greatly expanded during the current APR review period. It is directed by Professor of Surgery Marlys Witte, MD with the assistance of Michael
Bernas, MS as curriculum Coordinator, Grace Wagner as program Manager, and Peter Crown, PhD as multimedia producer.
A) Research Areas of Interest
The program provides individualized research experiences to medical students (30–45 yearly), undergraduates (15–20 yearly), and disadvantaged high
school students (30–40 yearly) and interacts with K–12 teachers largely from Arizona. The programs organize, supervise, mentor, and obtain funding
for the multilevel trainees in the full spectrum of biomedical research throughout the University of Arizona Health Sciences and beyond and also

Background: Impaired cognitive performance occurs in children with multiple sclerosis (MS). In adults, cognitive impairment (CI) is seen at the
time of first attack suggesting a prodrome of disease progression prior to first onset of physical disability. Children who develop multiple sclerosis
also have CI at time of diagnosis suggesting that actual disease onset occurs prior to manifestation of physical symptoms. It has not been reported
whether children who go on to develop a clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis are delayed in acquiring early developmental milestones.
Objective: To determine whether children with early onset MS are delayed in attaining early developmental milestones and whether children with MS
diagnosis prior to the age of 11 years are more likely to need special education services.
Methods: Pediatric–onset MS and cases and controls less than 18 years of age from 14 pediatric MS centers in the United States were studied. A
questionnaire on environmental and genetic influences was completed by family members, capturing information on demographic and developmental
history. Data on time of first walking unaided and acquisition of two word phrases were captured on MS and control groups. The need for special
education services was captured in MS subjects only.
Results: A total of 467 cases and 428 controls were enrolled. Patients with early onset MS prior to age 18 were not delayed in walking or using two
word phrases compared to healthy controls.

Charges of workplace discrimination is said to be at an all time high. During the 2015 fiscal year the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity released
information that claims there were more than 89,000 charges filed for workplace discrimination. One of the top ten charges is said to be retaliation,
which had an estimate 39,757 cases in 2015, which is 44.5 percent of all charges filed. Retaliation is said to be in violation of the Title VII of the

A radiologist is someone who looks at medical images (such as X–Rays, Computerized Tomography scans, ultrasounds, and Magnetic Resonance

In my field of biology, the prospective audience for a piece of writing will substantially affect the way an article is presented. A biology article can be
directed at a lay audience (such as an article on a new type of treatment or medicine for a popular magazine) or be highly technical and directed
towards an audience of researchers in a peer–reviewed journal. In most cases, there are multiple types of audiences primary and secondary, as well as
the 'gatekeeper' who approves the article and the larger 'watchdog' audience screening the article post–publication (Locker & Kaczmarek21). This
multiplicity of audiences is perhaps most starkly evident in biology publications pertaining to nutrition.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is primarily directed to an audience of biology professionals in the field who specifically focus on
nutrition. It also has a subset of primary audience readers who are clinical nutritionists, public policy makers, and professionals in the field of nutrition
(like sports physiologists). There is also a larger 'watchdog' group of the media and various professional dietary–related agencies who frequently read
