This document discusses personal protective equipment (PPE) including the hierarchy of controls and employer/employee responsibilities regarding PPE. It describes the types of PPE used in general industry focusing on head protection like hard hats that protect against falling objects, bumps, and electrical hazards. Eye and face protection is also discussed including safety glasses and goggles that protect against impacts, dust, splashes and other hazards. Engineering and administrative controls should be used before PPE, which is the last level of workplace hazard control.
3. Introduction
Lesson objectives:
1. Describe the hierarchy of controls as it
relates to personal protective equipment.
2. Identify types of personal protective
equipment utilized in general industry.
3. Explain the employer responsibilities
regarding personal protective equipment.
4. Explain the employee responsibilities
regarding personal protective equipment.
4. Introduction
Employers must protect employees:
โข Assess the workplace
โข Eliminate and reduce the hazards found using
engineering and administrative controls
โข Then use appropriate personal protective
equipment
โข Remember, Personal Protective Equipment is
the last level of control.
6. Hierarchy of Controls
Elimination/substitution:
โข Highest level of protection
โข Eliminate hazard from the workplace
โข Substitute
โ Use safer item/substance
โ Use same chemical but in a different form; as particle size
of a substance decreases, hazard level increases

7. Hierarchy of Controls
Engineering controls:
โข Physical changes to workplace
โข Examples
o Isolation
o Ventilation
o Equipment modification
o Others
8. Hierarchy of Controls
Administrative controls/work practice control:
โข Requires worker or employer to do something
โข Examples
o Written proper operating procedures, work permits and safe
work practices
o Inspection and maintenance
o Housekeeping
o Monitoring the use of highly hazardous materials
o Supervision
o Training
o Alarms, signs and warnings
o Regulated areas
o Limit exposure by time or distance
9. Types of PPE
Head protection:
โข Frequent causes of head injuries
โ Falling objects from above striking on the head;
โ Bump head against fixed objects, such as exposed
pipes or beams; or
โ Accidental head contact with electrical hazards.

Types of PPE
โข Classes of hard hats:
โ CLASS G (General)
โข Protect against impact, penetration
โข Low-voltage electrical protection (proof-tested to 2,200
volts)

Types of PPE
โ CLASS E (Electrical)
โข Designed for electrical/utility work
โข Protect against falling objects, impact
โข Electrical protection against high-voltage
(proof-tested to 20,000 volts)

Types of PPE
โ CLASS C (Conductive)
โข Designed for comfort; offers limited protection
โข Protects heads that may bump against fixed objects
โข Does not protect against falling objects or electrical
hazards
14. Types of PPE
โข ANSI Z89.1, 1997
โ Type I: provides protection from objects fall
directly on top of the helmet, but not from
objects that strike the side, front, or back of the
head.
โ Type II: provides protection from strikes to
the top of the head and also provides protection
from blows to the sides, front, and back of the
head. More suitable for workers who are not
always in a standing position

Types of PPE
โข Common causes of eye injuries
โ Chemical splashes
โ Blood or OPIM splashes or sprays
โ Intense light
โ Dust and other flying particles
โ Molten metal splashes
17. Types of PPE
โข Eye and face protection โ must comply with
โ ANSI Z87.1-2003, or
โ ANSI Z87.1-1989 (R-1998)

18. Types of PPE
โข Selecting eye and face protection โ elements
to consider:
โ Ability to protect against workplace hazards
โ Should fit properly
โ Should provide unrestricted vision and movement
โ Durable and cleanable
โ Allow unrestricted functioning of other PPE
19. Types of PPE
โข Safety glasses
โ Used to protect against moderate impacts from particles

20. Types of PPE
โข Goggles
โ Protect eyes, and the
facial area immediately surrounding
the eyes from
impact, dust, splashes.
โ Some can be used over corrective
lenses, if they fit them.
