2. How my opening incorporates
generic conventions
There are many generic codes and conventions that need to be followed to
class my film as a “thriller” such as tension music, low key lighting, quick
cuts and shadows, however there are codes and conventions of opening
title sequences to consider such as showing names of important cast
members, the movie title and it should hint at what genre it is to the
audience, however most of these conventions you don’t need to follow.
To make your own film unique and stand out, you can challenge these
conventions and add your own twists to them to suit what you want.
3. How my opening develops and
challenges these conventions
In my film I have included quick cuts and music that creates tension,
however I have used natural lighting and turned it black and white so
that I can create the low key lighting need to make it more
thrilleresque
In my film I have also only done a few of the conventions for the
opening title sequence so that I don’t spread my name all the way
throughout the film.
4. 9 Key Frame Analysis
Frame 1This image is one of the
most important in the
sequence
I chose this font style for
the production company
because it looks like a
normal font
The wooded
background is
meant to be dark
and mysterious
This scene sets up the film to be a
thriller because of the woods and
the dark background
5. Frame 2
I chose this font for the
main title because it looks
creepy and goes well with
the genre.
I set this film to
be in combe
martin woods
this is because
this is the best
and closest place
to film at
The sound that is on the
recording is what was
actually there such as the
birds chirping and leaves
rustling
The characters that
are in my film are
introduced as
friends just out for a
walk
6. Frame 3
This scene shows a big symbol in
my film since the gate symbolises a
humans physical boundary
whereas not the creatures
The creature is in this shot
however because he blends
into the background you cant
see him that easily
The actors in this shot don’t seem to notice the
creature in the background
The
creatures
mask is a
white
morph
mask
7. Frame 4 This frame shows the two
teenagers gathering sticks for a
fire when suddenly one goes
missing
The effect that I have used is
static and this is to symbolise
the disappearance of the
characters
The costumes that were used were the actors own casual clothes, there were
very little props used in my film and that is because there was no need for
them
8. Frame 5
This frame sets up my story partly because of
the missing teenager and the other one
running to get away from the place
This frame is important to the
film because it shows the
beginning of the disappearances
of the film’s plot line.
This bit of the woods will be the main
setting for the film because it is
remote and it is where “the creature”
lives
9. Frame 6 This frame is important
because it shows that no
matter if you run “the
creature” will always follow
This frame shows that the teenager
is running away from something
which they don’t know what it is
suggesting they can’t see it
The story is set up that only
people that he sees will be
chased down and disappear
into thin air.
10. Frame 7
This is a key frame in my film
since it shows the disappearance
of the other teenager
For this frame I was planning on getting the
actor to jump off the gate and drop his hat
to show him disappearing but unfortunately
it didn’t work out.
This frame is at another key location
in the film because it shows the edge
of where the creature lives and can go
11. Frame 8 This frame shows the editing
because the creature is
disappearing and reappearing
closer and closer to the camera
I used cut editing here to
make “the creature” look
like it is teleporting
The costume that the white man wears
is a white morph mask plus a black
trench coat to show that it is creepy and
old
This frame introduces “the
creature” properly and what it
can do
12. Frame 9
This is a key frame in my film
because it is a jump scare where
the creature appears right in front
of the camera out of nowhere.
The lighting in this frame took
a while to get right because of
the white mask reflecting the
light making everything go
darker
This frame is important to the film because it shows the face of
“the creature” which would play an important part of the film as it
is the antagonist.
