3. Four steps
Five Cs

4. Carefully read the title, abstract, and
introduction.

5. Read the section and sub-section
headings, but ignore everything else.

6. Read the conclusions.

7. Glance over the references, mentally
ticking off the ones you’ve already read.

8.  Five Cs
• Category
• Context
• Correctness
• Contributions
• Clarity

9. Look carefully at the figures, diagrams and
other illustrations in the paper.

10. Remember to mark relevant unread
references for further reading.

11. If you can’t understand the paper at
second pass.
• Set the paper aside.
• Return to the paper later, perhaps after reading
background material.
• Persevere and go on to the third pass.

12. You should be able to reconstruct the
entire structure of the paper from memory.

13. Attempt to virtually re-implement the paper.
• Identify and challenge every assumption.
• What do you think about the idea of the
presentation.

14. Use an academic search engine to find
three to five recent papers in the area.

15. Find shared citations and repeated author
names in the bibliography.

16. Go to the website for these top
conferences and look through their recent
proceedings.
