Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer born in 1603 in Holland. He was married and had a daughter. His first job was as a sailor for the Dutch East India Company. In 1642, he led his first voyage and was the first European to sight New Zealand, which he called Nuew Zeeland. In 1644, his second voyage took him to Australia. Abel Tasman used a horizontal compass skillfully on his voyages and passed away in 1659.
