2. Sustainable development means ‘development
should take place without damaging the
environment, and development in the present
should not compromise with the needs of the future
generations.’
Example of sustainability of water is:
GROUNDWATER.
3. Groundwater is an example of a renewable resource.
These resources are replenished by nature. However
even these resources may be overused. As in the case of
groundwater, if we use more than what is replenished by
nature then we would be overusing this resource.
Groundwater makes up about twenty percent of the
world's fresh water supply, which is about 0.61% of the
entire world's water, including oceans and permanent ice.
Global groundwater storage is roughly equal to the total
amount of freshwater stored in the snow and ice pack,
including the north and south poles. This makes it an
important resource which can act as a natural storage
that can buffer against shortages of surface water, as in
during times of drought.
4. “Recent evidences have suggested that groundwater
is under serious threat of overuse in many parts of the
country. About 300 districts have reported a water
level decline of over 4 metres during the past 20 years.
Nearly one-third of the country is overusing their
groundwater reserves. In another 25 years, 60% of the
country would be doing the same if the present way of
using this resource continues. Groundwater overuse is
particularly found in the agriculturally prosperous
regions of Punjab and Western U.P., hard rock plateau
areas of central and south India in some coastal areas
and the rapidly growing urban settlements.”
