Course Title: Media Studies
What will I study in Year 9? Media Studies and the Creative Arts develop
young people’s creative thinking, communication
and evaluation skills. The course combines
research and analysis with practical production
(individual and small group) work. For your initial
production you have a choice of either launching a
new product for men or women, or a magazine ad
featuring a new video game character. You will
later work in a group to create an extract from a
new TV programme, with analytical evaluations of
each production piece, but will begin learning Final
Cut by filming and editing a spoof TV ad!
What skills will I develop? Media students will develop a range of valuable
transferrable skills that they can apply within other
subjects as well as in work and study beyond
school. Work and presentations can be presented
in a variety of ways, from the traditional to
blogging, podcasting and vodcasting. We will work
on your research skills, team-working (and
leadership), research, grasp of ‘media language’,
and specific software, notably Apple’s advanced
video-editing package Final Cut Pro X.
Pathways at IGS: You can follow this course on through to the GCSE
and A-Level Media Studies courses. However, not
taking the course in Year 9 does not prevent you
from taking Media Studies GCSE in Year 10.

Career pathways: If you have ever watched The Apprentice you will
be aware that Media skills are highly valued in
business, not just ‘the media’. Past IGS Media
students have gone on to a wide range of media-
