I’ll wrap up with a pause on our full portfolio, and borrow an analogy from the recording industry to do so. We’ve completely remastered our hits, and reenvisioned them for the next decade rather than the last. Community: from a view of community that was about school portal, and is now about social learningContent: from file mgmt to sharable learning objects and tools for curationOutcomes: we moved a substantial element – enterprise survey and made it free in CD. Greatly improved capabilities of student evidence management required in the 10 yraccred cycle. We’ve added tracks that we needed for mobile, collaboration, and analytics. And as you’ve seen, we’re deepening and improving the integrations between them and investing heavily in improving their experience.Motion to iPhoneValue: Now with so much additional innovation and value, we hope that more of you will want to “complete your album”. But we know that requires more than just improved products – it requires compelling economics. Those are questions to be pursued individually, but I’ll set your expectations that we’re bringing the same new thinking and creativity to that part of our relationship as we have to our product portfolio. As always, see your account managers for details. Finally: We’re really trying to creating a concept album—a more coherent product ladder for your future, technically well integrated products that are easier to support, and ultimately a whole who’s value is more than simply the sum of the pieces. Thank you for listening. I’m now pleased to introduce Katie Blot, President of Bb Services, who will assist me in developing the themes of innovation and value today. THIS IS YOUR LAST SLIDE
To start with Learn, here are a number of new innovations we’d like to show you.I’m just giving you a teaser, Deborah Everhart is going to show you the full picture tomorrow morning during the Blackboard Learn Roadmap session.SHOW: Calendar, Inline Assignment Grading, Social Learning Tools, Discussion Boards, Item Analysis, Enterprise surveys
One of the trends we’ve seen in recent years is the prevalence of very large courses and something asked for by you in Australia as well. I’m thinking of courses with 5- 6- or 700 students enrolled, or more. This is now in development.
The Inline Assignment Grading feature, which we introduced a few months back, greatly improves the ease of grading submitted documents. It has gotten great reviews from Instructors, but one of the things you told us really quickly was that there wasn’t enough screen real estate to effectively view and annotate the documents inline . . .
Now, to this point of helping faculty identify students with at-risk behavior, we’ve recently shipped the Retention Center. It’s a grass-roots compliment to institutional focus on retention. It continuously reviews student behavior and provides a prioritized list about which students appear to be most at-risk of performing well. In this example 48 students are at risk, and a breakdown of where that risk is to help guide our actions. We’re taking this tool a step further, moving beyond a watch list to a more comprehensive tool. It will allow you to investigate behaviors throughout your course – and apply common remedies to patterns of student behavior – and thus realizing further efficiencies in faculty time.
Our current anonymous grading tool allows the grader to switch back and forth between anonymous and identified modes. We’re updating this feature by offering an option that forces anonymous grading for all attempts and prevents the grader from switching back and forth between anonymous and identified mode.Join the Blackboard Learn Roadmap session tomorrow where Deborah Everhart will show you all the great new innovations that are now available in Blackboard Learn and those that are in development.Along with that we’re adding support for multiple graders for any given item. The new “multiple graders” tool will allow TA’s to review, comment and potentially score student submissions with an option of having their scores go directly to the grade center or to be forwarded to the instructor for final review and grade assignment.
Earlier I noted how the importance of student interaction Earlier I noted how the importance of student interaction drove us to prompt faculty awareness of this element in their course designs.I’m pleased to introduce a new menu option for interaction within Learn – Bb Meeting Room. Meeting Room represents a first step in adding live collaboration to online learning. Now any course can add a virtual room for live interaction with an interactive whiteboard to display content and group chat where basic collaboration can take place. And of course this feature is both experientially visually and technically aligned with our fully featured synchronous experience, Bb Collaborate web conferencing.
Collaborate is our flagship product for live collaboration, and it’s enjoying rapid adoption at all levels as demand for live interaction rises. Beyond the whiteboard and chat of meeting room it adds the power of voice conferencing, application sharing, session recording and, and support for use on mobile devices. But you critiqued our integration. You told us is wasn’t as straightforward as it could be, and so harder to realize it’s full value on your campuses. Our product has studied this problem carefully, and we’re delivering a series of improvements: -Every course now has a dedicated “course room” that lasts as long as the course lasts, so that it’s always just a click away. -Every instructor now has a dedicated “personal room” for office hours, and to make instant ad-hoc collaboration is easy to do. Sidebar AppearsThere’s one other important value that we provide with this product – built in voice conferencing, at a quality and reliability that allows you to forego other investments in teleconferencing services. We’re auto-generating conference codes and user pins when you schedule sessions to help you realize this high added value on your campus.
Last year we introduced Blackboard Analytics for Blackboard Learn. For the first time students can instantly see how their activity compares to peers. And educators can benchmark student performance in their course to other sections offered at the same time, or in prior years. This product produces deeper insights into user progress – or lack thereof – more quickly and efficiently than could possibly be done without it. The measurements of student success can be tracked to make data-driven decisions.LMS Requirement: Bb Learn 9.1 SP4 and higher
But some of the big problems in education extend beyond even the institution ……One such problem is learning content, and where we’ll source all that’s needed in a future that’s more demanding of content. It must be: Highly engaging for today’s learners, Accessible for the disabled, Developed to deliver comparative analytics from usage data Because this is so hard to do, it’s more likely that educators will collaborate on the task. And because it’s more valuable when done well, there will be new demands on sharing. CLICK to INSET CURATION: Xplor is our attempt to support these new requirements. It’s required new thinking – like sharing more than just the content, but also the tools to curate it.ClICK to INSET CC: and we must share responsibly. We’ve integrated the open industry standard Creative Commons directly into our workflow, with controls that allow our clients to independently tune copyright policy to for their needs.
