This document summarizes a dissertation submitted by Yan Zhu to Florida Institute of Technology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education. The dissertation assessed the environmental literacy of undergraduate students at two national universities in Hubei Province, China. Zhu developed and validated an instrument called the Undergraduate Students Environmental Literacy Instrument to measure eight variables of environmental literacy among 577 students. The study found that students scored highest in willingness to act and environmental worldview, and lowest in perceived skills in citizen participation strategies and environmentally responsible behavior. A hierarchical regression analysis determined that affective dispositions, perceived skills, and perceived knowledge accounted for over 50% of the variance in students' environmentally responsible behavior.

Yan Zhu_Dissertation PPT_An Assessment of Environmental Literacy in ChinaYan Zhu
Yan Zhu recently completed her dissertation research under the guidance of Dr. Tom Marcinkowski at Florida Institute of Technology. As the first broad assessment of environmental literacy among undergraduate students at two national universities in China, she developed and validated the Undergraduate Students Environmental Literacy Instrument (USELI) based on reviews of environmental literacy frameworks and previous assessments outside China, prior work on the NEP scale by Dunlap et al. (2000), results of pilot studies, reliability and factor analyses, and a validity panel review. The USELI can be used in future assessments of EL within Chinese populations, and this will allow comparisons across studies of this kind. Furthermore, findings from this study and from future studies can provide a research base for developing an EL framework in accordance with political, socio-economic, and ecological conditions in China. Subsequent studies for replicating and extending this research are planned in the future with the goal of conducting a national environmental literacy assessment among various populations in China (e.g., K−12 students, university students, teachers, and other adult populations). Improvements also are planned to develop age-appropriate instruments with a wider range of EL variables in future assessments of Chinese citizens.

NEO PI-R AND COLLEGE STUDENTS 2
Abstract
Three research articles were reviewed that investigated the use of the NEO PI-R with
undergraduate college students. The articles concerned three issues concerning the personality
and behavior of students: the differences between students who planned to attend graduate
school and those who did not; the personality variables associated with apathy; and factors
related to college students’ psychological sense of community. The NEO PI-R proved to be a
valuable tool in assessing the attitudes of the undergraduate students in each study.

Correcting Students’ Chemical Misconceptions based on Two Conceptual change s...iosrjce
The purpose of the study was to correct students’ misconceptions using constru ctivism and analogy
as instructional technique and to evaluate the effect on achievement. The participants in the study included 66
SSII Chemistry Students from two intact classes of a chemistry course instructed by the researchers. One class
was randomly assigned as the experimental group, and was instructed with constructivism and analogy
approach; the other class was assigned as control group and was instructed with lecture method. Chemical
Concept Achievement Test (CCAT) was administered to the experimental the two groups as pre -test and post
test to measure the students’ prior knowledge and achievements respectively. The results showed that students
in the experimental group performed better than those in the control group, using the t-test statistic at (P <
0.05). The correlation coefficient (r) of the pretest and post-test of the experimental group was also significant.
It was concluded that teaching by constructivism and analogy was a better way of correcting students’ chemical
misconceptions. Teachers are therefore, advised to adopt this teaching method. Text writers and curriculum
developers are advised to also change their texts and curriculum designs respectively

Radcliff, S. & Wong, E. Librarians Leading the Charge: Collaborating with Faculty to Design Evidenced-Based Instruction. Presented at California Academic and Research Libraries (CARL) 2014 conference.
Librarians at Saint Mary’s College of California will present part two of their study, following their 2012 CARL conference presentation: “English Composition Students: How Are They Using Their Sources?” Having discovered through this research that students do have problems paraphrasing, quoting, integrating and citing their sources, Librarians, in collaboration with English Composition faculty, designed a new study to test out three instructional methods (behaviorist, cognitive and social constructivist) on teaching integration and citing of sources in six sections of advanced English Composition classes. Results of the three methods will be evaluated through pre/post test scores and correlated with a content analysis of the students’ research papers. The results of the content analysis will also be used to compare past studies’ results and presented to English Composition faculty in part three of the librarians’ study. All three methods and the lesson plans will be made available for faculty to use with the knowledge of how effective the methods are in relation to specific student learning outcomes.

TITLE: An Assessment of Environmental Literacy among Undergraduate Students at
Two National Universities in Hubei Province, China
AUTHOR: Yan Zhu
MAJOR ADVISOR: Thomas J. Marcinkowski, Ph. D.
In China, there have been several national environmental surveys and studies
of environmental literacy (EL) variables, but no broader assessment of EL in any
population. This study investigated the status of EL among undergraduate students at
two national universities in Hubei Province, China. Based on reviews of
environmental education literature, as well as frameworks for and assessments of EL,
eight variables were selected for this investigation: environmental worldview (NEP),
environmental sensitivity (ES), willingness to act (WILL), perceived skills in
investigating and evaluating problems and issues (PSPI), perceived skills in using
citizen participation strategies (CPS), perceived knowledge of ecology and earth
system science (PKEE), perceived knowledge of environmental science (PKES), and
environmentally responsible behavior (ERB).
The researcher developed and validated the Undergraduate Students
Environmental Literacy Instrument (USELI) based on Dunlap et al.’s (2000) NEP
scale, results of pilot studies, reliability and factor analyses, and a validity panel
review. The USELI was administered as a pencil-and-paper survey to undergraduate
students majoring in science and non-science fields at these two universities
3. (N = 577). After data preparation and preliminary analyses, descriptive statistics were
calculated for Research Question 1 (N = 464). For Research Questions 2−4,
hierarchical regression was used to determine the effects of Set A (Affective
Dispositions), Set B (Perceived Skills), and Set C (Perceived Knowledge) on ERB
(N = 406).
For the total sample, students’ average scores were: WILL (80%), NEP (77%),
PKEE (67%), PKES (66%), ES (63%), PSPI (51%), ERB (46%), and CPS (45%).
After transforming scale scores into component scores, average component scores
were: affective dispositions (71%), perceived knowledge (67%), perceived skills
(48%), and ERB (46%). For the hierarchical regression analysis, the overall model
containing Sets A, B, and C accounted for 50.8% of the variance in students’ ERB
scores. Null hypotheses regarding the influence of Set A, Set B, and Set C on
students’ ERB scores were rejected. This study contributes a valid and reliable
instrument for use in future studies of this kind. Findings from this study also add to
the research base for developing an EL framework that reflects political,
socio-economic, and ecological conditions in China.
