Exodus

Definition: a mass departure; emigration
Ex. When the concert ended, the exodus of the attendees clogged up the traffic for miles.
The exodus of the Korean tourists, made the airport lobbies quite crowded.
Discriminate

Definition: to see special features of
Ex. One of the important skills for judging a dog show is the ability to discriminate between dozens of
breeds.
Simon Cowell is probably the best judge in talent shows because he can easily discriminate one talent
to the other.
Optimism

Definition: an inclination to anticipate the best possible outcome.
Ex. Even though I never feed my dog at the dinner table, she always watches me with great optimism.
I am optimistic as I wait for the book release of Rick Roridan’s “The Heroes of Olympus: Mark of
Athena” during fall of 2012.
2. Numskull

Definition: a thick or muddled head, a dull or stupid person.
Ex. “Don’t be such anumskull” my mother shouted as I slammed on the brakes. “WE can’t afford a
new car!”.
I can proudly say that I’m a numskull when it comes to love because I always fall for the wrong guy.
Cricket

Definition: a game played with a ball and a bat by two teams of eleven players.
Ex. If you visit Assiniboine Park on a Sunday in the summer, you will see , men in white outfits playing
cricket.
Ms. Hobes explained to us how to play cricket and even showed us a video but honestly, I seriously
didn’t understand its difference to baseball.
Merciless

Definition: having or showing no mercy or pity
Ex. The presidential candidate was mercilessin his criticism of his opponents.
I slowly fall down to my knees as he mercilessly beat me in the school debate.
Endearment

Definition: a word or act expressing affection
Ex. While my husband was serving Afghanistan, I kept a letter filled with endearments from him in my
wallet.
Ironic as I say that I can’t write anything that uses the word endearment ‘cause it reminds me of
the letters my friends gave me and remembering them would only break my heart.
Stratagem

Definition: a cleverly contrived trick or scheme for gaining an end
Ex. As a stratagem, to get the kids to do their chores, Mel persuaded them to have a race to see which
child could finish first.
3. As a stratagem, Count Olaf disguised himself as a long-lost relative of the Baudelaire Orphans just to get
the fortune their parents left them.
Kibosh

Definition: something that senses as a check or a stop
Ex. The economic downturn put the kibosh on their renovation plans.
Mrs. Wilson put the kibosh on her son’s plan to go out at midnight with his friends.
Suicide has always been an option, I thought about it loads of times, but everything went to a kibosh
when I met you.
Rebel
Definition:
(noun)- a person who go against the law
(adjective)- to go against what is asked or to do something illegal
Ex. “Hell child! They said you were a rebel, a traitor.”
AJ and his friends started a rebellion whose goal is to go against the banning of field trips.
Equality

Definition: the quality or state of being equal (same rank or status)
Ex. It’s absurd to suggest that there was equality between all citizens in the US in the early 1060’s.
Equality between all citizens is a step towards the nation’s peace.
Kudos
/KOO-dahss/ (noun)
Definition: fame and renowned resulting from an act or achievement
: praise given for achievement
Ex.Kudosis given to the Garden City Gophers for beating the Kelvin Clippers, in the HS Boys Varsity Wes
men championship game.
Francis was given a lot of kudos from the teachers for being the Top 1 in the whole grade.
4. Headlong

Definition: without deliberation; recklessly
Ex. He often rushes headlong into relationships with little thought given to their long-term effect.
Stefan makes headlong decisions in order to protect Elena without thinking about the consequences.
Epilogue
/e-pe-log/ (noun)
Definition: a concluding section that rounds out a literary work
: a speech given at the end of a play to the audience by an acor
: concluding section of a musical piece
Ex. The actor in the Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet, delivered the epilogue to the audience.
The epilogue that the author created for the novel Iqbal tells us the day Iqbal died and the
accusation by Eshan Khan against the carpet mafia.
Pique
/PEEK/ (verb)
Definition: to arouse curiosity or interest
Ex. Our curiosity was piqued by the locket chest hidden at the back of the old ship.
If you keep on dodging my questions, that’ll only pique my curiosity about your past.
