- Leadership can be learned or taught….
Leaders are the ones who take responsibility for making decisions and bringing change. Leaders are the ones who empower people to discover and use their greatest potential. People choose leaders based on behavior
Set an example. Each leader wants to get the best out of their team. Excellence orientation is great, as there is always need for development. Instead of telling your team members what to do, show it to them by their own example. Practice what you preach, and the results will astonish you.
1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV) ‘Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.’
The greatest leaders in history (Mandela, Martin Luther King) had one thing in common. They all made an impact. If you want to be an authentic leader, you should have your unique contribution to the welfare of society. Without a vision, your activities are meaningless. The key is devoting your efforts and time to the realization of your vision. Vision is what inspires people to take action and go forward. As a prefect/headgirl, what’s your vision? What do you want to be remembered for?
Much talking and less acting has nothing to do with effectiveness. What people see affects them many times greater than what they hear. Choose actions rather than speeches, just do it.
Flexibility is a truly effective trait if it doesn’t affect your values. Each and every decision of yours, no matter the situation, must be based on your value system. As long as your actions are value-driven, you will have the trust and respect of people around you.
Leading means communicating, influencing, engaging. Communication skills are the foundation of effective leadership. Constantly improve your relationships with people because unity is strength and there is always room for growth. You cannot be a leader without followers.
Mistakes are proof that you are doing something. You won’t become a worse leader if you admit your mistakes. By doing that, you will show that you are wise enough to learn from each and every experience.
There are numerous leadership skills that could manifest at different times or in different circumstances, depending on the situation, and that one can develop as a leader. These may include: Patience, Empathy, Active listening, Reliability, Dependability, Creativity, Positivity, Effective feedback, Timely communication, Team building, Flexibility, Risk-taking, Ability to teach and mentor
Increase Self-awareness in 4 ways that are most critical for leaders: Wisdom: These are insights from your experience that you can apply to the challenges you face, Identity: This is who you are in your current professional and personal context, Reputation: This is how others perceive you as a leader based on your current and previous behavior, and Brand: This is what you aspire to and the actions you take to support that mission.
“Communicating information and ideas” is consistently rated among the most important skills for leaders to be successful.
Developing your influencing and leadership skills helps you to communicate your vision or goals, align the efforts of others, and build commitment from people at all levels. Influencing tactics fall into 3 categories: logical, emotional, or cooperative appeals. We call these influencing people using the head, heart, or hands.
You need the ability to constantly be in a learning mode, to value and seek out the lessons of experience. To develop as leaders and as people, we need to be active learners. This involves recognizing when new behaviors, leadership skills, or attitudes are needed and accepting responsibility for developing them.
Jesus was a great example of servant leadership in John 13:1-17 (NKJV)
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
