Indian Scenario
Almonds are an integral part of India’s cultural
and culinary heritage, and are considered a prized
“brain food” for children. They are also a key
ingredient in traditional Indian sweets known as
Mithai, as well as popular for gifting during the
Diwali festive season.
INDIAN SCENARIO
 The annual rate of increase in India's domestic
consumption of almonds is reported to be around
  20%.
 > 95% of almonds consumed by Indians is
  imported
 80% of imports being sourced from California &
  rest from Australia
 Production 1200tons only

 Non-descript variety-Bitter Almond

 India imports almonds with shells and processes
it domestically to obtain shelled almonds
 Most of the manual shelling of almonds in India
is undertaken at Bombay and New Delhi, from
where the shelled almonds are transported to
  other consumption centers
 The Indian festival season extending from
September to December is the peak consumption
period for almonds, with maximum demand
  witnessed in November
 In the 2011-12 financial year India imported
  74,600 tonnes of almonds
WHY CALIFORNIA
 India now imports over $100 million worth of
almond, especially from California, making it the
    number-one US export to India
 United States of America is the single largest
producer, consumer and exporter of Sweet
almonds, with the country contributing to over 80% of
    the global almond production
 The world's largest almond handler is the Blue
Diamond Growers Cooperative, which is located in
    Sacramento, California
 Blue Diamond is owned by over two-thirds of
California growers and markets two-third of
    California's crop
 India is the fastest growing market for California
almonds because of their high protein value in a
    meatless society.

PROTECTION AGAINST FOREX

     Export Contract Will suffer from
    with the Buyer was Losses
       made in USD

                           If, unfavourable
                           FOREX rates, at
                         the time of payment

Forward Contract with IDBI Bank to fix FOREX rate
When IDBI gets payment from Buyer, it will pay us when shipment is sent on this
fixed conversion rate
APPROXIMATION OF FORWARD FOREX
 Assumptions
 Current Exchange Rate = 55 INR per USD
      Maturity Date = 90 days
      INR Interest rate = 8% p.a = 2% for 90 days
      USD Interest rate= 16% p.a = 4% for 90 days
 Suppose I deposit 1 USD in US bank and 55 INR in Indian Bank for
    90 days
Timline Value of USD Value of INR
        Current 1 55
        In 90 days 1*(1+0.04) = 1.04 55*(1+0.02) = 56.10
 They both should be equal for 90 days. So 1USD will equal 53.94
INR. This can be a good approximation of forward exchange rate
