Topic: Teacher Education Curriculum
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, English majors are expected to:
o Describe the teacher education curriculum;
o Identify the requisites and specifications of the BSEd and BEEd programs; and
o Express sensitivity to the essence of the teaching profession.
II. INTRODUCTION
In the discussion of Ms. Ariola about Implementing the Curriculum, we have learned that
there are a number of stakeholders which serve as movers of the curriculum. On that note, we
know that the teacher has a big role in making the curriculum be felt by the ones it primarily
serves- students. Thus, the teacher is the closest person to the clients of the curriculum. I think
this is why the profession has been “travelled” by many potential teachers. This morning, I will
be discussing the curriculum that we are currently travelling—Teacher Education Curriculum.
III. DISCUSSION
The Teacher Education Curriculum is a curriculum that operates among Higher Education
Institutions (HEIs) and State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) intended for pre-service teacher
education. It consists of two undergraduate degree programs namely Bachelor of Elementary
Education (BEEd) and Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd).
Program Description and General Objectives
Program Description General Objectives
Bachelor of Elementary
Education
The BEEd is structured to
meet the needs of
professional teachers for
academic schools and special
education programs in the
Philippines
BEEd aims to develop
elementary school teachers
who are either:
a.) generalists who can teach
across the different learning
areas in grade school.
b.) special education
teachers; and
c.) pre-school teachers
Bachelor of Secondary
Education
The BSEd is structured to
meet the needs of
professional teachers for
secondary schools in the
Philippines.
BEEd aims to develop high
school teachers who can
teach one of the different
learning areas in high school
like Mathematics, Physical
Sciences, Biological Sciences,
English, Filipino, and others.
Allied Programs
Teacher Education is an applied discipline which draws from many basic disciplines:
o Social Sciences (Psychology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, History, etc.)
o Science and Technology Fields (Information Technology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Mathematics, etc.)
o Humanities and related fields (Languages, Literature, Philosophy, Journalism, etc.)
Curriculum Description (taken from CMO No.30 s.2004)

o Values Education
o TLE
o MAPEH
o Islamic Studies
Effectivity
These curricula for teacher education curriculum commenced first semester of the
school year 2005-2006 and took effect in the years as follow:
IV. SYNTHESIS
The teacher education curriculum is designed to develop students with competence and
empower them with knowledge, skills, values, and attitude towards their readiness in the
teaching profession. The curriculum is not just a reflection of the kind of teachers the country
envisions to have but also the kind of students they want these teachers to produce.
V. REFLECTION
We are still travelling the path of the teaching profession, and we are already near our
destination, whatever they may be. Regardless of the kind of vehicles we have ridden
throughout this journey, remember that in our destination there are still a bunch of vehicles
waiting and the things we learn in our past rides are important. Like travelling, we should not
stop sharing everything what we have learn. That is the drive of teaching.
