• The word expository comes from the root word
expose, which means to reveal. In an expository
essay, the student researches, evaluates information,
and explains the topic briefly and clearly to provide
information. Expository writing can clarify a
particular topic, give directions, or describe how to
do something. The expository essay is composed of
five paragraphs and should present the main idea in
the introductory paragraph.

• The body of the essay should give clear and concise
information on the topic in three paragraphs. The
concluding paragraph restates the main idea and
connect the main points, wrapping up the essay. This
type of essay should not reflect personal thoughts or
opinions. Expository essays may compare and
contrast two ideas, give a definition or analyze cause
and effect. Expository essays are usually written in
the third person.
