2. Avocado is a highly nutritious and versatile fruit that has gained popularity
in recent years due to its numerous health benefits and culinary uses.
Although avocado is primarily grown in tropical and subtropical regions of
the world, its cultivation is still in its infancy in India.
Increasing demand for avocados in the Indian market, there is a growing
interest in exploring the potential of avocado cultivation in different regions
of the country.
Study on the potential avocado growing regions in India, using an ecological
niche modelling approach to identify regions in India where avocado
cultivation is likely to be successful.
Aim to provide valuable insights to farmers, researchers, and stakeholders
who are interested. Study results will help to identify suitable regions for
avocado cultivation, thereby contributing to the development of the avocado
industry in India.
Why Avocados and this Study?
3. 1. Hass: The Hass avocado is the most commonly grown variety and is known for its rich, creamy texture and nutty flavour.
It has a dark, pebbled skin that turns black as it ripens.
2. Fuerte: The Fuerte avocado has a smooth, glossy skin that remains green when ripe. It has a buttery texture and a slightly
nutty flavour.
3. Reed: The Reed avocado is known for its large size and creamy texture. It has a green, pebbled skin that turns black when
ripe.
4. Lamb Hass: The Lamb Hass is a cross between the Hass and Gwen varieties. It has a similar texture and flavour to the
Hass but with a slightly smaller seed.
5. Pinkerton: The Pinkerton avocado has a smooth, glossy skin and a pale green flesh. It has a slightly nutty flavour and a
firm texture.
6. Gwen: The Gwen avocado has a green, pebbled skin and a creamy texture. It has a mild, nutty flavour and a small seed.
7. Zutano: It has a smooth, green skin and a mild, buttery flavour. It has a slightly firmer texture than other varieties.
8. Bacon: The Bacon avocado has a smooth, green skin and a mild, buttery flavor. It has a high oil content, making it ideal
for use in guacamole and other dips.
