Restoration and nature reserves
1.
2. The mission of FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) is twofold: on the one hand, it is to promote a
tangible culture of respect for Italy's natural heritage, art, history and traditions; and on the
other, it is to protect a legacy that forms a fundamental part of the roots and identity of Italian
people. FAI is a national, not-for-profit trust that was set up in 1975. Mission:
FAI and its members are daily enganged in the protection and enhancemnet of Italian cultural
and natural heritage, in educational projects, in the supervision and intervention on the
territory.
International:
FAI International is a newly established division of FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano. Its aim is to
broaden FAI’s notoriety beyond national boundaries in order to increase awareness of Italy’s
extraordinary but endangered cultural, artistic and environmental heritage.
Restoration and conservation:
It takes care of the wonderful places that are entrusted to it: It deals with their restoration to
open these places to the public so that everyone can enjoy them.
Environment and landscape observatory:It deals with areas in the countryside that are at risk
and under threat; It responds to appeals from local communities, informs the relevant
institutions of the cases it comes across and intervenes directly wherever possible. Protecting,
restoring, opening to the public and bringing back to life a plethora of Italy's wonderful jewels of
art and nature is a complex and never-ending task.
3. • The School for Mosaic Restoration has been operating since 1984.
• It is managed by the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and
Landscape of Ravenna and has been recognized as Detached Section of
the “High School Opificio delle Pietre Dure” in Florence.
• The School is the testimony of a historical moment, cultured and
refined, which resulted later in a great cultural tradition. This premise has
thus given rise to the creation and increase of methodologies related to
the mosaic technique.
• The activities of the facility covers a very wide range of actions, but
the main one is represented by the action of both environmental
protection and architectural complex on the territory of reference.
• The professional training of students in the various laboratories is
organized in a structured methodological approach through specific
areas.
4. “The Precious Stones “is an autonomous Institute of the Ministry of
Heritage and Culture, whose operating activity and research is carried
out in the field of restoration of works of art.
The Institute is the result of an ancient and illustrious tradition and a
modern and structured activity. Created at the behest of Ferdinand I de
'Medici, as manufacturing furniture for working stones, the Institute is
divided into various areas of restoration and research based on the
constituent materials of the works of art.
Works in different fields:
• Operation, the direct execution of the restoration, in addition to
consulting work, supervision, technical direction of the work;
• The training of conservators through the School of Restoration;
• Research, at a depth of conservative issues related to traditional
materials such as new technologies.
5. Nature reserves in Emilia-Romagna
In Emilia-Romagna there are three large geographic systems: the Adriatic
coast and the delta of the Po, the Po Valley and the hills of the
Apennines.Especially in the lowlands, it is clear the modifying action by the
man. Along the slopes of the high Apennines the natural environment is
well preserved. Here two National Parks were established (the Casentino
Forests, Mount Falterona and Campigna, the most recent of the
Apennines). Widespread presence of protected areas are also along the
coast, now included in the largest Regional Park of the Po Delta. The
protected area is approximately 10% of the entire regional area. Within the
project Natura 2000 network have been proposed 113 SCI (Sites of
Community Importance) and 41 SPAs (Special Protection Areas).

6. Flora:The flora of Emilia-Romagna plays a central role on the national
scene. Of the 7,634 species and subspecies, almost one out of two are
present in the region and make up the Italian vascular flora. Then
there is the presence of endemic, relict species and some unique
peculiarities. Two species of priority value: it is the Primula apennina,
confined in the crevices of rocks.
Fauna: Many protected species are in Emilia-Romagna, there are more
than 200 animal species of Community interest, including 80 birds. In
particular, the birds of the Po Delta represent a treasure of
extraordinary value, with over 300 species recorded in recent
decades, including more than 150 nesting and wintering over 180.
This wealth is the most important area of the Italian Park and one of
the most significant in Europe!
7. • It covers a very important part of the Region Emilia-Romagna.
• From the Po di Goro to the north, it develops including the whole
historical delta of the river Po and the mouths of some Apennine
rivers like the river Reno, river Lamone, Commacchio Valleys, the
"Piallasse" of Ravenna.
• It is also rich in many important monuments: the Abbey of
Pomposa, St. Apollinare in Classe, the "chiaviche" (monumental
water locks), and the historical town centers of Mesola,
Comacchio, Ravenna, and Cervia.
8. The observatory is located in an extremely beautiful area, inside the
Oasis of Protection of Fauna of Montebello. this is a natural oasis
that covers more than 1,200 hectares and has been recognised by
the European Union as being of particular environmental
importance. It offers, to all its visitors, the possibility to discover
the beauties of the Marecchia valley. It is structured in two
sections. The first section is situated on the ground floor and
focuses in particular on flora and fauna. The second section, which
is on the first floor, is dedicated to the geological-geomorphologic
aspects of the valley and the relationship between man and the
territory in which he lives. Outside there is a botanical path which
expands in a circle around the village of Montebello and which
offers the possibility to study easily a few species of plants.
9. is a technical body with special autonomy and specialized in the
restoration and conservation of cultural heritage. The Institute was
founded in 1939, designed by Giulio Carlo Argan and Cesare Brandi.Inside
the Institute there is an active High School to teach restoration. From the
beginning the restoration activities ,conducted by ICR, has been set on
the basis of a systematic scientific research on the phenomena and
causes of the deterioration of works of art, and the art-historical research
on materials and technology, ancient and modern, the purpose of
combining experimentation and tradition. Therefore art historians,
architects, archaeologists, physicists and experts in environmental
controls, chemists, biologists, restorers of different types of artifacts of
historical and artistic interest (wall paintings, on canvas, on wood, textiles
, works of art on paper, metals, ceramic , stones, leather, wood, etc..)
operate within ICR and work together aiming at the implementation of the
restoration and the identification of the best environmental conditions for
the preservation of works of art.
10. • Sasso Simone e Simoncello Park, 4,847 hectares, is situated in the
Provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Rimini.
• The Park is part of the ancient territory of Montefeltro, and it is
about 40 km far from the coast of Romagna. The landscape is
characterized by hilly and mountain areas, such as Sassi Simone
and Simoncello, Monte Canale, with peaks between the 670m above
sea-level.
• The vegetation is made up of woods with a large mixture of
arboreal species. The downy oak, turkey oak are the most
common.
• The Park is home to numerous species of wild animals: the Fox is
the most common carnivore, accompanied by the Badger, the small
and agile Weasel, the beech Marten and the Skunk. The Wild Boar
can be found. Among the smallest mammals are the Squirrel and
the field Mouse. Also the Porcupine, the biggest rodent of Italian
fauna, lives in the Park, as does the Hare.
