YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS IN
SOVIET RUSSIA
Short Analysis on role of these groups and Stalin’s educational Policies
Youth Organizations
Two Important Groups :
1) Komsomol
2) Pioneers
Komsomol

 Organized in 1918
 Banded together various youth organizations that had
previously been involved in the Russian Revolution.
 New purpose was set in 1922—to engage the
members in health activities, sports, education,
publishing activities, and various service and industrial
  projects.
Creation of the Komsomol
The New Economic Policy (NEP) was accompanied
by a new social policy of moderation and
  discipline, especially regarding Soviet youth.
Lenin himself stressed the importance of political
education of young Soviet citizens in building a
  new society
Aims of Early CPSU in Komsomol
 Teach youth the values of Communism
 prepare them for life under the rule of the Communist
   Party.
 Rebuild Post-War Soviet Russia with the help of
   indoctrinated Proletariat class
 Extend CPSU control into family lives

 Create a subservient working class
Ambivalence of Komsomol under Early
USSR
 Key figures of the Revolution such as Vladimir
Lenin and Nikolai Bukharin differed on what was
    best for raising good communists.
Komsomol Under Stalin
 Under Stalin that the program reached a more
definite, finished form, where views of opposing
    revolutionaries were undermined and replaced
    with the Stalins firm beliefs
Komsomol Under Stalin
 To Stalin, the Komsomol was to be more than just a youth
organization. It was to be an auxiliary arm of the Soviet State.
 Like both Lenin and Bukharin before him, Stalin held that members
of the Komsomol needed to engage in physical labor and large
scale interaction to become truly effective Soviet citizens.
 Political and ideological indoctrinations were to be key tenants
for the Komsomol, and a hatred of all “enemies” of the working
class was to be a deeply imbued trait.
Using the Komsomol
 Create a stable, mobile labor force to aid construction
   projects throughout the USSR.
 Support Soviet build program and political machine
   and found a strong backbone
 Harness demographic dividend and Industrialize State
Komsomol : Extended Surveillance ?

 Komsomol members indoctrinated with communist
    values
 Indoctrinated with communist fervor
 Loyalty to Stalin emphasised
 Under Direct Control of Stalin
Komsomol : Extended Surveillance ?
 Had the duty to expose any
           deviationists and bourgeoisie culture
 Espionage, especially used during De-
           Kulakisation
        Monitoring Sovkhoz and Kolkhoz
        Assisting in Collectivism
Advantages Under Komsomol
 Chance to show their dedication to their
           country.
 An opportunity to make a career within
           the organization and advance to
become a powerful member of the
           Communist Party.
Important Arguments to Consider
 Was the Komsomol used solely for developing the
USSR or extending Stalins Power ?
 Was the Komsomol used differently during Lenin’s
    rule than in Stalins rule?
