that make many people revolted and uncomfortable, and why. "Territories of Self" by Erving Goffman covers the reasons why we act the way we do in public. Thirdly, Sophie Watson's "The Disenchantments of Urban Encounters" reveals the reasoning behind ones' actions in public versus private spaces. These works all discuss the different types of human taboos and what makes them inappropriate, but fail to differentiate which are substantial enough to cause humanity to falter, and which are trivial enough to not offend all people. Theorists have focused on "serious" taboos such as abuse and unlawfulness, and have dismissed lesser versions as merely clashing behavior amongst different cultures. I will argue, however, that these milder insignificant taboos are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. The Use of Disgust Elicitors in Greek Love by Katherine Dunn The fundamental nature of the element of disgust is quite unsavory. Disgust is a relatively new term for a sensory experience that spans thousands of years, and has been studied throughout the millennium of Western history by philosophers and psychologists alike, to include Darwin, Hume, Hazlitt, and Freud (Miller, 1997). Psychologists generally disagree that disgust should be classified as an emotion; but rather the sensory processing of its elicitors is what constitutes an emotional response (Plantiga, 2009). The primary nature of the element of disgust is that it serves as a social function by differentiating between appropriate class behaviors and attitudes. While Darwin's etiology of the term was reserved to primarily describe offensive tastes, it has taken on very broad connotations since then, referring to anything that is extremely displeasing or revolting by means of all five senses (Miller, 1997). More importantly, the term plays an important role in moral judgment, as reflected by social and cultural norms and beliefs. This paper will briefly examine the use of disgust elicitors in the book "Geek Love," as well as the literary usage and connotations of modern day applications. In terms of literary practice, the physically disgusting is often described in visceral detail, specifically in adult fiction, and it almost always is used in a narrative context (Plantiga, 2009). However, it has not been used extensively in modern fiction works. The book "Geek Love" by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just like that if the author states that the genre of the book is supposed to be horror doesn't mean it is actually horror. Audience could view the novel or the text different ways. Certain genre has certain rules and criteria that they need to follow in order to create that genre. In "The Yellow Wallpaper" byCharlotte Perkins Gilman, she shows how the narrator who may or may not be Jane, moved into this big house with her husband John for few weeks. He is also her doctor, treating her for postpartum depression. She wasn't supposed to do anything or meet anyone. Since she was so bored, she started to look in depth in the wall paper, and noticed a lady, the monster trying to get out of the pattern. Toward the end of the story she got worst because her illness became the monster in the wall paper. Based on Carroll's text, Gilman's story does qualifies as horror because she used the discovery plot to set the story and explained how the monster from the wall and her illness was from a foreign place, and it was threatening ... • 20. Should Disgust Influence Our Considered Moral Judgments? This paper will examine the normative question "should disgust influence our considered moral judgments?" Daniel Kelly addresses in chapter five of his book, Yuck!, in two profoundly opposite views. These two views are between the moral disgust advocate who say, "yes" to the question and the moral disgust skeptics who say "no". We will discuss these two very different views in depth, what Kelly's views are, his account of the nature of disgust, and lastly, how he uses the Entanglement thesis and Co–opt thesis view to debunk the moral disgust advocates view on disgust. Before this paper can examine moral disgust in depth we must first define core disgust and how core disgust transformed into moral disgust. Core disgust is an emotional response of revulsion at the prospect of something that is considered to be offensive, distasteful or unpleasant. This emotional response was created to protect our bodies from harm and originally was developed to serve as an oral defense, a function to protect people from poisonous plants and disease avoidance. However core disgust has evolved along side with civilization and has now grown into elaborated disgust. Disgust is now not just protecting us from food, animals, or body products it has now evolved to include poor hygiene, sexual violations, body envelope violations, and any contact with death or dead bodies. Additional triggers of disgust are interpersonal contamination and socio–moral disgust, which is defined as disgust around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Cause Of Mental Shift In Shakespeare's Othello In Shakespeare's Othello, the shame that characters have towards themselves and the disgust that Othello has for himself cause Othello's mental shift in Act 3, Scene 3. It is the shame caused by the interracial relationships in the play and the disgust Othello has for himself because of his race that causes his mental shift. The existing and non–existing interracial relationships in the play cause shame in some characters which causes Othello's mental shift. In Deborah Cohen's seminar, Shame's History, she states, "What shames us has changed dramatically over time." This is true for interracial relationships. Desdemona's father shared the same mindset. He did not want his bloodline contaminated by Othello which is why he was against their relationship. This made Othello feel disgusted to be who he is. Also, all the offensive racial comments made to Othello made him feel disgusted by his own skin. For example, Brabantio states, "...To fall in love with what she feared to look upon"(I.III.116). His disgust for himself causes his mental shift by making him believeIago's lies more easily. When Iago begins to manipulate Othello, instead of thinking that what Iago is saying is highly unlikely, he listens and allows Iago's lies to poison his mind. When Iago says, "She did deceive her father, marrying you, And when she seemed to shake and fear your looks, She loved them most" (III.III.238–240), Othello does not question it because of the disgust he has for himself which leads to him believing everything that Iago says. This allows Iago to easily manipulate Othello into deciding to kill Desdemona. Othello's disgust also causes his mental shift by making him less confident in his relationship. • 28. Evolutionary Theories Of Human Behavior Before discussing this question it is important to understand how neurotransmission occurs. Firstly, the neuron impulse needs to be triggered, dopamine for example can be triggered by something a human finds pleasurable such as cigarettes or food. After the neuron is triggered it fires the impulse across the neuron releasing dopamine transmitters into the synaptic gap. From there, the neurotransmitter binds with specific receptor sites to activate the dopamine. Almost immediately after the human is filled with joy and pleasure. This explains how (especially in addicts) the site of things can cause pleasure and affect human behavior in a positive way. Historically disgust would have allowed human ancestors to survive long and produce strong offspring because they would avoid harmful or rancid food or animals. Because of this, similar genes would have been passed to the next generation. One case study that represents how disgust has become an acquired and evolutionary trait that explains human behavior is Fessler (2006). In this cases study Fessler hypothesized that disgust would help in keeping the potential fetus safe from harm. In order to best prove this 496 healthy pregnant women from ages 18 to 50 in an online survey were given different images and asked to rank them on the scale system of disgust. This study discovered that women in their first trimester largely scored higher on the level of disgust compared to that of women in the second and third trimester. Furthermore, when the study was controlled more greatly it was found that higher levels of sickness were in response to that of food. This study helps supports disgust being an evolutionary trait passed on by humans because it helps young offspring fight potential disease as well as assist in the reproduction of offspring for having a greater survival chance.Within biological psychology, one of the primary principle states that there are biological correlates on behavior. By this, there are genetically acquired behavioral traits such as hormones and neurotransmitters that explains why humans have particular behaviors. One case study that helps to prove this theory is newcomer et al 1999. In this study participants were broken up into three groups, group one given the highest amount of cortisol had tablets that were 160 mg of cortisol for four days. In these books I found that discipline and disgust are both used as tools of constructing and maintaining hierarchy, and I argue that those in power use disgust to discipline and punish the people under their control in order to maintain the hierarchies in which they possess power. Moreover, Chen, Li, and Gao's (2016) experiments based on the CAD theory found that Chinese people's angry about events which violated the moral foundations of harm depended on context, such as the modern and traditional social context. As days go by, he convinced her of being a male impersonator who was pretending to be a female impersonator at the same time. After a while, she became a Paris sensation being admired by her audience because of her talent, charisma, and skills in dance. This movie was full of nonverbal cues from the beginning to the end. Then Toddy arrives and sees Victoria, the woman he saw that same morning in the bar. When he entered, he sat at a table near her and ordered a coffee. As soon as he could, he approached her and kissed her hand as a sign of greeting and that it is a pleasure to meet her. They started talking and she invited him to eat with her. They talked about them and the food of the restaurant and now is when she comments that she has a cockroach in her purse and plans to put it in her salad to avoid paying the bill and leave, but he says that that would not work in a restaurant of prestige and class like that one. She ends up opening her purse and throwing the cockroach to the salad. At that moment, the waiter comes and asks if everything is fine and Toddy asks for more wine. When the waiter returns, the cockroach gets off and walks by her hand, she jumps from the chair, frightened and disgusted, and pushes the waiter causing a scandal for the other clients. The two complain about the restaurant service with the waiter and Toddy asks to see the manager. The manager comes and she explains the situation which ends up favoring her but not Toddy since he had to pay his own. In the end, another woman shouted when she felt the cockroach walk down his leg and at that moment, Toddy and Victoria took advantage and escaped without both paying one of the bills for what they had ... • 34. Analyzing Bruno Wicker's Perception Of Tort The sensation of disgust occurs when we are offended by something, so simply observing someone eating an unsavory meal with an expression of disgust can make us have the same sensation and expression as well. The observer knows to stay away from that particular meal. This incident raises the question of how we each understand this behavioral cue. A group of scientists led by Bruno Wicker questioned whether the same areas in the insula are both active during the experience of disgust and observing disgust in others. The authors suggested two kinds of hypotheses that could explain the activations in our brain as well as our ability to recognize and understand disgust in others. One kind is the "cold" hypothesis, which signifies the recognition of disgust through cognitive mechanisms that do not involve emotion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From these hypotheses, scientists predicted that observing disgust in another person should activate the same brain areas that become active when one experiences disgust on themselves. Previous studies have suggested that there is merit to their prediction. It has been found that the insula is activated when exposed to disgusting scents and during observations of disgusted expressions (Royet et al., 2003; Phillips et al., 1997). However, none of these studies examined if the same areas of the insula were active for both conditions in the same subjects. This was the first study to actually show that a common neural activation within the anterior insula was present when exposed to disgusting stimulants and observing disgusted facial ... The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas Samantha Clements ENG 125 February 18, 2013 The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas is to some people, a very disturbing story; but, it is nothing short of the truth when speaking of today's society. Can a city really exist where there is nothing but happiness forevermore? No, it cannot, not without consequences; as shown in Le Guin's story. Good vs. Evil is a definite underlying theme in The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas. The goodness and happiness in the city of Omelas comes only by the misery and sacrifice of an innocent child. Good cannot exist without evil. In this story, the child helps the people of Omelas measure their own happiness; because if the child in the cellar was not so... • 36. Moral Decision Making Is Not Independent Of Trait Anger Abstract Many have deliberated over the cognitive processes involved in morality. Despite moral cognition being a very unique process for each individual, there is far less research on the role of individual differences in moral judgments. It was predicted that one would find associations between certain traits; disgust propensity and trait anger, with authority agreeableness and utilitarian judgment. Participants were 596 University of Melbourne students, mean age 22.42 years. The data was collected from responses on a series of subscales in a questionnaire. There was a significant positive correlation between disgust propensity and authority agreeableness, suggesting that emotional states (intuition) can override and influence... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... No two people will have identical reasoning and intuition processes, which motivate their moral decisions or judgments. Thus, it is fundamental to study the influence of individual differences on the role of emotion, reason and intuition in moral decision–making. This in turn can tell us something about the cognitive processes and the way they differ from person to person. The present study is set out to consider how certain traits influence moral decision–making and how they interact with each other. The particular individual difference measurements focused on in this study include trait anger, disgust propensity, authority agreeableness and utilitarianism in moral judgments. Haidt (2001) has previously suggested that moral intuitions are largely dependant on emotions, with the use of intuition. Later, Graham et al., (2011) suggested a hypothetical model of five common moral foundations, one being authority. Previous research has discovered that when disgust propensity is decreased (the situation is manipulated to be cleansed or purified), participants found moral actions less wrong or severe (Schnall et al., 2008). More recent research by Horberg, Oveis, Keltner, and Cohen (2009), also found support for the claim that disgust predicts stronger condemnations of wrong actions or 'purity violations'. It is expected that there will be a positive correlation between disgust propensity and authority agreeableness. This would support the social intuitionism idea ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Humans ' Anger Me, And I Disgust Them Humans disgust me, and I disgust them. Humans are horrid creatures with their greed, hatred, and violence. They show no mercy towards other humans. Humans, to me, are pure evil. Though many would disagree because they don't appear to be capable of such obscenities. They don't look like someone who can do evil. They don't look like monsters. That's really all it is. Humans don't look like the disgusting, evil creatures that they are. I look exactly how a human acts: disgusting and evil; that is why humans despise me. I look like some worthless, disgusting creature that should be left to rot, even though it should be those humans, who should be suffering with pain and loneliness, not I. I didn't always look like this: a furry creature, with snaggle teeth and long, sharp claws. I used to be a boy, a small one. I had short, straight brown hair, and big brown eyes. I was quite short, compared to the other boys in my village, and I was rather skinny too. My mother told me to stop comparing myself to them. "You are handsome the way you are," she would say. My mother loved me. She cared for me with all her might. Even after I was cursed to look like a beast. I went wandering out into the woods, and a witch found me. I don't even remember the encounter anymore. All I remember was the witch yelling at me, and then speaking in a tongue that I don't know. I remember seeing a bright green light pummel towards me, and I remember falling to the ground. When I awoke, I immediately knew ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Summary Of Kazuo Nussbaum's From Disgust To Humanity After reading Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, I now read the 'human' in 'human subjects' as anyone who is capable of exhibiting emotions and thoughts that are specific to the human experience. Nussbaum's philosophical work, From Disgust To Humanity, has enhanced my understanding of the concept that needs to be incorporated into our mode of thinking, in order to help us see one another as human; this component is imagination. I have come to learn that imaginative attunement encompasses complexities in terms of its conditions and the role it plays in respecting individuals, regardless of their gender or racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and religious background. Never Let Me Go centers on the lives of human clones who are not considered 'human' because of their genetic upbringing; Madame is one of the characters who shares this belief, yet she performs acts that would activate the imagination of those who are repulsed by the human–like clones. The ability to imagine encourages people to view others as agents of emotion and reason; this relationship, in turn, creates space for respect and even empathy to be directed towards these beings on behalf of those with imaginative attunement. In From Disgust To Humanity, the philosopher argues that disgust has influenced the creation of numerous policies that limit equality for certain populations. She makes the claim that "a politics of humanity" would allow for individuals to empathize with others or at least grant them the tools to understand the perspective of others, because of respect, imagination and curiosity. The most fascinating part of this relationship is the "politics of humanity" which Nussbaum speaks of, cannot operate sufficiently with respect alone– "respect is politically incomplete without imagination" (Nussbaum xix/xvii). With that being said, imaginative attunement has become not only necessary in my comprehension of what it means to be human, but also my capacity to respect the identities of people whom I may perceive as different from my own. The human–like clones in Never Let Me Go fall under this category; despite being genetically engineered into being, I believe that they are capable of living with the emotions and thoughts that are ... • 39. The Anxiety Of Eating Disorders Anger and sadness are both common emotions when dealing with not only mental illness but specifically eating disorders. Both are easy to identify however, most people don't realize disgust is a core emotion, best described as a feeling of intense aversion. Like any bodily system, the disgust emotional response can fail and lead to severe health problems. Researchers have only recently begun to recognize the attitude of disgust and how it plays a part in the vast majority of of mental illnesses, including obsessive–compulsive disorder, phobias and depression. While disgust does play a role in mental illness, it mainly occupies eating disorders such as restrictive eaters, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder. With these eating disorders the emotion of disgust is altered and is either heightened or abnormally suppressed. In general, it is assumed that eating disorders stem from depression or anxiety however disgust is an underlying cause of eating disorders and solving this problem will help lead to a cure for eating disorders. (Schienle, Phillips, Houben, Ekman) Disgust is classified as a "food based emotion" and was developed as an evolutionary response in order to forbid ingestion of harmful contents. (Ekman) "Disgust has long been considered a powerful way of protecting us from things that could harm us or make us sick. For instance, we find rotting fruits, or meat crawling with maggots disgusting, triggering avoidance of such food products. Disgust, thus, is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Blur looked at the corner, and there she saw a few buckets of water, a gallon of soap, and a few mops.
