Resisting these threats involves technologists, activists and users building alternatives, movements and expressing their voice to protect an open web.
Salon.com Technology | Global Crossing's Winnick under scrutinySimon Avery
John Winnick founded Global Crossing in 1997 and rapidly grew it into the world's largest fiber optic network. However, the company collapsed in 2002, losing $50 billion in market value and filing for bankruptcy. Winnick had already cashed out over $700 million in stock sales prior to the collapse. Shareholders have sued Winnick and other executives, claiming they misled investors by inflating financial results. Regulatory agencies are investigating Global Crossing's accounting practices and potential criminal wrongdoing. Winnick denies any illegal activity but his lavish spending despite the company's troubles has angered shareholders who lost their investments.

This document discusses the evolution of privacy issues from protecting individuals from governments to now protecting individuals from large corporations and other individuals who collect and use personal data. It notes that privacy rules have become more complex as data usage has exploded with new technologies and practices. Going forward, further regulation may be needed to address algorithms and ensure data is used responsibly for innovation while still respecting individuals' rights over their own information.
Major music companies are trying to tackle piracy through consumer education on copyright, working with law enforcement, and litigation against pirate sites. They are also working with mobile app stores to remove infringing apps and ensure apps can't access illegal websites as mobile apps have become a major source of free, illegal music downloads. Record labels are experimenting with new CD technologies to prevent illegal copying of music from audio CDs. While lowering prices may reduce piracy, free streaming services now satisfy consumer demand for music. Piracy rates have declined significantly in recent years.
Large companies have increasingly used deceptive tactics on the internet to target audiences and market products, crossing legal and ethical lines regarding privacy and integrity. Edelman created fake blogs for Walmart, Ruckus Network set up a false Facebook profile to collect student info, and Sony admitted making "flog" fake blogs, while AOL released user search data publicly. Similar privacy breaches occurred at Hershey, Mrs. Fields, Xanga, and Myspace. As companies dominate the web, they sometimes overlook laws, so stricter regulations are needed to protect internet users' well-being.

A Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates approved a new bill that would greatly expand authorities' ability to monitor communications like email and phone calls. She explained her support by saying that after 9/11, civil liberties concerns about monitoring jaywalkers no longer mattered. Critics argue the bill compromises privacy and civil liberties.
This document discusses the issue of digital piracy from interviews with IT experts. The experts agree that piracy is on the rise due to easier sharing of information online and advances in technology like broadband internet. While companies spend millions fighting piracy, current solutions are limited and legal action is difficult across borders. The experts discuss how pricing digital content too high and restrictive digital rights management also contribute to piracy. They suggest that lowering prices through innovative licensing models and a combined effort of technological solutions, awareness campaigns, and policy changes could help address the issue over time.
This document provides an overview of data recovery techniques using forensic methods. It explains that when files are deleted, they are not truly erased but rather just marked as unused space. This allows for potential recovery if the space is not overwritten. The document walks through using Linux tools like dd to make a byte-for-byte image of a storage device. It then discusses mounting the image and using Foremost, a free data recovery tool, to scan for and extract recoverable files from the unused space. The goal is to demonstrate how basic computer forensics skills can be applied to recover photos that were accidentally deleted from a digital camera's memory card.
The document discusses trends that will shape the media and entertainment industry in 2017, including continued growth in piracy, expansion of over-the-top (OTT) services, and increased availability of 4K ultra-high-definition (UHD) content. Piracy is expected to be addressed through greater industry cooperation and use of watermarking technology. OTT services will likely add new features like catch-up viewing and expand into linear content. 4K UHD will drive new revenue but also faces challenges around costs, compatibility and security that will require holistic solutions.
1) The documentary The Great Hack focuses on the Cambridge Analytica scandal and the unethical harvesting and use of Facebook user data to manipulate political outcomes.
2) The scandal highlighted the lack of accountability and regulation of tech companies and their use of personal user data. It prompted discussions around data privacy, rights, and the need for new regulations.
3) Experts argue that data protection is a structural problem and that new comprehensive global frameworks are needed to regulate data use and establish stronger privacy rules. The Cambridge Analytica scandal was a turning point that increased awareness of these important issues around data and privacy.
1) The document discusses proposed legislation SOPA and PIPA which aim to curb internet piracy by blocking access to websites accused of copyright infringement.
2) It provides context on the history of internet piracy legislation including the shutdown of Napster and legal cases between the RIAA and Verizon.
3) The key concerns with SOPA and PIPA are that they give the government too much power to censor the internet and threaten innovation by collateraly affecting sites like Google, YouTube, and Wikipedia in addition to targeting piracy.
1) Computers will never be completely secure due to the immense complexity of software and the many potential vulnerabilities across entire technology supply chains.
2) The risks of computer insecurity are growing as computers are integrated into more physical systems like cars, medical devices, and household appliances through the "Internet of Things".
3) While technical solutions can help, the incentives for companies to prioritize security are often weak, and economic and policy tools may be needed to better manage cyber risks, such as through regulation, liability standards, and cybersecurity insurance.
This document summarizes a presentation by Aram Sinnreich on media innovation. It discusses how digital networks have disrupted traditional linear business models and cultural production. While industries lobby for stronger copyright laws, studies show the entertainment industry has still grown and "piracy" may benefit economies. The greatest threat is over-regulation that limits civil liberties and fair use. The presentation argues we need to abandon myths of scarcity and lone authorship, and instead of over-protection, prepare for a configurable culture through business, political and social innovation like copyleft and copyright reform.

The Dark Net is a hidden part of the internet that allows for anonymous browsing and communication. It is much larger than the surface web that is accessible through typical search engines. The Dark Net promotes anonymity and prevents censorship, but is also exploited for criminal activity like drug and weapons trading. It poses a threat as sensitive data from governments and businesses has been stolen and is available for sale on the Dark Net. Debates are ongoing on how to address security concerns while maintaining privacy, and whether businesses should play a role in investigating criminal networks on the Dark Net.
This document discusses several alternatives for developing more effective enforcement of American copyrights in Asia and globally, such as private agreements between companies and ISPs, tracking high-volume pirates, litigation against distributors, and blacklisting IP addresses. It also notes the scale of online piracy, with Google alone receiving over 200 million DMCA takedown requests in 2014. Adaption is needed from industries to survive technological changes, as occurred with radio, TV, and the internet. The document provides an overview of US and international copyright law.
Piracy involves the unauthorized duplication and distribution of copyrighted content. With advances in technology and the internet, online piracy has become a major issue for the movie and music industries. There are many forms of internet piracy, including peer-to-peer file sharing, torrent sites, and illegal streaming or downloads. For young people on tight budgets, the availability of free pirated content online is tempting when legal alternatives are perceived as too expensive. While cracking down on piracy supports content creators, some argue minor personal piracy should not be criminalized.

Software Patents After Alice: A Long and Sad Tailfreedeb
The United States Supreme Court's ruling in the landmark Alice vs. CLS Bank case has finally given the lower courts some tools they could use to overturn obvious and vague patents. Many judges have found for the defendant and overturned obvious patents. For entities with the time and money to fight bad patents in court, this is fantastic news. As many as four out of five of the software patents on the books in the US might be found invalid under the new doctrines. For everyone else, this is a mixed bag.
The document discusses how traditional DRM systems are often unable to withstand attacks from content pirates on open platforms. It introduces Irdeto ActiveCloak for Media as a solution that takes application protection further with integrated renewability, diverse security, and piracy monitoring to protect content across devices. Unlike past failures like Humpty Dumpty, Bernie Madoff, Mel Gibson, and the Titanic, ActiveCloak aims to provide all the necessary safeguards to prevent digital content from being "cracked" and ensure the livelihoods of the entertainment industry are preserved.

2009 10 21 Rajgoel Trends In Financial CrimesRaj Goel
The document summarizes trends in various types of financial crimes including data breaches, identity theft, mortgage fraud, and other cybercrimes from 2005 to 2009. It discusses specific cases like the Sony rootkit scandal and fraud involving forged deeds and stolen identities that resulted in people losing their homes. The document also mentions the large economic impact of crimes like telemarketing fraud and the growing problem of botnets and zombie computers being used to steal data and money.
Software piracy involves illegally copying or distributing copyrighted software without permission from the copyright holder. It deprives software companies of significant earnings each year from lost sales. Some of the most commonly pirated software titles in 2007 included Norton Anti-Virus, Adobe Photoshop, and AutoCAD. While software piracy may seem like a victimless crime, it negatively impacts both individuals and society by potentially exposing people to malware, costing jobs, raising legal software prices, and undermining the creative work of software developers. Individuals can help address this issue by educating themselves and others, reporting known cases of piracy, and only using properly licensed software.

Stačí mít nápad a zaujmout.
