Project intention Digitarium Bratislava
1. Project Intention
Name of Project: Natural Sciences Digitarium in Bratislava
A. Project Objectives:
• Through interactive educational excursions, lectures and projections for primary and
secondary schools make scientific studies at universities more attractive.
• After opening the planetarium create the conditions to produce own program content
and projections in collaboration with universities with technical orientation, especially
the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics, division of Applied Informatics
• Create an attractive place for tourists and families and thus improve leisure time
facilities for visitors as well as local people.
B. Target Groups
•
•
•
•
Pupils in primary and secondary schools - the organization of school trips and
lectures for schools from the Bratislava region. There are 14 thousand pupils studying
at high schools alone in BSK. With the design capacity of 80 seats, a one-hour
presentation and 6-hour operation during the day fixed for school visits, it would take
nine weeks to satisfy every high school. There are 45 thousand primary school pupils,
= almost seven months fully booked planetarium.
University students focusing on scientific studies (Department of Astronomy, Physics
of the Earth and Meteorology, Comenius University, Department of Applied
Informatics, Comenius University), studio visual effects Academy of Performing Arts,
Tourists and families with children.
Presentations to interest groups and courses, organizing lectures for the public.
C. Monitoring Indicators
•
•
The projected annual attendance: 25,000 primary and secondary school pupils,
10,000 tourists. Attendance of the Digitarium in Brno in the long term is around 70
thousand per year.
Production of 10 visual sequences a year in cooperation with the Faculty of
Mathematics, Physics and Informatics (Department of Applied Informatics) and Studio
for Visual Effects at the Academy of Performing Arts using 3D graphics production
units from RSA Cosmos. Visual sequences will be not only scientific but also artistic
and involve presentations as well.
D. Budget
•
•
•
Realty phase:
The provision of place to install the planetarium - long lease or construction of
greenfield or remodeling and renovation of existing property.
The main condition is that the planetarium building should be as close to the center,
or other significant location, where there will be the greatest movement of people and
tourists possible. An optimal location for example is Storage building No.7 near
EUROVEA, only a few dozen meters from the statue of the famous Slovak politician
and astronomer, M.R.Stefánik.
The projection dome should have a diameter of 9 m and inclination of 7 °, the
projection room will have 80 seats.
2. •
The building itself does not need to have a dome. It is important to provide space to
build it in the interior. The projection room should have a minimum height of 11 m and
10 m x 10 m floor plan.
Costs depend on whether the locating of the planetarium will be resolved by renting,
construction on a greenfield site, or by buying an older building and reconstructing it.

•
Technological phase:
Digital Planetarium from the Czech company Nowatron Electronic (their solution was
installed this autumn in Brno Observatory and Planetarium halls with a capacity of
160 seats).
9 m fiberglass projection dome from RSA Cosmos with a special coating and
installation.
Controller, 2D/3D projection system, servers, interface, 5.1 audio system,
Production unit to produce its own visualizations
License of 4 movies,
Training of personnel.
Costs depending on the final configuration of individual projection and production
modules: 585.000 € to 689.000 €.
•
•
•
Administration:
Management and Administration of Digitarium - 2 employees.
Lecturers and speakers - external collaborators, educators, students.
Conference room for meetings of the production team and the organization of training
courses and lectures.
E. Finance
The Digitarium project in Bratislava plans to gain finance from these sources:
•
•
•
A grant from the EU structural funds Education or Research and Development
operational program, in accordance with the goal to support the infrastructure of
universities to improve the conditions of the educational process.
The Grant Scheme Agency has the support of the LPP research and development
program - fostering human potential in research and development, commercialization
and popularization of science.
Private sources and sponsors.
