What is it?
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Enter the cloud
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
A model for delivering information technology services in which
resources are retrieved from the internet through web-based tools and
applications on-demand, rather than a direct connection to a server. Data
and software packages are stored in servers. However, cloud computing
structure allows access to information as long as an electronic device has
access to the web. This type of system allows employees to work
remotely.
The Average Cloud user
Connects to the cloud via the Internet
Does computing tasks, or
Runs applications, or
Stores Data

Cloud Computing Services
 Software as a Service (SaaS)-End UsersSoftware as a Service (SaaS)-End Users
 Platform as a Service (PaaS)- Network ArchitectsPlatform as a Service (PaaS)- Network Architects
 Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)-Application DevelopersInfrastructure as a Service (IaaS)-Application Developers
Software as a Service-End Users (SaaS)
 Also known as On-demand Service.
 Is an application that can be accessed from anywhere on the world as long as
you can have an computer with an Internet Connection.
 We can access this cloud hosted application without any additional hardware
or software.
 E.g. : G-mail, Yahoo mail, Hotmail, Facebook etc..
Presented by: Rohit Sarkar& Kanishka Roy
Platform as a Service (PaaS)
 In the PaaS model, cloud providers deliver a computing platform, typically
including operating system, programming language execution environment,
code deployment, database, and web server.
 Application developers can develop and run their software solutions on a
cloud platform without the cost.
 Some PaaS offers, to match application demand resources need not to be
allocated manually, so that the cloud user faces any problem. Required
services are provided by the vendor.
 E.g.: Salesforce.com, Windows Azure etc.
Presented by: Rohit Sarkar& Kanishka Roy
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
 Also known as hardware as a service.
 Is a computing power that you can rent for a limited period of time.
 Allows existing applications to be run on a cloud suppliers hardware.
 Cloud providers offer computational abilities and computers – as physical or
more often as virtual machines – raw (block) storage, firewalls, load
balancers.

Cloud Architecture
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Modes of Clouds
 Public Cloud
• Computing infrastructure is hosted by cloud vendor at the vendors premises.
• Can be shared by various organizations.
• E.g. : Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Sales force
 Private Cloud
• The computing infrastructure is dedicated to a particular organization and not
shared with other organizations.
• More expensive and more secure when compare to public cloud.
• E.g. : HP data center, IBM, Sun, Oracle, 3tera
 Hybrid Cloud
• Organizations may host critical applications on private clouds.
• Where as relatively less security concerns on public cloud.
• Usage of both public and private together is called hybrid cloud.
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
The Cloud Requires
An Internet connection
An account - Created with a user name and a
password
Agree to Terms
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
So what is the cloud?
Computing and software resources that are delivered on demand, as service.

Computer Storage
Computers have internal or hard drive storage(C:
Drive)
CPU has a drive for storing programs, documents,
pictures, videos, presentations, etc…
Cannot access this content from another device or
computer
Central Processing Unit
(CPU)
Inside the Computer
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Programs
Purchase programs
Load to the computer
Each computer would
need the program
loaded and stored on
the internal drive
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
External Storage
Allows your content to become
mobile
Save to the storage device
Take device to any compatible
computer
Open and use content
Networked Storage
Multiple work stations talk to one unit that stores
information and data.
Data is not saved to the C: drive, but to a network
drive
Can retrieve the data stored to the network from any
of the connected workstations.
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Cloud Storage
Create an Account –
User name and password
Content lives with the
account in the cloud
Log onto any computer
with Internet to find
your content.
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Downloads for storage
Download a cloud based app to a computer you own
The app lives on your Computer
Save files to the app
When connected to the Internet it will sync with the
cloud
The Cloud can be accessed from any device with
Internet connection.
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Upload Documents
Log-in to the online storage account
Click upload a file
Find the file on hard drive, network, or external
storage
Upload to cloud storage
5 GB
5 GB
2 GB
7 GB
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Software and applications

Document Creation
Google Docs
SkyDrive
Box
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Download required?
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
 One can even download the created document if the he wants.
 Can also edit the document afterwards.
Benefits
Saving Large Files
Multiple file types – Photos, videos, presentations,
docs
Back-up of stored files
File Sharing
Access from devices
Nothing to forget (thumb drive, cd)
Project collaboration
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
File Sharing
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
 We can share files if we want.
 Or we share a link of a file to any recipient.
Other Software services
Photo editing software
Online banking apps
Social media apps
Communication
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Advantages
Can be less expensive compared to buying software and hardware
Can be used from any computer or device with an Internet connection
The device does not need as large of an internal storage system
Compatible with most computers and operating systems
Updates occur across the service
Presented By: Rohit Sarkar & Kanishka Roy
Disadvantages
Sometimes they hike prices
Security and privacy in the Cloud
Technical Difficulties and Server failure
Limited control and flexibility
Cloud computing remains strong and has great
potential for the future. Its user base grows
constantly and more big players are attracted to it,
offering better and more fine tuned services and
solutions. We can only hope that the advantages
will further grow and the disadvantages will be
mitigated, since cloud computing seems to have
made IT a little bit easier.
Happy CLOUD COMPUTING!!!

Editor's Notes

  1. I hear this question often. It is not easy to explain, because it means different things depending on who you talk to. Today’s Webinar will focus on the basics of what cloud computing is and what it means to the average library user and the library staff member.
  2. I would bet everyone in attendance today uses the cloud. I am going to show a slide with several examples of cloud based applications. I would like you to count up how many from this sampling you use. I will then put up a poll question to get your answers.
  3. Take the poll Have you used the cloud For one, two, three, or more of these services
  4. The typical cloud software requires an account. You are asked to fill out a form like the example here for Google Mail. You also have to agree to the Terms of Service. Raise your hand on the dashboard if you have checked agree to Terms of Service without reading. Thanks for being honest. I highly recommend you go back and read those…you may learn some interesting things. The Privacy policies are also very revealing…check them out.
  5. An Internet connection is necessary for cloud computing The cloud is actually a bunch of computer servers that store and transmit data These servers are very large and can hold massive amounts of data The servers can be housed anywhere in the world A user accesses the data through a log-in
  6. To understand how we got into the cloud, you need to understand a little about computer storage.
  7. We also use networked storage which is more commonly found in businesses and organizations. Still internal to the organization
  8. Each brand of cloud storage offers different levels of service. You can find your content and read it from any device with an Internet connection, but you may not be able to edit it from any computer.
  9. Some of these services offer an app download that adds a storage folder to your computer. Some services require that you download the app.
  10. I am curious to know how many people in attendance are using one of the types of cloud storage. I will launch a poll to get your input. I am also wondering what you like about the cloud storage service you use. Please type this response into the chat box.
  11. We will keep using the same four examples to discuss applications, for sake of ease.
  12. Some cloud storage services also offer document creation services.
  13. Cloud storage allows you to share files with anyone. Files can be made public, for anyone to search and find or it can be shared with one person and you can decide if the people the file is shared with can view or edit the file.
