Cloning endangered and extinct species
1. Cloning Endangered and Extinct Species By, Gregory De Cola and Tyler Amaral, Mrs. Martinez period 6
2. Basic Principals of Genetics “My scientific studies have afforded me great gratification; and I am convinced that it will not be long before the whole world acknowledges the results of my work.”-Gregor Mendel Traits are controlled by alleles because if a dominant allele is present a recessive will not show, but a recessive allele will show if the dominant allele is not present. Traits are passed from parent to offspring through chromosomes. 23 chromosomes from each parent determine what the offspring’s genotype and phenotype will be.
3. Human Genome Project The Human Genome Project started in 1990 by Ari Patrinos. This projects goals were to identify all of the genes in human DNA, determine a sequence for 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up the human DNA and more. The implications of this project towards ethical, social and legal issues was that Health insurance company’s might not insure you because you have a high risk to get a serious disease. That is why President George W. Bush signed the Genetic information non discrimination act. This act ensured that no insurance company can discriminate a client based on information from genetic tests.
4. Genetic disorders (Cont.) Genetic counseling can help the perspective of parents with genetic disorders regarding future offspring because then the parents can know what to get their child tested for, or to help them know what treatments to treat their child with. Karyotypes can be used to predict genetic disorders because if you get a karyotype of your offspring and you see it has too many chromosome 21’s then your offspring will have Down Syndrome. Or a pedigree which is a family tree could see if you can develop any hereditary diseases.
5. Genetic disorders There are 3 types of genetic disorders these are single gene disorders, chromosome abnormalities, and multifactorial disorders. These vary because single cell disorders are caused by a mutated gene. On the other hand Chromosome abnormalities are caused by having too many or too less chromosomes. However Multifactorial disorders are caused by a gene mutation from environmental factors. Even those the disorders have a lot of differences they all happen because of mutated genes.

8. Why Cloning Endangered and/or extinct species is good. "Bringing back an extinct creature would unlock the door to progress. Who knows what other 'impossible' things may be on the other side?" -Michael Archer Some species that are extinct can be used to make medicines that can cure diseases like we can test a new medicine on a cloned pig for example. If it has deadly symptoms then we will still have the original chromosome listings from the original pig It is also good because humans can clone lost pets or animals need for medical use like a seeing eye dog
9. Why Cloning Endangered and/or extinct species is good(Cont.) If we can clone extinct animals than we can create Organisms from long ago even Dinosaurs (if we get a good enough DNA sample we might be able to genetically engineer it)! Imagine seeing a museum with live Dinosaurs! This could also mean that we can restore a lot of species who died off because of natural disasters or being hunted down.
10. Why people are against cloning extinct and/or endangered species. People believe that if these animals are extinct or going extinct is for a reason, and if we bring them back then it will disrupt the food chain. Another reason why people are against this is if the animal died off because of an environmental change then we would bring it back just so the species could suffer again.
11. Why those people are wrong If this animal that we clone causes such a destruction of the food chain than we can just reinforce whatever made it extinct. Also this situation will probably never happen because the food change adapts all of the time to new species or old ones dying off. If we clone a species that cannot survive in a present day environment than we can scientifically create an artificial environment for them.
12. Has this been done before? No scientist has ever genetically cloned an extinct species but they have cloned common animals like sheep and cows and other animals. Which means that they can genetically clone Endangered species like pandas and cheetahs. In fact scientists are currently working on cloning a Tasmanian tiger. The only bad thing is that cloned animals don’t live as long as the original species.
13. Graphs and pictures on cloning extinct and/or endangered species The Tasmanian Tiger Graph showing the differences between original cows and cloned cows.
14. Conclusion In conclusion I feel that cloning extinct and/or endangered species is right and the federal government should fund it. Even though the new species will have a lower life expectancy than the original species, we can still use it to cure human illnesses. We can also use these animals for our personal observation, like dinosaurs and other mysterious extinct animals.
