2. What is 5S ?
5S was developed in Japan
5S is the name of a workplace organization method
that uses a list of five Japanese words: seiri, seiton,
seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke
The list describes how to organize a work space for
efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and
storing the items used, maintaining the area and
items, and sustaining the new order
3. The Good 5S’s
Seiri (sort): segregate wanted and unwanted material
Seiton (set): Arrange all necessary items in order so
they can be easily available for use
Seiso (sweep/shine): Use cleaning as inspection
Seiketsu (standardized): Maintain cleanliness and
orderliness
Shitsuke (sustain): Sticking to the rules and
following the above 4 s forever
8. Shitsuke
Shitsuke is the most difficult ‘S’ to implement
Despite the presence of dustbin, cleanliness is not
followed
But all other practices are adhered to and follow
consistently for a period
Hence, the practice of sustenance is follow
9. Beneficial aspects of 5S
Prevents the incidents of unnecessary buying
Provides clarity as what is in stock
Reduces unnecessary handling as there are less
number of items to handle
Reduces number of lockers/cabinets for storage
Easy retrievability of material
Time taken to search is minimised
Early identification of problems like cracks /oil
lekages
Safe working conditions
10. Lessons learned by the team
Less Waste (Improved Efficiency) is the key
advantage of 5S which leads to: Reduced Space Used
For Storage, Improved Maintenance, Improved
Safety, Better More Committed Employees,
Improved Quality
It is of utmost importance to not only improve but
also sustain the improved factors for any kind of
processes
