The Degenerate Art Movement
I'm going to be explaining 3 glass stores that I've grow up with; I have many experiences with all of
the stores, some I visit still while some have been just a few visits left for the past. They all are
targeting the same consumers just all on different levels of the same market segment. All of the
shops target people who buy glass whether they be glass pipes, glass marbles, glass sculptures, as
well custom metal jewelry in some. The Degenerate art movement has recently taken major interest
from many; recently a huge spike in new collectors, artists, as well many new galleries and stores.
The Degenerate Art Movement I am talking about is basically the glass blowers out there who are
going against the social norms. They are artists that are taking a medium used for art, and a medium
that has been used to make pipes and bongs and fuse the 2 ideas of art and pipes or water pipes into
one. They are using glass pipes as the way to portray their talent. To some they laugh at the fact, but
what they don't know is that there are water pipes out there selling for anywhere from $1,000 all the
way up to $30,000. To some they are recognized as modern day living Picasso's, and others just
dirty hippies making money off a drug culture. These artists don't just make pipes though; they make
things such as glass marbles where beautiful images and mind–bending ideas are encased for one to
view and enjoy forever. They make amazing things like cups and plates to eat off of. I've seen some

Exhibition Review – Dale Chihuly, the Halcyon Gallery
Dale Chihuly is an American artist, born September 20th, 1941 who is known for his glass
sculptures. One of his most well known pieces is the blue and green glass sculpture hanging in the
front entrance of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (figure 1). His work has included over
200 museum collections worldwide, and I visited his exhibition in the Halcyon Gallery on New
Bond Street in London on the 23rd of January 2012.
The entire exhibition was made up of glass sculptures fitting into several different genres created by
the artist; for example 'Seaforms', 'Persians', both created in the 1980's, and 'Fiori', which he created

As the pieces were 3D, standing out from the wall, interesting coloured shadows and highlights
were created with the lighting on the white walls. The viewers could walk beneath the pieces to
view the underneath of each bowl–like disc, and see the detail of different coloured glass swirled
into the piece. The curving edges of the discs created a natural feel to the piece, softening it.
Another part of the exhibition that I found visually stimulating were the 'Basket' themed pieces,
created in the 1970's, as I thought their smooth edges and insides captured and reflected the lights
really effectively (figures 8 and 9). I also really liked the multiple baskets stacked inside one
another, showing how Chihuly can handcraft the basket shapes on a variety of scales. The 'lip wrap'
on each basket is often a contrasting colour, developed from the tradition of Venetian glassmaking,
and is a trademark of Chihuly's work. I feel the bold colour lip wraps help to draw the viewer's eye
into the centre of the baskets, revealing the smaller baskets within.
I really liked the contrast in the colour of the two chandelier pieces in the windows of the Halcyon
Gallery (figures 10 and 11). The deep red and blues within the 'Cranberry and Clear Chandelier' and
the 'Dusky Sky Chandelier' draw the attention of passers–by, encouraging you to step closer and
view the intricacies of each handcrafted piece of the two chandeliers. I feel they were the ideal

The Museum Of Glass Art Movement
Robert Clark Palusky, b.1942 Duluth, MN, is a pioneer in the contemporary glass art movement.
A prolific artist, Palusky 's career in glass spans four decades. His work is featured in museums
around the world and celebrated in many world class private collections. Most prominent show to
date includes Tête à Tête: Figures Humaines (Ten Masters in Glass) a show featuring Palusky along
side Pablo Picasso, Salvidore Dali, and Jean Arp.
Typically, in order to see Palusky's artwork in person, you would have to travel to museums in
Switzerland, Japan or Spain, or in the U.S. to the Museum of Modern Art or the Corning Museum of
Glass. However, due to sheer luck, Palusky's work is on display right here in Saratoga Springs at the
Equine Gallery at Studio di Luce which benefits The Foal Project (www.foalproject.org). The
gallery is located at 480 Broadway on the main floor right next door to City Hall.
I've been blessed to know Robert Palusky (Bob) and his wife, Virginia (also an amazing artist in her
own right) for quite some time, and they have been great friends of the Foal Project as well. When
the Equine Gallery opened a few months ago, it only made sense to ask if I could showcase one of
his pieces, to highlight his work, and introduce this remarkable artist to the Saratoga community. I
was honored when he was kind enough to oblige. I had no idea which piece he would agree to send
to Saratoga, however, it was no surprise to discover there was a horse involved.

Dale Chihuly : Renowned Glass Artist
Dale Chihuly is internationally renowned glass artist. He was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1941.
While studying interior design at the University of Washington, he was introduced to glass. After
graduation in 1965, he enrolled at the University of Wisconsin into the first glass program in the
country, and went on to complete a graduate degree in sculpture. Later, he received a Fulbright
Fellowship in 1968, then went to work in Venice at the Venini glass factory. There he learned the
team approach to glass blowing, which is the way he still works today. Continuing his studies at the
Rhode Island School of Design, he eventually received a degree in ceramics, and established a glass
program there that he taught for more than a decade. In the early seventies, Chihuly cofounded
Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. Here he led the field in the development of glass as a
fine art. When he lost the sight in his left eye due to an automobile accident in 1976, he eventually
decided to delegate most of the actual glassblowing on his projects to others, and drawing then
became an important tool for communicating his ideas to his team. He has been the recipient of
many rewards, including two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Art, and his works
are included in more than 200 museum collections worldwide.
One of his earliest works, Pink and Opal Seafoam Set, 1981, 15 x 24 x 22", is a tribute to Chihuly's

Glassblowing The process of glassblowing can be a long but rewarding process. Many different
things can be made ranging from a simple Christmas ornament, to a work of art. Glassblowers use
many different techniques and tools to aid them in their jobs. Glassblowing is not an easy job, it
requires knowledge in what you're doing and the skill to not harm yourself or others.
Glass has a variety of unique properties. Glass is hard, very brittle, a good insulator, and does not
react to other chemicals easily. In addition to this, glass is considered an amorphous solid. This
means that the molecular structure of glass is mostly random. This is because in the process of
making glass, glass is cooled so quickly that it does not have time to form or create a structure at the
molecular level. This process is known as quenching. There are a variety of tools and equipment
used in the glassblowing process. Three of which consist of three very large furnaces. The first
furnace melts the glass and keeps the glass hot. The melted glass inside the first furnace is referred
to as batch. The furnace keeps the batch at over two–thousand one hundred degrees Fahrenheit. The
glassblower then takes a long pipe, about four feet long, and places it inside the furnace. In addition,
the glass pipe is heated to a really hot temperature so that the glass will adhere to the metal rod. If
the rod is not heated, the glass will not stick to the rod. The pipe used to collect the molten glass is

Virginia, the first of the thirteen English Colonies in the New World, was one of the Southern
Colonies. During the early national periods in Virginia, the colonists experienced extreme summers
that were very hot and humid and had mild winters. With the hot summers, it gave rise to the spread
of disease. Fertile soul and plentiful rain made Virginia a great place for farming. As well as fertile
soils, there were a lot of bays where ports could be made for trade. In the Western part of the
Virginia, the mountains and heavy woods made it hard to have big farms. Since they weren't able to

Tobacco was the first plantation crop raised by the Southern colonies. The labor requirements for

Oklahoma City Art Museum Essay
When I attend the Oklahoma Art Museum this morning, I was completely blown away by the
different styles, technique, and artistic abilities that artist have. Art can come in many forms and can
involve many different things. From paintings, sculptures, and abstract pieces of the modern world.
Along with my visit, I got to experience a new collection of blown glass that was absolute
remarkable. As I walked though the museum, it was as I walked though time and got to see how
each period's art changed throughout time. From the different shades of color to the different types
of technique that filled the halls of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, each piece was genuine in its
own way. I was starstruck as I witnessed Lowell Nesbitt's Parrot Tulip, Richard Diebenkorn's
Albuquerque, and Dale Chihuly's blown glass. The Parrot Tulip, by Lowell Nesbitt, was painted in
1973 and was made by oil based paint on a canvas. Nesbitt was a floral artist that spent most of his

furnace that was set to 600 degrees Celsius, however a faulty controller lets the temperature go up to

Age theories, or the occult (the supernatural). The truth is the emphasis on spiritual connection and

glass needs to be melted at a temperature of 2,200 degrees fahrenheit, which is equivalent to the

Roman Empire: Roman Bath Houses
In the first to the fourth centuries, Roman bath houses were built with large, windows which are
facing south to let in the sun's warmth. This was because they demanded a great amount of heat. In
the early Roman Empire most baths faced the afternoon sun in wintertime when they had the most
use. They also had their large windows covered with either transparent stone like mica or clear
glass, which was one of the great breakthroughs in architecture and solar technology.
(Links, 1999)The Romans discovered that transparent glass, acts as a solar heat trap, releasing
sunlight into the desired space and holding in the heat so it increases inside. They built glass
greenhouses so they could have fresh fruits and vegetables during the winter .The romans were one
of the first to use the element as a design tool. This was one of the first of examples for using glass
as a heat conductor within a building.
When the breakdown of the Roman Empire began, glassmaking technology perished in Europe to
the fact that it almost disappeared. Gothic cathedrals of the late 12th century and later featured
beautiful bits of coloured glasses, complex designs and were ridiculously expensive. (Design, 2014)

An Overview of Glass
One of the most used materials in human history is glass or more specifically silicate glass.
Although some types of glasses are called crystal glass, glass is actually an amorphous solid and
does not have a crystal structure. It is used in all walks of life ranging from homes to automobiles to
laboratories. Historically, the one of the first types of glass that was used by humans to make tools
and weapons was the volcanic glass known as obsidian. As for manmade glass, the earliest accounts
date back to 5000 BC in the middle east. Primitive methods of glass making were used until about
100BC, when glassblowing was believed to be discovered. This discovery made glass products
popular in the Roman Empire since the development of glassblowing allowed glass production to be
more efficient and thus less expensive. As the centuries went on more techniques were developed
which eventually lead to glass products being widespread. This paper will discuss some of the
methods of glass production throughout history, the types of silicate glass, and the different ways
that glass can be colored.
One of the early methods of glass making was called core forming. This technique made use of a
metal rod that had clay attached at one end. The end of the rod with the clay around it was either

In 1951, the Corning Museum of Glass was built. It was an L–shaped building that composed of the
non–for–profit Corning Museum of Glass, the for–profit Corning Glass Center, and the Steuben
Glass factory. The Corning Museum of Glass is an institution whose mission is "to tell the world
about glass by engaging, educating, and inspiring visitors and the community through the art,
history, and science of glass." Thanks to resources like the Juliette K. and Leonard S. Rakow
Research Library, this museum is able to spread knowledge about the art, history, and science of
glassmaking.
The museum was founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works as an educational institution. It is a non–
profit institution that preserves the world's glass and teaches about it. The initial building included a
Hall of Science that showcased the technology of glass. The Scientific Research Department of the
museum was established in order to study glassmaking and its' history. According to their website,
"The findings of this research have been shared in more than 190 publications on archaeology,
chemistry, and conservation of glass." The museum provides a searchable database for the public to
use in order to view these publications.
In June, 1972, "flood waters caused by Hurricane Agnes caused $750 million in property damage to
counties along the Southern Tier of New York State" (NY Times). This resulted in damaged rare
glass and working books, works shattered beyond repair, and mud–crusted glass. Much of
