Hospice vs. Hospitalization
Everyone in this room is going to die at some point and statistically speaking it is more than likely
half of this room will die from a terminal illness. Most often patients with a terminal disease end up
living their last days in the hospital. Hospice is an alternative to institutional death, and one that
provides a holistic approach to improve the quality of life in patient's final days of living. Working
as a volunteer for hospice I have witnessed the quality of care that is provided and the serenity it can
bring to a family. Hospitalization and hospice care provide different services. It is important that
people understand the differences between hospitalization and hospice care, so that as an individual

So who pays? The cost of both hospitalization and hospice care are usually paid for through private
insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or other forms of payment. Being covered by Medicare has only
very recently been inducted by congress, and still remains very limited. The results of the National
Hospice Study show positive evidence of Hospice home care costs to be 44 per cent less than
hospital based cost, an average of $95 versus $66 a day, respectively. That is close to a grand a
month. Hospice care tends to be less expensive than hospitalization because there is no use of high–
cost life–saving equipment, and also because friends and family can act as caregivers, reducing the
cost of healthcare professionals. Who is involved when it comes to caregivers? According to the
American Cancer Society, one of the key differences between hospitalization and hospice care is
that family and friends provide the majority of care. Hospice volunteers work as much with the
family as with the patient. They may teach family members how to change dressings, remove a
catheter, administer medicine, use bed pans, use a hospital bed, or assist in the dying in other ways.
In a hospital setting, doctors, nurses and other healthcare specialists provide the majority of care.
The hospice team of professional consists of a doctor, who serves as a medical director, nurses who

Hospice Nurse Role
Hospice is a concept of care that is based on the belief that meaningful living is achievable during a
terminal illness that is free of interventions that prolong physiologic dying. The role of a hospice
nurse is to take on a holistic approach to patient care that involves a careful evaluation of not only
physical problems but also the psychosocial and spiritual dimensions of the patient and the patient's
family (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014). The hospice nurse is culturally aware and sensitive in their
approach to communication that respects beliefs, attitudes, and values of the patient and family
about end–of–life care. The hospice nurse also provides support to families even after the death of
the patient (Nies & McEwen, 2015).
The hospice nurse also educates family members about the physical symptoms of terminal illness
such as dyspnea, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mrs. Keith practiced hospice nursing for over 10 years. Mrs. Keith became a hospice nurse because
her mother was dying and choosing to put her on hospice was the best decision she has ever made.
Although retired, Mrs. Keith still volunteers time to time to sit with patients. Mrs. Keith stated,
You walk with families, with all the issues families may have; you walk with them, through their
fears and anger, through love, laughter, and tears. You see great healing and forgiveness at times. A
healing that traditional medicine may not understand. But it is the healing a medicine cannot touch.
It is the healing of love and compassion and presence. It is our presence, love, and compassion, as
patients and families journey, step by step, closer and closer to saying goodbye to each other.

Children in Hospice
Research suggests that every year there are between 100,000 to 150,000 children born in the United
States with a genetic disorder or defect. This represents approximately 20% of infant deaths each
year. However, many of these children live to age well beyond the expectation, and some are
enrolled in hospice. According to Armstrong–Daily and Zarbock (2001), "The concept of hospice
today is applied to patients who are traveling through the final stages of their lives–in effect seeking
shelter and comfort." Hence, the main focus of this program is to prepare families for the death of a
loved one. Although accepting these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even when hospitalized, parents must be prepared to fight for the right of their child to live because
many medical professionals give the impression that any effort would be useless. Many parents are
even willing to care for the child within the home but there are no resources available to assist with
care other than nursing. This should be a key area for concern as the patient is expected to live six
months in most cases and it is more than enough time to prepare for the child's death. When that
time has passed and the child is still progressing, one is only left to wonder the next step. At this
point, time spent creating memories with family should be top priority.
It is my recommendation that the health care community implement a network of resources for
parents who are not willing to accept and grieve but are willing to accept and fight to prolong the
life of their child. Resources and information should be readily available to assist with any type of
services that would bring relief for situations ranging from housing to therapy. Medical
professionals also should be required to take a course in patient relations giving some insight into
the emotional turmoil that many parents experience. This probably would change some parent's
perception of the medical profession because discretion and empathy would be used when providing
information about the child's condition. Any feelings of hopelessness may be eliminated and
replaced with feelings of relief

The Care Of Hospice Care
In recent years, Hospice care has risen to popularity and is being widely used among many
terminally – ill patients and their families. Hospice care supports patients and their families
emotionally and physically through the dying process. Imagine being told that you have a terminal
disease and that you have a limited amount of time before you die. This stress and hopelessness can
be relieved by a hospice care team, that would be there for you and your family. With hospice care,
both the patient and caregiver would be provided with support and optimal care. The goal of this
paper is to evaluate caregivers' perceptions and experiences concerning the care of a terminally ill
loved one, and to compare the satisfaction of patients and or caregivers with and without access to
hospice care programs.
Introduction The goal of hospice is neither to prolong life nor to hasten the dying process, but rather,
hospice focuses on comfort not curing. It helps to maximize patients' quality of life as they travel
along this last journey. Hospice care may offer several advantages over traditional, hospital–based
care for people with terminal illnesses. It can be delivered in a patient's home, allowing death to take
place in the their own home, it may also optimize the relief of pain, increase patients' and carers
satisfaction, whilst allowing them to die in peace, comfort and dignity.
Caring for a patient that is terminally ill can be a burden on any family. Caregivers are usually

Hospice Utilization
Hospice Utilization in the Workplace
Hospice and palliative care are still new concepts to many that come into the facility. While the
process and the goals of palliative and hospice care can be described to the patients and family
members, the terminology and interpretation may be challenged by their previous beliefs and
ideologies. However, after careful counseling and education, many family members agree to
undergo hospice or palliative care at the appropriate time. Considering that five years ago, hospice
utilization in the workplace was scarce in comparison to today where there is an entire unit devoted
to promoting palliative and hospice care, it can be said that these new forms of care are becoming
accepted practices with favorable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What was once believed to be a form of neglect has resulted in a change in practice with the idea
that doing less is more. Culture is an important factor in how care is rendered and thus, the
limitations of palliative and hospice care lie within the desires of the family and patients. A thorough
understanding of our surrounding demographics helps to ensure a seamless approach to providing
care without bias or imposition of ones beliefs. However, just as with all things, providing care for
the sick and comforting the dying should be rendered in moderation as to prevent the effects of burn
out. Likewise, the same effects occur in the caregivers who sacrifice their responsibilities in order to
care for their love ones. Finally, and with some closing thoughts, the writer wishes to express with
gratitude the benefit of having taken this course to better understand oneself and others in the realm
of healthcare. The lessons learned throughout have expanded this writer's knowledge and
understanding of the human desire to make a connection through communication, emotion,
compassion, and spiritually – the platform from which this writer wishes to continue seeking further

Rockland Hospice Case
Looking at United Hospice of Rockland's, UHR, digital face, I believe that their website and
Facebook are their most prominent pieces. The time when a family decides that hospice care is the
best option for their loved one to receive the end of life quality care that they deserve, the process
should be as calm and easy as possible. UHR's website is one that provides family members with the
resources they need to make the transition to hospice care easy. What they do nicely, I believe is that
while fundraising is an essential part of their organization, it is not something that current or recently
deceased patient family members need to be concerned with at the moment. While listed on the

Parents took care of their children their whole life and it can be difficult for the children to admit

this and help make families feel closer to the individuals taking care of their loved ones is to
spotlight the different nurses, caregivers and volunteers on the Facebook page. While it may not be
one of the individuals that ultimately take care of their loved ones, it will help families put a name to
the faces of the people who will help ease the pain over the coming months, days and

Benefits Of A Hospice Nurse
Registered Nursing takes skilled and hard working people. There are many jobs in the Nursing field.
To name a few, there are: Hospice Nurses, Long Term Care Facility Nurses, ER Nurses, Pediatric
Nurses, Geriatric Nurses, Acute Care Nurses, etc. Hospice Nurses are jobs taken by people that are
strong hearted and strong willed. I had an experience with a Hospice Nurse in a job shadow. I went
to the houses of her patients instead of a facility. We went to three different houses to take care of
her assigned residents. Her patients loved her very much and she did her job with love and care.
Three days after my experience with her, one of her residents passed away. They had a great patient
and nurse relationship. She was filled with sadness and I also felt sad for the resident's family and
other caregivers that cared for him. Hospice patients are only said to live about six months or less.
Not all residents pass away after six months, some live longer. Hospice care is given to patients that
are dying, but hospice can also go on pause because the patient becomes more independent. The job
of hospice nurses is to take care of the resident nearing the time of death, not to cure their diseases.
My job shadow said that it is always sad when her patients go, but she knows that they are not
suffering like they were when they were living. The National Hospice and Palliative Care
Organization states, "Hospice care professionals and volunteers provide services that address all of

The first stage is shock and denial. Patients going through this often are in disbelief and life thinking
"Life goes on." The second stage is Anger and Depression. Patients often go through feelings of
resentfulness, bitterness, guilt, blaming, and asking "Why." Release and Honor is the third step. At
this point, patients are emotionally released, they feel a sense of peace, and begin to settle in the
thought. The final stage of the grieving process is Return to love. Patients accept and enjoy life, they
feel a love for living, and have loving thoughts and feelings. Although there are stages in grieving

Hospice : A Philosophy Of Care
Hospice:
Hospice is a philosophy of care. It treats the person rather than the disease and focuses on quality of
life. It surrounds the patient and family with a team consisting of professionals who not only address
physical distress, but emotional and spiritual issues as well. Hospice care is patient–centered
because the needs of the patient and family drive the activities of the hospice team.
1. There are many different kinds of hospice settings. What kinds of Hospice services are available
in Omaha? Choose a specific home based hospice service and an inpatient hospice setting. What
does each of these offer in terms of patient care?
Pathways to Compassion Hospice provide care for patients mainly in their own home settings. Their
primary goal is to well–manage pain and symptoms while keeping comfortability.
Hospice House–The Josie Harper Residence offers inpatient and routine hospice care. It provides
necessary individual terminally ill care that could be overwhelming and difficult to provide in the
home. The tentative care received by residents living with terminal illnesses, families, and friends is
full of compassionate and comfort.
2. Who makes up the hospice team and what are their responsibilities?
As described by Batchelor (2010), hospice team and responsibilities are as follow:
Family member: A primary caregiver and assist with decisions making for the patient.
Nurses: Assist the patients and families to cope with the end–of–life process such as assessing and

The Treatment Of Hospice And Palliative Care
According to Cynthia R., of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, "Medical technology has been
progressing in leaps and bounds since the second half of the 20th century" (1). This advancement is
the result of ongoing studies of medical researchers, bringing about new curative treatments for a
variety of diseases. Many of these are extending the lives and increasing comfort of those that are
terminally ill. However, amongst the improvements in medical treatments available, they have
become the default method of practice even for patients that will not ultimately overcome their
condition. When given a diagnosis, patients are often thrust into a variety of treatments by health
care providers. However, when that illness is no longer treatable to the extent that the patient will be
cured, patients are often kept in the same realm of curative treatments despite their preferences.
Hospice and palliative care is a specialized form of medical care that provides terminally ill patients
(and their families) with pain management, family planning, and a focus on spiritual and emotional
well being in the last days of a patients life, outside of a hospital environment. Hospice and
palliative care does not mean that one is necessarily needing to be at an imminent stage before
death. Rather, it is the ability of patients with terminal illnesses to receive pain management and
care in order to live out the rest of their lives comfortably. Palliative care is said to have,

Hospice Care Goal
Hospice care is a team of health care providers who take care of patients who are in the last stages of
a serious illness (1). For example, patients with cancer, HIV infection, heart disease, dementia,
kidney failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and some neurological disorders (2). This
care can be provided by people other than health care providers, it can be done by patient's family
members (2).
The goal of a hospice care is not to find a cure for the disease, however, it aims to give a good
quality of life for patients who suffer from terminal illness by medical therapy, emotional support
and make them feel comfortable (3).

When a person is diagnosed with a terminally illness and is given an expectancy of six months or

family will turn to hospice care. The meaning of hospice is to provide care to a person who is
terminally ill. Hospice does not speed up or postpone death. Hospice is a type of care that provides
services to improve the quality of life for the patient and family. Hospice exists in the hope and
belief that, through proper care and the encouragement of a caring and sensitive team, patients and
their families may be free to achieve some level of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is

Essay about Hospice Programs
Hospice Programs
Hospice Programs; A Dignified Death
In the Middle Ages, hospice was a place where sick or weary travelers would stay while a long
journey. Today hospice services are available to people who can no longer benefit from curative
treatments. As the health care environment is changing at pace that few could have predicted,
hospice is very much part of that change (Stair, 1998).
For many years our society and the media has placed an image of death in our heads, of a painful
experience, one that is feared by everyone. Although death can be emotionally draining, also can be
an uplifting experience. Providing comfort and love and the assurance that life will continue, is truly
the biggest gift. Hospices are designated to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

When David died she carried on with this idea but she knew she would have to train as a doctor to

During her time training as a doctor she worked at a hospice, this was

very good experience because she could talk to real people with real problems of dying. She realised
that the last few weeks of a person's life could be the most important.
It was time for her ideas to be put into practise in 1959. She put her ideas on paper for a centre for
the dying. She knew what she wanted to cal it: St Christopher's Hospice. She chose the name

(meaning to show appreciation now and not at my funeral). I looked in disarray. She wanted to show
her appreciation to me, acknowledging how great of a nurse I was to our patients and families and
how I show true compassion. On an evening in July, I had the opportunity to take care of Mrs. X
who was minimally responsive the time she made it to my unit. She had been battling an illness for
years and it had begun to take her to her final destination. Mrs. X was transferred from an ICU unit

Hospice And End Of Life Care
Hospice and End of Life Care
What is Hospice? Hospice is compassionate care provided to patients facing terminal illness or
illness for which there is no cure. These patients are diagnosed with an illness from which they will
never recover and usually have a life prognosis of six months or less (Hospice Foundation of
America, 2014). The goal of hospice care is improving quality of life and managing the symptoms
of disease and the dying process. The care hospice offers is focused on pain management and
emotional and spiritual support for both the patient and family (National Hospice and Palliative Care
Organization, 2012). Hospice care can be provided in many different settings, often the patient's
own home. Hospice care can also be provided in hospitals, nursing homes, long–term care facilities
and free–standing hospice centers and is available to patients of all ages (NHPCO, 2012). A patient
receiving care in a hospice program has a team of healthcare individuals that can consist of the
patients own physician, nurses, home health aides, clergy, social workers, and speech and physical
therapists (NHPCO, 2012). Usually, a care plan is developed by the hospice team and care of the
patient is provided by family members with the support of the hospice staff (NHPCO, 2012). Nurses
make regular visits to the patient and family and are on call 24/7. Once enrolled in a hospice
program hospice covers everything that will be needed to care for you, from medications to manage
pain to

The Pros And Cons Of Hospice Nursing
Usually, the majority of aging people spend most of their time in nursing homes where they receive
specialized treatment and care that is not available in the normal home setting. What is more, the
aging individuals give each other company as they interact in serene and supportive environments
that promote their peace of mind. A person considering to pursue a profession in hospice nursing
care should be equipped with a set of skills and knowledge base, aside from having the necessary
passion that would help him/her in navigating through various hurdles. One of the most significant
disadvantages of the career is that the professionals are obliged to provide care to the terminally ill;
and therefore, it becomes sensitive to extend care aimed at providing emotional and spiritual
support. This paper explores the form and the nature of hospice nursing. Hospice care features as a

Usually, patients with AIDS, stroke, lung disease, multiple sclerosis, and liver disease are eligible
for the hospice care (Connor, 2017). Notably, the aim of this kind of care is not to pursue the
complete healing of the patient, but to offer a specialized kind of treatment reduces pain and other
health complications as the patients await to succumb to the conditions of their health. To receive
Medicare cover while under hospice care, an individual should belong to Medicare Part A (Connor,
2017). In addition, a qualified physician must ascertain that the individual under consideration is
suffering from a terminal illness. Connor (2017) argues that for a patient to qualify for hospice care,
he or she should be in possession of a 6 months prognosis or less provided that the disease is
following a normal course. In this regard, it is apparent that in order to receive hospice care, a
patient must be terminally

Hospice Care Thesis
Thesis Palliative/Hospice Care: Necessity or Extension of Healthcare: a topic chosen to obtain
clarity of services, while questioning who is benefiting, patients or the healthcare system.
I. Introduction: The Historical Roots of Hospice
In the 8th century, B.C. the Homeric times, all Greeks without exception were regarded as being
under the protection of Zeus Xenios, the god of strangers and supplicants. A wanderer would be
treated as a guest and offered food, shelter, clothing, and gifts. Violation of the duties of hospitality
were likely to provoke the wrath from the gods. (Forman and Kitzes, et al 2003). Patients who were
not cured by an itinerant physician could be cared for at a temple of Aesculapius, the god of ... Show

The medical regime, health care organizations and the public are aware of these end–of–life issues,
therefore must prioritize it's needs. The American Medical Association and the Institute of Medicine
foundation has devoted millions of dollars to public education on this issue through the Last Acts
initiative. (Forman and Kitzes, et al 2003).
This is one reason so many patients enter hospice only in the last days of life. A more reasonable
approach would be to have a patient begin Palliative/Hospice care while receiving curative care. The
Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is about to embark on a project to evaluate
whether providing hospice services earlier in an illness along with curative care, improves quality of
life for patients while reducing Medicare spending.
If Palliative/Hospice care were to be provided soon after a terminal diagnosis, there would be more
hospice care would be more timely. About a third of hospice patients die within seven days of
admission to a Palliative/Hospice program. This short length of stay compromises the quality of care
that hospice offers.

Hospice care main goal is to provide comfort then treating the person disease. Normally patients that
live in hospice only have 6 months to live. Hospice also gives control to the patient in methods of
their own death. Many patients will rather take a liquid substance that will slowly put them to rest,
while others will have alternative plans on how they want to deal with their last stages of life.
Hospice is also great at giving the patient many options when there trying to make decision on their

In recent years, Hospice care have risen to popularity and is being widely used among many
terminally – ill patients and their families. This is evident in a report from the National Hospice and
Palliative Care Organization, "In 2014, an estimated 1.6million – 1.7 million patients received
services from Hospice" (NHPCO, 2015). It is seen that many people uses Hospice care which means
that many deaths are also under the care of a Hospice program, therefore, patients and families
satisfaction is a crucial factor in assessing the quality of Hospice care and how to make
improvement for future services. Thus, I decided to conduct a research on patient and/or caregivers
satisfaction that received care from hospice programs.
The purpose of hospice is to effectively provide palliative care to terminally ill patients and their
families, it is available to any age, religion or race. According to the National Hospice and Palliative
Care Organization, "hospice provides expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and
spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes Support is provided to the
patient's loved ones as well" (NHPCO, 2015). In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

status. This research will help give nurses a stronger knowledge base of characteristics and
advantage of hospice care. In addition, nurses will be able to explain the advantages of Hospice
programs to more of their patients, thus, they will be able to educate and encourage more families to
choose hospice care. Not only will it help the patient live out a comfortable life it will also help the

Hospice Care LaToya L. Howard HCS/212 January 1, 2013 Denise Brown
I first heard about hospice from a co–worker a few years ago when that co–worker was preparing to
check her mother in hospice and she was in her forties. As she discussed with me her mother had a
drug addiction problem her entire life. At that time I had never heard about hospice and I became
interested in learning more about it. "Hospice is a special concept of care designed to provide
comfort and support to patients and their families. Patients are referred to hospice when life

In the article it was stated in 2005, about 82% of people who were receiving hospice care were
white and about 7% identified themselves were black. There are more female patients who receive
hospice care than male according to this article stated above. I can remember over the years, even
today it has been known that women life span is longer than males and this information I found
surprised me a bit. Most of the patients who receive hospice care are elderly patients as I mentioned
before. On web site www.nhpco.org it states that the percentage of patient ethnicity since 2010 was
94% of non–Hispanic or Latino origin and 5.7% were Hispanic or Latino origin who received
hospice care. The overall purpose of the hospice program is to provide comfort and care to enable
the patient to enjoy their last days to the fullest. Hospice is not an organization to cure patients but to
make their life a little more easily. Their volunteers are there in support not only for the patient but
the patient's family. Arnold, R (2012) states depending on the patients religious or spiritual beliefs;
hospice will provide the patient with the correct support team to allow the patient to be in a familiar
setting. In addition to this, there are aides to help the patient with the patient needs such as getting
out of bed, bathing, and dressing. My main reason for choosing to research information regarding
this agency is because I knew a previous co–worker whose mom was checked into hospice care at a

Death has a devastating impact, whether it is expected or sudden. The term end of life (EOL) is used
interchangeably with no concise meaning defined. The lack of clarity of the term has resulted in
confusion for patients, families and healthcare providers. A variety of interventions has been
embraced to meet the physical needs of the patient, and as well as, the emotional/ psychological
needs of their loved one. The literatures have shown that promotion of pain management can lead to
a reduction in stress, thus providing for effective coping mechanisms, and spiritual comfort for the
patients when a forthcoming death is near. It is important for healthcare providers to be

Palliative care was designed as a state of the art measure that alleviated suffering in the patents
which allows for better communication to be transpired between the health care team that will
alleviate strains for the healthcare members. Clinicians need to be more involved and advocate for
consultation based upon identifiable triggers requiring consultation, and elicits feedback from staff
about certain interventions. The clinicians acting as an advocate for the patients must remain
knowledgeable in recognizing the shift in the patient's course that indicates the need for palliative
care and communicate poor prognoses and outcomes with the patients, loved ones, and offer
palliative care when death is prominent. Despite the many barriers identified here, clinician must be
champion for palliative care on both hospital, unit, and as well as, on the level of the patient. (Perrin

Conclusion
Regardless of the benefits of palliative care, many problems remain in the execution of palliative

education that is supported by evidence remains the key to rendering the effectiveness with better

Persuasive Essay On Hospice Care
Many terminally–ill patients give up hope when treatments are no longer available to help them and
hospice care is given to them as an option. However, hospice care has proven itself to provide the
best quality care for the last six months of the dying. The purpose of hospice is to provide the best
care for terminally–ill patients at the end stage of their lives. Hospice offer services to support too
many aspects a patient's life such as medical, legal, spiritual care. Hospice includes art therapists,
music therapists, and certified chaplains on the palliative team.
The first hospice care was established in 1974. A hospice must make physician, nursing, drugs, and
medical supply services available 24/7. It must have social workers and counseling services
available to the patient and the family. Hospice also provides therapy and homemaker services when
needed in order to be qualified under Medicare certification. Hospice is a combination of special
services for terminal ill patients. Beside the medical service, hospice care also supports patients and
family psychologically and spiritually to put their emotional suffering at ease. The psychological
suffering can weight more than physical suffering. Many terminal ill patients cannot accept the bad
news and living under emotional distress. Certified chaplains can work with people from different
religions, they focus on the world–view of the patient and family. Using patient personal goal as the
measurement, chaplains are the

Hospice And Palliative Care Center
Executive Summary During the summer of 2015 semester I had the opportunity to intern with
Hospice & Palliative Care Center located in Winston–Salem, North Carolina. Hospice and Palliative
Care Center is an organization that stands behind its mission to provide compassionate care for those
with a life–limiting illness, and their families, through quality medical, emotional, spiritual and
social support (Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 2015). Hospice and Palliative Care Center is a
place where patients can spend their last days of life with dignity. Regardless of inability to finance
medical treatment no patient is ever turned away, unless he or she does not meet the requirements
for hospice care. The employees are dedicated and faithful in applying the standards of excellence
which consists of commitment, compassion, competence, community and creativity. One of my
goals as an intern was to observe, implement and demonstrate the standards of excellence. My
primary tasks as an intern were to learn and understand the conduction and operation of human
resource, finance and the compliance departments in healthcare management. Over the course of the
semester I participated in numerous meetings within the administrative and clinical departments,
alongside the CEO, Vice President, interdisciplinary teams, nurses, and nurse's assistant, to discuss
the future of healthcare and the importance of quality of care for the patients. In addition, I

Hospice Is A Good Option For Them
If a patient does not have the ability to exercise the right–to–die, hospice is a really good option for
them to control the pain and pass peacefully. "Hospice care is specialized care designed to provide
support to a person and their loved ones during an advanced illness, it focuses on comfort and
quality of life rather than a cure."(Hospice, 2015) Hospice is really the only option for people who
live in states that do not support the right–to–die; it strives to give the patient the highest possible
quality of life and make them comfortable, so they can live their final days to the fullest. Hospice is
offered in the home, in long–term care facilities, and hospice will do about anything to keep the
patient comfortable. They help prepare their patients and their families for the approaching death,
and they offer bereavement services to the family after the death for up to three months. Hospice is a
great resource for people who are ready to stop fighting and be comfortable, but it still does not
provide the freedom that the right–to–die laws can, like allowing people to make their own choices
about their life.
Right–to–die laws are state mandated in only four states: Oregon, California, Washington, and
Vermont. State mandated means that if a person meets the requirements to exercise their right–to–
die, and he can find a physician that will write their prescription, he is free to do as he pleases. In
Montana, right–to–die is mandated by court ruling, which means you must go to

their time unconscious because the time stamp on their life has long expired, all while amounting a

Many may see the hospital as their only option, but there is still always Hospice care. Hospice care

The hospice also pays for all medical services, medications, durable medical equipment, supplies

The Effectiveness Of Hospice Care
The Effectiveness of Hospice Care for Delirium
Patients

Abstract
The limitation of hospice care is focused on the idea of providing delirium patients and their
families with a peaceful encounter of an acceptable death. Moral experience encompasses a person's
sense that values that he or she deems important are being realized or thwarted in everyday life. This
includes a person's interpretations of a lived encounter, or a set of lived encounters, that fall on
spectrums of right–wrong, good–bad or just–unjust. (p. 659) Delirium is highly widespread in
terminally ill patients and that cause distress on the patient with delirium and their families. The role

suffering from an illness and they are not them normal selves. The final days of a loved one's life are
painful and hard for many. Having hospice caregivers present relax the family because they know
their loved one would be taken care of.
Hospice care for a patient with delirium is very challenging. The main concern is to provide a
healthy familiar atmosphere for the patient. Creating positive and peaceful images that would be
remembered by the family was a source of pride amongst hospice caregivers. Hospice caregivers
help the patient and the patient's family comes to terms with death. Death is a natural thing that
should not be feared. Death happens through a series of changes for instance cognition and
consciousness. But that is better said then understood. Death is a normal part of life but it is often
hard to grasp, especially when it is a loved one that is dying. Really we lose our loved ones in
stages. Death is a series of little goodbyes. There's a goodbye to your mobility. There's a goodbye to
everything, to wanting to eat, a goodbye to drinking. And then

Palliative Care And Hospice Care
Introduction
Palliative care seems to be a grey area of nursing. Nursing for many years has been thought of as a
healing process, aiding people to their healthiest place. Palliative care is also known as comfort care,
should not be confused with hospice care. "Both palliative care and hospice care provide comfort.
But palliative care can begin at diagnosis, and at the same time as treatment. Hospice care begins
after treatment of the disease is stopped and when it is clear that the patient is not going to survive
the illness. Hospice care is usually offered only when the person is expected to live 6 months or
less" (National Institute of Health 2015). Palliative care specialized for children will be the focus of
this paper.

Hospice And Palliative Care Organization
Introduction According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care organization, in 2011, an
estimated 1.651 million patients received services from hospice care, while 1,059,000 patients
passed away from this form of care in the same year (NHPCO pdf, 2012). Hospice end of life cares
mission/goal is to provide compassionate care for patients and their families who are living with a
life limiting illness. This type of medical service gives expert medical care, pain management, and
emotional and spiritual support (NHPCO, 2016). End of life care is beneficial for ones well being
while they are passing away. Giving someone a peaceful and warm environment to spend their final
life moments in. This form of end of life care is something that most people can relate to as many
friends and family members have gone through this process. Hospice care is delivered to many
patients, residents, and in general people all around the world, having many factors that go into
hospice such as the requirements to receive hospice, the care team and the levels of care one
receives, all of these factors are extremely important when it comes to the care for one's life, family
member, or friend.
Hospice 101 There are many factors that go into hospice services, not just the basic cares that one
would assume. According the U.S. National Library of Medicine, hospice care helps people with
illnesses that cannot be cured and who are nearing death. The goal is to give comfort and peace

The For A Patient For Hospice Care
The ability for a patient to qualify for hospice care is based on the physician's determination that
their illness is not responding to treatment and the patient has 6 months or less to live. Illnesses that
require hospice care in the adult population take a more predictable pattern than in pediatric and
perinatal patients. This is not to say that the process of hospice care and dying is easier for the
patients, their families, or the hospice team, but that there is more research in how to prepare for
such care. Non–hospice nurses have a stronger foundation and better understanding of death and
dying with regard to patients at this stage of life that allows them to be better equipped to initiate
discussions of hospice care. It takes special training in psychosocial support to give adequate
hospice care, but the base knowledge of nursing is more prepared for discussing end–of–life–care
with older patients than with children. It is this ability to communicate that allows them to build the
rapport that is crucial to improving the quality of dying.
Though there have been advancements in hospice care in improving the quality and availability of
such resources, it is still underutilized, especially in cases of advanced dementia. "Patients dying
with dementia who receive hospice care have better symptom management, fewer hospitalizations,
and greater family satisfaction with the care than those not receiving hospice care" (Mauk, 2014).
Patients may not be aware that they

Hospice Vs. Hospitalization

  • 1. Hospice vs. Hospitalization Everyone in this room is going to die at some point and statistically speaking it is more than likely half of this room will die from a terminal illness. Most often patients with a terminal disease end up living their last days in the hospital. Hospice is an alternative to institutional death, and one that provides a holistic approach to improve the quality of life in patient's final days of living. Working as a volunteer for hospice I have witnessed the quality of care that is provided and the serenity it can bring to a family. Hospitalization and hospice care provide different services. It is important that people understand the differences between hospitalization and hospice care, so that as an individual reaches the end of their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So who pays? The cost of both hospitalization and hospice care are usually paid for through private insurance, Medicare, Medicaid or other forms of payment. Being covered by Medicare has only very recently been inducted by congress, and still remains very limited. The results of the National Hospice Study show positive evidence of Hospice home care costs to be 44 per cent less than hospital based cost, an average of $95 versus $66 a day, respectively. That is close to a grand a month. Hospice care tends to be less expensive than hospitalization because there is no use of high– cost life–saving equipment, and also because friends and family can act as caregivers, reducing the cost of healthcare professionals. Who is involved when it comes to caregivers? According to the American Cancer Society, one of the key differences between hospitalization and hospice care is that family and friends provide the majority of care. Hospice volunteers work as much with the family as with the patient. They may teach family members how to change dressings, remove a catheter, administer medicine, use bed pans, use a hospital bed, or assist in the dying in other ways. In a hospital setting, doctors, nurses and other healthcare specialists provide the majority of care. The hospice team of professional consists of a doctor, who serves as a medical director, nurses who provide direct care and case management, home health aides, social workers, ... • 2. Hospice Nurse Role Hospice is a concept of care that is based on the belief that meaningful living is achievable during a terminal illness that is free of interventions that prolong physiologic dying. The role of a hospice nurse is to take on a holistic approach to patient care that involves a careful evaluation of not only physical problems but also the psychosocial and spiritual dimensions of the patient and the patient's family (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014). The hospice nurse is culturally aware and sensitive in their approach to communication that respects beliefs, attitudes, and values of the patient and family about end–of–life care. The hospice nurse also provides support to families even after the death of the patient (Nies & McEwen, 2015). The hospice nurse also educates family members about the physical symptoms of terminal illness such as dyspnea, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mrs. Keith practiced hospice nursing for over 10 years. Mrs. Keith became a hospice nurse because her mother was dying and choosing to put her on hospice was the best decision she has ever made. Although retired, Mrs. Keith still volunteers time to time to sit with patients. Mrs. Keith stated, You walk with families, with all the issues families may have; you walk with them, through their fears and anger, through love, laughter, and tears. You see great healing and forgiveness at times. A healing that traditional medicine may not understand. But it is the healing a medicine cannot touch. It is the healing of love and compassion and presence. It is our presence, love, and compassion, as patients and families journey, step by step, closer and closer to saying goodbye to each other. (personal communication, April 26, 2018) I was blown away by her compassion for hospice nursing. I believe it takes a special person to be a hospice nurse. • 3. Children in Hospice Children in Hospice Katrina Williams RES/110 April 26, 2012 Professor James Lazos Children in Hospice Research suggests that every year there are between 100,000 to 150,000 children born in the United States with a genetic disorder or defect. This represents approximately 20% of infant deaths each year. However, many of these children live to age well beyond the expectation, and some are enrolled in hospice. According to Armstrong–Daily and Zarbock (2001), "The concept of hospice today is applied to patients who are traveling through the final stages of their lives–in effect seeking shelter and comfort." Hence, the main focus of this program is to prepare families for the death of a loved one. Although accepting these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even when hospitalized, parents must be prepared to fight for the right of their child to live because many medical professionals give the impression that any effort would be useless. Many parents are even willing to care for the child within the home but there are no resources available to assist with care other than nursing. This should be a key area for concern as the patient is expected to live six months in most cases and it is more than enough time to prepare for the child's death. When that time has passed and the child is still progressing, one is only left to wonder the next step. At this point, time spent creating memories with family should be top priority. It is my recommendation that the health care community implement a network of resources for parents who are not willing to accept and grieve but are willing to accept and fight to prolong the life of their child. Resources and information should be readily available to assist with any type of services that would bring relief for situations ranging from housing to therapy. Medical professionals also should be required to take a course in patient relations giving some insight into the emotional turmoil that many parents experience. This probably would change some parent's perception of the medical profession because discretion and empathy would be used when providing information about the child's condition. Any feelings of hopelessness may be eliminated and replaced with feelings of relief ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Care Of Hospice Care In recent years, Hospice care has risen to popularity and is being widely used among many terminally – ill patients and their families. Hospice care supports patients and their families emotionally and physically through the dying process. Imagine being told that you have a terminal disease and that you have a limited amount of time before you die. This stress and hopelessness can be relieved by a hospice care team, that would be there for you and your family. With hospice care, both the patient and caregiver would be provided with support and optimal care. The goal of this paper is to evaluate caregivers' perceptions and experiences concerning the care of a terminally ill loved one, and to compare the satisfaction of patients and or caregivers with and without access to hospice care programs. Introduction The goal of hospice is neither to prolong life nor to hasten the dying process, but rather, hospice focuses on comfort not curing. It helps to maximize patients' quality of life as they travel along this last journey. Hospice care may offer several advantages over traditional, hospital–based care for people with terminal illnesses. It can be delivered in a patient's home, allowing death to take place in the their own home, it may also optimize the relief of pain, increase patients' and carers satisfaction, whilst allowing them to die in peace, comfort and dignity. Caring for a patient that is terminally ill can be a burden on any family. Caregivers are usually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Hospice Utilization Hospice Utilization in the Workplace Hospice and palliative care are still new concepts to many that come into the facility. While the process and the goals of palliative and hospice care can be described to the patients and family members, the terminology and interpretation may be challenged by their previous beliefs and ideologies. However, after careful counseling and education, many family members agree to undergo hospice or palliative care at the appropriate time. Considering that five years ago, hospice utilization in the workplace was scarce in comparison to today where there is an entire unit devoted to promoting palliative and hospice care, it can be said that these new forms of care are becoming accepted practices with favorable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What was once believed to be a form of neglect has resulted in a change in practice with the idea that doing less is more. Culture is an important factor in how care is rendered and thus, the limitations of palliative and hospice care lie within the desires of the family and patients. A thorough understanding of our surrounding demographics helps to ensure a seamless approach to providing care without bias or imposition of ones beliefs. However, just as with all things, providing care for the sick and comforting the dying should be rendered in moderation as to prevent the effects of burn out. Likewise, the same effects occur in the caregivers who sacrifice their responsibilities in order to care for their love ones. Finally, and with some closing thoughts, the writer wishes to express with gratitude the benefit of having taken this course to better understand oneself and others in the realm of healthcare. The lessons learned throughout have expanded this writer's knowledge and understanding of the human desire to make a connection through communication, emotion, compassion, and spiritually – the platform from which this writer wishes to continue seeking further knowledge and ... The time when a family decides that hospice care is the best option for their loved one to receive the end of life quality care that they deserve, the process should be as calm and easy as possible. UHR's website is one that provides family members with the resources they need to make the transition to hospice care easy. • 8. Benefits Of A Hospice Nurse Registered Nursing takes skilled and hard working people. There are many jobs in the Nursing field. To name a few, there are: Hospice Nurses, Long Term Care Facility Nurses, ER Nurses, Pediatric Nurses, Geriatric Nurses, Acute Care Nurses, etc. Hospice Nurses are jobs taken by people that are strong hearted and strong willed. I had an experience with a Hospice Nurse in a job shadow. I went to the houses of her patients instead of a facility. We went to three different houses to take care of her assigned residents. Her patients loved her very much and she did her job with love and care. Three days after my experience with her, one of her residents passed away. They had a great patient and nurse relationship. She was filled with sadness and I also felt sad for the resident's family and other caregivers that cared for him. Hospice patients are only said to live about six months or less. Not all residents pass away after six months, some live longer. Hospice care is given to patients that are dying, but hospice can also go on pause because the patient becomes more independent. The job of hospice nurses is to take care of the resident nearing the time of death, not to cure their diseases. My job shadow said that it is always sad when her patients go, but she knows that they are not suffering like they were when they were living. At this point, patients are emotionally released, they feel a sense of peace, and begin to settle in the thought. The final stage of the grieving process is Return to love. • 10. Hospice : A Philosophy Of Care Hospice: Hospice is a philosophy of care. It treats the person rather than the disease and focuses on quality of life. It surrounds the patient and family with a team consisting of professionals who not only address physical distress, but emotional and spiritual issues as well. Hospice care is patient–centered because the needs of the patient and family drive the activities of the hospice team. 1. There are many different kinds of hospice settings. What kinds of Hospice services are available in Omaha? Choose a specific home based hospice service and an inpatient hospice setting. What does each of these offer in terms of patient care? Pathways to Compassion Hospice provide care for patients mainly in their own home settings. Their primary goal is to well–manage pain and symptoms while keeping comfortability. Hospice House–The Josie Harper Residence offers inpatient and routine hospice care. It provides necessary individual terminally ill care that could be overwhelming and difficult to provide in the home. The tentative care received by residents living with terminal illnesses, families, and friends is full of compassionate and comfort. 2. Who makes up the hospice team and what are their responsibilities? • 11. The Treatment Of Hospice And Palliative Care According to Cynthia R., of the Journal of Palliative Medicine, "Medical technology has been progressing in leaps and bounds since the second half of the 20th century" (1). This advancement is the result of ongoing studies of medical researchers, bringing about new curative treatments for a variety of diseases. Many of these are extending the lives and increasing comfort of those that are terminally ill. However, amongst the improvements in medical treatments available, they have become the default method of practice even for patients that will not ultimately overcome their condition. When given a diagnosis, patients are often thrust into a variety of treatments by health care providers. However, when that illness is no longer treatable to the extent that the patient will be cured, patients are often kept in the same realm of curative treatments despite their preferences. Hospice and palliative care is a specialized form of medical care that provides terminally ill patients (and their families) with pain management, family planning, and a focus on spiritual and emotional well being in the last days of a patients life, outside of a hospital environment. Hospice and palliative care does not mean that one is necessarily needing to be at an imminent stage before death. Rather, it is the ability of patients with terminal illnesses to receive pain management and care in order to live out the rest of their lives comfortably. Palliative care is said to have, "encouraged medicine to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This care can be provided by people other than health care providers, it can be done by patient's family members (2). The goal of a hospice care is not to find a cure for the disease, however, it aims to give a good quality of life for patients who suffer from terminal illness by medical therapy, emotional support and make them feel comfortable (3). Many times a person and their family will turn to hospice care. The meaning of hospice is to provide care to a person who is terminally ill. Hospice does not speed up or postpone death. Hospice is a type of care that provides services to improve the quality of life for the patient and family. • 14. Essay about Hospice Programs Hospice Programs Hospice Programs; A Dignified Death In the Middle Ages, hospice was a place where sick or weary travelers would stay while a long journey. These patients are diagnosed with an illness from which they will never recover and usually have a life prognosis of six months or less (Hospice Foundation of America, 2014). The goal of hospice care is improving quality of life and managing the symptoms of disease and the dying process. The care hospice offers is focused on pain management and emotional and spiritual support for both the patient and family (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, 2012).
