SteelPurseProtoype
Began as an experiment for an art
show, the simple gesture of this utilitarian
sculpture caught the eye of a collector. The
first in what I hope is a series, the prototype
is in her care, and together we have ham-
mered out the flaws and idiosyncracies of
such a handbag in daily use. Another purse
was commissioned a year later, and that pur-
chaser maintains the same feedback policy.
The purse features a removable divid-
er, customizable interior, hands-free integrat-
ed mirror, magnetic closure, and ball bearing
feet—keeping the piece off the ground. And
of course, lifetime warranty.
Jeff&JackieDiCaroBar
Inspired in part by the couple’s love of
Frank Lloyd Wright, and partly by their love for
entertaining, I designed and built this bar over a
two year period. Drawing heavily on my own
bartending experience, I got the chance to build
a highly functional and user-friendly bar. The
frosted Plexiglass panels cover a system of dim-
mable track lights that are easily accessed from
interior door panels - to ensure quick bulb re-
placement, and the opportunity to play with col-
ored bulb options. Other features include hori-
zontal wine storage, a lockable liquor cabinet,
oversized “junk” drawer with towel-rack sized
pull, stainless steel work surface, and integrated
power outlet.
Analyses: VariousProjects
I find analysis to be not only
my “go-to” initial move, but also very
enjoyable. It is often a process of
slow revelation; part architectural
forensics, part catalogue.
Over the years I have developed
a mixed media method of analyzing
and interpreting site data. Each new
project has taught me to take note of
site-specific conditions while also
compiling a kind of graphic checklist.
