Voip Research Paper
With so much technology and applications being developed these days, there is one technology that
seems to be touching people's lives since it was introduced. What technology is that? It is Voice over
Internet Protocol or VoIP for short. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, he
had no idea that his invention would morph into what it has become today. This paper is describing
how VoIP was created, its industry trends, technological developments, and how VoIP is utilized.
(Background A)VoIP is the transmission of voice communications and multimedia sessions over the
internet instead of the public switch telephone network or PTSN (1704.02440). In 1989, an Israeli–
born entrepreneur named Alon Cohen, is credited with the beginnings ... Show more content on

VoIP is vulnerable to attacks just like any other network protocol. Attacks against availability,
attacks against confendentiality, attacks against integrity, and attacks against social contest. Attacks
against avalabilty include such things as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, Call Flooding, Malformed
Messages, Spoofed Messages, Call Hijacking, and QoS Abuse (1312.2225). A DoS attack is just like
it sounds, when an attacker is trying to deny a service or resource by flooding the resource with
bogus request to overwhelm the resource or service. Call flooding is when the attacker is flooding a
VoIP server, client or infrastructure with heavy traffic to bring down the system (1312.22225). A
malformed message is when an attacker is creating malformed messages with the wrong syntax and
sending it to the server or client to confuse the server or client (1312.22225). A spoofed message is
when an attacker is inserting fake (spoofed) messages to a VoIP session to steal or interrupt the
session (1312.222225). Call hijacking is when an attacker takes over some transactions between the
VoIP endpoint and the network (1312.222225). QoS abuse when an attacker messes with the
element that are negotiated between the VoIP endpoints

Graduation Speech: Voip Bridge Agreement
Good morning, Now that the dust has settled from transition weekend (though it hasn't completely
settled yet), I'd like to take a moment to welcome everyone to the new ITIP Bridge contract. We
have been blessed to have a couple more years working for the TSA. Along with the Bridge, there
have obviously been a myriad of other changes happening at the same time and it is a testament to
the hard work and commitment displayed by each of you that we were able to come through all of
this with only the smallest of hiccups. Since I have your attention for a moment, I would like to go
over a couple brief topics and set a few expectations for all of us going forward Vigilance I wanted
this to be the first topic because I believe it's the most important. We have a serious job of
supporting an agency which is responsible for protecting the ... Show more content on

One large change is Networking Services is now responsible for Smart Hands support at Ashburn
and has a dedicated team of professionals manning that site. They will be responsible, as we have
already seen this previous weekend, for more than just network devices. Additionally, the eTAS–
Kronos group has been brought under Networking Services along with Ashburn Support and the
VOIP team. In practice, little will change for these groups as they are already operating at level of
excellence that I am positive they will maintain. Work Habits Let's start the new contract right with
taking care of the small things. Be on time for your shift and stay until the end. Communicate
absences with as much advanced notice as possible. Any work from home procedures you may have
previously followed should be considered void. Work from home should never be assumed and must
be directly authorized. Normally, if you're going to be out you will need to burn PTO or sick time as
appropriate. It is important both for professional and perceptional reasons to be at our desk doing

Future of VoIP Technology Essay
Future of VoIP Technology
VoIP is a relatively new technology and so the benefits are just beginning to be realized. VoIP
technology has the ability to completely change the telephone industry as we know it. Big changes
are in store for the way we use telephones and this section will address some of the changes to
expect. Obstacles still stand in the way of progression and there are problems that need to be
addressed before this technology can take over.
Individuals have some great things to look forward to. Many already communicate over the internet
for free (not including ISP cost) in a simple fashion by chat rooms, instant messaging, and email.
Some are already using VoIP to replace their current telephone provider due to the lower ... Show

Companies can get multiple locations serviced and communicate to each of the locations as if they
were all located in the same building; with only an extension number. Digital music can be uploaded
to a server and replayed for calls that are on hold. Eventually each employee will be able to use their
PDA cell phone for both business and personal calls. The phone will connect to the Wi–Fi network
in the building and all calls will be forwarded to the IP address of that phone. "More than half of
network managers from organizations with 500 or more employees plan to implement VoIP products
or services during the next year." (VoIPWatch.com) Businesses have some great opportunities to
gain from switching to VoIP and should start to look and determine whether it is right for them.
One of the largest obstacles VoIP needs to overcome is the issue of security. Just taking a look into
the email of any person can show why this is the case. Spam is rampant in email and VoIP phones
would be subject to the same spam problems. Scripts could be written to call numbers and speak or
play the ad on the user's cell phone. This could wreak havoc without proper laws and measures
implemented to prevent this. There is also the issue of hackers gaining access to calls over the
Internet. "VoIP devices such as IP phones, Call Manager, Gateways, and Proxy servers inherit the
same vulnerabilities of the operating system or firmware they run on top of." (Intrusion

VoIP systems implementation challenges consist of interoperability between multiple voice and data
standards; networks transmission characteristics and protocols; regulatory guidelines and
maintenance issues. (voip.com, 2006). These exist on top of connection used over satellite to
Riordan's China location.
One of the critical drawbacks of VoIP service is its dependence upon another service, an Internet
connection. The quality and overall reliability of the phone connection is entirely reliant upon the
quality, reliability, and speed of the internet connection which it is using. (Wikipedia, 2006)
Global Implications of VoIP There will be lot of challenges posed to the existing regulatory
frameworks and rules by the VoIP and thereby is considered a truly disruptive technology. VoIP
must be regulated like the telecommunications industry. Thus, from legacy to VoIP there is more to
consider with an enterprise WAN to support 4 locations.
There are several regulatory issues that concern VoIP technology. IP phones may not provide the
reliability, identification, and proper routing of the emergency calls, but all public
telecommunications operators provide a service which receives emergency calls and routes them to
the nearest emergency call centre. In an age of global terrorism, the calls made from the IP phones
are only digital packets

Voice Over Internet Protocol Term Paper
Introduction
Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a technology that offers voice communications using the
existing Internet protocols. Over the years the Internet has developed as a very cheap medium that
has been used to send electronic mails and files across the globe. VoIP extends this concept and
provides the facility to send voice data between people using the IP framework. Since the Internet is
a cheap medium, enabling voice services through it will effectively cut costs that are normally
encountered in making calls through normal telephone lines. This would mean that people across the
world can talk to each other at a fraction of the cost that they could be spending when they use
normal telephone lines. This is exactly what makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How VoIP functions
At the basic level, VoIP functions much like the common Internet services that are available today.
Voice data is received at one end of the IP network and is compressed, digitized, and broken down
into data packets with unique serial numbers. A universal lookup table or an IP reference table helps
the server at the call originating end to find out the IP of the receiver to whom the call is placed.
Once the IP is resolved, data is sent to the destination IP much in the same fashion that emails and
web data is transferred across the network. The data packets that are received at the destination end
is collected, arranged according to sequence numbers, and converted back to analog signals so that
the receiver can hear the voice. VoIP is possible between two computers, between two telephones
that are connected to a network or even between a computer and a telephone. This means that a
person with a PC can originate a call to a landline or vice versa [Jain, 2004]

• Voice and Data Integration
VoIP is a definite step towards integration of voice and data; a need that has been increasingly
researched since the last few decades. Integration of voice and data would mean that data transfer
can be controlled effectively thereby making data manipulation faster and more secure. VoIP will

Voip Security
Abstract
Over the past decade, the Department of Defense (DoD) has transitioned from its older public–
switched telephone network (PSTN) network to an almost total Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
network. They are being adopted by DoD because they offer higher flexibility, more features, and
lower costs than the traditional PSTN infrastructure. However, VoIP systems also represent a higher
complexity in terms of architecture, protocols, and implementation, with a corresponding increase in
the potential for misuse. This case study examines the current state of affairs on DoD VoIP security
through research of known/disclosed/potential eavesdropping and interception threats to DoD
systems. This paper should serve as a starting point for understanding ... Show more content on

A signaling protocol, such as session initiation protocol (SIP), performs the legwork: locating users,
call parameters, modifications and building or ending a session. A media transport protocol, like real
time transport protocol (RTP) handles the data portion of a connection, which includes digitizing,
encoding and ordering. Networking protocols, such as IP, are wrapped around the VoIP packets
when they are transmitted through the proper servers to the end user.
VoIP communication can take occur on both LANs or on WANs, as is the case with internal calls on
a corporate network. If a VoIP user wishes to call a destination on PSTN, a special gateway is used.
These devices act as connectors between the data network and the SS7 network used by POTS. They
translate the incoming data into a format the recipient, be it IP or SS7, can understand.

Therefore, you can optimize network performance without increasing bandwidth (Ganguly). The
first order of business is to perform a complete network assessment. Most businesses know that
VoIP runs over a network and that a VoIP system needs to be designed such that voice traffic runs as
smoothly over it as it does over the traditional phone system. What many businesses do not realize
are the network requirements for VoIP to operate correctly. The quality of a phone call can be
impacted by issues such as having the right type of cabling (cat 5e or 6 is recommended), and
ensuring that switches, not hubs, are deployed within a customer's network, and that all routing and
switching CPE support QoS (CIO). Additional details can include whether a company has a firewall,
and whether the ports that permit the two most common VoIP protocols SIP and MGCP ports are
blocked. In addition, reviewing internal network needs, a review of the network connectivity will be
used to deliver VoIP should occur. Network connections should be over dedicated circuits if more
than one phone call are to be supported, but the shared nature of other technologies such as ATM,
Frame relay, and cable connections tend to cause quality issues that would not otherwise be noticed
as a user utilizes the network (Bandwidth). Next, I will perform a complete business flow design.

8.8. Spam over IP telephony (SPIT) Spam over IP telephony (SPIT), includes prerecorded,
spontaneous messages sent to your VoIP handset. SPIT owes its presence to the standard
correspondences convention called Session Initiated Protocol (SIP). Taste recognizes the vicinity of
a VoIP handset. Dialer projects can convey a spontaneous modified message, and have a superior
possibility of a beneficiary grabbing the call (Phithakkitnukoon, 2008). SPIT conveys with it
different dangers, for example, DoS assaults, and the unapproved utilization of assets (data transfer
capacity), making SPIT substantially more than an annoyance. SPIT 's belongings are decreased by
a strong patch administration arrangement, VoIP empowered firewalls are likely equipped for
recognizing SPIT, and make a verification instrument to distinguish genuine approved guests. To put
it plainly, the rationality of battling SPIT is fundamentally the same to current day routines used to
battle SPAM; it is difficult to stop it, you can dare to dream to control it. 8.9. More ports open =
more ports to secure While the base hardware may stay unaltered, VoIP muddles system activity

VoIPAdoption at Butler University Essay
Case Study
The VoIP Adoption at Butler University
What were the primary reasons for changing the current system at Butler?
The primary reason that Butler University decided to change their current system was due to the fact
that their original provider was not fulfilling the university's needs. Butler had originally used
Centrex as their service provider. Centrex, being an older system, could not provide Butler
University with the modern, more up to date features that they needed. The Centrex system was
based on features that were over a decade old, and customizing this system was done easily by any
means. Butler began to expand and certain departments began to expand. This caused issues with the
current Centrex system because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main objectives of the pilot program were to test the new features and to gain feedback from
people using the new system. Six weeks before the new system went live, Butler set up 40 phones
with department coordinators and high–level staff to test the new system. Over three weeks they
tested the system and gathered information to help improve the system if need by. The overall goal
of the pilot program was to 'gain buy–in from the user community'. Obviously when establishing a
new program, there is bound to be some problems and bugs. For instance, Butler encountered a
software bug that caused immense stress to the staff and the system developers. Some of the issues
caused by the software bug were random server reboots, lost phone numbers, voicemail
malfunctions, and a problem with all of the multiline phones.
Do you think Butler made the right decision to utilize this new technology? What implications does
this decision hold for Butler's IT department in the long run?
Yes I believe that Butler made the right decision to utilize this new technology. The system that they
were using before was outdated and was not performing to the standards that Butler needed. The
VoIP system that Butler decided to implement was a great decision to help improve the features that
the Centrex system before lacked in. Although the VoIP system they established was a great idea, it
was rather expensive compared to the Centrex system they were running before.

Article Review of 'VoIP Definition and Solution'
VoIP Technology
This essay evaluates an analysis presented in an article discussing voice over Internet protocol
(VoIP) technology. The article, "VoIP Definition and Solutions," written by PCWorld and CIO
author and editor Thomas Wailgum, describes how VoIP works, its capabilities and its applications.
The article examined the treatment of VoIP topics including its definition, objectives, systems and
solutions.
The term voice over IP refers to a technology that carries voice calls over an IP network by
digitizing and packetizing voice streams. Closely related to IP telephony and Internet telephony,
VoIP technology allows analog communications to be routed over data networks that include wide
area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs), and the Internet. Combining voice and data on
one network can offer the Army potential telecommunications savings and efficiencies, but there are
challenges that come with maintaining network capability, reliability, flexibility and security.
Callers connect to VoIP technology in three ways. One method uses a regular telephone, along with
a fast Internet connection, and for the individual soldier placing a call, an analog telephone adapter
or ATA. The ATA converts analog voice signals into digital packets of data to be sent over the
Internet. This application of VoIP technology is easy to set up and use, and is frequently used by
VoIP consumers.
The Army, which has many users on traditional telephones, would need to use a specialized

The first company that comes to mind when we talk about VOIP is Vonage. Like phone companies,
Vonage offers phone service. However, Vonage performs this service over your existing internet
connection. They will give you any number from any state you wish and even give you fake
numbers called virtual phone numbers for an extra five dollars a month. They offer all the same
features as a regular phone service with some extras such as auto forwarding when your connection

A second company involved in this area is Avaya. Avaya, unlike Vonage, is a telecommunications

to provide the service to others or yourself. Their first major attempt at this is using a current
product called IP Office. The IP Office solution is made for the small business environment in which
you can layout just a couple pf phones and some Avaya switches that all communicate using VOIP
on Ethernet cables. The new digital phones that come with the system use an LCD type display
which can log calls and change pages at the push of a button. Phones can be logged in or out at
random locations to be moved anywhere within the office. Management of the system itself can be
done over a web browser or you can use the software that comes with the system. The IP Office
system may not be rich in features but it can provide many of the same comforts as a regular phone
system. These days Avaya has also changed their PBX boxes to include a lot of the VOIP options
with all those nice features they had with their previous G3 systems.

Staying with the current plan The current plan entails the implementation of the Phase II Plan, which
entails the development of an intensive marketing strategy aimed at attracting more small business
entities to purchase the commodities offered by the company. According to the management
function of the company, the plan has the potential to enhance the performance of the company.
However, the leadership function of the company, particularly the board of directors, share the
sentiment that the company should have already attained the breakeven point; hence, the plan should
not be executed. From a critical perspective, the company has reduced its revenue losses since the
execution of the Phase I Plan; thus, there is a likelihood that the second phase will result in the
attainment of the breakeven point. The company reported a loss of $88,000 in 2005, and it predicted
the loss margin to go down to $66,000 in 2006 ("VoIP.biz, Inc.," 2007). Analysts in the business
have already revealed that the VoIP supplier process has a high potential of gaining popularity as
business entities start looking into developing affordable data

Advantages
VoIP phone service providers o er many advantages to the residential and small oce/home oce
user. If you have a high speed internet connection then choosing a VoIP phone service might be right
for you.
1. Low Cost :
This technology leads to greater nancial savings. This happens because there exists only one
network carrying the voice and video provided by only one supplier. If you have a broad– band
Internet connection (DSL or cable), you can make PCtoPC phone calls anywhere in the world for
free. If you wish to make a PC to phone connection, there's usually a charge for this but probably
much cheaper than your regular phone service. You can pay as you go or you can sign up with a
VOIP service provider and pay a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Low Taxes :
Since the calls are being carried over the Internet, governments have not heavily taxed VoIP phone
services. Compare that to your local telephone bill (go ahead and take a close look) and you will see
you are spending quite a bit on taxes each month. Therefore, choosing a
VoIP provider could add up to signi cant savings for you and your family.
3. Portability :
One important concept to understand about VoIP is that unlike its forefathers (lets call them
PSTN for now), it is not distance or location dependent. As far as VoIP is concerned, you could be
calling your supplier 1,000 miles away in Indonesia or calling your business partner on the other end
of town, and it doesnt make any di erence at all, in terms of connectivity and cost. You can make and
receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection simply by signing in to your VoIP
account. This makes VoIP as convenient as email if you are traveling, simply pack a headset or
Internet phone and you can talk to your family or business associates for almost nothing.
4. No extra cables, no extra cost :
A VoIP phone number, unlike your regular phone number, is completely portable. Most commonly
referred to as a virtual number, you can take it with you anywhere you go.

that travels over the internet. VoIP sends voice data in packets using IP rather than traditional circuit
transmissions.
One of the well known VoIP provider is perhaps Vonage. Vonage is a commercial voice over IP
network that provides telephone service using a broadband connection. Based in Edison, New
Jersey, Vonage offers services to subscribers throughout the United States. It expanded into Canada
in April 2004, and into the United Kingdom in early 2005.Vonage offers unlimited calling to the US
and Canada for a flat monthly fee, with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though there is a cost for internet service, using VOIP over this service may not involve any
extra charges, so the users view the calls as free.
With VoIP you can also get more features. Current VoIP service providers offer all–inclusive calling
plans that provide consumers with unlimited local, regional and long distance flat rates at costs that
are significantly cheaper than PSTN services. Additionally, VoIP services include features such as
name and number caller ID, call forwarding, call blocking, and voice mail as standard features.
Whereas, traditional phone companies typically charge premiums for these features. According to
CNet.com editor Neil Randall says voice quality is so good that it can easily replace a traditional
phone line. While some providers only provide e–mail customer service, Vonage offers both online
and phone support.
Business and consumers are already taking advantage of the cost savings and new features however
some larger companies are withdrawing away from VOIP because it costs too much to replace their
telephone systems. Since large companies have a large capital investment they cannot afford to get
rid of their old phone systems. However smaller companies have older analog based systems and are
migrating to VOIP.
Despite the price advantage of VoIP and

ABSTRACT
A simulation model is presented to analyze and evaluate the performance of VoIP based integrated
wireless LAN/WAN with taking into account various voice encoding schemes. The network model
was simulated using OPNET Modeler software. Different parameters that indicate the QoS like
MOS, jitter, end to end delay, traffic send and traffic received are calculated and analyzed in
Wireless LAN/WAN scenarios. Depending on this evaluation, Selection codecs G.729A consider the

INTRODUCTION
During the recent years, there is a growing trend in real–time voice communication using Internet
protocol (IP). Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that allows delivery of voice
communications over the Internet or other packet switched networks rather than the traditional
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Many VoIP applications are available on the internet:
Skype, Viber, Tango, and Yahoo messenger. All of these applications provide good quality and free
calls. In VoIP, the analog voice signal from the transmitter is converted into the digital format before
compression and encoding it into a stream of IP packets for transmission to the receiver over IP
network. At the receiving end,

Voice over Internet Protocol
Definition of VoIP
Mr. Watson, come here, I want you! These were the first words that were spoken over the phone
back on March 10 1876. If you combine this invention with the same invention of the first computer
that was completed nearly 70 years later in 1946, you would then be able to access VoIP. VoIP is
also known as voice over internet protocol. VoIP is in essence the ability to talk with ones voice via
computer to computer. In the next few pages you will learn about the history of VoIP, how it works,
the requirements that are needed to use VoIP, the benefits and risks of this type of technology, and
lastly you will get a glimpse at the future of VoIP.
Not many people know what VoIP is or even that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With the introduction of Ethernet services the quality was able to get better. There was better clarity
but there were still some bugs due to static and difficulty making connections.
In the beginning VoIP traffic represented rather less than 1% of voice traffic. In 1998 three IP switch
manufacturers introduced equipment capable of switching (intertangent, 2005). With these
implementations by the year 2000 the voice traffic had risen only two more percent to 3%. This is
not a huge leap but there are many advances that are still being made and the numbers will continue
to grow.
The real breakthrough occurred when such systems like Cisco Systems and Nortel started producing
VoIP equipment that was capable of switching (Viopreview, 2005). With the introduction of
switching it was no longer the CPU's responsibility to switch the voice packets. With the
introduction of the new switching this made it to where the computer did not require specific
hardware to be able to use VoIP. When the switches were introduced this made the hardware cheaper
and allowed larger companies to be able to implement their calls via the internet.
VoIP has not really caught on with the general public, but has been primarily used by large
corporations. The general public does not really search out things such as this because they
sometimes become complacent in their day to day life. On the other hand, large companies will

New Voip Phone System At The Company 's Campus Essay
As the project manager for the IT department, the project of deploying a new VoIP phone system to
the company's campus has been assigned. The campus consists of three different buildings, each
with twenty to fifty workstations. The project must be completed in 90 calendar days starting on
November 1. Budget The IT department has been given a budget of $25,000 to complete the project.
The budget includes the equipment, the installation, all software and licensure used to operate and
maintain the VoIP throughout all three (3) buildings. An estimate is required if outsourcing to a local
installation company is decided upon. The estimate must be approved by the President or CEO of
the company before any work is performed or started. Human Resources The human resources put
in place would include the President or CEO of the company, the CIO (Chief Information Officer),
the CFO (Chief Financial Officer); the IT manager, the IT Administrator, and the Network Engineer.
It is up to these guys to figure out the best way and the best route to take in order to get the signals
for VoIP across all three (3) buildings while staying within the budget. Since the buildings are pretty
close together, maybe looking at Point–to–Point would be ideal for this small company. Point–to–
Point may also be the cheapest way to go with such a small company of 20 to 50 workstations per
building. It may be even better to outsource the work through a local installation company that the
company approves of.

Internet Protocol ( Voip )

Management Task 1
VOIPs Project
Western Governors University
EXPLANATION
Our proposed voice over internet protocol (VOIP) phone system is powered by Cisco. It is consist of
several hardware and software devices. The most basic piece of hardware to be used is the Cisco
PBX. This device cost $6000. It supports a surplus of over 1000 extensions. The company has got
an approximate 120 users of the old IP telephony system. In this regard three Cisco catalyst switch
(POE) 48 ports will be needed. Such a switch cost $893.93 each. Three EnGenius EGS7252FP
switches will be interconnected with trunk ports along each other supporting 144 VOIPS extensions
in the network. (amazon, 2015)
Furthermore, 120 Cisco SPA 502G ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The initial cost for phone, system equipment, networking equipment and IP handsets is
approximately $30,000. This is a direct purchase and will be incurred as a one–time cost. Similarly,
the licenses provided by Cisco are one–time costs and provide voicemail services, unified
messaging services, SIP trunk access and endpoint access for physical telephone handsets as well as
soft phone clients. The cost to purchase these licenses comes to approximately $18,000 and will be
incurred later in the phase of development. (voiplink, 2015)
Additionally, during the first phase of the project there will be costs associated with consulting,
installation and training. These costs are a bit more flexible than the hardware and licensing costs,
because the amount of training provided to end–users is up to the company to decide. A reasonable
estimate for initial training is $12,000 with a 10% recurring cost each year.
Consulting and installation fees are being calculated at $10,000 with a 10% recurring annual cost for
additional consulting. The largest recurring cost will be for SIP trunk services, to provide telephone
access for calls outside the organization. The annual cost for 120 SIP trunks is approximately
$35,000 but future analysis may dictate a reduction in the number of trunks required. Since this
potential reduction in SIP services cannot be accurately calculated at this time, the recurring annual
cost is being estimated for the full amount of $35,000. This

I work for the military where VOIP and SIP are utilized regularly and are considered highly secure
because they use dedicated lines that are not available to the public. These lines use point of access
control, mac address verification, software security programs, software and hardware firewalls, and
are actively monitored. For example, if someone were to plug an unauthorized device into a port
using one of these lines, within a minute or less they would be locked out of the system with their
location being sent to the personnel who monitor the line. Does this mean the line is completely
secure? Of course not, every system is vulnerable in some way, even systems that do not touch the

Additionally, I would request that the Company issue Common Access Cards (CAC) to any member
of the organization that would be using the VoIP system. On the CAC cards the users would have a
unique set of certificates matched to the organizations VoIP security software allowing them access,
however, the CAC cards alone would not be sufficient for identification. The users would be
required to input a strong password that they set to their CAC card at the point of issue. This
password would be an additional method of identification that was known only to the original
recipient of the card. I would also request that active monitoring of the VoIP network be assigned to
a member of the IT team to ensure no unauthorized devices were linked to the network.
Additionally, this IT member would be required to run intrusion and antimalware detection software
on the system and ensure that it is maintained at the highest state of readiness. This involves running
checks of the system constantly to ensure no unauthorized devices have been linked into the system,
verification of the integrity of the VoIP tunnel and monitoring the system to verify connectivity, and
software integrity. The easiest layer to add for mitigating risk over the VoIP network is the users
themselves. Sure we have given the users access Tokens allowing them to choose a complex
password that only they know, but we also must educate the users. Through education we can teach

Voice Of Voice Over Internet Protocol
Abstract
When Voice over Internet Protocol was being introduced, it was perfectly engineered to work using
the existing model and infrastructure without bearing huge cost. VoIP uses Internet Protocol to
connect, transmit and terminate the calls. Most of the industry is using VoIP services to connect their
offices locally, in different cities and in different countries. VoIP enables User/client to place a
telephonic call to their offices/friends/families. This paper will focus on how VoIP works and what
are the security concerns. Also the industry's concern about Quality of Service (QoS) and will
discuss about threats in general.
Introduction
IP is used for data communication and for Voice Dialogue exchanged between two parties, is also
carried on the same data network. Data network could be a private network (Local offices within a
city or many cities in the same country/region and also using IPLC's to connect other
countries/continents) or on Internet by creating Hard/soft VPN tunneling in between the offices. In
general discuss it is considered on the Internet only but it being used by creating point to point
connect using Wireless or only data connectivity between two office. Using Internet to transmit VoIP
traffic is very inexpensive as compared to Local data connectivity or using your IPLC. Phone calls
are placed using VoIP over any kind of data connectivity. The simplest way of VoIP communication
is, when both the parties can receive and make calls using internet.

Aside from lessening infrastructure, maintenance, and service costs, a VoIP phone system can help
doctors and patients reduce costs associated with regular office visits.
Using a VoIP phone system can have tremendous cost–saving benefits with its plethora of features
that can help reduce expenses on equipment and service. Because VoIP operations over the Internet,
hospitals can take advantage of this function to reduce monthly phones or avoid any recurring
charges that are associated with a plain old telephone service (POTS).
Hospitals can also reduce international and long distance call charges by using an access number
(commonly know as direct inward dialing (DID) or virtual number), these are numbers that are
programmed to route or transfer incoming calls to one of the preset telephone numbers. With the use
of a virtual number, a hospital can create a local presence anywhere in the world. In this way, when
doctors and medical staff make and receive international or long distance calls, the caller will be
charged with the local call rate because the DID remains intact regardless of the

Application Of A Voip System
Kincaid the CIO of Butler University began looking into options to help with the dilemmas of the
current system they had in place. The Information Resources group from Butler received approval to
start a 3–year plan on the upgrade or convergence of the telecommunications systems and networks.
This could result in an upgrade of the Centrex system or the use of an in house VOIP PBX system.
If they were to use the PBX system, the university would have control of its features and
customization. The main thing was that VOIP was sure to solve the problems they were already
dealing with. On the contrary, VOIP was new and it had its drawbacks as well. They feared possible
risks of security, example viruses. In addition, proving it useful to new users given it was still
subsequently new technology.
Here are some advantages of having a VOIP system in place in a business. One that is most
advantageous is that it runs of the internet. Most businesses, if not all uses the internet, so the use of
communication is available. Secondly, would the cost savings of using VOIP over the use of a
traditional analog system. However, the savings would depend on what services a business uses.
Thus, a business should do a cost analysis report so they can get the savings and services they need
to make their company more sufficient (Tan, 2011). Another advantage is the multiple ways of
communication. Some services are computer based. All one would need is a microphone attached to

CASE STUDY I–2 VoIP2.biz, Inc.: Deciding on the Next Steps for a VoIP Supplier
Lawrence R. Milkowski, President and CEO of VoIP2.biz, Inc., an Indianapolis–based start–up
supplier of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony to the small and midsize business market,
knew he had a difficult job ahead of him. It was Friday, June 23, 2006, and he had to prepare his
recommendations on the next steps for his fledgling company to the board of directors at its meeting
on Tuesday, June 27, 2006. While Larry was a firm believer in the direction of the company, he
knew that the board was anxious to resolve the future of the firm given the slower–than–hoped–for

engineering, installation, and marketing services to telecommunications carriers throughout the
United States. By utilizing HSC's services, carriers were able to speed implementation of new
customer services, such as DSL, and reduce costs by outsourcing central office engineering and
equipment assembly. As a service provider to the carriers, HSC was in a unique position to
understand and review new telecommunications technology prior to its general availability. In 2003,
engineers at HSC started to investigate broadband applications, including video and voice over
internet protocol (VoIP) applications. During 2004, Milkowski and other personnel in HSC explored

FCC’s Take on IP-Interconnection for VoIP Essay example
VoIP technology provides voice services similar to that of TDM technology over IP based network.
VoIP service providers need access to the PSTN to terminate calls to recipients not subscribed to the
VoIP provider's service. They have to pay PSTN operators for call switching and routing to
terminate the calls. The telephony provider has to interconnect its network with other networks in
order to deliver numerous customers at home and offices as well as provide valuable network for
businesses. Interconnection results in end–to–end connectivity for provisioning of services to enable
communication. Today's telecommunication networks are moving beyond the traditional PSTN into
IP networks which are the next–generation networks (NGN). PSTN and ... Show more content on

With this paper, I would like to provide a brief overview of IP–interconnection; the issues in IP–
interconnection and suggest my views on the possible measures that FCC could adopt.
Understanding Interconnection The current scenario of VoIP requires conversion of IP voice signals
to TDM format to be used over traditional PSTN network. Thus, an interconnection between PSTN
and IP is required. However, understanding of interconnection within PSTN and IP networks will
provide a fair idea about the requirements for interconnection in each network. Within PSTN
network, the service layer and transport layer functions are not separate as in case of only IP
networks. The physical interconnection for PSTN is decided by the nature of service to be provided
and thus these two functions are interdependent while in IP, the transport and service functions form
a part of separate layers in TCP/IP model. This difference in the basic core structure has to be
considered to interconnect these two different kinds of networks. Figure 1 Interconnection between
PSTN and IP based network. Adapted from GSR 2009 (Gelvanovska, Alden, 2009, P.5) The above
diagram gives a brief idea about the blocks required for the interconnection. Direct communication
between PSTN and IP based networks is not possible owing to the differences in their method

Explain Why A Small Business Should Make The Switch From...
Many small to medium–size businesses might be wondering if they should make the switch from
PBX to VoIP? Are there real benefits to a smaller company making a switch like this? For anyone
starting a business, making sure you have a dependable phone connection can make or break your
company. Network computers see the completion of much work, but most offices can't do away with
phones for the need of daily communication with customers. Here's some other reasons a small to
medium business might benefit from transitioning to VoIP.
Easy to Install, Maintain and Expand
VoIP phones require little technical knowledge when it comes to installation. Instead of having
someone run phone wiring through a facility, you can set up the VoIP phone, which installs fast and
requires little maintenance. In addition, as your company grows, the cost to add new users is
minimal, and it doesn't take to scale your business up as it grows. Try that with a PBX, and your
company will pay a lot more to install more phone lines. Over the next year, you don't know how
many phone lines you might need. With a traditional phone system, you have to exercise caution not
to buy phone lines you might never use. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ABSTRACT
Designing and embedding a watermark for VoIP is the main goal of this paper, A new model is
introduced and characterized by high robustness, high security and must be non–perceptual. The
watermarking model is suitable for real–time service and supports the needs of embedding the
watermark into the traffic of VoIP and its extraction additionally this model offers authentication and
integrity. The model based on digital watermarking and steganography. Another factor was taken in
consideration; the amount of data used and its influence on the voice quality of service. the model is
implemented using C# code for both embedding and extracting the watermarking spite of the
intended cheating mechanisms that might complicate the send/receive conditions. In addition, the
model performance has confirmed its robustness and quality of service.

It is very important to know what type of connection is suitable for the users to communicate.
VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) is a service that allows users to interact, send and receive the
users voice. VoIP is considered as a service and in order for it to function correctly; the network
administrator must consider the entire users situation. This service allows us to make phone calls to
land lines and mobile phones around the world over Internet packets.
Like anything else, VoIP has its benefits and drawbacks and ways to improve the service. A solution
is introduced as IRIS at the end of the research with a conclusion.
VoIP:
Voice over Internet Protocol has the same result as a normal telephone line but the main difference is
in the architecture design. VoIP services communicate over a digital network rather than traditional
telephone line. Data is being sent and received as packets. Packets are not encrypted and other
users might be able to listen to the users conversation. In this case the administrator needs to set the
servers default to encrypt the packets.
When two users are having a conversation on the phone, bandwidth is very important. Normally a
VoIP service that has been installed on a GSM network uses 531 Kilobytes/min (or 8.85
Kilobytes/Sec) of the networks bandwidth. From this, we know now this service cannot take place
on a 56 kbps dial–up

INTRODUCTION A significant amount of research efforts have been directed towards attempts at
providing high quality service for real time applications of IP based networks in the past decade.
The core idea of these techniques is to control the IP network congestion level which is the main
cause of delays/losses, and also imposes upper bounds on these events. Traffic policing is one of the
techniques used for this purpose. These techniques makes the assumption that users generating
flows/calls will specify the setup time by using Service Level Agreement (SLAs) i.e. the
characteristics of the traffic that they emit to the network. Therefore, these techniques are employed
to ensure that the generated traffic is within the conforms of previously agreed contracts. One of the
most popular traditional traffic policing techniques is the Leaky Bucket (LB). Average rate and the
maximum burst size/length of a

Nwabueze | Skype versus ATamp;T and the Future of Telecommunications | 4/8/2012 | Prepared
by: James Whetsel

Executive Summary
This report was written to analyze the competition among the Voice–over Internet Protocol (VoIP)
industry segment, especially as it relates to the relationship between Skype and ATamp;T and the
competition between the VoIP market and the land line market. In analyzing this segment we found
that VoIP is a growing industry in what has historically been predominately a land line
telecommunication company such as ATamp;T.
The industry segment is faced with a rivalry type competitive market that is ... Show more content

With a roughly 5 percent market share by the end of 2010, VoIP was still a small competitor in the
industry.
A major opportunity for VoIP providers was to capitalize on the cellular market. Experts predicted
that, by 2019, half of all mobile calls would be over IP networks. The IP connections would be
available through VoIP applications that ran through a cellular device. Mobile VoIP applications are
expected to reach 278 million users, generating a $32.2 billion profit.
What does the five forces analysis reveal about the chances for profitability in the VoIP industry?3
1. Current sellers competing in the market * It's been good times to be a VoIP user, and bad ones to
be Skype. * To a great extent, up until now Skype has had a lock on the consumer P2P VoIP market,
and even though it's recent move into business VoIP hasn't been universally well–received, things
looked rosy for the company in that market as well. * But a trio of competitors makes the future less
rosy for Skype. Yahoo, the well–financed startup Jajah, and the big Web site Lycos have all released
no–cost or low–cost VoIP P2P solutions recently, attempting to muscle in on Skype.
2. Threat of new competitors' market entry * Possibly the most intriguing of the group is the
European–based Jajah. The service requires no client to

VoIP: A New Frontier for Security and Vulnerabilities Essay
VoIP: A New Frontier for Security and Vulnerabilities
Introduction to Voice over IP Technology
The promise of extremely cheap telephone service, utilizing the Internet to transmit voice, has made
voice over IP an attractive and profitable idea. Vonage (http://www.vonage.com/) and other service
providers entice consumers by charging a flat, monthly rate for unlimited long distance in the U.S.
and Canada; the rate is often less than it would cost for a regular phone line without any long
distance charges. An entity with an enormous call volume, such as a worldwide retail corporation,
could benefit from tremendous cost savings by transitioning all of its telephony networks to VoIP. ...

H.323 utilizes unicast and multicast on UDP port 1718 to locate the gateway; then remote access
service (RAS) is started on UDP port 1719. H.225 and H.245 are also used for call signaling over
TCP port 1720 and data transmission over TCP ports 1000 through 65535 (Mullins, 2005).
Security Concerns
As with any new technology of the Information Age which has had groundbreaking implications for
the way we communicate electronically, IT managers have been wise to greet voice over IP with
some skepticism. After all, VoIP is a service that utilizes the Internet to transmit data, much like web
browsers, email, or any other networked application. In that case, security should definitely be a
major concern for anyone who is considering the adoption of VoIP telephone service. As
Korzeniowski (2005) writes, VoIP features all of the security problems inherent with IP
communications and adds a few new items to the mix.
The Internet
The benefits that voice over IP offer must be acknowledged with these security concerns in mind.
Unfortunately for simplicity's sake, VoIP is not just a replacement for traditional phone systems
operating on the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Indeed, we often take for granted the
security we enjoy on the PSTN, which is by nature more secluded than Internet transmissions. A
dedicated circuit handles only the

Voip Research Paper

  • 1. Voip Research Paper With so much technology and applications being developed these days, there is one technology that seems to be touching people's lives since it was introduced. What technology is that? It is Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP for short. When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876, he had no idea that his invention would morph into what it has become today. This paper is describing how VoIP was created, its industry trends, technological developments, and how VoIP is utilized. (Background A)VoIP is the transmission of voice communications and multimedia sessions over the internet instead of the public switch telephone network or PTSN (1704.02440). In 1989, an Israeli– born entrepreneur named Alon Cohen, is credited with the beginnings ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... VoIP is vulnerable to attacks just like any other network protocol. Attacks against availability, attacks against confendentiality, attacks against integrity, and attacks against social contest. Attacks against avalabilty include such things as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, Call Flooding, Malformed Messages, Spoofed Messages, Call Hijacking, and QoS Abuse (1312.2225). A DoS attack is just like it sounds, when an attacker is trying to deny a service or resource by flooding the resource with bogus request to overwhelm the resource or service. Graduation Speech: Voip Bridge Agreement Good morning, Now that the dust has settled from transition weekend (though it hasn't completely settled yet), I'd like to take a moment to welcome everyone to the new ITIP Bridge contract. We have been blessed to have a couple more years working for the TSA. Along with the Bridge, there have obviously been a myriad of other changes happening at the same time and it is a testament to the hard work and commitment displayed by each of you that we were able to come through all of this with only the smallest of hiccups. Since I have your attention for a moment, I would like to go over a couple brief topics and set a few expectations for all of us going forward Vigilance I wanted this to be the first topic because I believe it's the most important. VoIP technology has the ability to completely change the telephone industry as we know it. Big changes are in store for the way we use telephones and this section will address some of the changes to expect. Obstacles still stand in the way of progression and there are problems that need to be addressed before this technology can take over. Individuals have some great things to look forward to. The phone will connect to the Wi–Fi network in the building and all calls will be forwarded to the IP address of that phone. One of the largest obstacles VoIP needs to overcome is the issue of security. Just taking a look into the email of any person can show why this is the case. Spam is rampant in email and VoIP phones would be subject to the same spam problems. Scripts could be written to call numbers and speak or play the ad on the user's cell phone. This could wreak havoc without proper laws and measures implemented to prevent this. There is also the issue of hackers gaining access to calls over the Internet. • 11. Voice Over Internet Protocol Term Paper Introduction Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) is a technology that offers voice communications using the existing Internet protocols. Over the years the Internet has developed as a very cheap medium that has been used to send electronic mails and files across the globe. VoIP extends this concept and provides the facility to send voice data between people using the IP framework. Since the Internet is a cheap medium, enabling voice services through it will effectively cut costs that are normally encountered in making calls through normal telephone lines. This would mean that people across the world can talk to each other at a fraction of the cost that they could be spending when they use normal telephone lines. This is exactly what makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How VoIP functions At the basic level, VoIP functions much like the common Internet services that are available today. Voice data is received at one end of the IP network and is compressed, digitized, and broken down into data packets with unique serial numbers. A universal lookup table or an IP reference table helps the server at the call originating end to find out the IP of the receiver to whom the call is placed. Once the IP is resolved, data is sent to the destination IP much in the same fashion that emails and web data is transferred across the network. The data packets that are received at the destination end is collected, arranged according to sequence numbers, and converted back to analog signals so that the receiver can hear the voice. VoIP is possible between two computers, between two telephones that are connected to a network or even between a computer and a telephone. This means that a person with a PC can originate a call to a landline or vice versa [Jain, 2004] The advantages of VoIP • Voice and Data Integration VoIP is a definite step towards integration of voice and data; a need that has been increasingly researched since the last few decades. Integration of voice and data would mean that data transfer can be controlled effectively thereby making data manipulation faster and more secure. Networking protocols, such as IP, are wrapped around the VoIP packets when they are transmitted through the proper servers to the end user. Most businesses know that VoIP runs over a network and that a VoIP system needs to be designed such that voice traffic runs as smoothly over it as it does over the traditional phone system. What many businesses do not realize are the network requirements for VoIP to operate correctly. The quality of a phone call can be impacted by issues such as having the right type of cabling (cat 5e or 6 is recommended), and ensuring that switches, not hubs, are deployed within a customer's network, and that all routing and switching CPE support QoS (CIO). Additional details can include whether a company has a firewall, and whether the ports that permit the two most common VoIP protocols SIP and MGCP ports are blocked. In addition, reviewing internal network needs, a review of the network connectivity will be used to deliver VoIP should occur. Over three weeks they tested the system and gathered information to help improve the system if need by. The overall goal of the pilot program was to 'gain buy–in from the user community'. Obviously when establishing a new program, there is bound to be some problems and bugs. For instance, Butler encountered a software bug that caused immense stress to the staff and the system developers. Some of the issues caused by the software bug were random server reboots, lost phone numbers, voicemail malfunctions, and a problem with all of the multiline phones. Do you think Butler made the right decision to utilize this new technology? What implications does this decision hold for Butler's IT department in the long run? Yes I believe that Butler made the right decision to utilize this new technology. The system that they were using before was outdated and was not performing to the standards that Butler needed. • 24. Article Review of 'VoIP Definition and Solution' VoIP Technology This essay evaluates an analysis presented in an article discussing voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology. The article, "VoIP Definition and Solutions," written by PCWorld and CIO author and editor Thomas Wailgum, describes how VoIP works, its capabilities and its applications. The article examined the treatment of VoIP topics including its definition, objectives, systems and solutions. The term voice over IP refers to a technology that carries voice calls over an IP network by digitizing and packetizing voice streams. Closely related to IP telephony and Internet telephony, VoIP technology allows analog communications to be routed over data networks that include wide area networks (WANs), local area networks (LANs), and the Internet. Combining voice and data on one network can offer the Army potential telecommunications savings and efficiencies, but there are challenges that come with maintaining network capability, reliability, flexibility and security. Callers connect to VoIP technology in three ways. One method uses a regular telephone, along with a fast Internet connection, and for the individual soldier placing a call, an analog telephone adapter or ATA. The ATA converts analog voice signals into digital packets of data to be sent over the Internet. This application of VoIP technology is easy to set up and use, and is frequently used by VoIP consumers. The Army, which has many users on traditional telephones, would need to use a specialized ... Additionally, VoIP services include features such as name and number caller ID, call forwarding, call blocking, and voice mail as standard features. Whereas, traditional phone companies typically charge premiums for these features. Voip Essay A Performance Analysis OF VoIP Traffic Over Wireless Lan And Wan Using Different Codecs Tasnim Abdalla Abbas Mohamed * Dr.Amin Babiker A/ Nabi Mustafa Department Of Communication Engineering .Al–Neelain University ABSTRACT A simulation model is presented to analyze and evaluate the performance of VoIP based integrated wireless LAN/WAN with taking into account various voice encoding schemes. The network model was simulated using OPNET Modeler software. Different parameters that indicate the QoS like MOS, jitter, end to end delay, traffic send and traffic received are calculated and analyzed in Wireless LAN/WAN scenarios. Depending on this evaluation, Selection codecs G.729A consider the best choice for VoIP. KEYWORDS VoIP, Codecs, QoS INTRODUCTION During the recent years, there is a growing trend in real–time voice communication using Internet protocol (IP). Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology that allows delivery of voice communications over the Internet or other packet switched networks rather than the traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Many VoIP applications are available on the internet: Skype, Viber, Tango, and Yahoo messenger. All of these applications provide good quality and free calls. In VoIP, the analog voice signal from the transmitter is converted into the digital format before compression and encoding it into a stream of IP packets for transmission to the receiver over IP network. • 43. Essay about Voice over Internet Protocol Voice over Internet Protocol Definition of VoIP Mr. Watson, come here, I want you! These were the first words that were spoken over the phone back on March 10 1876. If you combine this invention with the same invention of the first computer that was completed nearly 70 years later in 1946, you would then be able to access VoIP. VoIP is also known as voice over internet protocol. VoIP is in essence the ability to talk with ones voice via computer to computer. In the next few pages you will learn about the history of VoIP, how it works, the requirements that are needed to use VoIP, the benefits and risks of this type of technology, and lastly you will get a glimpse at the future of VoIP. Not many people know what VoIP is or even that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With the introduction of Ethernet services the quality was able to get better. There was better clarity but there were still some bugs due to static and difficulty making connections. In the beginning VoIP traffic represented rather less than 1% of voice traffic. In 1998 three IP switch manufacturers introduced equipment capable of switching (intertangent, 2005). With these implementations by the year 2000 the voice traffic had risen only two more percent to 3%. This is not a huge leap but there are many advances that are still being made and the numbers will continue to grow. The real breakthrough occurred when such systems like Cisco Systems and Nortel started producing VoIP equipment that was capable of switching (Viopreview, 2005). With the introduction of switching it was no longer the CPU's responsibility to switch the voice packets. With the introduction of the new switching this made it to where the computer did not require specific hardware to be able to use VoIP. When the switches were introduced this made the hardware cheaper and allowed larger companies to be able to implement their calls via the internet. VoIP has not really caught on with the general public, but has been primarily used by large corporations. The general public does not really search out things such as this because they sometimes become complacent in their day to day life. On the other hand, large companies will ... The campus consists of three different buildings, each with twenty to fifty workstations. The project must be completed in 90 calendar days starting on November 1. Budget The IT department has been given a budget of $25,000 to complete the project. The budget includes the equipment, the installation, all software and licensure used to operate and maintain the VoIP throughout all three (3) buildings. An estimate is required if outsourcing to a local installation company is decided upon. The estimate must be approved by the President or CEO of the company before any work is performed or started. Human Resources The human resources put in place would include the President or CEO of the company, the CIO (Chief Information Officer), the CFO (Chief Financial Officer); the IT manager, the IT Administrator, and the Network Engineer. It is up to these guys to figure out the best way and the best route to take in order to get the signals for VoIP across all three (3) buildings while staying within the budget. Since the buildings are pretty close together, maybe looking at Point–to–Point would be ideal for this small company. Point–to– Point may also be the cheapest way to go with such a small company of 20 to 50 workstations per building. It may be even better to outsource the work through a local installation company that the company approves of. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Internet Protocol ( Voip ) Information Technology Management Task 1 VOIPs Project Western Governors University EXPLANATION Our proposed voice over internet protocol (VOIP) phone system is powered by Cisco. It is consist of several hardware and software devices. The most basic piece of hardware to be used is the Cisco PBX. This device cost $6000. It supports a surplus of over 1000 extensions. The company has got an approximate 120 users of the old IP telephony system. In this regard three Cisco catalyst switch (POE) 48 ports will be needed. Such a switch cost $893.93 each. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The initial cost for phone, system equipment, networking equipment and IP handsets is approximately $30,000. This is a direct purchase and will be incurred as a one–time cost. Similarly, the licenses provided by Cisco are one–time costs and provide voicemail services, unified messaging services, SIP trunk access and endpoint access for physical telephone handsets as well as soft phone clients. The cost to purchase these licenses comes to approximately $18,000 and will be incurred later in the phase of development. (voiplink, 2015) Additionally, during the first phase of the project there will be costs associated with consulting, installation and training. These costs are a bit more flexible than the hardware and licensing costs, because the amount of training provided to end–users is up to the company to decide. A reasonable estimate for initial training is $12,000 with a 10% recurring cost each year. Consulting and installation fees are being calculated at $10,000 with a 10% recurring annual cost for additional consulting. The largest recurring cost will be for SIP trunk services, to provide telephone access for calls outside the organization. The annual cost for 120 SIP trunks is approximately $35,000 but future analysis may dictate a reduction in the number of trunks required. Since this potential reduction in SIP services cannot be accurately calculated at this time, the recurring annual cost is being estimated for the full amount of $35,000. This ... These lines use point of access control, mac address verification, software security programs, software and hardware firewalls, and are actively monitored. For example, if someone were to plug an unauthorized device into a port using one of these lines, within a minute or less they would be locked out of the system with their location being sent to the personnel who monitor the line. Does this mean the line is completely secure? Of course not, every system is vulnerable in some way, even systems that do not touch the network face physical security issues. In the given ... On the CAC cards the users would have a unique set of certificates matched to the organizations VoIP security software allowing them access, however, the CAC cards alone would not be sufficient for identification. The users would be required to input a strong password that they set to their CAC card at the point of issue. This password would be an additional method of identification that was known only to the original recipient of the card. I would also request that active monitoring of the VoIP network be assigned to a member of the IT team to ensure no unauthorized devices were linked to the network. Additionally, this IT member would be required to run intrusion and antimalware detection software on the system and ensure that it is maintained at the highest state of readiness. This involves running checks of the system constantly to ensure no unauthorized devices have been linked into the system, verification of the integrity of the VoIP tunnel and monitoring the system to verify connectivity, and software integrity. • 51. Voice Of Voice Over Internet Protocol Abstract When Voice over Internet Protocol was being introduced, it was perfectly engineered to work using the existing model and infrastructure without bearing huge cost. VoIP uses Internet Protocol to connect, transmit and terminate the calls. Most of the industry is using VoIP services to connect their offices locally, in different cities and in different countries. VoIP enables User/client to place a telephonic call to their offices/friends/families. This paper will focus on how VoIP works and what are the security concerns. Also the industry's concern about Quality of Service (QoS) and will discuss about threats in general. Introduction IP is used for data communication and for Voice Dialogue exchanged between two parties, is also carried on the same data network. Data network could be a private network (Local offices within a city or many cities in the same country/region and also using IPLC's to connect other countries/continents) or on Internet by creating Hard/soft VPN tunneling in between the offices. In general discuss it is considered on the Internet only but it being used by creating point to point connect using Wireless or only data connectivity between two office. Using Internet to transmit VoIP traffic is very inexpensive as compared to Local data connectivity or using your IPLC. Phone calls are placed using VoIP over any kind of data connectivity. The simplest way of VoIP communication is, when both the parties can receive and make calls using internet. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Information Resources group from Butler received approval to start a 3–year plan on the upgrade or convergence of the telecommunications systems and networks. This could result in an upgrade of the Centrex system or the use of an in house VOIP PBX system. If they were to use the PBX system, the university would have control of its features and customization. The main thing was that VOIP was sure to solve the problems they were already dealing with. On the contrary, VOIP was new and it had its drawbacks as well. They feared possible risks of security, example viruses. In addition, proving it useful to new users given it was still subsequently new technology. Here are some advantages of having a VOIP system in place in a business. One that is most advantageous is that it runs of the internet. Most businesses, if not all uses the internet, so the use of communication is available. Secondly, would the cost savings of using VOIP over the use of a traditional analog system. However, the savings would depend on what services a business uses. Thus, a business should do a cost analysis report so they can get the savings and services they need to make their company more sufficient (Tan, 2011). VoIP service providers need access to the PSTN to terminate calls to recipients not subscribed to the VoIP provider's service. They have to pay PSTN operators for call switching and routing to terminate the calls. The telephony provider has to interconnect its network with other networks in order to deliver numerous customers at home and offices as well as provide valuable network for businesses. Understanding Interconnection The current scenario of VoIP requires conversion of IP voice signals to TDM format to be used over traditional PSTN network. Thus, an interconnection between PSTN and IP is required. However, understanding of interconnection within PSTN and IP networks will provide a fair idea about the requirements for interconnection in each network. Within PSTN network, the service layer and transport layer functions are not separate as in case of only IP networks. The physical interconnection for PSTN is decided by the nature of service to be provided and thus these two functions are interdependent while in IP, the transport and service functions form a part of separate layers in TCP/IP model. This difference in the basic core structure has to be considered to interconnect these two different kinds of networks. Figure 1 Interconnection between PSTN and IP based network. Are there real benefits to a smaller company making a switch like this? For anyone starting a business, making sure you have a dependable phone connection can make or break your company. Network computers see the completion of much work, but most offices can't do away with phones for the need of daily communication with customers. Here's some other reasons a small to medium business might benefit from transitioning to VoIP. Easy to Install, Maintain and Expand VoIP phones require little technical knowledge when it comes to installation. Instead of having someone run phone wiring through a facility, you can set up the VoIP phone, which installs fast and requires little maintenance. In addition, as your company grows, the cost to add new users is minimal, and it doesn't take to scale your business up as it grows. INTRODUCTION A significant amount of research efforts have been directed towards attempts at providing high quality service for real time applications of IP based networks in the past decade. The core idea of these techniques is to control the IP network congestion level which is the main cause of delays/losses, and also imposes upper bounds on these events. Traffic policing is one of the techniques used for this purpose. These techniques makes the assumption that users generating flows/calls will specify the setup time by using Service Level Agreement (SLAs) i.e. the characteristics of the traffic that they emit to the network. Therefore, these techniques are employed to ensure that the generated traffic is within the conforms of previously agreed contracts. One of the most popular traditional traffic policing techniques is the Leaky Bucket (LB). Average rate and the maximum burst size/length of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Future of Telecommunications | WORK CASE 15 | Case Study 15 | Bus5480 Strategic Management Professor: Dr. Uchenna Nwabueze | Skype versus ATamp;T and the Future of Telecommunications | 4/8/2012 | Prepared by: James Whetsel | Executive Summary This report was written to analyze the competition among the Voice–over Internet Protocol (VoIP) industry segment, especially as it relates to the relationship between Skype and ATamp;T and the competition between the VoIP market and the land line market. In analyzing this segment we found that VoIP is a growing industry in what has historically been predominately a land line telecommunication company such as ATamp;T. The industry segment is faced with a rivalry type competitive market that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With a roughly 5 percent market share by the end of 2010, VoIP was still a small competitor in the industry. A major opportunity for VoIP providers was to capitalize on the cellular market. Experts predicted that, by 2019, half of all mobile calls would be over IP networks. The IP connections would be available through VoIP applications that ran through a cellular device. Mobile VoIP applications are expected to reach 278 million users, generating a $32.2 billion profit. What does the five forces analysis reveal about the chances for profitability in the VoIP industry?3 1. Current sellers competing in the market * It's been good times to be a VoIP user, and bad ones to be Skype. * To a great extent, up until now Skype has had a lock on the consumer P2P VoIP market, and even though it's recent move into business VoIP hasn't been universally well–received, things looked rosy for the company in that market as well. * But a trio of competitors makes the future less rosy for Skype. Yahoo, the well–financed startup Jajah, and the big Web site Lycos have all released no–cost or low–cost VoIP P2P solutions recently, attempting to muscle in on Skype. 2. Threat of new competitors' market entry * Possibly the most intriguing of the group is the European–based Jajah. The service requires no client to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

VoIP: A New Frontier for Security and Vulnerabilities Essay VoIP: A New Frontier for Security and Vulnerabilities Introduction to Voice over IP Technology The promise of extremely cheap telephone service, utilizing the Internet to transmit voice, has made voice over IP an attractive and profitable idea. Vonage (http://www.vonage.com/) and other service providers entice consumers by charging a flat, monthly rate for unlimited long distance in the U.S. and Canada; the rate is often less than it would cost for a regular phone line without any long distance charges. An entity with an enormous call volume, such as a worldwide retail corporation, could benefit from tremendous cost savings by transitioning all of its telephony networks to VoIP. ... H.225 and H.245 are also used for call signaling over TCP port 1720 and data transmission over TCP ports 1000 through 65535 (Mullins, 2005). Security Concerns As with any new technology of the Information Age which has had groundbreaking implications for the way we communicate electronically, IT managers have been wise to greet voice over IP with some skepticism. After all, VoIP is a service that utilizes the Internet to transmit data, much like web browsers, email, or any other networked application. In that case, security should definitely be a major concern for anyone who is considering the adoption of VoIP telephone service. As Korzeniowski (2005) writes, VoIP features all of the security problems inherent with IP communications and adds a few new items to the mix. The Internet The benefits that voice over IP offer must be acknowledged with these security concerns in mind. Unfortunately for simplicity's sake, VoIP is not just a replacement for traditional phone systems operating on the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). Indeed, we often take for granted the security we enjoy on the PSTN, which is by nature more secluded than Internet transmissions. A dedicated circuit handles only the ...
