The document discusses photos used in different sections of a magazine about a dance artist. Photos on the front cover and contents page were chosen to emphasize the artist's quirky personality and role as a DJ. Photos in the double page spread used different angles and shots to explore the artist in action. One photo was modified to have the artist holding a lightsaber breaking through the page spread with exploding background effects. Rejected photos were not used due to issues like blurriness, incorrect context, duplicate shots, or not being usable.
Front cover photo emphasizes quirky dance scene artist
1. Photos used within front cover
This image was used within the front cover of
my magazine as it really emphasises the
quirky, out going nature of the dance scene
and specifically the artist for the double page
spread. It was a good quality photo for the
camera that I possessed. I used a contrasting
colour background so that the image would be
easier to cut out when modified within
Photoshop where the production of the
magazine is done. I used the magnetic lasso
tool and the magic wand to remove the
background to have a clear image. The outline
was then further blurred to remove any
unsightly cut edges.
2. Photos used within contents page
The image within the contents page
are used to emphasis the artist is a DJ
and shows the audience the artist in
‘action’. The different variety of angles
and camera shots make each of the
three image different, even if the
setting is the same (Home producing).
The three image are placed at the top
of the contents page above the
section linked with the double page
spread therefore making a cohesive
link. The only modification to the
image were that they were re-sized
and that one image is flipped to the
other side angle as all the image are
facing one direction and not each
other.
3. Photos used within Double Page spread
The use of three different images of the double
page, explores the different variety of shots
from a point view, medium shot and long shot.
The close up of the mixing connotes the artist in
‘action’ and shows the point of view of the artist
when performing. The quirky but aggressive
medium shot of the artist with his new record
reinforces the quirkiness and uniqueness that
the EDM scene has with artists such as the
fictional Cyber DJ. The only modification was to
the bottom image were the background was
taken out using the magnetic lasso tool and the
magic wand with certain ‘touch ups’ using the
blur and soft eraser tool within Photosho.
4. The use of this image for the double page
spread for a full body shot of the artist so
that audience are able to recognise the
artist, the pose and the props used (light
saber) links with star wars reference
within the title, 1V A NEW HOPE, which
has different connotations of star wars
and that the artist is a new hope within
the dance scene. The image has been
adjusted slightly with the extension of the
light sabres, using the smudge tool, going
across the double page spread so that it
suggests the artist is breaking through the
pages. Moreover the effect on the
background of the image with the
exploding background shows the artists
breaking through and reference to his
intense bass music. The artist was taken
out of the background using the magnetic
lasso and the magic wand tool as well as
the blur tool to ‘touch up’ the edges.
5. Example of rejected photos
These are a few examples of the rejected photos which were
not going to be used within the magazine. For instance
reasons such as:
• Out of focus
• Blurry
• Not in the right context
• Shot angle does not look right
• Similar shot used somewhere else within the magazine
• Not useable
• Experimentation of shots
