2. Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship
Incorporated ® was founded on October 12,
1962, by 14 young black men at Morgan State
College (Now a state University) in Baltimore,
Maryland. The “ Great Eight ” Black Greek
organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic
Council were established long before this
period, but in the turmoil of the 1960’s these 14
young men felt the need to create a new and
progressive force in our society that would
address the needs of the emerging Black
community.
This organization was to be based on
Afrocentric pride and principles in the hope of
continuing the process of uplifting the Black
man, the Black community, and society overall.
Although in our beginnings our membership
consisted entirely of African Americans, over
the course of the following years, we have come
to gain members of various cultural and ethnic
3. The purpose of this organization is to
promote academic awareness and
good ethical standards; to promote
unity and fellowship among
college and graduate level men; to
create intelligent and effective
leadership; to study and alleviate
those social and economic
problems concerning boys and
men in order to improve the
stature of mankind.

5. The term we use to describe ourselves in a organizational context is “Non-
Greek.” As such, we often find ourselves having to explain why we have the
symbol “Phi” in our name. In regards to our use of the symbol “Phi” we have
come to adopt the following meaning:
In the book “Secrets of the Great Pyramids” by Peter Thompkins, we are
told that the ancient Khemet people of Africa (more popularly known as the
ancient Egyptians) originated “Phi” as a symbol of the creative properties of
the male reproductive system and more loosely as “reproduction in an
endless series.” It was a symbolic representation of the “Fire of Life”. This
symbol of fertility was adopted in our name to stand for our continual
growth and development. Our “Phi” should in no way be confused with the
Greek symbol “Phi”, which takes on the same look but a totally different
meaning.
6. The seeds of education, community service, dedication, commitment and brotherhood
were planted by our 14 Founders, and continue to enhance the quality of the Fellowship
and the communities in which we live. Through the conviction and practice of those
beliefs at our side, the Fellowship's contributions to society and its membership have
increased to new dimensions.
To better serve our communities, the men of Groove Phi Groove S.F.I.® have pledged to
support endeavors that project positive images of Black-American men, and which
accomplish the goal of moving us and men of every race and ethnic background
forward. This is an increasingly important challenge during a period when many others
are content only to focus on the negative elements, and to see us lose those
achievements that bare the anguish, blood and lives of the many Black-Americans who
were essential in building this nation.
7. Our National Founders attributed the significance of the letters and
colors of Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship Inc. ® to the African
American’s economic, political, and social living conditions. The
colors black and white have principal importance to the Fellowship by
symbolizing the idea of balancing life-forces. The letter is meant to
acknowledge the belief in a higher power that is infinite.
8. Despite these disruptive factors, the men of Groove Phi Groove S.F.I.®
have accepted the challenge and recognize that our successes will be
significantly influenced by our ability to serve as role models who can infuse
positive moral values in our children, and those young Black- American men
who may not have the benefit of a strong male influence in their lives.
The members of Groove Phi Groove S.F.I.® will continually strive to set the
right example by doing our best, pulling our weight, and keeping the best
interest of our families, communities and the Fellowship first and foremost in
our hearts and minds. The strength of our brotherhood can only be measured
by the ties that bond us.
