This is my final project for the course "Trading for Development in the Age of Global Value Chains - WDR 2020" on which I have reflected some lessons learned regarding the importance of GVCs. My main aim at this project is to show how agricultural value chains have positive welfare effects referring to the Community Trade Programme of The Body Shop.

I. Executive Summary
With the rise of the ketogenic diet and low carb diets, many people have begun to cut wheat and carbohydrates out of their diets in hopes to become healthier and lose weight. However, most products in the snack industry contain wheat leaving them exposed to shifts in demand. With the rise of Non-GMO, gluten-free, organic, and nutrient enhanced foods, snack producers are forced to focus making products healthier in response to consumer demand.
With a rise in economy, many households are left with more disposable income. This allows consumers the desire to trade up to more expensive products; organic, non-GMO, superfoods. This helps support industry performance. With an expected rise in per capita disposable income in 2020, a potential opportunity is opened for the industry.
Having an estimated 24.7% of the industry revenue in 2019 from Mondelez International, Kellogg, Campbell, and Barilla, small to medium sized companies still account for a significant portion of the industry accounting for 54.7% of the market.
One snack dominating the industry right now is edible nuts. They contain high-quality fiber, minerals, vegetable protein, oils, and vitamins, all vital for healthy functioning of the human body. According to the March 2020 USDA report, Vietnam is ranked number one in exporting tree nuts.
Organicsan, a US- based company founded by a management team with over 20 years of international operation and trading experience, was created in response to the emerging “health-nut” population. With an aim towards healthier lifestyles with gluten-free and organic snacks and nuts, they have managed to take over Vietnam’s position as the leading nut exporter.
Since early 2020, the founders of Organicsan have collaborated with a local organic farmer and its processing plant in Vietnam for cashews and macadamia nuts. In 2021, we plan to set up our first business office in Texas in hopes to partner with companies such as Amazon and Shopify to promote our organic products. We hope to one day sign contracts to wholesalers main distribution channels with large retailers. Organicsan plans to expand through localizing manufacturing operations to minimize costs while focusing on higher productivity by 2023.
Our objective is to obtain a $250,000 loan to enable us to begin operations with projected first-year revenue of US$2 million dollars, and then subsequently obtain a first-round investment amount in the amount of US$1 million in 2023 to fund capital expenditure and workin ...
For 2012 the UN focuses on cooperatives “because cooperative enterprises contribute to reducing poverty for many families and communities”.
Members of cooperatives undertake voluntarily to get associated and better pool their individual resources. This social and participatory model stands for values that perfectly suit the fair trade values: payment of a fair price and obtaining fair incomes.
It gives information about the social enterprise and social entrepreneurs in the Philippines, their achievements towards building a better Filipino society.

Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

2. HOW HAS THE BODY SHOP CREATED A
GREAT VALUE-ADDING AGRIGULTURAL
VALUE CHAIN?
https://www.thebodyshop.com/en-gb/about-us/our-story/a/a00002
3. Overview and Some Points That I Have Learned From The
Course
All over the world, especially in regions with environmental and socio-
economic challenges, people still don’t have access to decent living and
working conditions as well as fair trading practices.
The Body Shop has helped smallholder farmers in disadvantaged
groups, cooperatives with increasing their living standards and
welfare.
4. Overview and Some Points That I Have Learned From The
Course
Through its Community Trade Programme, The Body Shop has integrated
local suppliers, producers and cooperatives as value adding elements in its
high quality products selling fast around the world into the agricultural
GVC it created.
Thanks to the GVC it created, The Body Shop has not only accessed to natural
and high quality raw materials and intermediate products, it has also made a
huge contribution to enhanced living standards of vulnerable groups and
people.
This agricultural value chain has had positive welfare effects on mostly
women-led cooperatives (suppliers and producers).
5. Overview and Some Points That I Have Learned From The
Course
The agricultural GVC The Body Shop created has helped the vulnerable
people, most of which are women, to get employment, better social
status and financial independence as well as healthier and more
sanitized living standards.
The Body Shop has encouraged the development of local traditional
production techniques through education supported with direct
investments or external investments (HYPERSPECIALIZATION).
This agricultural value chain has also encouraged environmental
protection through reduced waste and minimised environmental
harm.
6. Some of the Basic Ethical Values of The Body Shop
A fair price is established in consultation with producers and suppliers.
Community projects are supported through price premiums or direct
investments.
Producer groups receive favourable terms of trade. One of which is
early payment if needed.
Supplier support/training is provided through direct support from The
Body Shop or through external stakeholders such as local NGOs.

7. What is the «Community Trade Programme»?
This program helps local suppliers gain market access and invest in
social and environmental projects that benefit their communities.
Producer support and access to an international market are keys
for this programme. One-to-one relationships with local producers and
suppliers together with their families and comunities are made to
develop long-term trade partnerships with local suppliers.

8. What is the «Community Trade Programme»?
Local suppliers have been paid fair prices and offered favourable
trade terms.
Some suppliers have received an additional fund to invest in
community projects such as education, healthcare and sanitation.
This programme has helped The Body Shop to get direct access
to high-quality ingredients and accessories from around the
world.
