FAIR TRADE
ON CAMPUS
2010-2011
Education Changes the World
Why Fair Trade?
Fair Trade responds to
major issues for small-
scale farmers:
• Low, fluctuating market prices
for crops
• Middlemen who buy from
farmers at very low prices
• Unfair trade regulations and
subsidies
• Little access to information,
credit or proper technology
• Poor working and
environmental conditions
Education Changes the World
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is similar to a normal supply chain
model of business. There are producers,
importers, processors, retailers and
consumers. The difference is the monitoring
and certification at the core of the system
which guarantees that the supply chain is
built on and functions according to standards
of fairness, transparency and
accountability.

What You Can Do
Education Changes the World
What You Can Do
There are plenty of ways to be a part of Uniterra’s Fair
Trade campaign:
• Participate in our Halloween Reverse
Trick-Or-Treating campaign
• Hold a Fair Trade sale on Campus:
Contact us to receive certified Delapointe
shea butter products from Burkina Faso,
Ten Thousand Villages products or Nelligan
coffee from Latin America!
• Advocate for an Ethical Purchasing
Policy on your campus, and for Fair Trade
awareness in general
Education Changes the World
Reverse Trick-Or-Treating
• Last year, Local Committees
distributed 18,000 free Cocoa
Camino chocolates and information
cards to households across
Canada through the Reverse Trick-
or-Treat campaign.
• Help to raise awareness about
ethical consumption and promote
Fair Trade options during the
Halloween season.
Education Changes the World
Top Story:
Halloween at Brandon University
• Last year, 16 Brandon University LC members went door to door
as part of WUSC’s Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign in
conjunction with the annual food drive put on by the Brandon
University Food Bank
• Pre-Halloween, they went door-to-door dropping off notices in
mailboxes , asking homeowners to have food items ready to
donate, and alerting them to the ‘big kids’ coming by on
Halloween.
• In addition to collecting food items, they handed out Fair Trade
chocolate and Fair Trade informational brochures.
• Dressed in full (and hilarious) costumes, the LC members were
extremely well received. They collected over 1,100 lbs of food, all
the while raising awareness about Fair Trade.

Good For You, Good For Them

• Shea butter is a natural African
treasure. Help us make it better
known all across Canada!
• Contribute to better conditions of
living for thousand of African rural
women and their families in Burkina
Faso!
• Last year, 9 universities participated
in the “Good for You, Good for Them”
campaign.

on campus.
Education Changes the World
Campaign for an Ethical Purchasing
Policy on Campus
• Form a coalition
• Research how purchasing
decisions are made on your
campus
• Develop an action plan
• Lobby your institution’s
administration and food
services to establish and
implement an Ethical
Purchasing Policy on campus
Education Changes the World
Top Story: Lobbying at UTSC
• The University of Toronto Scarborough
Local Committee has been running a
Fair Trade campaign on campus since
2004-05.
• The campaign succeeded in getting
most vendors to make the switch to Fair
Trade, including the campus Starbucks,
Aramark café, Treats and Bluffs
Restaurant.
• The committee is now lobbying for a
Fair Trade purchasing policy in the
Student Centre

WUSC Fair trade 2010 EN

  • 2. Education Changes the World Why Fair Trade? Fair Trade responds to major issues for small- scale farmers: • Low, fluctuating market prices for crops • Middlemen who buy from farmers at very low prices • Unfair trade regulations and subsidies • Little access to information, credit or proper technology • Poor working and environmental conditions
  • 3. Education Changes the World What is Fair Trade? Fair Trade is similar to a normal supply chain model of business. There are producers, importers, processors, retailers and consumers. The difference is the monitoring and certification at the core of the system which guarantees that the supply chain is built on and functions according to standards of fairness, transparency and accountability. Transfair Canada
  • 4. Education Changes the World The Fair Trade movement • Nationally recognized symbol and widely purchased FT products in Canada: • Coffee 1995: sales have grown to 5 million kg/yr • Cocoa sales • 40+ chocolate companies

  • 17. Education Changes the World Top Story: Halloween at Brandon University • Last year, 16 Brandon University LC members went door to door as part of WUSC’s Reverse Trick-or-Treating campaign in conjunction with the annual food drive put on by the Brandon University Food Bank • Pre-Halloween, they went door-to-door dropping off notices in mailboxes , asking homeowners to have food items ready to donate, and alerting them to the ‘big kids’ coming by on Halloween. • In addition to collecting food items, they handed out Fair Trade chocolate and Fair Trade informational brochures. • Dressed in full (and hilarious) costumes, the LC members were extremely well received. They collected over 1,100 lbs of food, all the while raising awareness about Fair Trade.
