Tell me in no more than20 words, what is your
FMP idea?
A fictional prog rock/metal band’s career
portfolio of album artwork, representing the
last 50 years.
Why have youdecided to makeit? I had decided to take up the album artwork
over the board game idea I had initially
particularly during the personal study of
Metallica’s St. Anger artwork. The only
amendment to my original thoughts of the
album idea was doing multiple albums and
have them represent a different decade of
the history of prog rock and metal.
What aboutyourproject makesit importantto
you?
Music as a concept is of vital importance for
me, particularly as I’ve been travelling a lot
more over the last 2 years. Aside from the
music itself, I find that album artwork is also
important regarding how artists are
represented, and it also puts across the
connection I need to cross between my
interest of music and my skills in graphic
media.
Outline someof the initial influences onyour
idea/work and somepotential research targets
(remember, research isn’t justa paperbased
activity)
Progressive rock and metal are genres that
have been a recent influence for me. Among
them, Alter Bridge and Rush are amongst the
most useful artwork to research, given they
each have an extensive catalogue of albums
and the artworks leave a lot of implications
and semantics for me to discover.
A bit of background on each band:
- Alter Bridge are an American prog/alt
metal band formed in the early 2000s
and are still active today. The
remaining members of 1990s post-
grunge band Creed (Mark Tremonti,
Scott Phillips, Brian Marshall) brought
Myles Kennedy along originally as a
new vocalist, but soon joined
Tremonti on guitars.
- Rush were a Canadian prog rock band
formed in the late 1960s, retired in
2018. The arrival of Neil Peart
(drummer, lyricist) in 1974, alongside
constants Geddy Lee (bass, keyboards,
vocals) and Alex Lifeson (6 and 12-
stringed guitars) saw the trio explore a
wide variety of lyrics and musical
composition over the next 40 years.

What effect do youwant to haveon your
audience when they see yourproject?
To create artwork that would potentially lead
to an audience to have the intrigue to listen
to their music.
Describe the tone/mood/styleofyourproject
[which productiontechniques/characteristicsare
youemploying?]
Given my idea is going to be multiple pieces
of art based on 5 decades of a musical genre,
there will be a range of colour schemes and
art styles for this project. I can imagine an
album cover from the 1970s containing a lot
more colour than something from the 2000s,
which mostly adhered to a darker ambience
with the hybrid of prog rock and heavy metal.
The 1980s may have a more sketched out art-
style, whilst the 1990s could employ a more
technological computerised style. The 2010s
and 2020s may be a culmination of all of
them.
Why have youdecided to makeyour project in
this style?
The statement may be a bit general, but I’d
like to make each piece of artwork appear
somewhat close to being a real album cover
for each decade, that they wouldn’t look out
of place when looking in a music store in each
decade, up to today.
