For decades humanity has fought an ongoing war between emotional and logical
reasoning. Some tend to trust by nature, and convince themselves to make the
impossible possible, no matter how bleak the situation may seem. However, there is a
point when this optimism turns to lunaty. Others think more rationally, making
cogent discussions over all desire. But are these rational choices more important than
sentiments of the heart? Perhaps the best representation of these differentiating mind
sets is in Virgils The AeneidBook IV and Book II . Queen Didos character represents
heart over head, while Aeneas represents head over heart . I believe that virgil uses
Queen Dido and Aeneas to represent how each of these attitudes can negatively or
positively affect the outcome of a situation, and are ultimately equal.
The first instance we see of Virgil displaying this, is when Aeneas recounts how he
and the rest of the soldiers captured troy. Aeneas has the mind of soldier and a very

The focus of this paper will be to compare and contrast the works of two
playwrights. The works that will be considered are MoliГЁre s The Would Be
Gentleman and Beaumarchais s The Marriage of Figaro. Both considered
comedies, Moliere s is a short play that tells the tale of Monsieur Jourdain, a
tradesman who desires to become a gentleman. Beaumarchais s play, second in the
Figaro trilogy, follows the series of event prior to Figaro s wedding. Figaro and his
companions scheme to ensure that his marriage occurs smoothly. Furthermore, the
plays are dated 100 years apart from each other, and they deal with the
representation of social hierarchy, social mobility, and gender roles in various ways.
With that in mind, they become good sources to compare and contrast the changes in
society that occurred within those 100 years. This paper will compare both plays to
examine how MoliГЁrefurther endorses the social values and ideas of his time, while
Beaumarchais s presents a shift in attitude towards those values and challenges them.
Before delving into the analysis, it is important to establish some context of the
