Describe your idea for the brief:
My idea for the brief is a music magazine focused around the current and well known
sub-genre of pop music. I have decided on the name of ‘Desire Pop’ for my
magazine as it is very memorable and unique, with positive connations behind both
meanings, suggesting that the magazine will be good/successful with a clear future
path ahead of it. In addition to this, I choose to use the word “Desire” as it is a very
powerful word used to describe something you’d want to be/have etc. Implying that
this word being in my masthead would suggest that everybody desires to be a part of
this industry, as it will be a well-established and popular magazine. Also I choose to
use the word “pop” to link back to my main focus of pop music, which will appeal
directly to my target audience as it is of their interest. My double page spread will
entail an interview with an award winning popstar, where frequently asked question
sent in by fans will be answered. This will intrigue my target audience into wanting to
read this article, as they will be interesting in knowing the answers to these
questions. Also this specific target audience like to be up to date with gossip and
information, so that they are with the latest trends and not missing out. Throughout
my mazagine I will be using a wide range of vibrant and fun colours to attract my
target audiences attention, however I have a small range of colours in which I will be
using mainly throughout the whole of the magazine.
Genre/ sub genre: The main two magazines that have inspired my look and
design for own music magazine are both all established companies, that are of the
same genre and target audience to my own magazine. These magazines are We
Love Pop and Top of the Pops.
Target audience: My Primary audience will be teenagers and young adults that are
female, as I feel pop is a popular and well listening to music genre within young
people’s lifestyle and tends to influence females more. Also my primary audience will
have similar interests to every average teenage, such as a strong music influence,
love to socialise and enjoying being up to date with the latest trends, suggesting that
due to this they can make relevant and popular conversation amongst their peer
group. However, my secondary audience will be male teenagers and young adults
with similar interest to my primary audience, but not as influenced by pop music as
others.
Major conventions: I will use major conventions throughout such as a masthead,
sell lines, dominant image, sub-images and main sell line etc. All these features will
be used to attract and appeal to my target audience, as they will stand out and
caught the reader’s attention making them want to read on and find out more. In
addition to this I’ll be including page numbers on my content page so that it can be
read easily and quickly. For example, if there’s a particular article in which somebody
wants to read or is looking for, they will be able to locate it quickly with no problem. I
will also include a pull quote over my dominant images on my front cover and double
spread to intrigue the readers by giving them an insight. I decided that I would have
the pull quote overlapping the dominant images to suggest that’s there’s more to the
popstar then just her persona, that her actual thoughts and feelings are more
important than what the media presents her as.
Conventions I may not use: I will be using most of the popular and effective
conventions as I believe they are essential when making a magazine look
professional and interesting. However, I feel that some conventions aren’t very
appealing, useful and won’t fit in within the structure/design of my magazine. For
example I don’t plan on using a strapline/slogan as I don’t think it is needed and it
just adds to making the front covers look overly crowded.

Original images: For my dominant image I have produced a mid-shot of my model
at a direct angle, this original image was captured at the beach. However, I am
considering removing the background and replacing it with a neutral coloured
background to enforce more attention on the model rather than the background. Also
I was planning on added a few sub-images to be signed alongside my dominant
image on the front cover so it isn’t too plain and simple, but I don’t want these sub-
images to distract the reader away from the main focus. For my content page I am
planning on using another original image, this time a long shot of my model to show
all the model including stance, facial expression and some of the background. To
imply that nothing has being hidden behind the camera and to create a connection/
relationship between the readers and company to enforce trust and loyalty. Then for
my double page spread I am planning on having an extreme long shot in which I
have taken previously, so that it will fit across both pages in the spread.
Potential difficulties/ Plan B: If my model can’t make it to the shoot due to a
problem or a busy schedule then I will have to look for another suitable model at the
last minute, which will be proven difficult. As a lost resort I might have to hire
somebody to take the photographs of me, however I will be advising them what angle
and shot to produce as they are my own images and I have my own ideas/thoughts
on how I want my photos to turn out. I will full responsible for the outcome.
