Trauma-Informed Leadership - Five Practical Principles
Responsibility
1. Responsibility
It was a huge building, the building was headquarter of country’s leading
food processing company. Sanjh was very nervous as it was his
23rd interview and he was under tremendous pressure. This year only he
cleared his final semester of MBA, his college helped the students with
the placement but due to low score Sanjh did not qualified for the
interview of good companies and the remaining companies where not
qualified to Sanjh’s expectation in terms of pay package. Sanjh was very
hardworking boy but he was very slow learner and he knew about his
ability so he use to opt for those subjects where number game was not
involved much like arts in graduation and marketing in mba. He knew
about his ability and decided that he would land in sales where he just
need to sale products and not much technicalities were required. Sanjh
had no choice but to start hunting for jobs outside his college placement
as he had huge responsibilities to fulfil. His father had a paralysis when
Sanjh was just 5 year old which left him completely bedridden. His
mother worked all type of odd work so that Sanjh could complete his
studies and take care of the entire family. Sanjh had 2 younger sisters
whose entire responsibility would now be transferred to him.
2. • Sanjh reached back to the company office and sat on the
chair located near the reception counter, he was followed
by the girl on the scooter. Both had eye contact but Sanjh
tried to avoid her, he got noticed by the lady and the lady
came and sat on the chair next to his chair.Sanjh realized
that he should not behave the way he behaved with her
during the first meeting after all it was completely his
fault and no other should face the consequences due to
his problems.
• “I’m extremely sorry and I should not behave the way I
behaved with you.” Sanjh turned towards the lady and
apologized. “I was completely lost in my thoughts and I
did not realized that the pedestrian signal turned red from
green.”Sanjh added and explained his situation, he
thought of offering his hand and create formal
introduction round but he dropped the idea after all it’s a
girl and that too a beautiful one.

but he dropped the idea after all it’s a girl and that too a

4. • It came as a surprise when the girl said “It is ok” and she forwarded her
hand to him and said “Hi, I’m Subeh.” “My name is Sanjh” he greeted her
back.”
• “Subeh and Sanjh, wonderful combination of names, both are the part of
a day”Subeh carried the conversation further. “But Subeh is the
beginning of the day and the Sanjh is the end of the day” he replied her
back trying to end the conversation.
• There was a silence for few minutes, Subeh asked Sanjh “Don’t you think
you should be a bit more careful crossing the road, what if there was a
truck or a car instead of scooter?” Sanjh kept quiet for few seconds but
he thought to keep the conversation on and hide his problems within
and he utilized his ability of hiding his problems and smilingly replied
“One candidate wouldfall short for this interview and the chances of
others selection would increase.”Sanjh tried to show his entire teeth but
it looked as if Subeh was not happy with his reply.
• Sanjh thought that change in the topic might cheer her so he said “I’m
here for the sales interview, what are you here for?” Subeh replied him
back “Same here.” Sanjh was taken a back a bit and asked her “You are a
girl and how will you handle the door to door selling process, don’t you
think that the girls are misfit for this role.” Subeh again gave him a bad
look “What did you meant, and who says that the girls are misfit for
sales anyways I love meeting new people that’s why I chose to explore
this profession.”
5. • Their conversation got interrupted by the lady on the reception
counter and both of them were asked to head towards the interview
room. The interview ended and the result was announced, Subeh and
Sanjh were having their names in the selection list, company selected
15 candidates out of 20 candidates for the role of management
trainee and they will be trained firstly and later they will be assigned
a territory to sample company’s newly launched tomato paste and
get proper feedback. Their performance and sales number will decide
their fate in the company that whether they should be promoted as
area managers or being asked spend one more year as a
trainee.Sanjh was very happy as it came as a huge relief to him and
now he can take care of his family nicely with the salary which he
was expecting.
• Training started and both of them got along nicely, they were later
being assigned the same territory to perform their sales duty. Subeh
and Sanjh use to visit all the retailers from morning till evening and
conduct sampling session of the tomato paste and ask for the
feedback about the product. Both of them were equally enthusiastic
and their performance started getting acknowledged by the
management in very less time.
6. • Both became friends and then love birds but Sanjh never expressed his
feeling while in the other hand Subeh proposed him. Falling in love for
Sanjh was not affordable as it would deviate him from his duties and
responsibilities which he holds towards his family.
• Today was a big day for them as the senior management was on market
visit to observe the entire performance of both in their assigned
territory. Their hard worked resulted in to success and the market visit
went very good and the senior management liked their performance.
They were also being acknowledged with letter of appreciation from the
senior leadership.
• “Thank god, the market visit went well” Sanjh said it to Subeh. Both of
them were sitting in a café sipping coffee.
• “Do I look that bad?” Subeh took the conversation to different direction.
Sanjh got into statue mode as he was not expecting it.
• “You look good.” Sanjh replied.
• “Then why can’t we be together?”Subeh questioned him with a firm
tone.
• “We can’t as it is not possible, and moreover I don’t hold any such
feelings for you.” Sanjh also answered her straight. He loved her deeply
but he also knew about his responsibilities due to which he stops himself
every time in expressing his affection towards her.
7. • His words did not went well but she did not wanted to give up so easily
and asked him “Look into my eyes and tell me that you don’t love me.”
• “No, I don’t love you.” Sanjh replied her back heavy heartedly.
• She simply got up and left without saying a single word Sanjh was not
having any clue that this will be his last meeting with her. That night was
terrible for him but he was helpless as he wanted an undivided attention
and focus towards his family. The next day Sanjh reached office his eyes
were looking for her but he was unable to see her. Her absence was
highly missed by him and now he was realizing that she has become his
daily habit and for him it will be very difficult to live without her but
unfortunately it is too late for him.
• Today it was an acknowledgment session for all the management
trainees and those trainees who have performed their duties will be
promoted to area managers with a good salary increment. The hall was
full but for Sanjh it was completely empty and vacant as he was unable
to find her. The session started and Sanjh got promoted as area manager.
The name of Subeh was not there in the list. He was unable to
understand whether he should be happy for his promotion or he should
be sad for losing her.
8. • Days passed by but Subeh was absent from office it forced Sanjh to
enquire about her absence. He enquired about her from the HR team
and he was completely broken to know that she has gone abroad to
pursue her further studies. She informed the HR team on that very
evening that she will not be continuing with the company any more
• 10 years have passed since Subeh and Sanjh met for the first time but
every year Sanjh goes to that crossing on that particular day. He hopes
that one day she might meet him again which got lost just because Sanjh
wanted an undivided attention towards the responsibility of family.
• His father died the very next year of his promotion and on the same year
he lost his mother in an accident, both the sisters are married and well
settled. Sanjh is alone now waiting for his love which he lost because of
his responsibilities.
