This lesson plan aims to teach students about fake news through role playing activities. It begins with a warm up discussing real and fake news articles. Students are then split into groups and assigned roles as news readers, journalists, or clients to participate in related activities. As readers, they analyze real and fake news articles to identify fake content. As journalists, they write news articles within assigned topics and viewpoints. As clients, they discuss scenarios where one may want to influence public opinion through manipulated news. Main point to understand: it is not the best idea to believe everything you see/
it can be real only to some extent.
Time frame: 5-7 minutes
As you have understood the topic of our class is fake news. Today you will play three roles.
You will be a reader of news, a journalist who writes news and a customer who orders news
(nowadays it is more than real). We will guide you throughout the lesson. You receive
stickers for the first part - nothing should really changes just be who you are now. Please
stick it to your T-shirt or sweater.

2. Reader part
Main point: How to spot fake news.
1. Separate readers into two teams.
2. Give 2 different articles related to the same topic (fake and original one, one type for
each team).
3. Ask learners to look through the article and find out:
- Which of the article is fake and real?
- Come up with at least 3 reasons why you think the article is fake or real.
Listen to their answers about three reasons and provide them with real reasons. (on a slide)

Time frame: 15 minutes
Ok! Let’s work harder now. You should be journalists, behave as journalists, that’s why we
will mark you with journalist’s sign. Please stick those stickers where you want for everyone
who can see them.

3. Journalist part
Main point: there is completely different news from one source if journalist is interested in
keeping one point of view. (With Google.com document)
1. 3 groups (5 people in each).
2. One topic for a group - one group one small text:
● only good news;
● only bad news;
● free style (whatever they want, no censorship).
3. Articles will be displayed with the projector in real time.
4. After groups will make own articles - small discussion.

Main point: sometimes there are battles of journalists who are producing fake news. It is
really hard to find true news on that battlefield.

1. Learners should download Fake News app and read the rules. For some learners if would be
still QR-code link for downloading the app.
2. Learners have the opportunity to play in groups up to 3 persons with one smartphone.
Time frame: 3-5 minutes
Some fake news pops up due to the journalist’s mistakes and it causes reader’s misunderstanding of
the real situation. However, sometimes fake news is ordered by people who may be interested in
changing truth. Now we will give you an opportunity to play roles of people who want to influence the
crowds. So as usual take new stickers and stick them to your T-shirts or sweater.

4. Client part
Main point: when we know why news could be messed up it is easier to filter “trash” content
from the true content.
1. Split the group into two teams.
2. Give to each team carts with different scenarios:
a) You are a famous politician, but your polls and people’s
respect are falling down from day to day and elections are coming.
You are afraid to lose. With the help of your pressure on mass
media you decided to change the situation. What kind of news
would you issue?
b) You are a rich businessman, but your shares in a company
are decreasing in price. The cause is the popularity of your
opponent. You decided to destroy your opponent with the help of
social media. What kind of information would you post?
3. Time for inner groups discussions (5 minutes).
4. Time for overall discussion (10 minutes).
