2. On 8th December there is the
Feast of the Immaculate
Conception, and on this day we
start decorating our home, houses
and town. It is a time when the
whole family meet and everyone
contributes to decorating.
In Italy Christmas was born as a Christian
festivity that celebrates the birth of Jesus on
December 25th.
On the day before Christmas, also known as
"Christmas Eve", people usually go to mass.
3. The symbol of Christmas in Italy is the Tree decorated with colourful balls and lights.
A star or an angel is placed on the top.
Under the tree there are the gifts brought by Santa Claus.
4. Santa Claus
SantaClausis the idol of all children,as he makes
themhappywith his gifts.Accordingto tradition,with
his reindeer he travels on a sled, coveringthe whole
worldin one night.Numerous lettersare dedicatedto
him.
5. CRIB
This is the miniature
representing the birth of
Jesus. The living crib is also
very popular, a scene
presented in several cities.
The avenues and centers are
also decorated to attract
people.
6. Some Italian
families prepare
the advent
calendar,
consisting of 25
boxes
representing the
days until
Christmas. Inside
we find sweets
and gifts.
7. EPIPHANY
January 6th is the
day of the Epiphany,
to celebrate the visit
of the Three Wise
Men to Jesus.
Traditionally, on
January 6th children
are given presents
by “la Befana”,
an old witch who
fills children's socks
with sweets.
