1. Get Out (2017) - Watched
The film is a mystery thriller. This caption is explaining that the producers for the film are the same as other
famous thriller films which will already grab the audiences attention.
The fact that they are naming the producer’s previous films which were all successful tells the audience that they
have the experience to make a top quality thriller film; this is used as an eye-opener and attracts the audience
members to instantly be more intrigued. Also, the editing team use fade in and fade out effects to break up the
shots and give an impression rather than a full story.
.
2. • This group shot portrays somebody welcoming another character to their home, which the
audience can assume because they are standing outside a house; because the door is open the
audience can assume that they came out of their house especially to meet the other characters
with open arms.
• The non-diegetic music used in this shot would indicate that the welcoming couple will turn on
the other characters.
3. • This is a Point of View shot of the first African-American who is outside in the dark whilst the
gardener sprints towards him.
• Using this as a Point of View shot will jump scare some audience members, which is what the film
was created to do.
• Getting the audience scared will grab even more of their attention, using a different shot other
than a POV for this segment would not have scared as many audience members. The non-diegetic
music also builds anticipation.
4. • This reaction shot used the slow motion editing effect to truly capture this man’s face. He looks
like he’s about to cry and he is a significant character in the film so the editors had to be certain to
give him some screen time in the trailer in a way that will make the audience sympathise with
him.
• This reaction shots connects the character and audience, portrays more about the atmosphere to
the audience and also the reaction shot means that the next cut is further away than others
before, so it slows the pace down as slow motion is opposite to quick paced fast takes.
5. • This reaction shot has a similar effect to the last one although the audience feel more connected
to this character because he has had the most screen time out of all the other characters in the
trailer.
• His shocked and emotional reaction leads the audience into feel sympathy for the character; this
shot is the image most people have seen as the producers used this image for posters promoting
the film so it’s not shock that they used it in the trailer.
6. • This shot is extremely short in the trailer and many may miss it, but it has
extreme relevance to the whole movie itself. However, it is only revealed in the
trailer for a matter of milliseconds.
• This is also a POV shot of one character looking down on the African American
man as he falls to the ‘sunken place’ which was added to give the audience the
feeling of them seeing him fall from their eyes, giving them a closer bond with the
falling character.
7. • Overall I believe that the trailer was a fair representation of the film
itself, fast paced hard cuts and the basics of the story was added
throughout the trailer.
• The main character had the most screen time in the trailer which is
the same in the actual film.
8. Neighbours (2014)
• Neighbours is a comedy film and is portrayed fairly in the trailer.
• This two shot shows this couple being open minded, happy and welcoming.
Neighbours (2014) - Watched
9. • However, this group shot of the new neighbours do not seem as
welcoming and do not even take notice of the couple.
• I like this shot because it gives this group unity because they are all in
the same place together, which is projected a lot in the actual film.
10. • This three shot could also be an establishing shot of the two houses that are next
to each other.
• I particularly like this shot because it portrays the divide between the neighbours
but also displays their legacies and what they have work hard to earn (their
homes).
11. • This reaction shot of one of the main characters contradicts what happens in the
next shot is a common method for trailer creators.
• This shot does not represent the group of boys positively at all and the trailer
teases that they definitely aren’t quiet for their neighbours.
12. • This final group shot is a complete contradiction to the last shot.
• I like the constant juxtaposition in the trailer because it does not
reveal the whole story of the film in the trailer.
• This trailer was a balanced representation of what happens in the film
without revealing the end story.
13. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) - Not
watched
• This is an action film based on the Marvel comics.
• The trailer starts with a close-up of Spiderman’s torso with the logo to indicate
who he is and gives him authority.
• I like this shot because a voiceover is not needed to explain who this character is.
14. • This Point of View shot shows the life of the main character and what
he sees inside the suit.
• This shot is eye-catching for the audience because the audience
member would not have seen Spiderman from this perspective.
• The POV shot also shows off the new gear that Spiderman gains in the
new film.
15. • I like this establishing shot because it clearly shows the type of
location that the trailer and film is set this.
• I believe every trailer should include at least one establishing shot
because it may attract many audience members if they find out
where the film is located from the trailer e.g. New York, London etc.
and it prevents the trailer from becoming too claustrophobic which is
a danger.
16. • Over the shoulder shots are standard when characters exchange dialogue,
however they have not been used in the other trailers that have been analysed
where the dialogue tends to appear under other footage.
• An underground car park is a complete contrast to the outdoor locations that
have previously been used throughout this trailer, again avoiding the danger of
the trailer becoming too fixed on a small number of shot types and compositions.
17. • This shot portrays the exact Spiderman image that the film is going for.
• The trailer had to include this shot because it shows Spiderman is above normal
people, which is why he is higher than them flying in this shot.
• The trailer advertises the history and future of Spiderman extremely well and it
easily teases the movie well for new viewers and cult followers of the franchise.
18. The Baby Boss (2017) – Not watched
• This film is a cartoon and a completely different film and trailer to the previous
trailers that have been analysed.
• This first shot is a close up reaction shot of the main character in the film and his
reaction and how close the camera is to his face gives the audience the
impression that he is the main character.
19. • This group shot is used often in family based cartoons because it
shows their bond that the family has and that they spend time
together.
• Considering this trailer is aimed to attract young families, seeing a
shot like this will definitely persuade a young family to watch the
whole film.
20. • The two shot that the trailer cuts to shows a divide between the two
young siblings.
• This could appeal to families with divided siblings who can witness
the characters divide and could help heal the divide between the
family siblings.
21. • This low angle is needed in the trailer to show the young viewers of
the film not to be sneaky and obey the rules.
• This will appeal to all parents especially with mischievous kids
because if they get attached to these characters enough they will
learn from their mistakes in the film.
22. • This final two shot portrays the two main characters but the younger looking one
has all the authority throwing money at the other child.
• Overall, this trailer and the shots use will easily persuade the target audience of
cartoons (young families).
• The way the trailer is structured is wacky and fun which is what many cartoon
trailers aim for because the most wacky and fun things are what grabs children’s
attention most.
