This document provides instructions for completing basic graphical drawings. It outlines 5 tasks to practice different drawing techniques: 1. Drawing straight lines, lines at 45 degrees and 90 degrees. 2. Constructing a square shape using horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. 3. Drawing a shape made of intersecting squares using horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. 4. Recreating the British Paints logo using different sized concentric circles connected by straight lines. 5. Drawing a toy cannon using circles, horizontal, vertical and 45 degree lines by first laying out the frame and wheels and then adding the barrel and other details.

• Draw a horizontal line 100mm
from your starting point
• Draw a vertical line 100mm from
your starting point

8. Step 3
• Draw a diagonal line at 45 degrees
from the bottom right to the top
left

9. Step 4
• Draw the top and right side of the
square
• Set out the sizes of the shapes
• 10mm, 20mm, 10mm, 20mm,
10mm, 20mm, 10mm

10. Step 5
• Draw a grid
• Erase unwanted lines
• Firm in the shape

12. Task 3
• Recreate this shape based on
constructing squares with
horizontal and vertical lines, with
45 degree angles

up 105mm and across 65mm this will
be your starting point for task 3

14. Step 2
• Draw a 120mm square

15. Step 3
• Divide the square into four quarters
• Divide the square into eighths

16. Step 4
• Cross the diagonals of each square
to find their centres

17. Step 5
• Draw the middle square where the
diagonals touch
• Set out the sizes of the internal
squares 30mm

18. Step 6
• Continue extending lines of each
square to form the three links erase
unwanted lines and firm in shape

20. Circles
• Circumference
• The circumference of a circle is the
distance around it

21. Circles
• Centre line
• Is a real or imaginary line through the
centre of the circle
• Is the starting point for your compass

22. Circles
• Diameter ø
• Is the distance from one side to
another through the centre
• When drawing a circle with a compass
you must set your compass to half the
distance

• Is the distance from the centre to the
circumference
• Your compass must always be set to
the radius

• Draw 20 circles of different sizes
on an A4 piece of paper

a circle with a radius of 6mm

draw a 50mm line horizontally to
the left
• from the end of the line draw a
vertical line 20mm up and 20mm
down

with a radius of 5mm
• Draw vertical lines and connect the
outer tangent of both circles
