3. MIDDLE SCHOOL
HIGH SCHOOL
COLLEGE
I learned a lot of great stuff in school, here’s what made a
difference:
In all my experience in school,
Having a supportive group of people who want to see your
success really pushed me forward.
As well as entering in art contests and galleries were people
from all around got to see my art
Meeting new people who have the same or similar goals made
me want to try harder and create more.
I went to Arthur and Polly Mays Conservatory of the Arts for
both Middle and High School!
4. PORTFOLIO BUILDING
In this workshop I'll explain:
• What is and how to find a concentration for
your portfolio
• How to put so many amazing pieces into one
solid portfolio
• Types of Portfolio’s
• What kind of pieces fit together
• Decide what pieces go in and which pieces to
leave out
✔❌
You want to be able to show
versatility and technical skills with
the group of pieces you choose to
out together. Make a portfolio that
show off who you are and what you
can do!
5. KNOWING THE BASICS
DEPENDING ON WHAT GOALS THAT NEED TO BE ACHIEVED ARE,
LEARNING THE FOUNDATION RELATING TO THE TOPIC OF INTEREST FOR A
BETTER UNDERSTANDING.
• Everything comes with a place of origin, having your own references is a great way to interpret what is being studied
• For example: If I want to make a piece of a person, I would take pictures of different people for all angles to
understand their face shape and who the lighting affects the shapes that make up their face.
• The best way to learn is through experience!
• Practicing still lifes and landscapes may not be the most exciting however, it does help to understand the flow and
balances of the basic elements of art such as: Color shape, form, value, texture, space, and line.
• As well as the principles of design: Balance, unity, variety, emphasis, movement, pattern, and proportion
• Teachers, judges, people reviewing your applications are looking for the understanding of theses keys factors
6. WHAT KIND OF ART DO YOU MAKE?
DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF ART THAT YOU MAKE WILL DETERMINE THE KIND
OF PORTFOLIO YOU NEED
PHYSICAL ART
Drawings, paintings, sculptures, pottery,
etc. Need the following:
• Wide space
• Good lighting
• Decent camera
• Photo editor (if contrast or lighting
needs touching up)
DIGITAL ART
• High resolution
• Multiple saved files
• Photo editor
7. ARTIST STATEMENT
Now that all the pieces are done, here comes the hard part... Explaining it all! Don't
worry though, through my workshops we'll focus on the keys of making an artist
statement.
Which includes an explanation on what an Artist Statement is, how to explain what
the concentration of pieces are, how the art was created, and what is the story
behind each piece on a few short sentences.
Writing an artist Statement can be a daunting task but, I'm here to help!
8. PREPARING TO SHOW OFF YOUR PORTFOLIO
Photographing your art work
One of the most, if not the most, important things when putting a portfolio together is taking the perfect
picture of each piece going into the portfolio.
• Make sure that the work looks the absolute best!
• Lighting, angles, and high quality photos are everything! (The best lighting is usually natural, partly
cloudy works best in my opinion)
• If the pieces are digital works, high resolution pieces are a MUST!
• Always save photos to multiple places
• Double and triple check the pieces for any touch-ups they might need as well as an mistakes the artist
statement might have
