While developers differ in their selection of tools and coding language of choice, many face the same challenges that are hindering productivity. Often times, developers have to use multiple systems to manage their source code and project artifacts. Couple that with the highly distributed nature of today’s work environment, and it’s no wonder why development teams lack visibility and a holistic view of the entire software development lifecycle. This can be problematic, especially in light of increasingly shorter turnaround times for bringing products to market. Code hosting and collaboration platforms, on the other hand, solve those challenges. We will talk about why these platforms are needed for today’s developers and how they create a consolidated environment that allows developers to be autonomous, and as a result, more productive. Specifically, we will delve into the following benefits of code hosting platforms: • Self-Service: Rather than waiting on IT, project managers can fulfill their own requests through fine-grained permissions and delegated user management with the LDAP/AD system. • Developer Flexibility: Modern platforms are now accommodating multi-repos and repository types (e.g., Git, Subversion, Maven, etc.) in one project. This is allowing development teams to exploit all of their development resources while maintaining a single source of truth. • Automation: Code hosting platforms automate processes (e.g., build notifications, repo creation) to the greatest extent possible, enabling developers to focus on developing the actual software. • Seamless Collaboration: Code hosting platforms streamline code reviews with merge request code reviews and flexible developer workflows. What’s more, users can set permission on feature branch workflows so approvals are required to merge changes. • Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery: Rather than isolating development from downstream processes, code hosting platforms synchronize with the continuous integration server and development tool chain (e.g., Jira, Slack, Jenkins) for continuous delivery.

Domänenspezifische Sprachen (engl. DSLs) sind seit jeher dazu geeignet, komplexe Ausdrücke kompakter und besser lesbar auszudrücken. Dabei befreien sie den Benutzer von der Notwendigkeit, wiederkehrende Programmfragmente zu pflegen. Sie reduzieren den Blick auf den wesentlichen Inhalt der zugrunde liegenden Domäne. Während es an sinnvollen Anwendungsgebieten von DSLs nicht mangelt, sind deren Funktionsweise und Erstellung oftmals zu Unrecht als Mysterium verschrieen. Domänenspezifische Sprachen unterteilen sich grundsätzlich in externe und interne DSLs. Externe DSLs definieren eine unabhängige eigene Sprache, z. B. Xtend oder SQL. Daher bedarf es zu deren Ausführung einer eigenständigen Syntaxanalyse, -validierung und eines Compilers oder Interpreters. Interne DSLs basieren auf Host-Programmiersprachen. Daher ist ihr Sprachumfang nicht abgeschlossen, sondern lässt sich durch deren Sprachelemente erweitern. Kotlin bietet mit Extension Functions und Lambdas with Receivers ideale Voraussetzungen für die Erstellung interner DSLs. Dies zeigt auch ein Blick auf die ständig wachsende Zahl von Kotlin-basierten DSLs, wie z. B. der Kotlin Gradle DSL oder der Spring Beans DSL. In diesem Vortrag sollen die Grundlagen zur Erstellung eigener DSLs mit Kotlin vermittelt werden. Anhand eines praxisorientierten Beispiels wird schrittweise eine DSL während des Vortrags erstellt.

Presented by: Antti Karjalainen Presented at the All Things Open 2021 Raleigh, NC, USA Raleigh Convention Center Abstract: Robotic process automation (RPA) is a technology used to build bots and digital workers to automate repetitive routine tasks and business processes. RPA became one of the hottest technologies in the enterprise space because it can unlock tremendous amounts of value that’s sitting inside every company’s operations and administration. We have seen multiple billion-dollar companies being created in this space, and now it’s spreading beyond the enterprise to mid-market. With all the growth happening in RPA, there are many misconceptions, bold claims, and fluffy marketing around it. Instead of being an AI-powered magic wand for inexperienced automators, RPA is a set of developer tools and technologies that enable secure and reliable execution of bots across a mixed set of environments and tasks. It is, in fact, the perfect target for good old open-source disruption. This talk will explain the basics of RPA (hint: it’s not real robots but software) and make a case for open-source in this industry. We will also dive into the technology behind RPA, explore why Python is the perfect platform for building it, and highlight some of the technical challenges that we have had to overcome to build the largest open-source ecosystem in RPA.
