Welcome to the student teaching application
process and congratulations on nearing
an important milestone in your preparation
to join the teaching profession. Student teaching
is considered the culminating experience in your
pre-service teacher education, one that is meant to
provide you with an invaluable opportunity to apply
all that you have learned so far in a real life context
with the ongoing support and feedback of an expert,
mentor teacher.
In addition to fulfilling a condition of teacher
certification, student teaching serves an important role
in the preparation of new teachers especially in helping
them to link the theory and research learned in their
coursework to the planning, teaching, and assessment
of their lessons. Teacher candidates often struggle to
understand and develop skills for applying newly
learned information.

The Student Teaching Application as well as the
School District Request Form can be found on the
following webpage:

All necessary forms are available on the site.
For additional questions about what is necessary
to apply please contact the Office of Field

Student teaching deadlines are as follows:
Fall Semester:
Student teaching Applications are due by
December 1st
of the previous year.
Winter Semester:
Student Teaching Applications are due by
April 1st
of the previous year.

2. Student Teaching Part I: Eligibility
To be eligible to student teach you must meet all the
requirements on the following checklist:
 You have completed all other program course
requirements. (University Core/Gen Ed as well
as professional sequence)
 You have no INCOMPLETE grades on your WSU
academic transcript.
 In order to be able to student teach your overall
GPA must be at or above 2.5.
 You have completed your MTTC exam in your
subject area. (For elementary education students
this means you must have passed your elementary
exam. If you are trying to student teach in middle
school you must have passed both the elementary
exam as well as the major exam.)
 You have submitted your completed student
teaching application to the office in a timely
manner.
 Late applications MAY be process at the discretion
of the Office of Field Experiences, but there is no
guarantee that a placement will be available.
 You have a current TB test. (These tests are
valid for three years and must be valid during
the duration of your student teaching.)
Please note: A comprehensive audit of each student’s
record is conducted, confirming whether each student
has met all criteria listed about. Submission of an
application and/or registration for Student Teaching and/
or notification of a placement should not be interpreted
as final approval for Student Teaching. All students will be
notified via email when they have received final approval.
Student Teaching Part II:
Placement
In the context of student teaching, while a variety of
issues influence the school and teacher assignment
process, we cannot guarantee any individual student
teacher placement. Schools and districts play an
active role in the determining of which students are
assigned to which schools. Based on your input and
the College priorities, the Assistant Director of the
Office of Field Experiences makes a formal request to
the individual school districts.
Please note: You may not contact schools on
your own initiative, you must follow the application
procedures established between the College of
Education and the surrounding districts. Also,
you cannot student teach where you have complete
pre-student teaching or student teach in a school
where a relative is employed by that district.
Half-Day Student Teaching
Placements are for:
 Special Education majors completing their
regular elementary placement prior to the full
day special education assignment. This also
applies to Speech Pathology students.
 Early Childhood Education students
completing their half-day assignment at
the Early Childhood Center.
 Art Education students completing their
first phase of student teaching.
 Physical Education students who are
completing their second phase of student
teaching.
Step III: Completing the Student
Teaching Application
To ensure that the College and districts and schools have
all the information necessary to make the best possible
decisions about your student teaching placement and that
the process goes as smoothly and quickly as possible, make
sure your application is complete and accurate and present
you and your experiences in a most favorable “light.”
The following guidelines should help you in this effort.
Steps for a Successful
Student Teaching Application
 Consider the criteria (described in the school
district request form), as well as your own interests,
professional needs, career goals, and available
transportation in stating your preferences for your
student teaching placement.
 Respond to all items on the application. If you
are not sure of the proper answer to any item on
this application please contact Ms. Lori Lucas for
clarification.
 Please be sure to complete the name of the
professional courses as well as major and minor.
(e.g. Becoming an Urban Educator not TED 2250)
 Please be sure to complete the section as it
relates to your personal interests and description.
This section highlights your professional interests,
experiences, and preparation.
 You must formally submit the application before
we can take any action on your behalf. Please
check the three boxes (yes or no) and sign the
student teaching application.
To ensure timely and appropriate placements, students
should regularly check their WSU e-mail and quickly
respond to any requests from the Office of Field
