1. Unit 57: Photography and
Photographic Practice
Research of other
photographers work
2. Photographer: Colin Prior
Colin Prior is known as one of the best
landscape photographers in the UK. He
was born in Glasgow and often used the
highlands of Scotland as his place to take
photos before he moved on to other places
around the world. He has also released five
books.
4. Choose an image…. Describe it
• The photo was taken somewhere in
Alaska in an area with lots of
mountains and wasteland.
• He has framed the photo so you can
see the majority of the snowy
mountain in the distance but also so
you can see everything in front of it
such as the wasteland and the little
puddles of water.
• You can also see some of the sky in
the photo above the mountain, it is
pure blue with any clouds in the
photo.
5. Composition
He has chosen to frame the photo so that the highest point of the
mountain is right in the middle of the photo and it also looks as
though he’s made the left hand side of the photo the wasteland
area and some of the right hand side is just water. Had he zoomed
out we would of some more of the mountain but it seems as if it
wasn’t worth including in the photo. It would probably of been more
of the same so he chose not to include it in the photo.
6. Techniques used
It doesn’t look like he’s used any techniques in the photo.
Based off his other work he doesn’t tend to use techniques in
his work.
7. Strengths & Weaknesses
I like his style of framing the photos, knowing what is best to
be included in the photos and what is best to be left out. I
like how he includes as many different things as he can in his
photos and includes different things in every photo. His
weaknesses are that he doesn’t use many techniques but I
think his work looks good enough anyway without them.
