Lesson 2: Finding Reliable Sources
Introduction
When gathering research for your paper, you want to be sure that you are collecting only the most academically valid and most relevant research about your topic. Sometimes, what is acceptable in a public sphere is not acceptable in an academic sphere, so you want to be certain that when you put your time and energy into reading, annotating, and using a source, it is the best choice for the type of genre that you are writing in—the academic argumentative research paper.
In EH 1010 and in previous lessons, we have discussed the ways in which different spheres of knowledge have different expectations about what makes for a reliable source. However, now that we are firmly rooted in the academic sphere, we need to think about audience and have audience awareness as a result.
Choosing Argument Over Opinion
Sources that you collect should make arguments based upon supporting evidence. Opinions have their place, but not in argumentative writing, such as the kind you will do in academic writing situations.
Opinion: An opinion is a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. People can have opinions about situations—social, political, economic, etc.—without having all the facts or without weighing all the facts because an opinion can be based upon someone’s personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
EXAMPLE 1:Peanut butter is the best food.
Obviously, in this example, we can see that there are faults in the statement. After all, food preferences are highly subjective. Even if you were able to find a food expert who was willing to state that peanut butter is the best food, it would still not be sufficient evidence upon which to base an argument.
EXAMPLE 2: NASA’s Space Shuttle program was a waste of taxpayer dollars.
In this second example, you can see that there is potential for an argument here. It is not always clear what is an opinion and what is an argument. The main thing to remember is that an opinion does not have backing, but an argument does. So if we were to take the statement above and add support to it, then it could become an argument because it would then have a correlation between the evidence being presented and the statement itself.
EXAMPLE 3 (revision):NASA’s Space Shuttle program was an unreasonable use of taxpayer dollars, with the final 22 flights averaging a cost of around $1.0 billion each (Pinchefsky, 2012).
As you can see here, the above example is an argument because it supplies evidence to support its claims.
Argument: An argument can be a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point. Typically, an argument is intended to convince or persuade an audience to adopt the writer’s argument.
In both of the examples below, the writer makes an assumption about what the evidence means and asserts a claim as a result.

A research paper is an academic paper in which you use the ideas of experts to support your point of view (thesis) about a topic. These kinds of papers are written following a universally accepted format such as the APA style and MLA style.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A RESEARCH PAPER:
· In a research paper, you read the relevant expert sources and then make an evaluation of what you have learned from them. Your research findings, your opinion based on what you have learned from various sources and your original ideas about your topic comprise a good research paper.
· A research paper shows your creativity. However, this doesn’t mean that a research paper is a long personal opinion essay. Your own opinion only, not supported by sources, will not make a reliable research paper. Likewise using only experts’ ideas without evaluating them, adding your own interpretation and judgment will not make an original research paper; it will be a report paper without your own thoughts.
· In a research paper you evaluate and interpret what you have learned about your topic from your sources. Your unique interpretation and the conclusions you have drawn from your research findings will make your original research paper.
· A summary of a single source cannot make a good research paper; you must use variety of sources, evaluating each source. Similarly, a list of nothing but direct quotations cannot make a research paper. That will look like a ‘cut and paste’ work, nothing original.
· In a research paper all sources must be cited. You can use paraphrase, summary and direct quotation (if necessary) techniques to cite from the sources. Using sources without making proper citations is NOT RESEARCH; it is PLAGIARISM= STEALING

The primary focus of this chapter is on students’ process of research
and incorporating that research into academic writing. An important
concept related to research is that it is a process, not a single action.
The process includes the following:

T ypes of ReseaRch
Before beginning the research process, it is important to identify and
understand the two major types of research: primary and second-
ary. Primary research involves using firsthand sources for informa-
tion, where the material comes directly from an expert, researcher, or
writer. Primary research is the most credible type of research because
the information is original, and you, the researcher, will be the one

to gather and analyze the information. Examples of primary research
include interviews, surveys, originally authored articles, witness
reports, and court records. If you write a research paper that includes
an interview with an expert in the field, the paper is considered pri-
mary research.
Conversely, secondary research involves using information that
relies on primary research. Referencing someone else’s work (which
is based on a primary source) is secondary research. Examples of sec-
ondary research include citing statistics gathered by a university or
organization, referring to an individual’s quote found in a periodical
article or popular media, and book reviews or critiques. Table 11.1
notes common sources for the two types of research.

Introduction
Quantitative research is frequently used in the social sciences because it is quick, relatively inexpensive, and
considered a valid method of inquiry by researchers and academicians. The goals of quantitative research are
to describe the attributes of a group of people, to measure differences between groups, to determine if a
relationship exists between variables, or to predict if one event or factor causes another.
Quantitative studies contain measurable and quanti�able data, a
statistically appropriate sample, use of statistical techniques, and
a structured data collection plan to ensure that the study can be
replicated. Additionally, quantitative studies require the use of
valid and reliable instruments, surveys, or databases to quantify
variables. The research method is deductive, very structured, and
in�exible as often the goal of the researcher is to generalize or
apply the results to other groups and populations besides those
participating in the study. Ultimately, quantitative research offers a systematic and structured process for
answering research questions (Balnaves & Caputi, 2001).
Critically Reading Quantitative Research
Doctoral learners must go through a process of learning how to critically read empirical research. While
reading is a familiar skill to learners, at the doctoral level, it takes on new depth as learners transition to the

your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or something more durable, such as an article of

possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts (i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership. The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if you’re using standard one inch margins

Lesson 2: Finding Reliable Sources
Introduction
When gathering research for your paper, you want to be sure that you are collecting only the most academically valid and most relevant research about your topic. Sometimes, what is acceptable in a public sphere is not acceptable in an academic sphere, so you want to be certain that when you put your time and energy into reading, annotating, and using a source, it is the best choice for the type of genre that you are writing in—the academic argumentative research paper.
In EH 1010 and in previous lessons, we have discussed the ways in which different spheres of knowledge have different expectations about what makes for a reliable source. However, now that we are firmly rooted in the academic sphere, we need to think about audience and have audience awareness as a result.
Choosing Argument Over Opinion
Sources that you collect should make arguments based upon supporting evidence. Opinions have their place, but not in argumentative writing, such as the kind you will do in academic writing situations.
Opinion: An opinion is a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty. People can have opinions about situations—social, political, economic, etc.—without having all the facts or without weighing all the facts because an opinion can be based upon someone’s personal view, attitude, or appraisal.
EXAMPLE 1:Peanut butter is the best food.
Obviously, in this example, we can see that there are faults in the statement. After all, food preferences are highly subjective. Even if you were able to find a food expert who was willing to state that peanut butter is the best food, it would still not be sufficient evidence upon which to base an argument.
EXAMPLE 2: NASA’s Space Shuttle program was a waste of taxpayer dollars.
In this second example, you can see that there is potential for an argument here. It is not always clear what is an opinion and what is an argument. The main thing to remember is that an opinion does not have backing, but an argument does. So if we were to take the statement above and add support to it, then it could become an argument because it would then have a correlation between the evidence being presented and the statement itself.
EXAMPLE 3 (revision):NASA’s Space Shuttle program was an unreasonable use of taxpayer dollars, with the final 22 flights averaging a cost of around $1.0 billion each (Pinchefsky, 2012).
As you can see here, the above example is an argument because it supplies evidence to support its claims.
Argument: An argument can be a statement, reason, or fact for or against a point. Typically, an argument is intended to convince or persuade an audience to adopt the writer’s argument.
In both of the examples below, the writer makes an assumption about what the evidence means and asserts a claim as a result.

A research paper is an academic paper in which you use the ideas of experts to support your point of view (thesis) about a topic. These kinds of papers are written following a universally accepted format such as the APA style and MLA style.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A RESEARCH PAPER:
· In a research paper, you read the relevant expert sources and then make an evaluation of what you have learned from them. Your research findings, your opinion based on what you have learned from various sources and your original ideas about your topic comprise a good research paper.
· A research paper shows your creativity. However, this doesn’t mean that a research paper is a long personal opinion essay. Your own opinion only, not supported by sources, will not make a reliable research paper. Likewise using only experts’ ideas without evaluating them, adding your own interpretation and judgment will not make an original research paper; it will be a report paper without your own thoughts.
· In a research paper you evaluate and interpret what you have learned about your topic from your sources. Your unique interpretation and the conclusions you have drawn from your research findings will make your original research paper.
· A summary of a single source cannot make a good research paper; you must use variety of sources, evaluating each source. Similarly, a list of nothing but direct quotations cannot make a research paper. That will look like a ‘cut and paste’ work, nothing original.
· In a research paper all sources must be cited. You can use paraphrase, summary and direct quotation (if necessary) techniques to cite from the sources. Using sources without making proper citations is NOT RESEARCH; it is PLAGIARISM= STEALING

The primary focus of this chapter is on students’ process of research
and incorporating that research into academic writing. An important
concept related to research is that it is a process, not a single action.
The process includes the following:

Knowing this process allows students to allocate their research
time accordingly. Let’s dig into the research process and explore

T ypes of ReseaRch
Before beginning the research process, it is important to identify and
understand the two major types of research: primary and second-
ary. Primary research involves using firsthand sources for informa-
tion, where the material comes directly from an expert, researcher, or
writer. Primary research is the most credible type of research because
the information is original, and you, the researcher, will be the one

to gather and analyze the information. Examples of primary research
include interviews, surveys, originally authored articles, witness
reports, and court records. If you write a research paper that includes
an interview with an expert in the field, the paper is considered pri-
mary research.
Conversely, secondary research involves using information that
relies on primary research. Referencing someone else’s work (which
is based on a primary source) is secondary research. Examples of sec-
ondary research include citing statistics gathered by a university or
organization, referring to an individual’s quote found in a periodical
article or popular media, and book reviews or critiques. Table 11.1
notes common sources for the two types of research.

Introduction
Quantitative research is frequently used in the social sciences because it is quick, relatively inexpensive, and
considered a valid method of inquiry by researchers and academicians. The goals of quantitative research are
to describe the attributes of a group of people, to measure differences between groups, to determine if a
relationship exists between variables, or to predict if one event or factor causes another.
Quantitative studies contain measurable and quanti�able data, a
statistically appropriate sample, use of statistical techniques, and
a structured data collection plan to ensure that the study can be
replicated. Additionally, quantitative studies require the use of
valid and reliable instruments, surveys, or databases to quantify
variables. The research method is deductive, very structured, and
in�exible as often the goal of the researcher is to generalize or
apply the results to other groups and populations besides those
participating in the study. Ultimately, quantitative research offers a systematic and structured process for
answering research questions (Balnaves & Caputi, 2001).
Critically Reading Quantitative Research
Doctoral learners must go through a process of learning how to critically read empirical research. While
reading is a familiar skill to learners, at the doctoral level, it takes on new depth as learners transition to the
mindset of a researcher. The required reading materials will be more dif�cult to read, take more time, and
require learners to improve their reading ef�ciency and critical-thinking skills. Having ample time built in for
reading is crucial to the success of a doctoral student. Reading is the foundation to a dissertation research

your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or something more durable, such as an article of

possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts (i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership. The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if you’re using standard one inch margins
and 12 point font). In addition, your essay must include a bibliography (using MLA or APA format) of
all sources cited with information drawn from each of the following source categories (the guidelines
below are a minimum):
• 2 scholarly sources from books and/or peer-reviewed journals
