Abstract 2 Naphthol has been selectively oxidized to 2 hydroxy 1,4 naphthoquinone (HNQ,
Lawsone) with hydrogen peroxide in presence of
5, 10, 15, 20 tetrakis (p sulfonatophenyl)porphinatomanganese (III) chloride as catalyst in alkaline
aqueous solution. The catalytic oxidation afforded
2 hydroxy 1,4 naphthoquinone in high yield (95 %). The effect of reaction parameters on the
catalytic activity and the yield of HNQ have been investigated. UV vis spectral analysis during
oxidation reaction indicated that oxomanganese intermediate O=Mn(IV)TPPSCl was the active
species in the oxidation reaction.
Keywords: Selective catalytic oxidation; 2 Naphthol; Metalloporphyrins; 2 Hydroxy 1,4
naphthoquinone, Hydrogen peroxide.

Luminol Forensics Lab Report
Reflecting on the Impacts of Science, Specifically Forensics: Luminol Luminol (C8H7N3O2) is a
very effective and convenient chemical used in crime scene investigations. The presence of blood
can be found with luminol sprayed throughout a crime scene. The chemical reaction between
luminol and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) the oxidizing agent, catalyzed by the iron in blood, reveals
this presence. When investigating a crime scene, investigators use luminol joined by other
chemicals; such as hydrogen peroxide, to search for blood evident. In order for the luminol to react
with the hydrogen peroxide in a glowing manner, a catalyst is needed. In this case, the substance
that increases the rate of the chemical reaction; the catalyst, is the iron in blood. The iron atoms are
found in the haemoglobin within blood. The reaction produces a cyclic peroxide and releases
energy, essentially causing the blue, chemiluminescent lightvisible when observing under a
blacklight. This reaction was developed so that crime investigators and scientists present at a crime
scene can view blood that may not be visible to the naked eye. The forensic industry is greatly
impacted by this reaction because it has provided essential evidence and information needed to...

A chemical reaction involving luminol can result in chemiluminescence when coming in contact
with other substances other than blood. It can react with copper, horseradish sauce, fecal matter,
and certain types of bleaches. This can be difficult for forensic scientists because bleach solution is
often used to thoroughly clean crime scenes by criminals prior to investigation. This is a problem
because when luminol and an oxidant is sprayed throughout the crime scene, a chemiluminescence
glows throughout the whole area, disguising any areas that may have had blood prior to the
thorough clean

Essay about Eric Hoover s Honor for Honor s Sake
Eric Hoover s Honor for Honor s Sake
The idea of being judged by your peers has long been accepted as the best way of regulating a
population. Even the Constitution uses a peer based judicial system when laying down the
framework for the United States government. There are, however, some limits to when and where
this system can be effectively implemented. Eric Hoover challenges the use of peer review in
universities by telling the testimonials of several students who have been hurt by a system that has
overstepped their bounds. The majority of the arguments made by Hoover in Honor for Honor s
Sake are pathos based arguments but they are closely entwined with fact. It is this combination of
both logos and pathos that creates a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the students accused quit the university before the trial; others were prosecuted and found
guilty. There were some insanity pleas that caused those trials to run longer, and untimely allowed
the students to go without punishment. The students that were accused were not the only people
that suffered because of the charges. The honor committee that was trying the cases had to juggle
both an academic schedule and run a ridiculous amount of trials at the same time. Hoover points to
different mass accusation that occurred at another university with an honor code. The only
difference is that at the other school there were other options than just expulsion. The ability to
have a lesser charge made some of the cases easier to prosecute, however there was still trouble
prosecuting the large number of cases. Hoover s use of testimonials convinces the reader on an
emotional level.
When ideals that are commonly held as true are put into question, it creates an emotion that can be
used as a pathos argument. Hoover uses this technique to show how the honor code at some
universities goes against commonly held ideals. Hoover says, Some students have charged that the
honor system is racially biased and excessively harsh. And lawyers have argued that accused
students have no guarantee of due process in the secret trials, run by students who, though they may
not even be old enough to drink, have the power to

According to the speculations of linguistic expert, John McWhorter, who wrote the article, What
the World Will Speak in 2115, in one hundred years English will become the most widely
understood language. If current trends continue, in the future one can imagine a world in which
humans all share a single universal language. Having a common language would potentially open
the doors to many opportunities for increased economic activity and cultural interaction.
Additionally, as we travel into the 22nd Century, lesser used and more complex languages that are
spoken today will become extinct. Subsequently, the few languages that survive will evolve into ...

According to his work, English is the fastest spreading language in human history and is used by
an estimated 1.27 billion people globally (Neeley, 2012). The English language is already the
most popular language in the world, accompanied by each person s native language. Also,
compared to other languages English is relatively easy to learn (McWhorter, 2015). This does not
mean that the meshing of new versions of English are always pristine. Ana Lucia Gonzalez,
reporter for BBC, wrote the article, Life in Spanglish for California s Young Latinos to address this
issue of blending language.
However, it may come as a surprise that English would be the one to dominate, given that
Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the largest population in the world. It is very unlikely for
Mandarin to replace English because English is the already the official language in commerce
around the world and it is also the language in which organizations such as Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC) communicate (Martinez, 2014). A reason that McWhorter provided to why
Mandarin Chinese will not be used as a global language, is because it is very difficult to master the
language if not introduced to it at a young age. Furthermore, English is much more user friendly
and functional

The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior
Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can
consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form communities there are conflicts that have
and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial
behavior. These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction
with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait themselves yields unexpected, but welcome
behavior. Morality, human s conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and
encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and
altruismthat improve human interactions. Generally speaking, actions that benefit the community
will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans.
While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies,
Boehm focuses a significant amount on these suppression techniques. The suppression of such bad
behavior allows coherency in the group.
This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by
societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals and some of the genetic forces that drive
evolution.
An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable
to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to disrupt the balance and order of

According to Jews in Israel the biggest long term problem that their country is facing is that they
were more likely to cite economic concerns (such as Israel s high cost of living, or a shortage of
affordable housing in Tel Aviv and other cities) as they were to mention military or national
security issues (such as terror attacks or Iran s nuclear program). This belief that Israel s biggest
problem is the economy is a belief between Jews in Israel, however American Jews have a
completely different perspective into Israel s long term problem. When American Jews were
asked what the long term problem, fully two thirds cited a military or security issue, and hardly
any (1%) mentioned economic difficulties. What this shows is a separation in how American
Jews and Israeli Jews view the government, or American Jews do not know the struggle that the
Jews are facing in Israel. Another problem that American and Israel Jews disagree on is the range
of political issues concerning the State of Israel and the peace process. While Israeli Jews are
skeptical that Israel and an independent Palestinian state can peacefully coexist, most American
Jews are optimistic that a two state solution is possible. These two different perspectives is
something that is eroding and segregating the Jewish people, it is two different societies that each

However, this rejection that these characters have also seems to be a symbol of male anxiety. The
characters always seem to be dispatched by their male equivalents. Looking at Heat again, when
Neil Mc Cauley is dying, he reaches out gesturing to hold Vincent s hand, squeezing it tightly. This
scene cries out as a testimony to Michael Mann s recurring interest in the relationship between the
professional opposites which almost always seems to result in a metaphysical displacement that is
strangely elevating.
In Thief (1981) which was Mann s feature film debut, laid out a thematic blueprint that his later
work would follow. Frank s character played by James Caan strives to create a family with Jessie

The double is the battle between the protagonist and the antagonist in Mann s film. The double
always seems to be men with opposite professions. But still professions that take place or follow
those that are in the urban night. In Collateral Vincent (Tom Cruise) is a hitman whilst Max
(Jamie Foxx) is a taxi driver. In Heat Neil Mc Cauley is a criminal whilst Vincent (Al Pacino) is
a cop. The expressionistic use of urban architecture in Mann s films (concreate, glass, steel)
highlights the estrangement that postmodernism creates between people. This mirror image theme
is most visible in the Manhunter . Will Graham (William Petersen), chases after the notorious
tooth fairy serial killer because he is able to place himself in the same mind set as the killer in
order to catch him. His psychological instincts and suppressed self, contain an inner self that is
unnatural and vexatious. This theme of mirror images is also present in Collateral . When Max is
forced to confront his boss about being exploited about, we see the contempt that Vincent has for
authority and power in general. Max wants to get rid of Vincent because he is a constant reminder
of his failure to take appropriate action in his life. Max is totally at the mercy of the social forces
and unable to negotiate which unlike Vincent who is a hitman has a detachment from this
empowerment that he has constructed through identifying his male

Li, S., Blatchley, B., College, A.S. (2014). Examining the Effect of Peppermint on Cognitive
Functioning. Psi Chi, The International Honor Society In Psychology, 19 (3), 88 97.
This study speaks about whether or not an alerting odor, such as peppermint, can affect attention
and working memory. Research has been completed previously on the influences of odorants on
cognitive functioning, physiology, behavior, and mood. From earlier research, it was resulted that
a person s atmosphere was affected in either a positive or negative way; depending on the type of
smell they inhaled. If a participant smelled an unpleasant smell, it was determined that the person
would have a negative change in their mood; when the participant would inhale a positive smell,
their mood would change positively.
The study consisted of fifty, female, undergraduate college students. The ethnicities that were use
for this study were African American, European, Asian, Hispanic, biracial, and a very slight
percentage was categorized as other. The experiment would begin at 5:00pm everyday, for four
weeks. One of the three groups was administered each day. The three groups were either
peppermint, expectation, or control. Each participant was seated down, given an instruction sheet,
a laptop, and was not able to see the other participants from their view. The participants were told
to put a facemask on and leave it on until they were told

Empire Builders Essay
What are some of the disadvantages, problems or difficulties experienced by Empire builders?

Empires with their self prophesied title, innately express the notion of expansion! Builders of
empires through the ages have consistently shown the somewhat insatiable need to expand! It is
this notion of expansion or more specifically the necessity for it (Leroy Beaulieu, 1891), that seems
a continual challenge for empire builders to control and therefore sustain. As an empire expands the
ability to sustain, regulate and control its realm, provides continual challenges for local economies.

fiercely resisted out side regulation (Darwin, 2009) leaving them to reign for the most part,

able to gain great wealth and power through monopolisation of commodities and industry.
Unfortunately because of the autonomy allowed to the elites (also enhanced by ideals of race
supremacy and hierarchal traditions), they became entrenched in ideology and bureaucracy
escaping the critique that was necessary for accountability and appropriate regulation. The
economic hub became a great arena where private savings were mobilised for investment

The Need to Support and Assist Employees
Throughout our career, we have been taught to check our personal problems at the door prior to
starting our work shift. In other words, personal problems are exactly what it is, personal , and
have no place in a work environment. In today s new economy, organizations are realizing the
importance of providing assistance to employees dealing with major personal problems. At
times, when an employee is having a personal problem at home, it can after their work
performance and can potentially disrupt the work flow of the organization. Industrial and labor
relations experts talk of a changing labor force and the need for employers to develop new
polices in response to the changing needs of their employees, if they wish to remain competitive
in an increasingly world economy (Kamerman Kahn, 1987, p. 2). I personally believe that
employers should provide assistance and be supportive of their employees. Unfortunately many
of us in the work force are presented with personal problems that are unforeseen. Organizations
need to be open minded in regards to these isolated issues and provide support during the
employee s difficult time. Emotions play a critical role in the success of every organization, yet
many people in key decision making positions, leaders with outstanding technical skills, fail to
understand the role emotions play in a work setting (Reece, Brandt, Howie, 2011, p. 190). My

Sound Of Music Essay
The Sound of Music
Can you imagine that it has been 50 years since the classic and heartwarming movie The Sound
of Music was released? It is most meaningful for me because when the movie came out in movie
theaters on March 2, 1965 I was 8 years old and my dad took me to see this movie. Two years
later the movie was again in theaters, I have just forgotten what holiday time it was released for,
and this time I went with my mom and my dad had passed away. Here are some interesting and
perhaps unknown facts about The Sound of Music .
Rights to the movie
The real Maria Von Trappwrote her book about her life The Story of the Trapp Family Singers
and it was published in 1949. The Trapp Family ran into monetary problems in 1955 and Maria
sold the rights to German movie producer Wolfgang Reinhardt for a mere $9,000. However we
must consider the fact that in those days this amount of money was worth a whole lot more than
it would be in today s terms. What I do find amazing is that Maria and the Von Trapp family never
got any royalties from the two German movies that were released based on their life nor did they
receive anything from the Broadway production of The Sound of Music which ran for over three
years or from the movie, which brought in about $300 million. Now surely they should have

The Broadway version at the Lundt Fontaine Theater in New York City starred Mary Martin and
Theodore Bikel. Since this musical proved to be a big hit 20th Century Fox bought the movie
rights for $1.25 million. The reason that the movie was almost not made was that the making of
the movie Cleopatra put such a drain on studio reserves that for some time Fox shut down. When
Richard Zanuck took over the production of Fox studios this film was once again put up for
consideration. It would have been such a shame if it had never seen the light of day.

19th Century Transcendentalism
During the 19th and 20th century, the arts played a major role in helping society move toward
social and political changes. Most of the writers, and other influential people during this time used
the arts to emphasis the importance of the current problems that needed dire change. This included
literature used by the transcendentalists, slavery abolitionists, and even in the Harlem Renaissance
and more.
During the early 19th century transcendentalists writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry
David Thoreau questioned the doctrines of established churches and the business practices of the
merchant class. Most of what the transcendentalists were writing about included the need for social
changes. Ralph Waldo Emerson, one of the best known... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Books written about slavery and its cruelty brought more concern to people regarding the real
issue with slavery. The most influential book of its day was a novel about the conflict between
an enslaved man named Tom and the brutal white slave owner Simon Legree. The publication of
Uncle Tom s Cabin in 1852, by the northern writer Harriet Beecher Stowe moved a generation of
Northerners as well as many Europeans to regard slave owners as monstrously cruel and
inhuman. However, in response Southerners, condemned these truths and claimed it was just
proof of the prejudice northerners had against the southern way of life. In addition, Hinton R.
Helper s book of nonfiction, Impending Crisis of the South, attacked slavery at another angle.
The author used statistics to demonstrate to fellow Southerners that slavery weakened the South
s economy. In response many southern states moved to ban the book but it had already been in
wide distribution. In addition, to counter the attack that slavery was evil, pro slavery southern
whites argued that slavery was just the opposite, a positive good for slaves and masters alike.
They argued that slavery was sanctioned by the Bible and was firmly grounded in philosophy and
history. Southern writers also contrasted the conditions of Northern wage workers as wage slaves
forced to work long hours in factories and mines with the familial bond that could develop on
plantations between slaves and masters. One of the southern authors George Fitzhugh questioned
the principal of equal rights for unequal men and attacked the capitalist wage system as worse than
slavery. Both the laws passed such as the fugitive slave law and the antislavery and proslavery
literature, polarized the nation even more. Northerners who had earlier scorned abolition became

The sun differs from the Daily Telegraph in content greatly. The Sun only has a short paragraph of
background information whereas The Daily Telegraph has quite a large section describing Atkinson
s tributes and achievements in football. Also The Sun has much shorter quotes in its article. This is
because The Sun is known to get straight to the point in articles whilst The Daily Telegraph usually
gives all sides of the argument before coming to a conclusion.
The Sun is part of the News Corporation Group owned by press baron Rupert Murdoch and is the
best selling British newspaper selling 3.5 million copies a day, compared to The Daily Telegraph
who is part of Hollinger Inc. owned by Conrad Black. In comparison to The Sun it sells over three

Questioning The Memoirs Of A Geisha
The word stereotype is today almost always a term of abuse. This stems from the wholly justified
objections of various groups in recent years, blacks, women and gays, in particular to the ways in
which they find themselves stereotyped in the mass media and in everyday speech. (Dyer, 1993) It
has been ages that Americans media have defined the Asian images to around the whole world.
Many of them that shaped that image usually have little or no understanding of the asian culture, its
people and its countries, hence the stereotype. Traditionally, the mass media in Hollywood does not
have a positive portrayer of the minority community, much less the Asians. It may due to the
inevitable fact of the consequences of globalisation and immigration, that it may seems as though
they have stolen away opportunities and the locals have to thus compete and also share their native
country as well as resources. In the postmodern world we become increasingly aware that the
objects about which we speak are not so much in the world as they are products of
perspective.(Gergen,1991) Questioning... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Examples Of Stereotyping In The Workplace
A stereotype is a way to determine where a person or thing falls in the realm of life. Stereotyping
is a natural part of life and it actually does have a meaning in reality. It allows a person s mind to
work properly and for the human brain to be able to recognize, process, store and then recall the
information when needed. It can also be used in racial, political, and religious ways and many
more ways. Stereotyping in a racial way is judging people by the color of their skin, where they
come from, or the language they speak. It can be both good and bad to stereotype, it just depends on
how it is being said. Stereotyping in a religious way is judging people by what they believe in.

It causes low morale for a single person who is doing it or a group of people. A general problem a
workplace can encounter is stereotyping other people and it can give bad publicity and a bad
reputation for the workplace. It is illegal to discriminate against people and the consequences are
very crucial. If the workplace requires teamwork it is a very bad thing to stereotype and the
company will not be as successful. A company wants good working relationships with its
employees, not bad working relationships. When one person is judging another, they no longer
have the need to get to know each other and think of themselves as if they are better than the other.
Communication is key for two individuals and groups and an essential part for the workplace. It is
important to be open minded of other people and judge people on first impressions instead of not

Essay about Elites And The Masses
Elites and the Masses
There are many theories pertaining to the nature of power in society. In modern society, it is
important to identify where and when power is exercised, who benefits and who suffers from it
being exerted upon them. In this tradition, it is useful to examine the managerialist perspective.
Managerialism focuses on organizations as the basis, or unit of analysis of society, to which all
other aspects of society are subordinate to. These organizations use their resources in an attempt to
dominate each other and society. Managerialism tells us that power is concentrated among a group
of elites who control organizations, and use them as an instrument to gain more power and expand

The increased use of assembly lines in production is a prime example of depersonalization within
bureaucracy.
Weber identifies several different types of authority. One is traditional legitimacy, which states that
authority is bestowed upon someone based on traditional roles of authority, such as the pope or
even the parents of children. Charismatic authority tells us that some are granted legitimacy to have
authority over our lives by sheer charisma, such as Martin Luther King jr., Adolf Hitler and Gandhi.
The third type of authority is rational legal authority. This states that we grant legitimacy based
upon the office they serve. An example of this is the inherent authority of Jesse Ventura over the
people of Minnesota, simply because he holds the title of governor.
In the managerial perspective, the economy is seen as a process of three different factors:
industrialization, elite competition and bureaucratic rationalization.
Industrialization is characterized by the increased role of technology as an integral factor of
production. As industrialization and science further blend together, the economy becomes
increasingly large and complex, making bureaucratic organizations more and more of a necessary
function to the advancement of

Personality Assessment of Jackie Robinson Essay
Personality Assessment of Jackie Robinson
Every individual in our society is different; each person is known or described differently from one
another. The Big Five Factors: neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness,
and conscientiousness, are thought to describe and outline personality in all cultures and language
families. They characterize the differences in humankind and can be used to predict or explain job
performance. Jackie Robinson was a man who I would describe as having a strong and persevering
personality. He grew up at a time when racial tensions were at their worst, and yet, managed to
succeed and follow through with everything he faced. At times he was forced to suck it up, although

almost all of his actions. Over time, he had learned how to exercise self control to answer insults,
violence, and injustice with silence and had learned how to earn the respect of (his) teammates
(81). Jackie Robinson s score for extraversion was a 78, meaning that although he was extraverted,
at times he demonstrated some introverted traits. Although he was a friendly individual, Robinson,
in many situations, was forced to keep to himself. In addition, he liked to take it easy whenever
possible, gearing up for whatever was to come his way. He also, however, had some extraverted
traits, including the fact that from the time he started school, he was always active, whether it be in
sports, or working with the First African AmericanBank or the NAACP. He was a true leader with
the First African American Bank and the NAACP, speaking in front of many people, and being
aggressive enough to accomplish what was needed. Robinson constantly demonstrated attempts to
be gregarious and to be recognized by others. Although he remembers standing alone at first base
the only black man on the field, he fought hard to become just another guy . Jackie Robinson never
quit because things went the wrong way. If anything, hardships forced him to work harder at
succeeding. When he went on into the business world, he always strove to learn as much

Web1.0 and Web2.0?
World wide web (WWW) created by Tim Burners Lee is the building blocks of what we know as
the internet today. There has been a continuous growth even at present, versions of the web are
adapting to contribute to user satisfaction. It is a surface for virtual communication where data is

Being the first stage of WWW, it is described as an interface where the exchange of information is
solely delivered to a viewer as the function of reading. This means there is a lack of user interaction
as its focuses on delivering the content, without having consumers rating or feedback. An example
would be a basic informative website without the opportunity for consumer to comment.

What Does Sin Symbolize In The Scarlet Letter
Nathaniel Hawthorne emphasizes symbolism using elements of nature that represent good vs. evil,
sin, and continual rebellion against Puritan society. The basis of Nathaniel s writing style is
symbolism and allegory, (where concrete objects usually have a hidden meaning). The symbolism
found most importantly throughout the novel so far would be light, darkness, and the rose bush,
all found in nature. Symbolism is present throughout the entire novel. The author uses light as a
symbol of good or evil. In the Puritan community, it may be believed that light will shine on those
who have not sinned. The others not in the light are certainly sinners and should not have beauty.
A true example of showing that Hester no longer remains in the sin free light is, Her prison door
was thrown open and she came forth into the sunshine, which, falling on all alike, seemed, to her
sick and morbid heart, as if meant for no other purpose than to reveal the scarlet letter on her...

For the characters in the novel, they seem to separate the town into two main areas. One being
the Puritan community town, tight knit and connected, free of sin, and the other being the
forest. The forest is dark and has major characters of sin in it such as the Devil, Roger
Chillingworth (spending years in the forest with Native Americans), and now holds the residence
of Hester Prynne, all symbols of darkness. A quote that is important to represent the dark forest is
when Hester and Pearl are leaving the governor s hall. It shows the importance of what the forest
truly represents stating, Wilt thou go with us tonight? There will be a merry company in the
forest; and I well nigh promised the Black Man that comely Hester Prynne should make one, said
by Mistress Hibbins (Ch. 8 pg. 104). Mistress is referencing the Devil who cultivates in the forest.

Clara, my Dad, and I are the last ones to arrive because our flight from Chicago was overlaid two

July in South Carolina. The lake smells like dead fish. Always, no matter what. We walked up
the old, wooden stairs. The light blue paint was chipping off the door, and the door itself looked
like it was about to fall of the hinges. Clara let herself in, pulling her lime suitcase behind her.
My two little cousins, Reagan and Matthew, immediately saw her and squealed with joy.

A Brief Note On Preventative Medicine And Education
Preventative Medicine and Education Poor health and homelessness has been connected through
multiple studies. Having poor health can cause homelessness. On the flip side, being homeless can
also cause poor health. Being homeless brings a list of complications including limited access to
getting proper health care. This causes the health of the homeless population in the United States to
be worse than that of the general population. Common health problems in the homeless population
include: mental health problems, substance abuse problems, bronchitis and pneumonia, problems
caused by being outdoors, wound and skin infections, along with the complications that follow
each of the listed problems (Medicine Plus, 2016). Along with the list of problems previously
stated, many homeless women are victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Children often have high
rates of emotional and behavioral problems, many times caused from having witnessed abuse.
Studies have shown 31 46% report having a chronic medical problem. (NHCHC, 2001, p.1).
According to these statistics almost half of the homeless population are suffering from chronic
health problems. The majority of which will not receive proper care to cure the health problems.
The homeless population, in order to address the living challenges, they use extraordinary amounts
of human services. Visits to a facility that provides health care is much higher for a homeless person
than the general population. Homeless adults are

Body Modifications In Millennials
The popular trend of body modifications among millennials, also known as generation Y, is a trend
that was scandalized in the generation of the baby boomers. When referring to body modifications
they refer specifically to tattoos and piercings (Swanger, 2006). Until recently, tattoos were mostly
popular among the perceived deviant, such as hoodlums, gang members, and convicts who were
associated with negative behaviour such as engaging in violent and dangerous activities and
potentially had poor mental health (Timming, 2015). This has changed for the millennials,
however, as many of the individuals who are getting piercings or tattoos are in their late teens or

until recently, the only people who had tattoos and piercings were gang members, bikers or

mind sets of tattoos than the younger generation, because many people in the older generations feel

someone without tattoos or piercings. Another survey cited by McElroy, Moore and Summers

Linux Network Name Spaces
Overview
In this paper we will discuss the Linux Network Name Space. First, the concept of namespaces
will be described along with an overview of the default name spaces available in the Linux
operating system. The Linux Network Name Space is a key enabler for some high profile
virtualization technologies including OpenStack and Docker.
Linux Name Spaces
Linux consists of the following six namespaces:
Network Network Namespace
PID Process Namespace
Mount Filesystem Namespace
User User Namespace
IPC Interprocess Communication Namespace
UTS Host and NIS Namespace
Linux namespaces can be traced back to early UNIX technologies called chroot, process jails
controlled where access is controlled with cgroups. The concept of a namespace is to isolate
processes from other processes on the system. This concept evolved into namespaces that are
created with clone() system call and manipulated with the setns() and unshare() system calls. The
clone() system call is used when creating child namespace from a parent or root namespace. As
the name would suggest this creates a clone of an existing stack. The setns() system call is used to
join a namespace. The unshare() system call is used for moving processes into a namespace, as the
name suggests the process

Parallels Between Mrs Dalloway and The Hours
The ongoing relationship between the literary movements of modernism and post modernism is
encompassed by the intertextual relationships between Stephen Daldry s The Hours and Virginia
Woolf s Mrs Dalloway . These relationships communicate the inadequacy of previous writings to
convey trauma, cultural crisis and the deep fragmentation within their respective societies. The
immediate context of these social dialogues creates a clear division between each text, however
the intertextual similarities between minor and major characters create an effective parallel to
traverse decades, years, months and days. This is in order to assess the lasting impacts of society

The coffee was very slow ... until Mr Whitbread had finished ... Hugh was so very slow the
agonising sense of immediacy both draws our attention back to clock time whilst allowing us to
delve into Clarissa s past as she recalls that Hugh is always so absurdly slow. As reality is blurred
in psychological time, external time punctuates the novel There! Out it boomed. First a warning,
musical, then the hour, irrevocable this reminds the reader that this story is in fact occurring in a
single day and every event experienced outside of this timeframe is a figment of a characters
memory. Woolf makes these memories the focus of the novel rather than external time to create a
mobile reality where she fabricates the sense of movement by traversing time through the
consciousness of her characters. These memories therefore are from a specific point of view and
therefore exclude some properties of the remembered moment and parts of said reality may simply
be dissolved in the air as the memory fades with ongoing time.
Daldry approaches Woolf s tunnelling technique with sensitivity and subtlety in order to unify
Virginia, Laura and Clarissa. The repetitive musical score by Philip Glass creates a sense of the
cyclical nature of time and is evocative of the relentlessness of time. This too creates an illusion of
both time and timelessness as the regular rhythm simulates that of a clock as

Tangerine Sinkhole Quotes
In Tangerine, a sinkhole occurs from pages 81 to 83. Although the actual event of the sinkhole
itself is very short, the effects of it last throughout the rest of the book. The sinkhole itself affects
many characters in the book, including Erik. Because of the sinkhole, the Lake Windsor

of course. But to the south, it also includes a corner of the soccer field and all of the baseball

onto the middle school, (Bloor 87). This quote is significant because it shows which areas of the
campus are marked as unsafe, which means that Erik won t be able to have a huge audience at his

Analysis Of Des Cannibales By Montaigne
This extract from Montaigne s Des Cannibales is found near the beginning of the essay. It is
pivotal in setting the precedent for the rest of the essay since it establishes how Montaigne came to
his viewpoints on the TupinambГЎ since they are different to those held by many of his
contemporaries. When Montaigne wrote, people were only beginning to learn about other areas of
the world. People on the whole had not travelled and so held ethnocentric views regarding culture.
They failed to understand the people of the New World, thus labeled them as sauvage and barbare
something which Montaigne challenges in this essay, and specifically sets out in this extract.
In the first part of this extract, Montaigne considers how one can obtain the most reliable
information on the New World. He wants to avoid creating stereotypes and prejudices, thus aspires
to get the most accurate information. Lines 1 2 of this passage demonstrate Montaigne s use of
employing syntax to highlight his ideas. By describing his servant as simple et grossier in the first
clause of the sentence, Montaigne s readers instinctive response to this description may be to
assume that, due to his lack of education or status, his view may not be of much value. The
references to great philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle throughout the essay could certainly be
considered to make the opinions of a plain and ignorant man seem irrelevant. However, true to his
style throughout Des Cannibales , Montaigne

awaking as well. It would be unavoidable for the two to collide in war. Like Germany, the Soviet
Union had established a new nation and created a large military power in the aftermath of World

The s Argument That The Holocaust Is Only Available...
Miller, like Glowacka, understands that literature, even fiction, transmits ideas and emotions to the
reader which are central to comprehending and learning from traumatic experiences. Miller
references Susan Suleiman s argument that the Holocaust is only available through representation .
Suleiman made this argument in response to Holocaust deniers who claim that fictitious memoirs
confirm the inexistence of the Holocaust. However, the point supports the idea that art, including
literature, allows the public to experience something like the Holocaust that otherwise would be not
be available to experience.
On the other hand, Miller successfully argues that fake memoirs are meant to highlight the
problematic nature of authenticity and capitalism has changed the idea of what we think is real and
what is not. By citing Baudrillard, Miller states that our idea of real is only a series of
representations that we think are real. In fact, all our ideas of reality are fabrications because
memory is not factual. The discovery of these fake memoirs can cause society to realize that all
memoirs are, in fact, fabrications. With that in mind, this article contradicts the idea that the public
can understand trauma through experiencing art. Overall, Stylised Configurations of Trauma
contributes to the art, trauma, and memory theme through proving that the study of fraudulent
memoirs can help explain the strange expectation that literature is able to provide access to

Written On The Body Stephen Oettermann
Decorating the Body: Exposing and Entertaining The following is the summary of chapter 12 of the
book named Written on the Body: The Tattoo in European and American History originally written
by literature doctorate, Stephan Oettermann. The author is aimed to illustrate how the individuals
get tattooed, entertained the people and displayed their life. Capturing, tattooing and displaying the
savage individuals and having the voluntarily tattooed individuals had been the beginning of
western tattooing in nineteen century. Being apart from a showman in performances, narrating
biographies were one of the modes of display in the tattooed culture of the West. Firstly, the author
recognized the tattooed individuals were the uncivilized violent people who were captured and
inked to be exhibited to the people (Oettermann 1). One of the reasons given for the tattooing was
to identify the particular individual as a distinguished savage person among the people. The
example of Eskimo family, which was captured and tattooed by the French seamen is, explains this
situation. The story of Prince Jeoly who was put on show after being tattooed is another... Show

Biographies were written on the life of the individuals who were tattooed forcibly and also
voluntarily including real and narrated stories. The biography of John Rutherford, The Great
White Chief John Rutherford is reciting the story of him and his lifestyle with inked body, which
was considered as a true story by poetic standards only. Another book named A Narrative of
Shipwreck Captivity and Suffering of Horace Holden and Benjamin Nute describes how Holden
gets forcibly tattooed and his life experiences as a tattooed but not a showman. These examples of
biographies support the authors claim that great literatures had been emerged in the beginning of
the Western tattooing

Alexander Hamilton s Influence On American History
Alexander Hamilton recently rose to prominence again because of the hit Broadway musical
Hamilton, and the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Previously Hamilton s role as
Founding Father has been diminished because he never became president, and he also experienced
political scandals that were detrimental to his career. However, his lack of prominence as a
Founding Father, has not weakened his actual impact on United Stateshistory and political system.
Alexander Hamiltonhad an immense impact on American history, through both obvious and subtle
means, that have resulted in the government and political system we have today. Some obvious
contributions that he made to the current political system, include the position of Secretary of
Treasury, which set precedent, along with his establishment of a national bank. Earlier than that, he
was instrumental in the creation of the Constitution as we know it today, and also helped the
Constitution pass in various states. Some more subtle ways that he has influenced American history
include his contributions to the party system, as well as his role in getting Thomas Jeffersonelected
as the third president of the United States. Part of the reason that Hamilton is not remembered as
well as other Founding Fathers, is that he does not fit nicely into any political boxes, or schools of
thought. As an immigrant from the Caribbean, he was a poster boy for the American Dream , and

He was known for his temper, and was very controversial, even amongst his own party. Hamilton
married and had multiple children, but he also had an affair with another woman during his

by Aaron Burr. Hamilton is a reminder that even the geniuses and Founding Fathers were flawed,
and they still managed to found arguably one of the strongest countries

Type Of Heroes In To Kill A Mockingbird
There are many types of heroes but if you look further into them one might find that, mostly, they
can all be put into one of three categories. First there are the Superheroes. They are the ones with
larger than life powers. They are often found in comic books and movies. The Superheroes are
arguably the most well known type of heroes. Great examples include, Superman, Wonder Woman,
and Spiderman. The other type of heroes are the Vigilante. The Vigilante are the heroes that save
the day but are wanted by the police. They don t normally have superpowers but they can. They are
normally depicted with a tragic backstory and they fight crimes because of those horrific events.
Some well known examples are; The Punisher, Batman, and The Watchmen.... Show more content

Some heroes just do their jobs. In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird
, by Harper Lee a lawyer named
Atticus Finch is an example of someone being a hero by doing their job. Atticus Finch is a
fictional lawyer who lives in the fictional town of Maycomb County, Alabama. He is the father
of the book s main characters, Jeremy Jem Finch and Jean Louise Scout Finch. In the book a,
which was set in the 1930s, a black man named Tom Robinson was accused of raping a white
girl. No lawyer wanted to help him because of his race, so Atticus decided to defend him even
though he knew he would lose. Even though the evidence was more than enough to prove that
Tom was innocent, he was found guilty. He was killed in prison with the prison guards claiming
he tried to escape even though evidence said otherwise. Atticus became a hero to all of the
blacks in Maycomb. He did not care about the color of Tom s skin. The book was set in a time
where racism and segregation were everywhere especially in Alabama. Atticus knew he couldn t
win the case but he tried anyway. He proved that one can be a hero by just doing their job and
treating others like human beings and not differently because of the color of their skin. The
movie, The Guardian, provides examples of other everyday heroes. The main characters are Ben
Randall and Jake Fisher. They are Coast Guard Rescue Swimmers. In the movie, Ben is involved
in a rescue that many of his crew members died in. He

Comparing Obsession And Competition In Christopher Nolan s...
Understandably, those who play to win are not satisfied until they do, but there is a fine line
between obsession and competition. The Prestige directed by Christopher Nolan, is about two
magicians become obsessed with out doing one another originally starting as competition, later
turning into obsession. The loss of Angier s wife Julia s life during a performance, Angier blames
Borden for not tying the right knot, inwhich he is unable to recall which he tied the night of her
death. The Prestige teaches the lesson that each obsession eventually leads to personal sacrafices,
shows that there is sacrafice in every choice you make. Borden sacrifices his family by alienating

herself afterwards. Contemplation leads to her coherent suicide, Sarah said; I want you to be

willingly sacrafices for the sake of what Borden expresses as the ultimate trick in which she does
not understand, gruesomly expressing her hanging and the fatal snap of her neck sound like
that of the birdcage that he used in his magic acts on a regular basis. Expressing the main idea of
the theme of the movie that has been trying to be gotten across to the viewer all along. Angier
says; Nobody cares about the man in the box, the man who disappears. (The Prestige) Because no
one knows he exists it is just belived to be an illusionary trick, in the audiences mind he does not

Why Harry Was So Sick Of Being Lied
There he was again, staring out a window. This time, Harry was watching the suburban empire
from which he had narrowly escaped, fly past in a dizzying blur. The bus was small and oddly
smelled of raisins, but he was on his way. He had managed to elude Petunia s hawk like watch on
him and prevail against all odds. In his hand, he still tightly clutched the locket, half afraid it
would suddenly slip through his fingers. Quite honestly, it wouldn t surprise him if it did. In the
wizarding world, anything was possible. Which was sometimes an unprecedented problem.
Through the hexes and curses, riddles and potions, it could be hard to know what to believe. Harry
was so sick of being lied to. It was an infuriating game of tag and chase. Every... Show more content

Strangely though, Petunia was still sitting at the table. Almost expectantly, like she was waiting
for something. Noticing Harry still standing there, she gave him a nasty glare. What are you still
doing here, boy? The malice in her tone was evident, as always. Harry sighed and left. Though
he tried to ignore it, Harry couldn t help but remain curious over Petunia s peculiar anxiety.
Lying awake in bed, he listened. The house was quiet for the longest time, aside from the low
hum of the television. Then, Harry heard the phone ring. Petunia must ve jumped up suddenly,
because he heard her chair scrape against the floor. Petunia hissed into the phone urgently.
Swiftly slinking out of bed, Harry carefully opened his door. Edging along the hallway, he
moved until Petunia s voice was just around the corner. Yes. I have it. I ve had it ever since Lily
died. No. Lily s pensieve is safe. I understand. It remains in the package hidden in the kitchen. It s
inside an empty jar on a topmost shelf. Harry had gone pale. His mother s memories were in this
very house, just within his grasp. And now, he knew exactly where they were. Listen, I don t want
to be in any part of this... None of this was supposed to happen... that was an accident... Harry was
already dashing back to the cupboard. He hardly got any sleep that night. Thoughts of what this
pensieve could possibly hold, kept him up. But why did Petunia have it? Harry

Multiculturalism Has Had a Rough Start
Obama once said that a multicultural society shows strong economy and a strong country. But is
it true? What about those who cannot integrate? What about all those people who look down at
the immigrants and always blame them for the bad things there happening? And is it a strong
society if it cannot provide its citizens? In Denmark we are having a hard time accepting our
immigrants. We blame them for almost everything. But it is not our immigrants in general; it is
primarily those from the Middle East. If the immigrants come from Sweden, France, England
and so on, we have no problems with them. We do not blame them for those things there going
bad, but why? Is it because of the cultural differences, or is it just easier to blame the Arabs after
9/11? In the UK and the US they have more success by integrating the immigrants, but they do as
well experience the same problems with the immigration of Arabs. I believe that it is a result of
the huge media covering of the terror situation in the world. And as long as the media are
exhibiting people from the Middle East as terrorists there will be a general negative opinion about
the Arab people, and therefore the accepting of the people from Arabian will be difficult. The
problem with the immigrants is the missing integration of them in the society. But the Danes
cannot be blamed for this, because the immigrants are trans national. What I mean by that is very
simple: the immigrants care more for the countries they escaped and the

Voter Suppression And Voting Suppression
What is voter suppression?
The voter suppression strategy is used to influence the outcome of an election by dissuading voters
from exercising their right to vote. Voter suppression should not be comparable to campaigning
because the two differs significantly. Campaigning in its political sense is the ability to change
voter s likelihood of voting behavior to change their opinions through persuasion. Voter suppression
on the other hand attempts to reduce the number of voters by means of suppression.
History of voter suppression The United States first began to deal with the issue of voter
suppression during the Reconstruction. During Reconstruction freed slaves earned their right to
vote and hold office through the fifteenth amendment in 1870. In 1877, Democrats, known as
Dixiecrats, began to impose laws that were designed to suppress the African American vote or
better known as Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow voting laws required the freedmen to pass literacy
tests that they were unable to pass because of no formal education because of their status of slaves.
Many states created poll taxes, which many poor Americans, white and black, were unable to pay.
Many precincts made their voting precincts white only so that blacks would have nowhere to cast
their votes. The Jim Crow voter suppression tactics were so successful that only three percent of
African Americans in the south were registered to vote in 1940. Although African American males
were given the right to vote in

Banning Boxing Essay
Banning Boxing
Last year half the world stood still for one of the biggest spectacles in sport a championship
boxing match. In May 2002, Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson stepped in the ring to settle a
yearlong grudge by fighting each other. For the event, both men were flown to Las Vegas,
Nevada, where they trained for weeks and prepared themselves for the bout. The revenue created
from stadium seats, advertising and pay per view television (arranged by Don King of course)
amounted to over 100 million dollars, all leading up to a bout that, in all possibility, could have
been over in the first round. Months of preparation and millions of dollars in investment would
climax in a 3 minute event. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Years of abuse in the ring (punches to the chest, head and stomach) have taken their toll on him, and
the evidence of brain damage is chillingly present in his constant shakes and movements a reminder
of the risk involved when entering the ring.
As well as the physical danger there is also corruption in boxing, as illegal gambling on fixed
matches can lead to gang crime and murders. As shown in the film Snatch , a gang leader is led
to placing extraordinary amounts of money on a fixed bout and ends up in trouble with his
clients when one of the fighters had a different bet and caused him to lose. These chains of
events can be seen as a justice for those who take part in illegal gambling, but nonetheless it
should be stopped. Boxing leads us to believe that our problems can be solved with violence,
instead of dealing with them properly. If boxing were banned, it would almost certainly go
underground and cause even more crimes to deal with.
On the other hand, there are some advantages to boxing, in that it generates a lot of income for
the organisers, promoters and coaches, and even the boxers themselves get a pay check in excess
of one million dollars (in the biggest events). The fighters are clearly willing to take the risk of
injury and concussion to earn large amounts of money, and if the worst should happen, they accept
the responsibility of their actions.

The Great Ancestry Of The Crown Of Camelot
The old scholar practically beamed as he unrolled the next scroll. Let it be known, the great
ancestry of the crown of Camelot.
Geoffrey began to read off lineage that most nobles in Camelot knew by heart, until he came to the
one that Merlin both anticipated and feared. The warlock was trembling, as he awaited the signal
from the dais. His hand gripped the dragon bone hilt of Carnwenhau, drawing deep on the strength
within himself. He silently asked that his grandfather, who once wore the dagger, to be with him.
...His Majesty, High King of Briton, Aurelius Ambrosius in the Great Marriage Rite with a druid
priestess begat a son, Balinor Emrys of the Dragon Lord line, Earl of Snowdonia...
Merlin heard his mother s gasp resound across the near silent room. He grinned, wondering what
she was going to think of the next part.
This has been corroborated by His Royal Majesty, King Lot of Lothian and the High Druid Iseldir.
Lord Balinor, joined to Hunith of Ealdor, in turn begat one son.
Merlin took a deep breath and stepped partially out of the shadows, standing near the entrance to
the Great Hall. The Great Marriage Rite to validify Balinor s heritage was a bit of a stretch.
Although recognized as a joining among the druidic population and others who still revered the
Old Religion, it was not something that would be upheld as a true Royal Line in the eyes of the
Roman church, if his legitimacy was ever challenged...but it was acceptable enough for the role of

Astronomy Impact
Astronomical impact of the Moon on Earth
By: Peter Wehrfritz (500405367) CPCS 181
The moon has had a profound impact on the earth s evolution as well as life on Earth. Our moon
is believed to have been created about 4.5 billion years ago, when a large planetoid crashed into
the Earth, spraying space debris which was gradually captured by gravity 2. Eventually, this
material solidified into a body which we know as our moon. 3. This process is unique in our solar
system as the other planet s moons were formed by capturing free floating bodies with their gravity
3.
Physical Characteristics of the Moon
Earth s moon is the brightest object in our night sky. It has an elliptical orbit around the earth every
27.322 days and it also takes approximately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The gravitational force of the moon is strong enough to exert a pulling force on the Earth, but
the Earth is able to hold on to everything except the water 7. As the water is in constant motion
the moon gravity is able to create a pull on the water, causing it to bulge resulting in high tide 7.
As the Moon and the earth are moving with respect to each other, the force creating high tide
also moves over different parts of the earth. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides,
with about 12 hours and 25 minutes between the two high tides 7. However, these periods do not
happen at the same time each day because the moon takes about 50 minutes more than earth s 24
hour day to exactly align again with the same point on the Earth. Therefore, the timing of high
tides is staggered throughout the month, with each tide occurring approximately 24 hours and 50
minutes later than the previous one 6. It is also observed that the water on the opposite side of
Earth which faces away from the Moon also experiences high tide 6. The reason is that the
stronger centrifugal force pulls in the opposite direction to negate the moon s gravitational pull on
the earth to keep them apart and thus causes the ocean water on the opposite side of the Earth to
bulge and experience high tide

The Blood Wedding written by Federico Garcia Lorca is a tragic love story focusing on women
and two men who love her. It was first performed in Madrid in march 1933.The play has many
references to social, cultural and historical events and themes. Blood Wedding opened on Thursday
November 9, 2017 at Aaron Davis Hall.
In Blood Wedding the wealthy bridegroom lives alone with his mother. The mother lost her

character, they starts facing the bride as if to give more attention to what s about to happen. The
mother looks at the bride and then she spits at her and the light goes off and the act I starts. I
think this is very interesting because this gives us the foreshadow of what s about to happen in
the play. Her action which was spitting on the bride showed very strong hate and disgrace
towards the bride which I think is very stronger than just slapping her. In this play, the style of
the stage that was the black box stage. I think this style of the stage was very helpful as it didn t
block the view of the actors as the thrust stage did which was used in the crucible. I was able to
see the actors clearly without their back facing towards me. The role of a wife was played by
Drew Beaubian. What I really liked about her character is that she is very innocent and unaware of
her husband love for another woman who turns out be her cousin. She worries about her family. I
was expecting there to be a lot of crying once the mother and wife finds out about the death the
bridegroom and Leonard but to my surprise neither of them cried in the play which was pretty odd
to me knowing the son was very dear to the mother. Ana Rivera played as a

Essay about Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman
Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman
The popular saying actions speak louder than words is upended in Amiri Baraka s play, The
Dutchman, where words, or in this case language, speaks louder than the actions of the characters,
Lula and Clay. Language governs the characters and their actions, and is therefore a prominent
feature in shaping the identities of Lula and Clay. In the play, Baraka conveys the significance of
Lula and Clay being enabled to change their identities by a simple change in the type of language
they employ. Though it may seem that the characters have dominion over the language and can
shape their own identities by a simple change in the language they utilize, through repetition of the

She uses lies to make Clay feel that she knows him and has control over his life. Therefore the lies
become a form of control that Lula has over Clay, and white people have over black people. What
Lula fails to comprehend is that by lying she doesn t control the world and her identity in
society, but the world starts to control her and her identity in the social structure. Clay, like
Lula, is also caught in this trap of lies because of the fact that he is black. Clay argues that
[people] don t know anything except what s there for [them] to see. An act. Lies. Device. Not
the pure heart, the pumping black heart (34). He is living a lie; his whole identity as a black
person as perceived by outsiders is a lie. Even though he chooses this fake façade of a white
man instead of murdering white people, the language of lies once again shapes his identity as a
fake white man. Lula also tells Clay that by telling her he loves her is the only kind of thing [he]
will lie about. Especially if [he] think[s] it ll keep [her] alive (27). What Lula implies here is that
if Clay doesn t lie about loving her, then because he doesn t employ the language of lies, he will
act upon the truth and murder her. Though Clay denies this accusation, the fact that Lula believes
that Clay would lie, shapes his identity as a liar. Both Lula and Clay try to form their identity apart
from what society has imposed on them by lying. Both fail on this account,

The Ideal Household By Xenophon
The purpose of The Ideal Household as told by Xenophon, a student of Socrates, was to show the
reader how an elite Athenian lady lived as well as to show what an ideal marriage looked like.
Xenophon wanted to convey to the readers what he thought an ideal marriage looked like and also
what he generally thought most marriages in Athens were. The overall message of this source is
not explicit in nature, but does offer a subtle yet firm message on how women in Athens were
expected to behave. Wives of elite men were often expected to fully run the household while
dedicating their lives to their husbands and family. The work the women put into their family and
households was a full time job that was usually never noticed or acknowledged outside of the
household. Xenophon conveyed his message of what he thought an ideal marriageand household
was by asking an Athenian gentleman questions about his marriage and life. The man offered
insight into his and his wifes life and he spoke about how he lived a relaxed life while his wife
attended to most if not all the household duties. Xenophon seemed worried about what this man
actually did with his life and the man replied that he does not spend my days indoors, if for no
other reason than because my wife can manage all our domestic affairs without my aid. . ( ) The
man made it very clear that he has in a way trained his wife to run their household while he does
whatever he pleases. Xenophon was very interested by this and wondered

Selective Oxidation Of 2 Naphthol Selective oxidation of 2 naphthol to 2 hydroxy 1,4 naphthoquinone with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by 5,10,15, 20 tetrakis(p sulfonato phenyl)porphinatomanganese(III) chloride in aqueous solution. M. Hassanein*, S. El Khalafy , S. Shendy Tanta University, Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry, Tanta 31527, Egypt. Abstract 2 Naphthol has been selectively oxidized to 2 hydroxy 1,4 naphthoquinone (HNQ, Lawsone) with hydrogen peroxide in presence of 5, 10, 15, 20 tetrakis (p sulfonatophenyl)porphinatomanganese (III) chloride as catalyst in alkaline aqueous solution. The catalytic oxidation afforded 2 hydroxy 1,4 naphthoquinone in high yield (95 %). The effect of reaction parameters on the catalytic activity and the yield of HNQ have been investigated. UV vis spectral analysis during oxidation reaction indicated that oxomanganese intermediate O=Mn(IV)TPPSCl was the active species in the oxidation reaction. • 3. Luminol Forensics Lab Report Reflecting on the Impacts of Science, Specifically Forensics: Luminol Luminol (C8H7N3O2) is a very effective and convenient chemical used in crime scene investigations. The presence of blood can be found with luminol sprayed throughout a crime scene. The chemical reaction between luminol and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) the oxidizing agent, catalyzed by the iron in blood, reveals this presence. When investigating a crime scene, investigators use luminol joined by other chemicals; such as hydrogen peroxide, to search for blood evident. In order for the luminol to react with the hydrogen peroxide in a glowing manner, a catalyst is needed. In this case, the substance that increases the rate of the chemical reaction; the catalyst, is the iron in blood. The iron atoms are found in the haemoglobin within blood. The reaction produces a cyclic peroxide and releases energy, essentially causing the blue, chemiluminescent lightvisible when observing under a blacklight. This reaction was developed so that crime investigators and scientists present at a crime scene can view blood that may not be visible to the naked eye. The forensic industry is greatly impacted by this reaction because it has provided essential evidence and information needed to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A chemical reaction involving luminol can result in chemiluminescence when coming in contact with other substances other than blood. It can react with copper, horseradish sauce, fecal matter, and certain types of bleaches. This can be difficult for forensic scientists because bleach solution is often used to thoroughly clean crime scenes by criminals prior to investigation. This is a problem because when luminol and an oxidant is sprayed throughout the crime scene, a chemiluminescence glows throughout the whole area, disguising any areas that may have had blood prior to the thorough clean ... • 4. Essay about Eric Hoover s Honor for Honor s Sake Eric Hoover s Honor for Honor s Sake The idea of being judged by your peers has long been accepted as the best way of regulating a population. Even the Constitution uses a peer based judicial system when laying down the framework for the United States government. There are, however, some limits to when and where this system can be effectively implemented. Eric Hoover challenges the use of peer review in universities by telling the testimonials of several students who have been hurt by a system that has overstepped their bounds. The majority of the arguments made by Hoover in Honor for Honor s Sake are pathos based arguments but they are closely entwined with fact. It is this combination of both logos and pathos that creates a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the students accused quit the university before the trial; others were prosecuted and found guilty. There were some insanity pleas that caused those trials to run longer, and untimely allowed the students to go without punishment. The students that were accused were not the only people that suffered because of the charges. The honor committee that was trying the cases had to juggle both an academic schedule and run a ridiculous amount of trials at the same time. Hoover points to different mass accusation that occurred at another university with an honor code. The only difference is that at the other school there were other options than just expulsion. The ability to have a lesser charge made some of the cases easier to prosecute, however there was still trouble prosecuting the large number of cases. Hoover s use of testimonials convinces the reader on an emotional level. When ideals that are commonly held as true are put into question, it creates an emotion that can be used as a pathos argument. Hoover uses this technique to show how the honor code at some universities goes against commonly held ideals. Hoover says, Some students have charged that the honor system is racially biased and excessively harsh. And lawyers have argued that accused students have no guarantee of due process in the secret trials, run by students who, though they may not even be old enough to drink, have the power to ... The University Of Texas At El Paso Keren Gaona The University of Texas at El Paso Global Business 3304 May 19, 2016 According to the speculations of linguistic expert, John McWhorter, who wrote the article, What the World Will Speak in 2115, in one hundred years English will become the most widely understood language. If current trends continue, in the future one can imagine a world in which humans all share a single universal language. Having a common language would potentially open the doors to many opportunities for increased economic activity and cultural interaction. Additionally, as we travel into the 22nd Century, lesser used and more complex languages that are spoken today will become extinct. Subsequently, the few languages that survive will evolve into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to his work, English is the fastest spreading language in human history and is used by an estimated 1.27 billion people globally (Neeley, 2012). The English language is already the most popular language in the world, accompanied by each person s native language. Also, compared to other languages English is relatively easy to learn (McWhorter, 2015). This does not mean that the meshing of new versions of English are always pristine. Ana Lucia Gonzalez, reporter for BBC, wrote the article, Life in Spanglish for California s Young Latinos to address this issue of blending language. However, it may come as a surprise that English would be the one to dominate, given that Mandarin Chinese is spoken by the largest population in the world. It is very unlikely for Mandarin to replace English because English is the already the official language in commerce around the world and it is also the language in which organizations such as Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) communicate (Martinez, 2014). A reason that McWhorter provided to why Mandarin Chinese will not be used as a global language, is because it is very difficult to master the language if not introduced to it at a young age. Furthermore, English is much more user friendly and functional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Importance Of Prosocial Behavior Humans are inherently social being meaning they naturally tend to live in groups and that can consist of both kin and nonkin. While humans do form communities there are conflicts that have and will continue to occur because humans possess and exhibit traits both for and against prosocial behavior. These antisocial traits continue to thrive in humans because it is working in conjunction with other traits that are desired in humans or the trait themselves yields unexpected, but welcome behavior. Morality, human s conscience that dictates right from wrong, balances these traits and encourages this prosocial behavior, by enabling important inclinations such as cooperation and altruismthat improve human interactions. Generally speaking, actions that benefit the community will in turn benefit the survival of that individual in the social environments constructed by humans. While there are methods to both suppress unwanted tendencies and encourage wanted tendencies, Boehm focuses a significant amount on these suppression techniques. The suppression of such bad behavior allows coherency in the group. This will cover a few key mechanisms of this suppression including the guidelines created by societies, the regulation of them to uphold such ideals and some of the genetic forces that drive evolution. An important way to maintain a functioning society is to suppress the individuals who are unable to abide by the social norm and therefore threaten to disrupt the balance and order of ... Your typical Haredi Jew also known as ultra orthodox is known to be segregated from society and stick around other Haredi Jews and communities. According to Jews in Israel the biggest long term problem that their country is facing is that they were more likely to cite economic concerns (such as Israel s high cost of living, or a shortage of affordable housing in Tel Aviv and other cities) as they were to mention military or national security issues (such as terror attacks or Iran s nuclear program). This belief that Israel s biggest problem is the economy is a belief between Jews in Israel, however American Jews have a completely different perspective into Israel s long term problem. When American Jews were asked what the long term problem, fully two thirds cited a military or security issue, and hardly any (1%) mentioned economic difficulties. What this shows is a separation in how American Jews and Israeli Jews view the government, or American Jews do not know the struggle that the Jews are facing in Israel. Another problem that American and Israel Jews disagree on is the range of political issues concerning the State of Israel and the peace process. While Israeli Jews are skeptical that Israel and an independent Palestinian state can peacefully coexist, most American Jews are optimistic that a two state solution is possible. These two different perspectives is something that is eroding and segregating the Jewish people, it is two different societies that each one reside in and it makes it very difficult ... Looking at Heat again, when Neil Mc Cauley is dying, he reaches out gesturing to hold Vincent s hand, squeezing it tightly. This scene cries out as a testimony to Michael Mann s recurring interest in the relationship between the professional opposites which almost always seems to result in a metaphysical displacement that is strangely elevating. In Heat Neil Mc Cauley is a criminal whilst Vincent (Al Pacino) is a cop. The expressionistic use of urban architecture in Mann s films (concreate, glass, steel) highlights the estrangement that postmodernism creates between people. Examining the Effect of Peppermint on Cognitive Functioning. Psi Chi, The International Honor Society In Psychology, 19 (3), 88 97. This study speaks about whether or not an alerting odor, such as peppermint, can affect attention and working memory. Research has been completed previously on the influences of odorants on cognitive functioning, physiology, behavior, and mood. From earlier research, it was resulted that a person s atmosphere was affected in either a positive or negative way; depending on the type of smell they inhaled. If a participant smelled an unpleasant smell, it was determined that the person would have a negative change in their mood; when the participant would inhale a positive smell, their mood would change positively. The study consisted of fifty, female, undergraduate college students. The ethnicities that were use for this study were African American, European, Asian, Hispanic, biracial, and a very slight percentage was categorized as other. Empires with their self prophesied title, innately express the notion of expansion! Builders of empires through the ages have consistently shown the somewhat insatiable need to expand! It is this notion of expansion or more specifically the necessity for it (Leroy Beaulieu, 1891), that seems a continual challenge for empire builders to control and therefore sustain. Unfortunately because of the autonomy allowed to the elites (also enhanced by ideals of race supremacy and hierarchal traditions), they became entrenched in ideology and bureaucracy escaping the critique that was necessary for accountability and appropriate regulation. The economic hub became a great arena where private savings were mobilised for investment overseas (Darwin, 2009) feeding the perpetual wheel of individual greed, exchanging the souls (if you like) of local economies and scooping out the real assets of an enterprise while selling on shrivelled carcasses to a bamboozled public (Darwin, ... • 13. The Need to Support and Assist Employees Throughout our career, we have been taught to check our personal problems at the door prior to starting our work shift. In other words, personal problems are exactly what it is, personal , and have no place in a work environment. In today s new economy, organizations are realizing the importance of providing assistance to employees dealing with major personal problems. At times, when an employee is having a personal problem at home, it can after their work performance and can potentially disrupt the work flow of the organization. Industrial and labor relations experts talk of a changing labor force and the need for employers to develop new polices in response to the changing needs of their employees, if they wish to remain competitive in an increasingly world economy (Kamerman Kahn, 1987, p. 2). I personally believe that employers should provide assistance and be supportive of their employees. Unfortunately many of us in the work force are presented with personal problems that are unforeseen. Organizations need to be open minded in regards to these isolated issues and provide support during the employee s difficult time. Emotions play a critical role in the success of every organization, yet many people in key decision making positions, leaders with outstanding technical skills, fail to understand the role emotions play in a work setting (Reece, Brandt, Howie, 2011, p. 190). It is most meaningful for me because when the movie came out in movie theaters on March 2, 1965 I was 8 years old and my dad took me to see this movie. Two years later the movie was again in theaters, I have just forgotten what holiday time it was released for, and this time I went with my mom and my dad had passed away. Here are some interesting and perhaps unknown facts about The Sound of Music . The Trapp Family ran into monetary problems in 1955 and Maria sold the rights to German movie producer Wolfgang Reinhardt for a mere $9,000. However we must consider the fact that in those days this amount of money was worth a whole lot more than it would be in today s terms. What I do find amazing is that Maria and the Von Trapp family never got any royalties from the two German movies that were released based on their life nor did they receive anything from the Broadway production of The Sound of Music which ran for over three years or from the movie, which brought in about $300 million. Books written about slavery and its cruelty brought more concern to people regarding the real issue with slavery. The most influential book of its day was a novel about the conflict between an enslaved man named Tom and the brutal white slave owner Simon Legree. The publication of Uncle Tom s Cabin in 1852, by the northern writer Harriet Beecher Stowe moved a generation of Northerners as well as many Europeans to regard slave owners as monstrously cruel and inhuman. However, in response Southerners, condemned these truths and claimed it was just proof of the prejudice northerners had against the southern way of life. In addition, Hinton R. Helper s book of nonfiction, Impending Crisis of the South, attacked slavery at another angle. The author used statistics to demonstrate to fellow Southerners that slavery weakened the South s economy. In response many southern states moved to ban the book but it had already been in wide distribution. In addition, to counter the attack that slavery was evil, pro slavery southern whites argued that slavery was just the opposite, a positive good for slaves and masters alike. They argued that slavery was sanctioned by the Bible and was firmly grounded in philosophy and history. Southern writers also contrasted the conditions of Northern wage workers as wage slaves forced to work long hours in factories and mines with the familial bond that could develop on plantations between slaves and masters. One of the southern authors George Fitzhugh questioned the principal of equal rights for unequal men and attacked the capitalist wage system as worse than slavery. Common health problems in the homeless population include: mental health problems, substance abuse problems, bronchitis and pneumonia, problems caused by being outdoors, wound and skin infections, along with the complications that follow each of the listed problems (Medicine Plus, 2016). Along with the list of problems previously stated, many homeless women are victims of domestic or sexual abuse. Children often have high rates of emotional and behavioral problems, many times caused from having witnessed abuse. Studies have shown 31 46% report having a chronic medical problem. (NHCHC, 2001, p.1). According to these statistics almost half of the homeless population are suffering from chronic health problems. First, the concept of namespaces will be described along with an overview of the default name spaces available in the Linux operating system. The Linux Network Name Space is a key enabler for some high profile virtualization technologies including OpenStack and Docker. Linux Name Spaces Linux consists of the following six namespaces: Network Network Namespace PID Process Namespace Mount Filesystem Namespace User User Namespace IPC Interprocess Communication Namespace UTS Host and NIS Namespace Linux namespaces can be traced back to early UNIX technologies called chroot, process jails controlled where access is controlled with cgroups. The concept of a namespace is to isolate processes from other processes on the system. This concept evolved into namespaces that are created with clone() system call and manipulated with the setns() and unshare() system calls. The clone() system call is used when creating child namespace from a parent or root namespace. As the name would suggest this creates a clone of an existing stack. The setns() system call is used to join a namespace. The unshare() system call is used for moving processes into a namespace, as the name suggests the process ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Parallels Between Mrs Dalloway and The Hours The ongoing relationship between the literary movements of modernism and post modernism is encompassed by the intertextual relationships between Stephen Daldry s The Hours and Virginia Woolf s Mrs Dalloway . These relationships communicate the inadequacy of previous writings to convey trauma, cultural crisis and the deep fragmentation within their respective societies. The immediate context of these social dialogues creates a clear division between each text, however the intertextual similarities between minor and major characters create an effective parallel to traverse decades, years, months and days. This is in order to assess the lasting impacts of society on an individual s desire to escape either physically or metaphorically.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hugh was so very slow the agonising sense of immediacy both draws our attention back to clock time whilst allowing us to delve into Clarissa s past as she recalls that Hugh is always so absurdly slow. As reality is blurred in psychological time, external time punctuates the novel There! Out it boomed. First a warning, musical, then the hour, irrevocable this reminds the reader that this story is in fact occurring in a single day and every event experienced outside of this timeframe is a figment of a characters memory. Woolf makes these memories the focus of the novel rather than external time to create a mobile reality where she fabricates the sense of movement by traversing time through the consciousness of her characters. These memories therefore are from a specific point of view and therefore exclude some properties of the remembered moment and parts of said reality may simply be dissolved in the air as the memory fades with ongoing time. Daldry approaches Woolf s tunnelling technique with sensitivity and subtlety in order to unify Virginia, Laura and Clarissa. The repetitive musical score by Philip Glass creates a sense of the cyclical nature of time and is evocative of the relentlessness of time. This too creates an illusion of both time and timelessness as the regular rhythm simulates that of a clock as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is pivotal in setting the precedent for the rest of the essay since it establishes how Montaigne came to his viewpoints on the TupinambГЎ since they are different to those held by many of his contemporaries. When Montaigne wrote, people were only beginning to learn about other areas of the world. People on the whole had not travelled and so held ethnocentric views regarding culture. They failed to understand the people of the New World, thus labeled them as sauvage and barbare something which Montaigne challenges in this essay, and specifically sets out in this extract. In the first part of this extract, Montaigne considers how one can obtain the most reliable information on the New World. He wants to avoid creating stereotypes and prejudices, thus aspires to get the most accurate information. Lines 1 2 of this passage demonstrate Montaigne s use of employing syntax to highlight his ideas. By describing his servant as simple et grossier in the first clause of the sentence, Montaigne s readers instinctive response to this description may be to assume that, due to his lack of education or status, his view may not be of much value. The references to great philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle throughout the essay could certainly be considered to make the opinions of a plain and ignorant man seem irrelevant. Miller, like Glowacka, understands that literature, even fiction, transmits ideas and emotions to the reader which are central to comprehending and learning from traumatic experiences. Miller references Susan Suleiman s argument that the Holocaust is only available through representation . Suleiman made this argument in response to Holocaust deniers who claim that fictitious memoirs confirm the inexistence of the Holocaust. However, the point supports the idea that art, including literature, allows the public to experience something like the Holocaust that otherwise would be not be available to experience. On the other hand, Miller successfully argues that fake memoirs are meant to highlight the problematic nature of authenticity and capitalism has changed the idea of what we think is real and what is not. By citing Baudrillard, Miller states that our idea of real is only a series of representations that we think are real. In fact, all our ideas of reality are fabrications because memory is not factual. The discovery of these fake memoirs can cause society to realize that all memoirs are, in fact, fabrications. With that in mind, this article contradicts the idea that the public can understand trauma through experiencing art. Alexander Hamilton s Influence On American History Alexander Hamilton recently rose to prominence again because of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, and the book Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. Previously Hamilton s role as Founding Father has been diminished because he never became president, and he also experienced political scandals that were detrimental to his career. However, his lack of prominence as a Founding Father, has not weakened his actual impact on United Stateshistory and political system. Alexander Hamiltonhad an immense impact on American history, through both obvious and subtle means, that have resulted in the government and political system we have today. Some obvious contributions that he made to the current political system, include the position of Secretary of Treasury, which set precedent, along with his establishment of a national bank. Earlier than that, he was instrumental in the creation of the Constitution as we know it today, and also helped the Constitution pass in various states. Some more subtle ways that he has influenced American history include his contributions to the party system, as well as his role in getting Thomas Jeffersonelected as the third president of the United States. In Denmark we are having a hard time accepting our immigrants. We blame them for almost everything. But it is not our immigrants in general; it is primarily those from the Middle East. If the immigrants come from Sweden, France, England and so on, we have no problems with them. We do not blame them for those things there going bad, but why? In the UK and the US they have more success by integrating the immigrants, but they do as well experience the same problems with the immigration of Arabs. The voter suppression strategy is used to influence the outcome of an election by dissuading voters from exercising their right to vote. Voter suppression should not be comparable to campaigning because the two differs significantly. Campaigning in its political sense is the ability to change voter s likelihood of voting behavior to change their opinions through persuasion. Voter suppression on the other hand attempts to reduce the number of voters by means of suppression. History of voter suppression The United States first began to deal with the issue of voter suppression during the Reconstruction. During Reconstruction freed slaves earned their right to vote and hold office through the fifteenth amendment in 1870. In 1877, Democrats, known as Dixiecrats, began to impose laws that were designed to suppress the African American vote or better known as Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow voting laws required the freedmen to pass literacy tests that they were unable to pass because of no formal education because of their status of slaves. Many states created poll taxes, which many poor Americans, white and black, were unable to pay. Many precincts made their voting precincts white only so that blacks would have nowhere to cast their votes. The Jim Crow voter suppression tactics were so successful that only three percent of African Americans in the south were registered to vote in 1940. Years of abuse in the ring (punches to the chest, head and stomach) have taken their toll on him, and the evidence of brain damage is chillingly present in his constant shakes and movements a reminder of the risk involved when entering the ring. As shown in the film Snatch , a gang leader is led to placing extraordinary amounts of money on a fixed bout and ends up in trouble with his clients when one of the fighters had a different bet and caused him to lose. These chains of events can be seen as a justice for those who take part in illegal gambling, but nonetheless it should be stopped. Boxing leads us to believe that our problems can be solved with violence, instead of dealing with them properly. If boxing were banned, it would almost certainly go underground and cause even more crimes to deal with. On the other hand, there are some advantages to boxing, in that it generates a lot of income for the organisers, promoters and coaches, and even the boxers themselves get a pay check in excess of one million dollars (in the biggest events). Geoffrey began to read off lineage that most nobles in Camelot knew by heart, until he came to the one that Merlin both anticipated and feared. The warlock was trembling, as he awaited the signal from the dais. His hand gripped the dragon bone hilt of Carnwenhau, drawing deep on the strength within himself. He silently asked that his grandfather, who once wore the dagger, to be with him. ...His Majesty, High King of Briton, Aurelius Ambrosius in the Great Marriage Rite with a druid priestess begat a son, Balinor Emrys of the Dragon Lord line, Earl of Snowdonia... Merlin heard his mother s gasp resound across the near silent room. He grinned, wondering what she was going to think of the next part. This has been corroborated by His Royal Majesty, King Lot of Lothian and the High Druid Iseldir. Lord Balinor, joined to Hunith of Ealdor, in turn begat one son. Merlin took a deep breath and stepped partially out of the shadows, standing near the entrance to the Great Hall. The Great Marriage Rite to validify Balinor s heritage was a bit of a stretch. Although recognized as a joining among the druidic population and others who still revered the Old Religion, it was not something that would be upheld as a true Royal Line in the eyes of the Roman church, if his legitimacy was ever challenged...but it was acceptable enough for the role of regent, ... • 50. Astronomy Impact Astronomical impact of the Moon on Earth By: Peter Wehrfritz (500405367) CPCS 181 The moon has had a profound impact on the earth s evolution as well as life on Earth. Our moon is believed to have been created about 4.5 billion years ago, when a large planetoid crashed into the Earth, spraying space debris which was gradually captured by gravity 2. Eventually, this material solidified into a body which we know as our moon. 3. This process is unique in our solar system as the other planet s moons were formed by capturing free floating bodies with their gravity 3. Physical Characteristics of the Moon Earth s moon is the brightest object in our night sky. It has an elliptical orbit around the earth every 27.322 days and it also takes approximately ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The gravitational force of the moon is strong enough to exert a pulling force on the Earth, but the Earth is able to hold on to everything except the water 7. As the water is in constant motion the moon gravity is able to create a pull on the water, causing it to bulge resulting in high tide 7. As the Moon and the earth are moving with respect to each other, the force creating high tide also moves over different parts of the earth. Each day, there are two high tides and two low tides, with about 12 hours and 25 minutes between the two high tides 7. However, these periods do not happen at the same time each day because the moon takes about 50 minutes more than earth s 24 hour day to exactly align again with the same point on the Earth. Therefore, the timing of high tides is staggered throughout the month, with each tide occurring approximately 24 hours and 50 minutes later than the previous one 6. It is also observed that the water on the opposite side of Earth which faces away from the Moon also experiences high tide 6. The reason is that the stronger centrifugal force pulls in the opposite direction to negate the moon s gravitational pull on the earth to keep them apart and thus causes the ocean water on the opposite side of the Earth to bulge and experience high tide ... Later the mother walks between the spaces in those two line to the bride and as she passes each character, they starts facing the bride as if to give more attention to what s about to happen. The mother looks at the bride and then she spits at her and the light goes off and the act I starts. I think this is very interesting because this gives us the foreshadow of what s about to happen in the play. Her action which was spitting on the bride showed very strong hate and disgrace towards the bride which I think is very stronger than just slapping her. In this play, the style of the stage that was the black box stage. I think this style of the stage was very helpful as it didn t block the view of the actors as the thrust stage did which was used in the crucible. I was able to see the actors clearly without their back facing towards me. The role of a wife was played by Drew Beaubian. What I really liked about her character is that she is very innocent and unaware of her husband love for another woman who turns out be her cousin. She worries about her family. I was expecting there to be a lot of crying once the mother and wife finds out about the death the bridegroom and Leonard but to my surprise neither of them cried in the play which was pretty odd to me knowing the son was very dear to the mother. Ana Rivera played as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Essay about Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman Language in Amiri Baraka s The Dutchman The popular saying actions speak louder than words is upended in Amiri Baraka s play, The Dutchman, where words, or in this case language, speaks louder than the actions of the characters, Lula and Clay. Language governs the characters and their actions, and is therefore a prominent feature in shaping the identities of Lula and Clay. In the play, Baraka conveys the significance of Lula and Clay being enabled to change their identities by a simple change in the type of language they employ. Though it may seem that the characters have dominion over the language and can shape their own identities by a simple change in the language they utilize, through repetition of the concurring motifs of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She uses lies to make Clay feel that she knows him and has control over his life. Therefore the lies become a form of control that Lula has over Clay, and white people have over black people. What Lula fails to comprehend is that by lying she doesn t control the world and her identity in society, but the world starts to control her and her identity in the social structure. Clay, like Lula, is also caught in this trap of lies because of the fact that he is black. Clay argues that [people] don t know anything except what s there for [them] to see. An act. Lies. Device. Not the pure heart, the pumping black heart (34). He is living a lie; his whole identity as a black person as perceived by outsiders is a lie. Even though he chooses this fake faГ§ade of a white man instead of murdering white people, the language of lies once again shapes his identity as a fake white man. Lula also tells Clay that by telling her he loves her is the only kind of thing [he] will lie about. Especially if [he] think[s] it ll keep [her] alive (27). What Lula implies here is that if Clay doesn t lie about loving her, then because he doesn t employ the language of lies, he will act upon the truth and murder her. Though Clay denies this accusation, the fact that Lula believes that Clay would lie, shapes his identity as a liar. Both Lula and Clay try to form their identity apart from what society has imposed on them by lying. Both fail on this account, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. The Ideal Household By Xenophon The purpose of The Ideal Household as told by Xenophon, a student of Socrates, was to show the reader how an elite Athenian lady lived as well as to show what an ideal marriage looked like. Xenophon wanted to convey to the readers what he thought an ideal marriage looked like and also what he generally thought most marriages in Athens were. The overall message of this source is not explicit in nature, but does offer a subtle yet firm message on how women in Athens were expected to behave. Wives of elite men were often expected to fully run the household while dedicating their lives to their husbands and family. The work the women put into their family and households was a full time job that was usually never noticed or acknowledged outside of the household. Xenophon conveyed his message of what he thought an ideal marriageand household was by asking an Athenian gentleman questions about his marriage and life. The man offered insight into his and his wifes life and he spoke about how he lived a relaxed life while his wife attended to most if not all the household duties. Xenophon seemed worried about what this man actually did with his life and the man replied that he does not spend my days indoors, if for no other reason than because my wife can manage all our domestic affairs without my aid. . ( ) The man made it very clear that he has in a way trained his wife to run their household while he does whatever he pleases. Xenophon was very interested by this and wondered ...
