1. Applied Media Aesthetics
● Effective understanding and use of media aesthetics
can determine whether images and sounds presented
on a media display screen will be recognized and
understood in the manner and with the emphasis
intended.
2. What Media Aesthetics All About?
● Becoming more conscious of visual and sound cues
that we constantly use to identify and understand
objects and conditions in the physical world in order
to effectively and safely function in it.
3. ● Gaining or expanding an understanding of the use of
those cues and their impact when presenting images
and sounds in motion pictures, television,
videogames, the internet, and various media display
screens, in order to effectively use those cues it
provide emphasis for visual and sound elements that
will direct viewer attention and increase the
influence of those elements in shaping the
impressions and understanding of the environment
and objects presented.
4. ● These Include persuasive cues that are given by: -- the
type, amount, and direction of light and the nature of the
shadows produced
-- the selection, arrangement, and intensity of color
-- the placement and motion of the camera
-- the selection and change of the camera's optical settings
-- the framing of objects and their arrangement within the
frame
-- the type, duration, and spacing of edits
-- the sequencing of shots
-- the selection and manipulation of the characteristics of
sound and its layering
6. Sound
● Sound is extremely important in all media. Different
background music or noises can completely change
the mood of the scene. In some cases give the scene a
whole other meaning.
● By manipulating the sound it gives the audience a
different perception on what is going on.
● In this clip I will show how different theme music
and a laugh track can change this Breaking Bad
scene.
7. Light and Color
● Light and color are extremely important to
distinguishing and control the mood of film or
television. The light and color wants to intensify and
clarify what is happening in that moment.
● A scene I chose is one of my favorite because there is
not one spoken word, however, we can tell
immediately what is happening in the scene. The
lighting and colors help us to determine that.
● Look out for many shadows that adds texture and
draws your eye to what is going on.
8. Space
●
●
●
●
Everything exists within space.
The media creates objects to fill this space on both a
2 dimensional and 3 dimensional plane.
Space and the defining of space exists in every
media form, film, photography etc.
And we focus of the placement of things within
space to create a mimetic experience.
Mimetic being as close to real life as possible.
16. Time
●
●
●
Time is a natural occurrence .
With or without the clocks and various calendars
used all over the world, it is something we
experience .
In images and the media, which intend to mimic
our real lives as close to possible, the aesthetic of
time is incredibly important in making the media
we create follow the natural patterns of life.
17. Time is...
Objective- The time measured on a clock
Subjective- The time we feel and experience
Biological- The time set by our body and natural
habits
18. Time+Motion Connection
●
●
●
●
In various media productions we use time to
connect with the viewer, effectively in either an
objective or a subjective manner often times with
both as the intended feeling.
Motion and time are often viewed as one aesthetic
as they are dependent upon one another.
Motion in media often gives you an idea of objective
time through subjective terms
While time gives you objective first with subjective
being perceived per the viewer.
19. Motion
The text describes motion as “the most obvious
manifestations of time”
● This creates the fourth dimensional field of the
moving image.
● When we think about motion we think about the
Figure/Ground Principle and how it is used to
calculate references for motion
● We judge motion against stable points in the image.
●
20. ● What stable cues are
grounding the moving image
within the 2d plane?
● What cues are suggesting
motion?
23. ● Through these image aesthetics we are able to understand
and apply them within our media.
● As our society evolves we will see more of these elements
introduced to help us in our perceptive decision making.
● We understand the general effectiveness of these cues in
relaying perception, through context, and allowing the
beauty in creating a mimetic environment through film,
photography and experience be decided by us.
● We use this knowledge of media aesthetics to become
more aware of the surroundings that shape our
perception.
