Sources & Destinations Essay
This assignment asks you to produce a research-based essay on something you use/consume routinely in
your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or something more durable, such as an article of
clothing or an electronic device. The possibilities are limitless. Your job is to account as thoroughly as
possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts (i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership. The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if you’re using standard one inch margins
and 12 point font). In addition, your essay must include a bibliography (using MLA or APA format) of
all sources cited with information drawn from each of the following source categories (the guidelines
below are a minimum):
• 2 scholarly sources from books and/or peer-reviewed journals
• 3 high quality and reliable websites —Wikipedia will NOT be accepted as a credible source
• 3 other high quality and reliable sources of your choice

In this class you have a rare opportunity to develop, revise/edit, and resubmit your work. Your revised exploratory paper (Essay 2) will become the introduction to your research paper. The revised position paper (Essay 3) will become the body. In addition, you will create a conclusion or "solutions" section for the final project. Note, however, that significant revisions are expected, so you should carefully review the edited draft and rubric evaluations for both essays 2/3 before you begin your final essay.
The final research papers must meet ALL of the minimum criteria for the assignment (in terms of structure, development, documentation style, quality and number of research sources, and writing skills) to be eligible for a score. In other words, you must receive a mark of "competent" in all of these areas to receive a grade for this assignment.
English 103: Essay 4—Research Paper
In the Research Paper, you will further develop, revise, and build upon the single perspective argument you have been developing all semester. Your final assignment should demonstrate your ability to apply the principles of argument discussed in the class throughout the semester and it should demonstrate your ability to use critical thinking when discussing a controversial issue.
Directions:
Prepare an 8-10 page research essay that builds upon the single perspective argument paper. The purpose of this assignment is to build upon what you have already created in the course. Therefore, the introduction of your research paper should be drawn from your Exploratory Paper, laying the foundation for the reader by presenting all sides of the issue, the exigence, etc. The body should be drawn from the Position Paper, which incorporates research to support your claim and sub-claims. Obviously, you cannot include the entire portion of each of the previous papers, and your final research paper should show that you’ve developed areas requiring development and made significant revisions to those sections of your papers requiring revision. The idea is to pull sections and points from previous essays. Use comments from me to revise those papers as you incorporate portions of them into this final project.
In addition to revising/developing the exploratory and position papers to serve as the introduction and body of the research paper, you will write an extended conclusion in which you focus on a viable solution and/or conclusion to the issue. For the conclusion, provide a means of solving the problem indicated by your topic. Consider the audience, establish common ground, and provide details for how to implement the solution. For example, if the position paper argued that bilingual education is necessary in California schools, the solution would discuss how to implement bilingual education programs in our California schools. Mission & Purpose: The College of Ethnic Studies provides safe academic spaces for all to learn the histories, cultures, and intellectual traditions of Native peoples and communities of color in the U.S. in the first-person and also practice theories of resistance and liberation to eliminate racism and other forms of oppression.

Race and Resistance Studies Department:
The program in Race and Resistance Studies offers coursework that examines how institutions such as education, healthcare, penal systems, and popular culture affect and oppress communities of color and Native peoples. More importantly, students examine the creative and complex ways in communities of color and Native peoples respond and resist institutional and social inequality. In doing so, program curriculum explores how domestic issues are shaped by transnational processes and how oppressions and resistances are shaped by intersections of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality. Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Sources & Destinations Essay
This assignment asks you to produce a research-based essay on
something you use/consume routinely in
your daily life. This can be a food item, a type of fuel, or
something more durable, such as an article of
clothing or an electronic device. The possibilities are limitless.
Your job is to account as thoroughly as
possible for this item’s contribution to your overall ecological
footprint. To do this, you will need to
research information such as where it comes from, how and by
whom it is made, the origins of its raw
material inputs, packaging, and how (and how far) it travels to
reach you. You will also want to account
for what happens to this item when you finish with it.
Your essay should relate explicitly to principles and practices of
sustainability as explored in this course.
Essays must consider both the item’s physical impact on the
earth and the positive and/or negative
impacts the item has on human communities involved in and
affected by its production, transport, and/or
disposal. You must choose to emphasize either the physical or
the social, rather than both. You are
expected to also convey an awareness of the other’s impacts
(i.e., if you focus on the physical, you must
convey an awareness of the social, and vice-versa). All essays
2. should also explore and address more
sustainable alternatives to the item under consideration.
Your audience for this essay is an intelligent general readership.
The essay should be between 2000 and
3000 words long (that’s 7 to 10 pages of double-spaced text if
you’re using standard one inch margins
and 12 point font). In addition, your essay must include a
bibliography (using MLA or APA format) of
all sources cited with information drawn from each of the
following source categories (the guidelines
below are a minimum):
• 2 scholarly sources from books and/or peer-reviewed journals
• 3 high quality and reliable websites —Wikipedia will NOT be
accepted as a credible source
• 3 other high quality and reliable sources of your choice

your awareness of your own ecological footprint.

Topic Exploration (posted to Blackboard by 11:59 on 9/30)—
Preliminary list of sources (at least six
per topic) and reflection on two possible topics. Two double-
spaced pages, 20 points possible.
Outline and Annotated Bibliography (posted to Blackboard by
11:59 p.m. on 10/28)— 80 points
possible.
• Outline (2 pages) –
o This should include main sections of your essay as well as
sub-topics you will address under
each section. It should provide a clear roadmap of the paper
you will submit.
• Annotated Bibliography –
o This portion of the assignment will supply the sources used in
developing and defining your
topic and paper. Your annotated bibliography should
convincingly demonstrate that your
paper will be based on sound, high-quality, and thorough
research. Additionally, it must
include, at minimum, the number and type of sources as detailed
above on page 1. Please
label each source by type (ie, scholarly, high quality web site,
other)
o An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books,

properly using MLA or APA format. Each citation is followed
by a brief, 1- to 2-paragraph
description of the source’s argument, relevance, accuracy, and
quality, which is the
